it'll be interesting to see who their coach will be in 2025 too tbh

Yeah, I was going to say I wonder which sideline Beamer will be on for the game.

I'll bet on both (at different times).

Hell yeah!

I'll never be able to not laugh at this gif. The reactions make it much better.

Another white bronco? The first one didn't go too far.

Will Cory Holt be our honorary captain for that game?

Oddly enough there's probably a better than average chance that Shane is our coach for that game.

I think as long as Whit is still in Blacksburg Shane won't be

It's always darkest before the dawn ~ Thomas Fuller

...does Whit have specific beef with Shane?

Hokies United l Ut Prosim

Not that I'm aware of but by failing to fire Fuente Whit has clearly demonstrated that VT is not serious enough about Football for VT to be successful at football. Shane would know that and if I were Shane I wouldn't want to be in a place that isn't committed to being successful on the gridiron. VT clearly is not and that is why, among other reasons, I'm sure, VT was not Shane's dream job.

It's always darkest before the dawn ~ Thomas Fuller

Alternative theory - Whit wasn't 100% sure he could hire his #1 target, and you don't fire someone unless you are positive you can get a better replacement.

that's speculative. All we know is that Fuente is not performing well enough, VT isn't recruiting well enough, and fan apathy is on the horizon. I don't envy Whit for the position he is in. But the optics of keeping a lame-duck coach who clearly isn't doing his job adequately are pretty terrible. If Whit can't get a better coach now I don't see how he can get a better coach in the future. There were (are) plenty of good candidates out there. If Whit wasn't able to land any of them that is a pretty clear issue that isn't going to fix itself.

It's always darkest before the dawn ~ Thomas Fuller

Your suggestion that Whit Babcock doesn't take VT football seriously is *far* more speculative.

Hokies United l Ut Prosim

yes, it is. But with how quickly he's driving our football program into the ground I'm pretty confident that he's not taking it seriously enough

It's always darkest before the dawn ~ Thomas Fuller

For a guy who doesn't take football seriously, he just raised $25MM.

We put the K in Kwality

Is that all for football?

Recruit Prosim

It was the result of the recruiting and resource needs Fuente brought up when he "interviewed" with Baylor. I don't know it's all earmarked for football, but safe to say 80-90% would be.

We put the K in Kwality

Why did you put interviewed in quotations

Recruit Prosim

Because Fuente denies interviewing for the job. Says he just had a conversation. They came here, etc.

We put the K in Kwality

Who says he can't get a better coach? But if you have your sights on one or two and they aren't 100% a guarantee to sign with you, you don't fire your current coach (who still has a winning record at VT).

Are things great? Not at all. Do you make irrational decisions in the middle of a financial crisis like no other and act like a fan if you're Whit. NOPE.

firing Fuente who has amassed 5 years of data proving that this program is going to continue in the wrong direction under his leadership is not irrational. Keeping a coach who has lost consistently to less talented teams, has failed consistently on the recruiting trail, and consistently blames execution errors or misfortune for his plethora of losses is not only irrational, it is insane. We are ramming our heads into a wall expecting something different to happen by keeping Fuente. He has proven that he cannot win in the ACC. Expecting anything different at this point is literally insane.

It's always darkest before the dawn ~ Thomas Fuller

Is Shane an "offensive minded HC"... Because Whit does not even entertain 50% of the potential coaching pool.

You're using present tense. Who's to say he wouldn't consider one next time? I think he saw that the fanbase was tired of an ineffective offense back in 2015 and went in that direction. Also, Fu was the guy everyone wanted at the time, so this revisionist history so many VT fans are using is annoying.

Fuente was 26-23 in 4 years at Memphis, before being hired by VT. Was he really "the guy everyone wanted at the time," or is that maybe revisionist history?

You sure he wasn't just one of the top 2-3 candidates we had a realistic chance with? Because those aren't the same thing at all.

The doll's trying to kill me and the toaster's been laughing at me.

I'm not sure he was the guy everyone wanted, as people wanted Chad Morris, or whomever. But everyone was happy with the hire, he turned memphis around and had a big win over Ole Miss/Hugh Freeze.

There wasn't a coach in 2015 that we didn't have a realistic chance with that was looking. (i.e. no chance with Saban)

It's amazing how much money that Ole Miss win has made Fuente.

Was this the game Whit was talking about when he said "we have a neutral site game you'll be excited for" in the same press conference where he was trying to calm the fanbase down (many of whom wanted Shane) after not firing Fuente? Oof

We announce a good out of conference game that will have great national exposure and this is the response we come up with? Oof

Gobble Till You Wobble

We'd be excited because it's a beatable SEC opponent and Fuente will either not be the coach by then or prove us all wrong /s

Yes,that's the Hokie Bird riding a camel. Why'd you ask?

beatable for now, once that Beamer magic happens though ....

I was thinking the game Whit was referring to was going to be next year to replace PSU but I don't know.

Must go plaid

This is definitely a game I will be looking forward to and planning to attend if possible.

I've been desperately hoping for a UGA/SCar home and home for us for years, but this will do.

To the Hokie fans planning to attend this game, the BENZ IS AWESOME. It has extremely cheap concessions, the cheapest at any venue of this stature I've gone to, great options for food and even an above average beer selection featuring multiple places to get IPA's instead of just expensive Bud Light-esque tallboys like many pro sports set ups.

edit: Also if you happen to drive a Benz, there is a specific free parking lot right beside the stadium for Benz drivers. I think for most big time events you have to reserve a spot, but my friends and I managed to get in the lot with his mom's Benz without reserving anything before a concert once.

Thanks for the insight. I haven't been to a game in ATL since we beat UGA 21-3 in 2006 (why they stopped the game at halftime has always been a mystery to me).

Chick Fil A should be open too!

Glad that we get a quality opponent. Keep up the great work.

It will be interesting to see how VT stacks up against USCe with one less rebuilding year (for VT) by that time.

But what number rebuilding year will it be?

To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
@BuryHokie #ThanksFrank

Let's see, 2016-19 were years -3, -2, -1, and 0 for Fu. This year was just year 1, and by 2025 Fu will have set the program back another five years, so I'm thinking we are in year -4 by then using Whit math. Good seasons move the clock forward I think, bad ones move it back a year since we have to rebuild the culture before it's his team again.

The effort people go through to misinterpret what Whit clearly meant when he said year 1 is astounding.

It's Time to go to Work

What did he mean? Year 1 of what? I'm legitimately puzzled by it.

This was the first year that it was all Fuente's players. You can find the full transcript online pretty easily. Here is the pertinent quote.

Furthermore – this is now away from those opinions and these are mine – for Justin in some ways this was year one in some respects. Please let me explain that. We are not going to look at it like year one. We know it was year five. What I mean is this, that this is year one of being totally Justin's program, all of his players. I believe the transition from Coach Beamer and Bud Foster was harder than anticipated, not because of Bud or Coach Beamer. Awesome, Justin and I couldn't be more complimentary. Those are two legends to follow. There is always the saying for the reason that it is hard to be the guy who follows the guy.

It's Time to go to Work

So who recruited the players from 2017-2019? Were they not Fuente's players? There were literally only a handful of players from the 2016 class on the roster even in 2019. And things have gotten worse the more the roster shifted to all "Fuente's players."

If you continue to try to find something to be upset about I'm confident you'll continue to succeed.

It's Time to go to Work

I think a good question is with so many good reasons to, what will it take for you to get upset?

Maybe your expectations are more easily met than mine, and that's fine. But I think Hokie football is better than this. Fu & co. could still win me back. But it would take more than it would at this time a year ago, and it would take things I haven't seen yet or since 2016/17, like a QB actually developing, firing Cornelson which hahahahaha, the offensive staff cracking open the playbook and being aggressive later than the 7:30 mark of the 2nd quarter (exaggeration for effect but you get what I'm saying here, they rarely play to win for 60 minutes), marked improvements in recruiting (JUCOs and the portal aren't enough ATM, sorry) and not taking the fans for granted (acting like Nick Saban with NFL-Chip-Kelly results does him no favors). No one including me will even care about that last one if he starts winning consistently. People are getting frustrated because the outlook on most of these ain't great.

The Year One thing is silly. He's had enough of his recruits here for long enough, and the leftover Beamer guys were around long enough that it shouldn't matter who recruited them.

I am willing to give the defensive staff a little more patience since they haven't been in place as long, we're extremely talent-deficient on that side of the ball, and I think we've got some good coaches and recruiters over there who may start making up the difference soon. Jury's still out on JHam, but he may grow into a good DC eventually. But my overall point is, don't get exasperated with people who are upset. There's plenty of good reason to be.

These are Whit's words. And, you and Whit are saying the same thing. The difference is he was trying to put a positive spin on it (did a bad job) and others just want to wallow in misery. Constantly making smart ass passive aggressive comments as if Whit is literally judging Fuente as a year one coach is noise. Everybody is upset. I personally recognize the shitty decision whit was facing and can understand why we are where we are. I don't have to like it to believe we are making the best chicken salad we can with a shit ton of chicken shit.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

I disagree that any of this is noise. Now just shitposting and constantly saying "We're Rollin'" without any other substance is definitely noise. But what you're saying is essentially anyone who is upset should either shut up or not post.

And I don't know where this "Whit was forced into making a bad decision" crap is coming from. Not going to directly share behind paywall info, but from all the sources that know, this was 100% Whit's decision. The money was there, the candidate(s) were there, the admin and BOV support was there, and Whit sided with Fuente. He made this mess and will have to deal with the backlash. I don't see why you're shocked people are pissed about our AD being this out of touch and keeping a coach who would have likely been fired after 2019 at many other programs.

We are all pissed. I said as much. Mocking the year one statement is just as much noise as mocking the we rolling statement. No, I do not think Whit was forced into keeping Fuente. I do believe he tested the waters and analyzed the possibility of starting a fresh staff in a recruiting dead period and decided there was less risk involved in keeping Fuente another year.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

Agree to disagree on the program, but don't go throwing the N word around. My comment may not have been super original but there really isn't much else to talk about re VTFB right now.

I'm just gonna take the "constantly" part as a general statement and not about me specifically.

Definitely a generalization about the "constantly". My specific reply to you was more about the assumption that the poster above, or others that have heard enough negativity, aren't upset. We are.

If y'all think Shane Beamer is our coach in 2025...I want the good stuff too, share it.

That being said I do think this would be fun. Remember back in the day when it seemed like we did these kickoff games every couple years?

ESPN. The coverage is excellent, you'd be surprised at how much you can pick up.

The game is a step in the right direction, but I would prefer a home/home (and not wait until the year 2034... seriously?). Although, this is a much more guaranteed way to lock-in an opponent instead of letting them slide the game and slither away *couch*wisconsin*penn st*cough*

I get the reason for the game not being played this year, but the home/home was cancelled outright vs. being rescheduled.

But we canceled it. We didn't get our side of the home and home so we weren't going to give them their side unless they could fit us back in, but couldn't make it happen soon enough to make sense.

I would like to see the two sides try again though. It is an exciting matchup.

If college football wants to survive, it needs to figure out a way to make out of conference crossovers more frequent and dump the FCS opponents completely.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

Yes, play within your division, I personally dont want to buy season tickets to see Richmond play at tech. I rather see fewer wins with quality opponents. This is the way to draw recruits, not playing little sisters. Cruits want to play the big games.

On the flip side, when your world isn't falling apart, playing the Richmond, JMU, and URI's of the world is supposed to let you clear the benches and get all of the players real playing time as opposed to sitting on the bench their entire career as third string.

It still isn't good for viewership. Right now college football is a regional sport. But it wouldn't have to be. Popularity would soar if we had better scheduling. Right now the FCS opponents are paid so teams can have an extra hime game. To me, it isn't worth it.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

I understand your theory, but what does third string do at other schools? Either ride the pine, get better in practice and show out, or transfer to the level they need to be realistically playing at by the third year. Practice is where you show your goods, ball out and get noticed. Playing fcs teams is a waste of time, especially for fans

I believe this may happen, as the SEC is not known for being a chicken shit conference who backs out of any potentially competitive game. Family in the ATL, son currently at USCe, so I am looking forward to going to it.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

SEC is not known for being a chicken shit conference who backs out of any potentially competitive game

That's because they don't schedule them in the first place. Many of them haven't played a game outside of the South in decades. Florida hasn't even played a non-conference games outside the state in god knows how long.

Non-factor for me. Playing football in inclement weather is not a show of superiority, and the main reason for this is most P5 OOC games are played earlier in the year anyway. Additionally, most of the neutral site games are played in the parts of the country that care the most about the sport, makes sense to me. Also, on that point, neutral site games are played for $$$, which we all agree is important in this sport, and not because they are "afraid" to go north of a certain state to play a football game in September.

Finally, they play more P5 OOC games than any conference other than the ACC
