DREAMS COME TRUE! I am so thankful to @CoachFuente and @coach_ham for this opportunity. Thank you to @coachfostervt and @t_claeys and all my many great mentors and coaches that have helped me get to this position to achieve my dreams. I can't wait to get to work! Go Hokies!β Jack Tyler (@JackInTheBox58) January 13, 2021
Congratulations to Jack Tyler @JackInTheBox58 on his promotion. I couldn't be more excited for him or more proud of him. I've had the pleasure of watching him develop and evolve as a man, a player and as a coach. He's a special man and has a bright future in this business. #LPDβ Bud Foster (@coachfostervt) January 13, 2021

Former Players Reactions:
Speaking of former players. I noticed this tweet from Coach Tapp. Good to see this kind of outreach. Something so simple but can go a long way.
It's great to have Tapp, but it really shows how badly mismanaged our alumni outreach is that he has plead for them to come back.
Agreed. Look no further than Ox's tweet.
He's been doing great work as a support staffer the past 4 years or so. Now we'll see how well he recruits on the road*
Sounds like Claeys is happy to take a year off while he nails down another DC job.
*once COVID is over
I love his twitter handle
And won't he be capable of transferring loluva hate to the next gen?
That should be a 3-credit course (with a lab section) taught by James Gayle.
Need to hire Bradburn to run the Twitter account, if he doesn't get a shot in the league of course!

How fun would it be to have the VT Football twitter account controlled by team alums as a group?
So much shade thrown at hoos and Miami. Would also help them feel connected with the team, too.
Such a good idea. @Whit
Very happy about this. A lot of Hokies on the defensive side of the ball.
Always good to see Hokies doing well after graduating.
He's already been working with the team, keep the chemistry going. Hoping for the best out of this

Seeing them announce Tyler as the replacement so quickly after Claeys' stepped down makes me wonder if this was the plan all along. JHam may have wanted to promote Jack last year, but CJF may not have wanted a first-time coach on an already inexperienced staff. So they bring in Claeys for a year to show the young defensive coaches the ropes and essentially train his replacement, then let him walk to retire or try to find a DC job somewhere.
So Claeys was effectively a coach from the "Portal"?
Y'all think everything is an elaborate plan. Read Claeys statement, he wants to be a DC. He didn't like being a position coach. Not everything has to have some huge chess game behind it.
He obviously wasn't offered a DC position last year. He may not like being a linebacker coach but if he took it, it likely means it was the best offer on the table. It is definitely possible that he was pitched a training role. Especially considering how involved Jack was this year. It doesn't have to be true, but could definitely be true.
A lot of things could be true. I just see a ton of this chess game speculation like there's always some master plan that Fuente is working behind the scenes. I think things are always simpler than they seem with this staff.
It doesn't make much difference to me anyway in this instance. It wasn't a wizard's plan if true and nothing damning if not true. Jack Tyler has been groomed for this promotion since he was a player. It was time for him to be promoted and I am happier he is here than somewhere else. I hope he does an outstanding job.
I'm not sure why you think I'm suggesting Jack Tyler wasn't being groomed, or that it wasn't time for him to be promoted, or anything of that sort.
I wasn't thinking that. I was merely elaborating that whatever plan there was or wasn't doesn't change the current situation, and I am ok however it went down.
Yeah, but maybe somewhere in between.
I would guess Claeys was Ham insurance but after a year, they saw that Ham was fine. With budget cuts, they went to Claeys with a huge paycut and ge chose retirement. We are going to save like $300k going from Claeys to Tyler. That will find the support positions they want to add + the only raise anyone will get (Vice).
Tyler is good and deserves a shot. Claeys is a budgetary extravagance we can no longer afford. We don't need that insurance.
Yeah VT is really more of a checkers school
Let's be real though, the linebacker play regressed if anything this season. Not sure how that fits in to that narrative.
I refuse to speculate, so I'll just wonder instead.
