Anyone around VA have any recommendations for places that do reel repairs and maintenance? Tired of trying to fix my baitcasters and one spinning reel that's been messed up. I have one good spot but it's a bit away and with the mail all messed up I'm a bit hesitant to mail them

Just booked a trip to Alabama for May with my dad and brother-in-law. Been probably 17-18yrs since I've been down to Guntersville.

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

Need a little advice/guidance

I'll be in Topsail for the entire month of June (May 29-June26) staying across the street from the beach in a small little community on the sound side with access to a dock...

I'd love to do some fishing while I'm there. I'll likely bring a 9wt flyrod (some advice on flies would be awesome) and another spinning reel.

What should I expect to be fishing for and do you fellas have advice on tackle, bait, etc.

Thanks in advance!

Redfish, Specks, Flounder.

For spin gear, Johnson Silver Minnow in 1/2 ounce, gold color. Cast and burn for reds. Popping cork with DOA shrimp, unweighted for Specks. Chartreuse jighead with 4 inch white soft plastic for Flounder.

For flies, well, Clousers are standard saltwater fare. Are you looking to buy flies? I tie custom flies for everything under the sun and have several different patterns for fishing NC. I could name them here but you're not going to find them in any fly shops or Orvoid stores.

I was planning to purchase flies... I would certainly rather spend the money with a fellow Hokie. Let me know the best way to make that happne!

Nice pickerel! I am trying to figure out what to do to pass the time before the hickory shad show up in the James.

You're in Mville, come on over. I sold my boat but you can bank fish. My personal best LMB was caught in February from my bank with a suspending jerk bait just like the one in the pic below. Different color though.

"Hey Bud, you wont have to hold the opponent to 17 points anymore."

Went out of Goodland today. The good news is that I saw a ton of redfish, snook, mullet and tarpon. The bad news is that I only saw them because they were floating. The red tide killed them all. I saw 3 living fish all day today, and 2 were mullet (the other was a baby goliath. Surprised he was still alive honestly)

We have to get serious about this down here. What I saw today rocked me hard. We cannot let this be this extreme every year.

Reading this concerns me it was sounding in talking to those in the area the last few years had helped heal it but to hear it's back is sad. Going to be down on captiva in a few months and was hoping to run a guide for a day but I may check in to see how it is.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

I was deciding between estero bay (my usual spots) and goodland, and decided on the latter because of the red tide rumors I heard about estero. It was as bad if not worse in goodland than what I had heard about points north. I should have gone down to chokoloskee, but have zero actionable knowledge of that area and would have spent all day paddling around (because my motor is F-d right now)

"Look at this... This is just spectacular.... These people are losing their minds"

not what I wanted to read...none of it.

It's bad Dave. One of those things that just hurts you right down to the soul, even if you aren't a fisherman or involved in the industry or those related to it.

On the bright side, the motor was just a connection issue at the switch in the control head, so that's fixed.

Warning- Filter lost.

"Look at this... This is just spectacular.... These people are losing their minds"

well, very happy you fixed the motor...it's not an expensive one but it should have held up better than that.

red tide occurs naturally from time to time. but our situation is ridiculous...and the frequency and extent of what we are seeing is substantially avoidable.

frankly, there is no good excuse; a few conspicuous people need to be feeling some pretty intense heat.

well, very happy you fixed the motor...it's not an expensive one but it should have held up better than that.

It wasn't the stock connection. I threw a PWM between it and the battery, so rewired it a bit inside. It was one of my connections that was faulty. Just had to tighten her back down and put some loctite on the screw. Should be good now. Sucks to find that out on the water though!

I agree that some people need to be getting heat. I'm going to start getting more involved in the issue somehow.

The water situation in Florida is just royally fucked. What a disaster. I'm not sure it will ever return to what it once was. Too much $$$, people and politics. Sorry it's happening in your back yard.

Unfortunately, I could not agree with this more. If they don't do something to at least start to control it, I fear the worst in a relatively short amount of time.

Maybe I'm only noticing more lately since I spend more time in saltwater than I used to, but it seems to be getting worse every year. If what I experienced yesterday is any indication of what's to come, that moratorium on snook/trout/redfish will no doubt be extended in time and range this coming year.

Because of the times, I was forced by the Board to send one of my staff for a Covid test today because he was coughing so bad he could barely breathe.

My wife and I fished an eastern Shenandoah stream on Saturday. Naturally, she picked up a few more brookies than I did and even caught a couple on a caddis dry which was awesome. She's got the hang of fly fishing now and enjoys it as much or more than I do. I think I'm finally getting the hang of tight-line nymphing which is good considering how many hours I've devoted to it with limited success. Nothing beats a brookie with pink spots.

Pretty work! Was the stream running high from the rain this weekend?

Thanks! It was high so we headed upstream until it looked more fishable. Flows were normal where we fished.

Well done. I need to do a Brookie trip. Chicks are much better anglers than guys so don't feel bad if she outfishes you

There were a lot of bugs flying around for a January day and the fish really turned on late in the afternoon.
I'm completely used to it now. She's way more patient than I am and will cover nearly every inch of a pool before moving on and it pays off. I'm learning a thing or two.

Absolutely beautiful....................!

I tied four more cobia leaders and six more double dropper loops. Not much went right in 2020, but I used the double dropper loop instead of sabikis during drum season to catch my bait, and despite size 4 hooks, I caught just as many spot. And, it was killer on sea mullet. I will pop out the sabiki for threadfins, but if those sea mullet are around, I have no qualms looping on some size 4 or 2 hooks and a pyramid to do some work while we wait for cobia and drum to bite.

That blue over silver over orange Rapala style jerkbait is an absolute killer color combination on the White and Norfork Rivers in Arkansas. Crushes big brown trout. A guide told me to keep it a secret, but now you all know if you ever get to fish the White, which I highly recommend for fly or light spin. Best brown trout fishing in the U.S. for huge browns and lots of them. It caught my eye as I don't see that color combination very often.

clicked on this thread to get rid of the ad, and actually read through it. i have never gone fishing, and you guys are speaking a foreign language to me :-) but, my kids (3 & 5) have shown some interest, so i might have to learn how to fish sometime soon.

Let us know what water you are going to fish and what species you are thinking about targeting and I am sure between all of us you will get lots of help. With little kids, the key is to keep their attention span as best as possible, which can be very tough! Stocked trout ponds or well loaded bluegill filled ponds in parks are the best bet for initial success. Don't expect to fish much for yourself- lots of untangling re-tying and baiting hooks
, but you will cherish those moments.

"Hey Bud, you wont have to hold the opponent to 17 points anymore."

greenville, sc. my in-laws have a place on lake hartwell, not far from clemson. so i spend a lot of time down there in the summer.

I hadn't fished since the end of November and changed that today by heading south after an insane report of huge schools of drum and trout down in NC. One of my local friends has been out spreading gill nets (ugh) but they have found the fish. He told me to get down with the boat and bring fly rods because there are some massive schools of reds up to 9 pounds with 5-7 pound trout mixed in.

I woke up at 4 am and made the haul down. Met up with my buddy and hit the flat, fly rods ready, with a slight breeze and clear skies. Over the next 5 hours I saw one pack of 10 reds and one solitary fish. Two shots at them and refusals. There were a few small trout here and there. What there were tons of, and by tons I mean six, were commercial fishermen in their boats actively doing donuts across the entire couple square mile flat, rounding up schools of drum and trout and then netting them. It was pretty frustrating to watch. I did learn a lot from my buddy tell me about how its done. The good news is they can only keep 7 reds per day, per permit. They can keep 75 trout though. They toss the rest of the reds back, which is great. But they sure don't take much care to remove them very gingerly from the nets. I did not see any dead ones. We talked for a bit with one of the commercial guys and he was very nice and pointed me in the direction of where the bigger schools of drum have been hanging out. I'd like to go back down and look for them, but there is no way those fish feel comfortable there. It's gotta be like living in the middle of route 81 with incessant traffic. I'm not sure its worth for shell shocked fish.

After watching the boat antics for a few hours, I wanted to try super-duper secret creek, but the run was far too long for the one day trip. 9 plus hours of driving round trip for 6 hours of scouting and a skunking. You win some, you lose some. It was nice to be outside. Oh and not without boat issues! The trim seals, despite being brand new, are already leaking and basically worthless, and the trim tabs wouldn't work either. At least its winter and I've got a bit of time to fix them.

Back to tying earrings the rest of the week and weekend.

Anyone out there have experience with powder coat. My first attempts came out "all globbed up". I'm doing spinner blades. Am I getting them too hot? Not knocking off the excess hard enough? I should be simple but that is the way it goes for me lately!

"Hey Bud, you wont have to hold the opponent to 17 points anymore."

I work for a company that does all sides of fab work so I've done powder coating on all kinds of metal parts. My guess is it's with the temps. How hot are you getting the blades? You need a thorough coat and we use a walk in oven to cook the powder on and bake the coat on for a smooth finish. I can't remember the temperature exactly I'll look it up tomorrow though.

Are you planning on shad fishing from the bank or from a boat?

Bank

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

I park under the 95 bridge and walk down between that and the 14th st bridge and catch em no problem from the bank.

Yep, lots of shad fishermen on the river in that area down river of the I95 bridge. You can even catch them on a fly for some real fun.

A really good bank spot is below the Southern States building. There is a culvert flowing out that holds fish just below it. I fished there years ago, but no clue what the access is like now, though I see people fishing off of the bank there.

This snooty fly fisherman cringes at the thought of fishing the James below 95. I'm convinced the water eats the paint off of my boat. If you want to go shad fishing in a much prettier place, with bigger fish and no garbage, I'll take you. I'll need to do some scouting anyways for the guide trips.

Cutting a condom into a very thin strip and then wrapping it on hook makes one hell of an awesome caddis imitation for trout.

I also saw a pike fly tied with a condom as the tail. He tied it in tip first at the bend of the hook with the open end at the rear. Said it had a pretty cool action in the water. Then again, pike will eat anything. There's a pic of a guy floating around on the internet who catches pike on lures he makes out of dildos. I can't find it. I ended up having a good conversation with the guy about the red tide and fly fishing in general as he is an avid fly rodder as well, but was a pain to watch head wakes go by and not be able to throw at them.... Oh well. Probably better to be on his good side anyways.

Got a new Penn combo today as a replacement for a FinNor that lost multiple eyes. Got the sweet hookup from my business account rep at Ace Hardware who returned the FinNor for full price and only charged me tax on the new setup, including new line. So I guess I'll try it out in the morning

"Hey Bud, you wont have to hold the opponent to 17 points anymore."

Evening team, your resident Texas fisherman here. Wanted to share a quick report of some trout fishing I got into with my two youngest daughters from this past week.

Each winter the Texas Parks and Wildlife stocks rainbow trout all throughout the state as part of a "put and pull" program designed to encourage fishing in the colder months. The fish are purchased from state fisheries in Missouri, arrive around Thanksgiving, and last through early April. Each trout will range anywhere from 10-16". I have tried multiple bodies of water in deep East Texas with multiple methods, ranging from worms to artificial dough bait, and varying my depths to try and hit all areas of the water column. In all, my most affective method is using a chartreuse rooster tail, size 1, cruising on a medium retrieve in approximately 2' of water from the surface.

We arrived at this particular location and hit pay-dirt. Within 20 minutes we had limited out. It was a great feeling; I have had many days throughout my life where the fishing was tough sledding. I learned a long time ago when the conditions are right, and the fish are biting, just keep going.

I particularly enjoyed showing the kiddos the entire process from pond to plate. My youngest helped catch, my sons helped me clean, and then my oldest assisted in the cooking and serving. Multiple lessons in economics, animal harvesting and stewardship.

For those with children, I cannot express enough how enjoyable--and valuable these lessons are. Look around your area to see what programs and offerings your state fisheries can offer, there are bound to be similar opportunities in a city near you.

Cheers--

A quick informal poll- what is your favorite lever drag reel in the 15-20 size (ballpark 250-350 yards of 30 mono)?

Some examples include the Shimano Speedmaster II 16 and TLD 15, the Penn Fathom LD 25, the Avett MXL, and (if you have cash falling from the sky) the Seigler LG or Accurate Boss 500.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

TLD 15. I had two of these when I lived in FL and went offshore in my 21 ft SeaRay CC. Used them as a flatline rod or surface trolling rod with mono. Caught many kings, mahi, and, unfortunately, sharks with them. They worked well, drag setting was smooth and maintenance was straightforward. Never had one fail.

Pain is Temporary, Chicks Dig Scars
Glory is Forever, Let's Go Hokies!!

Thanks. I have been happy with the TLD (I have a 20 and a 15), especially the smoothness of the drag. I think my interest in exploring the market is around my desire to use lighter gear for boat fishing than I would use on a pier, and there are lighter models of LDs with more drag power for fish that can take 150-200 yards on a pier, but are VERY unlikely to make that kind of run on a boat. I may end up getting another 15 (it is the most price friendly option), but I want to get feedback before investing.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

Your welcome. I also had a couple TLD 25s which I used for trolling for larger species. Seems they might be a bit large for what your thinking. I had similar good experiences with them as well.
BTW, when offshore, as a best practice, I never used a lever drag for bottom fishing, used them trolling or flat lines only.

Went down to NC this weekend and fished when it wasn't blowing a gale. Managed 6 trout over 20" over the two days. Biggest was 22.5". Pulled off a bigger trout early in my first trip. Probably was a citation. It felt heavy and was head shaking up top but I horsed it a bit. Caught some rat reds as well. Mainly used a MR27. Listened to FlyGuy podcast on the way back which I really enjoyed and made me want to look for some sightcasting reds down there.

Thanks! Hope my voice doesn't drive you crazy like it does to me. Not sure where you have been fishing but I was given a local report, that there are stripers up to 10 pounds, 30 inch reds and 5 pound trout on some docks, being caught somewhere down there in the middle of the day. I confirmed it was middle of the day and not my docklight spots and was given the affirmative. My guess is it's somewhere in the Neuse. All fish being caught on Mirrolures. Throwing a plug under a dock and getting one of those three options sounds absolutely fantastic! If the wind report holds for the weekend I'll go down with the flats boat and my new truck to explore. Solid reports of redfish schools, which is what I'm really after.

Could someone explain to me how the hell Mirrolures defines the size of their plugs? I just spent several minutes on their website and I cannot figure it out for the life of me. I see 17MR 808, 18MR 292, 27 MR 78 and all sorts of numbers around MR. It's more confusing than listening to my buddy talk about his machine gun collection with just numbers and letters. I've got a box full of the old school Mirrolures where the line gets tied to the head, along with some of the newer Mirrodines and Mirrodine Heavys. I figure I'll tie one on and chuck it at some docks, but only if the wind kicks up too much and I can't get an eat on fly of course.

You're welcome, it didn't drive me crazy haha. You aren't a smooth baseball announcer voice but nothing bad. If it is stripers I'd assume the neuse as well. The first number describes the size/model number the number behind describes the color pattern. It is confusing because of how people refer to them versus how the packaging is. Remember 17 and 27 sinks at 0.5 ft/sec, 18 sinks at 1 ft/sec. When you twitch the bait it goes up a foot. I've looked/bought a ton of mirrolures this year so I'm happy to talk more about it.

Thank you for the run down. That makes a lot more sense.

If I was a baseball announcer, no doubt it would be Brockmire...

I dont try and order stuff online from mirrorlure as their stuff seems to confuse me the same way so I just buy whatever I can find in person so I actually put the lure in hand before buying.

You're welcome. It's been a learning curve for me this year figuring them out but they definitely tend to get a bigger class of fish versus soft plastic.

Love that show, it was one of my watches early in quarantine.

808 is definitely a staple for a reason. I had some pretty clear water although it was tanin. I had 2-3 feet of visibility. I was using a custom color with a purple back and silver side and belly.

the 808BG has the gold/hologram flash on the side instead of silver

Yep, i have one. I haven't caught a big one on 808BG yet but I got it cause you always hear about it.

On another note, I saw this CA Richardson bucktail video that made me think of you https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVetCenwihA

great video! I think bucktails are WAY underutilized in my part of the world.

Remember, here we've been transitioning from 99.99% live bait. Go back to the podcast you linked re: inshore fishing here in NEFL and he doesn't mention bucktails/jigs at all. There is very little here in the way of stripers, blues, and shad, species where jigs have some history. There NO fly fishing history here to speak of so no one tying lures. There is ONE person who makes jigs here commercially...ONE. And he just does a few.

I only think of bucktails with flounder fishing and usually tipped with gulp I haven't heard of any big trout guys using them not to say they wouldn't work. They are definitely intriguing and effective.

Ended up pairing a new TLD 15 with a TFO Larry Dahlberg 7'6 Big Fish rated 1-6oz. I figure that gives me a live baiting rod, and I could always get a Lexa or Tranx if I wanted to use it as a sight caster.

Looking for recommendations. Where can I find unfinished weedless jigs. I have been to several sites without much luck. LPOL has some but they sell them in random styles / sizes like a grab bag.

Yep, really good interview. Confirms a lot of what I learned this year.

I may be VRBOing a house on the Rapp or North River in April (first week) on the water. Any dock fishing opportunities that early? (perch, rockfish, pups?)

Todays catch. Fat as a pig and 17". They will spawn before the crappie and bass. I don't understand why they bulk up. All they do is swim around together and "shoot" stuff all over the place!

On a warmer day like today I love throwing small spinners for them they love that stuff.
