Hokie goes #1 in MLS Super Draft 2021

MLS Superdraft started at 2pm today. First over all pick went to expansion team Austin F.C. and they took Daniel Pereira from our Hokies with that pick! Good stuff.

Didn't even know this was happening and just checked. Top 4 picks all from the ACC.

Wonder if the Red Bulls will get anybody that can help. They've traded or released so many players in the last 1-2 years I barely know anybody on the team other than Long and Davis.

Top 5 picks are from the ACC. The talent level is insane in the ACC every year.

Well, guess I better buy ATX FC season tickets after all...

Is the stadium they are going to use the one they they have been building at COTA or is that a separate venue?

The last time I was there was Oct 2019 for the USGP, and what they were building seemed to be not that big.

The one by COTA was used for the USL side, and they will be the farm team moving forward, still playing at COTA.

Austin FC will be playing at McKalla Place in this beauty:

Always been a huge Austin FC fan.... since five minutes ago.

I've seen all their games, in person, even.

Also worth noting that standout keeper Ben Lundgaard plays for Atlanta United. He is currently listed on the roster for Atlanta United 2 but spends time on the first time as backup for games outside of MLS.

Kristo Strickler went to the Houston Dynamo in Round 2

#VT2TX Am I doing that right?

This makes four out of the last five years that a Hokie has been taken in the MLS Superdraft.

2017 - Juan Pablo Saavedra D Toronto (Design Project Manager in DC)
2018 - Ben Lundgaard GK Columbus (now Atlanta)
2020 - James Kasak D Sporting KC (free agent)
2021 - Daniel Pereira MF Austin
2021 - Kristo Strickler F Houston

Pereira is the third 1st rounder for Tech with Patrick Nyarko and Ben Lundgaard being the other two.

I saw Nyarko play once, against Clemson in the NCAA tournament (very exciting W for the good guys). Man that guy could play. Never knew what happened to him after he was drafted

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Braxton Burmeister, Ryan Willis, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

Played 8 years in the MLS, mostly with Chicago but one season with DC United. His career was cut short by concussions. He suffered at least 8 documented concussions while in the MLS.

He is now a volunteer coach with VCU soccer.

Now we have another small, random connection with Austin FC...

They announced today that their home will be named "Q2 Stadium", after partnering with a local banking tech company. Who was in charge of Q2's decision to buy the naming rights?

Former Hokie and NFL QB Will Furrer ('92), Q2's Chief Strategy Officer.
