Lock him up! What a hire so far.

Waiting for a contract extension until after year 2? I'm glad Whit has learned a few lessons. /s

All jokes aside, this is a great move and I love the commitment to basketball!

It wasn't immediately after year one, so definitely some improvement coming from the AD.

I see your s/, but I think some will have that concern. I replied on the tweet to someone with a similar concern, I think the biggest difference is that Fuente had success early with Beamer's players, got the extension, then started backsliding as Beamer's guys aged out of the program.

Young essentially had to rebuild this team the day he stepped on campus

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

And is showing signs of being able to reload the team that he built.

I agree that some will be worried, but to me this is night and day from Fuente's first 2 years. I'm all in for pre-game popcorn for years to come!

I really don't think this is night and day as Fuente had a great first year and was like 30 yards from taking Clemson to OT for the ACC championship. His second season should be viewed as a huge success to start frosh QB with losing your top two receivers. It really started to fall apart when Nijman got injured and Jackson got injured in the same game.

With all that said, Young is much better dealing with fans and media, and he made one huge coaching hire. He also wasn't making the money Fuente has made from the start so he needs a raise.

I also think it's unfair to both Fuente and Young to compare coaches who are coaching two completely different games. They have completely different sets of challenges to face and it's really a big stretch to try drawing parallels. I'm happy for Young. I hope he keeps it up. I'd love to see Fuente figure it all out and win 10+ games in 2021.

Onward and upward

Oh definitely. The only comparison I was trying to make is that both coaches over achieved in their first two years. They both came in to replace two of the beat coaches VT has had at either sport. And in the short term, they both succeeded. Their challenges in year 3+ diverge a lot as the sports are wildly different animals. But they bandaged up the programs and won a bunch of games.

Night and day is probably a bit of an exaggeration, but the amount of excitement, momentum, etc around Young after year 2 is very different than it was around Fuente after year 2 (IMO, maybe not a universal opinion). The big difference with this extension is that Whit waited until after year 2 to let the dust settle and make sure the extension had been earned. The programs are very different, but Fuente actually had the easier path. He had Beamer's guys, but couldn't get his own to measure up. Contrast that with Young who took over a program with few scholarship players and has had 2 fantastic seasons. It's hard to compare apples to oranges, but I strongly believe MY is the clear winner so far.

Cmon now, Mike Young's Year 1 isn't until 2023

How is it that there is not a single decent GIF of this man eating popcorn??

I told him I’d crawl on my hands and knees to be the DL coach at Virginia Tech. Now, all of a sudden, I’m sitting in this chair and I told him I’d still crawl on my hands and knees to work here. I just want to be here.

VT Football: It'll get after ya!

Proud Hokie since 2004.

Been away for like the last day.
This is the first news I've come back to.

I am so happy.

I was going to give a leg for the main article but I didn't want to mess with perfection.
This extension is well deserved! CMY is the perfect coach for VT and I hope his, and the team's, success continues for a lot longer than 6 years!

I don't know what a Hokie is, but God is one of them!

Are there any details on the extension? Hopefully Whit learned from the Fuente experience and didn't pile-on a monumental buy-out without sound justification. Dont get me wrong - I don't think we'll need it. I just dont like painting ourselves in a corner for no real reason.

not that I could find, however it's technically a 3 year extension because his original contract still has the years on it. He was scheduled to make 2.25, 2.5 and 2.75 mil the next 3 years. It is unclear if those numbers change or if he just gets 3 more years with similar escalation in pay.

He also has a number of bonuses, most of which he hit this year. Those probably still stay because that's what you want from the program.

Edit: unclear if those 2+ mil numbers include potential bonuses or if that's base compensation and bonuses are on top of that.
