Brad poked me about starting a new May thread since we're already halfway through.

Remember, we like twitter embeds, but links to 247 are preferred over embeds.

Poked? What year is this and how do I still poke someone on facebook these days?

more accurate to say that he brought it to my attention in the group chat

Correct!

Did everyone else in the group get a message like

GGC liked "hey fam u gonna start a May crootin post??"

I'm going to be honest, I just now realized we didn't have a May thread. I feel like it went from like April 29th to May 12th in half a day. My apologies to all.

It's already June! what planet are you on?

Don't worry, my office calendar still says it's March 2020 so we got a minute.

i'll chime in and say that mods don't have to make the crootin' threads, it's just convenient when we do it because we can lock the other one and easily copy the template over to a new thread in one fell swoop

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

I'll be honest... I used to check these type of threads religously, almost every day. It was usually the only thing I came on here for. But in the last year, I have checked out so hard. Not because of content or the posters on here, I just honestly don't give a damn anymore and/or don't trust anything with our track record as of late. I now just wait to see who signs, and of course with our track record of transfers, that's doesn't hold much weight anymore either lol.

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

Yeah I think Dematrius Davis was the last straw for me. I didn't even have much hope at the time he committed, but all of the insiders were saying we had him locked down right up until he flipped. Just not much point in keeping up with it when nobody knows what's going on until signing day.

Such a shame too, as he may have been able to do something at VT. Seems like he is going to be buried and competing hard at Auburn for playing time.

I saw DD at Auburn's spring game and another open spring practice. While short for a QB, he looks good. Already looks like Auburn's second best QB, if not their best. Would not be at all surprised if he is Nix's backup by the time fall season comes around. It sucks that he flipped, but that's the recruiting world.

I live in Houston and many of my coworkers are heavily tied into the local high school football scene. They knew about this before tkp did. Its common knowledge amongst them that auburn came in with $$$.

I would say that we have plenty of RB on the roster, but could see 3 transfer by the end of summer for all I know.

247 just gave 2021 signee Keli Lawson a fourth star. Can probably expect D.J. Harvey to get one as well in the future.

By no means does this absolve the recruiting failures and misses of the past few years, but it's encouraging to say the least. Especially when a lot of people have been negative towards 3* signees.

With his size and athleticism he was always gonna be better than his rating imo

DJ did get a 4 star rating from 247 last week!

A zero 4 star class is now a two 4 star class, which is great to see! Like I said last time, the pandemic really messed up people's ratings and I would find this an encouraging sign that the coaches scouted, at least in these 2 cases, pretty well. I know we need to bring in some blue chippers (and we need a closer on staff to do that, not sure yet if any of the defensive hires are that guy since we haven't seen them in action) but I feel like every class we have a few criminally under rated kids that show out early for us. Can't wait to see these guys make an impact early in their careers

And this will be the start of how people justify Fuente staying.

He is going to be called an expert at finding stars before everyone else does.

Previously LowBrau.

Wait, but getting two players who are rated four stars is objectively good? Do you really hate Fuente so much that you're upset our recruiting class got better?

I don't hate Fuente. I've given him his time, and i'm ready to move on at this point. I haven't seen anything that is going to change where things currently are and heading. His career is like the longest edging i've ever been through.

I'm sure there are people who are going to point at this to justify him staying and say he is a great evaluator. Is he? Hard to tell. And who knows, had these kids received offers from others, they probably wouldn't be heading to VT.

Previously LowBrau.

So, I hedged my enthusiasm about being a good evaluator by saying we still need to land top end blue chip recruits to make noise in the conference/nationally. I think if you can land top end recruits (like, even a couple a cycle) and ALSO be good at evaluating lesser known recruits especially for scheme fit that it would be a recipe for success. I'm not saying he nails every eval, there definitely seems to be some throw it against the wall and see if it sticks happening (RB/WR/QB?). I'm 100% certain that the evals for all offers aren't starting and stopping with Fuente so I am not ready to give him all the credit or blame either way when it comes to that. Obviously, he's the head honcho/hokie and naturally the credit/blame will find it's way to him since he is in charge of the whole show. Point being, I am thrilled to see these guys made a step up in their high school career before they show up to BBurg and I hope some of the other guys that signed with us end up being "diamonds in the rough" too.

I'm with you on being happy these guys get the bump. I also agree with you that it would be great to have 4 4 stars already and then get a couple of guys who get that 4 star, or even a 3 star.

That being said, I'm always excited when any kid wants to be a Hokie.

But I think the Fuente experiment is done for. Cause even if he gets these evals and bumps, something isn't panning out on the field and turning into wins, and literally some of these kids aren't even making it to the field.

Previously LowBrau.

If they both bump to a four-star ranking, it'll give us a top 40 recruiting class.

While I too would love to see better recruiting, it is amazing to think that two subjective ratings bumps to EXISTING recruits could swing the preception of class quality and recruiting success that much. Crazy game.

Is this what Fuente meant by having the best "developmental program in the country?"

Honestly, you have to give the recruiting team credit for this one, they found a legitimate diamond in the rough at a needed postion. If Lawson can step in and be a second-string LB with McCray this year, we actually have some depth with a TON of upside for 2022.

I don't think it swings the perception of the class quality and recruiting success at all, personally. DJ Harvey was already almost a 4*, so a small bump into 4* range isn't a big deal, and was already the star of the class.

Keli Lawson has been frequently discussed as a potential high ceiling guy who was underrated due to injuries and missing camps pre-COVID + COVID pauses canceling further ones. I'm only slightly more excited about him now than I was when the evals were coming in originally on him. Hearing he excelled in the Spring season was definitely positive news, which is why I say I am more excited now, but not a huge change.

Additionally, moving into a top 40 class doesn't really move the needle for me on where I believe we need to be recruiting. It's functionally no different from where we were before.

That said, as I've mentioned many times over the past year and others have as well (including in this in particular recruiting thread), I think the 2021 class has potential to be one of the most inefficient classes in terms of rankings in a decade because of the limited seasons, lack of camp circuits, lack of in-person evals. So there is a chance that we really do have a class with far more "hidden gems" than previous classes. Time will tell.

Additionally, moving into a top 40 class doesn't really move the needle for me on where I believe we need to be recruiting.

A top 30 class was a Beamer hallmark even into his final years. That's 2 additional impact 4 stars, or 1 high impact 5 star that moves the class/program forward. That's what Fuente is missing right now. This year, we've got to close on those kids.

TKPhi Damn Proud
BSME 2009

You want to make a huge impact, make it the RIGHT high star recruit. The program needs the "franchise" QB and maybe one skill player, and one defense disruptor. That is the difference between a .500 team and a top 20 team. Now playoff caliber, that is another level.

I think you have to step back and realize the casual fan probably didn't realize that DJ Harvey was basically already a 4 star or knew that Lawson had a major upside when compared to his rating. The amount of comments (not necessarily on here, probably more on 247 posts on FB) that lament the fact that we signed no 4 star recruits this past cycle as an event that VT will never recover from was staggering. I doubt those same people hear about these ranking changes but hopefully some of them do and realize that argument is silly

Outside validation is always a positive because unaware people are always going to latch on to it. We have to stem the recruiting tide and Lawson becoming a 4* is a positive. Snagging guys like Orji and Dickson are positives. We put ourselves in a hole with top-end recruits and we need to continue to make positive changes around the edges that would hopefully lead to guys like Givens, Brown, and Covil to commit.

Additionally, moving into a top 40 class doesn't really move the needle for me on where I believe we need to be recruiting. It's functionally no different from where we were before.

I agree it doesn't change anything functionally however from a pure optics perspective, being in the top 40 is better than not being in the top 40. We're still digging ourselves from the '18 hole and a 5-6 season in '20 did not help. Anything that demonstrates a tangible upward trend is a positive, even if it is off-season window dressing.

100% agree. A hallmark of the Beamer era was taking advantage of recruiting inefficiencies. Within this one recruiting class, we have at least one data point that Fuente and Co. found a recruiting inefficiency. Just hoping Fuente was right about "getting a bunch of guys that no one has even heard about".

This is the recruiting class that will ultimately demonstrate this staff's recruiting compentence. If we fall flat, major changes need to be made.

I think this moreso highlights how much Covid has effected the 2021 and 2022 recruit rankings. Lawson is currently showing as a lower end 3 star at around a .84 ranking. A bump up to a 4 star is a pretty big reevaluation. I think we're gonna see a lot of guys outperforming or underperforming their rankings from these 2 classes.

While I would like for us to get more consistent at bringing in some blue chip recruits and keeping them out of the portal, you gotta say, Fuente and Co. does seem to have a knack for finding one or 2 diamonds in the rough with each class. 2020 - Dorian Strong, 2019 - Barno, 2018 - Tenuta, Waller, and 2017 - Darrisaw, Farley. Hopefully, with Covid seeming to have drastically effected ratings this year we can end up adding Lawson and a few more names to that list down the line, but who knows.

Gobble Till You Wobble

It's also not entirely a COVID reevaluation - he was also hurt and missed camps in the time leading up to the COVID pause. He was someone the staff prioritized precisely because they knew he had massive potential and locked him down before everyone could evaluate him. This was someone that a lot of the 247 national guys were saying had the potential to absolutely explode in the rankings.

I honestly believe (call me optimistic, orange and maroon glasses-wearing, etc.) but the summer camps this June could really swing things in recruiting. We haven't had on-campus events in two years. All the big misses recently (DD included) were guys that never set foot on-campus in an official capacity. Combine that with the new facilities, the new dorms finishing up... there is a lot of those ancillary things that could really help us moving forward.

Gobble Till You Wobble

Virginia Tech got a crystal ball for another offensive tackle out of Texas named Jakson LaHue.

He is listed between 6'5" and 6'7" in different articles and sites, 285 pounds, and is currently unranked. Has a TON of Ivy League offers as well with no P5 offers which fit the mold of some of Vice's project guys.

I'm ok with OL projects. I never expect somebody to come in as a Freshman and play at a high level on the line. Bodies need to develop.

At least we won't lose him to UNC...

Is coronavirus over yet?

They're in his top 10 tho?

Vroom Vroom

I see two potential stud RBs in VA and I think "he's going out of state". Crystal balls for UNC and PSU. It is annoying. We used to be able to lock up RBs with no problem at all and now we can't. Hopefully Herbert's season has shown that a RB can be successful here, but I'm not holding my breath.

UNC is in it hard for Michael Allen from Rose Hill and Omarion Hampton from Cleveland. I think they lead for both, and are likely the two that end up at UNC since they're in state

This is the most frustrating thing to me. We used to be able to land at least one if not two solid running backs every year...or at least only have a year in between the next guy playing....after Wilson left it's been nothing. We haven't had a back anywhere near the normal back that we used to except for Herbert who unfortunately was only with us for a year. I don't know how we get another legit college RB rotation coming to VT. I'm not saying we have to land every top star running back but not pulling in solid running back recruits definitely hurts.

Never thought I'd see the day we were recruiting against Charley Wiles, but here we are. (I know, I know, we did last class too, it's just hitting home for me, now).

I like Hopper, maybe he gets us to Eleven wins.

TKPhi Damn Proud

Really? When many were complaining about Wiles' recruiting prowess and shrugging off (or outright cheering on) Wiles' dismissal, I was saying "be careful what you wish for".

The worst case scenario was Wiles going to NC State.

Hard to argue with that.

I really like Hopper. He's a guy who I think would be a force on the inside of our defense, plus we have a great shot at him. Knotts is a baller but I don't think we really have a shot. Simmons is intriguing too.

He told those guys:

Pain is Temporary, Chicks Dig Scars
Glory is Forever, Let's Go Hokies!!

2022 3-star WR Ike White (5'11", 185 St. Frances Academy, Baltimore) has a top 5 of Boston College, Cincy, Maryland, Minnesota, and the Hokies. He has a Blacksburg visit booked for June 18.

Interesting. Looks like the 3 of them all committed to Louisiana Monroe at the same time last year. They must be a tight group, cool to see we could get him on campus in a PWO capacity. Love getting kids that know how to win

Dude was apparently the best player on the field in the State Championship game against Lake Taylor. If he's PWO, it seems like a steal. Glad to see us getting some talent from SW Va.

For what it's worth, I don't think the Newsome kid was playing for Lake Taylor.

Whoa! A 545 lb squat for a high school senior QB?! That's crazy, right?

Please tell me if I'm off-base. I've been coaching girls soccer for a long time so my reference is probably way off.

A 545lb squat is super impressive for basically anyone.

I thought so, but hate assuming and being wrong. Thanks! I'm glad he's going to be a Hokie!

are we to assume that Syracuse, Wake Forest, Duke and Louisville also had 0 given their exclusion from the list altogether? On the plus side, we're not the only ACC school to get 0. It's always darkest before the dawn ~ Thomas Fuller

Yeah the only good thing about multiple ACC schools not recruiting blue-chip players is that it means we aren't at as substantial of a talent disadvantage as we could be, but overall it's a very negative sign of the quality of the ACC and it where it stands in the minds of recruits, despite existing largely within the most college football crazy part of the country.
