Ngl, this Lightning v Panthers match up is super exciting

VB born, class of '14

That game was nuts. Disappointed the Cats dropped it, but that matchup has some potential for some fireworks

That game was fucking amazing... that was epitome of playoff hockey... scoring back and forth, hard hitting, amazing saves, and high energy.

I hope this series goes 7, with Cats winning in the end

What's everyone's opinions on how Tampa is working around the salary cap by using the LTIR? Stamkos and Kucherov just happen to both be perfectly healthy the first game of the playoffs. Tampa should be like $20 million over the salary cap.

Edit: useful information to compare the lightning to other teams. Below is a list of the teams with the highest salary allocated to LTIR.

Lightning - $17.3 million
Blues - $8.6 million
Islanders - $6.9 million
Canucks - $4.5 million
Blackhawks - $4.4 million
Ducks - $4.1 million

Not super thrilled how this game 2 between the Bruins and Caps is being called by the refs. Too ticky tak for my liking

The refs are only calling it if the other guy retaliates Jensen hit him but smith hit him in the face twice big time to suit.

The Marchand-Mantha nonsense was more ridiculous IMO.

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

Yep, rat fuck gets to spear Mantha in the groin then smack him in the face with his stick, and Mantha get's two minutes! Then that little piece of shit scores the game winning goal.

Where's the beef?

Caps 1 - Refs 1. Series tied. That was a weird game from the officiating crew.

Not weird. Awful!

Where's the beef?

I was trying to not let my emotions get the best of me, but the rat comment you had is more my sentiment. I have choice words on the crew right now and am refraining from voicing it. Going to be a long series ahead if it stays that way.

Yeah, I let my emotions go. Haha.

Where's the beef?

That Taylor Hall goal was absolutely disgusting

Yup horrid performance tonight and no decent goalie is hurting a poor defensive effort. Series is over and wouldn't be surprised if Boston do it in Washington in the next game. They badly needed people like Mantha or kuzy to help out but man they've been quiet in the playoffs.

Welp... Series going at least five games. Wish the Canes could've pulled that out. Can't let Nashville tie it 2-2

Canes with two double OT losses in a row. Hope getting back to Raleigh can get them back in the win column.

Capacity is going up to >15,000 for the next game and beyond, be it Game 7 or Game 1 of the next round.

I never saw the puck go in last night. Just saw everyone's hands go up, and then complete pandemonium in the stands around me. Complete nuthouse.

Hope we finish this off tomorrow. If we move on, we'll need a bit of rest before Tampa or Florida.

I am torn. Have tickets to Game 7, but I agree the last 3 games have been grueling and the team could use an extra day or two of rest. Particularly Slavin.

Caps since not renewing Trotz: 5-12 in playoffs, three first round exits.

Trotz: 19-15, three series wins.

Hope the window isn't shut but they need to get younger and healthier.

Completely agree, but I gotta say... at least we aren't Edmonton โ˜  yikes

Caps need to re-tool the entire roster at this point. They won't re-build while Ovi and Backstrom are still playing, but they need to take a serious look at the roster and shake things up. Losing a player to Seattle could possibly help with the cap numbers, and I won't be surprised if Kuzy is no longer a member of the team either at the expansion or the entry draft. $7.8 Mil for a guy who is streaky, and who doesn't seem to mesh with the coach as well as being involved in a few off ice things with the 2 bouts of COVID (I know this could just be unlucky and isn't necessarily an attitude thing, but him and the other 3 Russians earning quarantine the first go round and him and Samsonov earning a trip to the list on the second one do raise a flag to some extent) and the IIHF coke ban makes you call into question his overall attitude. You can use him to get a few pieces even with his modified NTC.

The Caps looked old, beat up, and slow and Ovi and Backstrom aren't getting any younger. The other question being what does Ovi's contract look like? $10 mil? $11 mil? hometown discount of like $9.5 mil? That's also going to shape the Caps moving forward for the next 4 years or so.

What a spectacular collapse by the Oilers last night. Wife and I turned the channel to the game, saw it was 4-1 and she wanted to go back to watch the post-game coverage of the Caps. When that finished, we turned back to NBCSN thinking the game was over, and then heard "Overtime Intermission report". After taking a few seconds to process, and using reddit figured out what happened. The hockey gods did not like Archibald's low bridge attempt and the Oilers are on the brink with 2 of the best forwards in the league. Incredible.

Lots of thoughts about the Caps, and what needs to change this offseason. Most of all, I'm struck by the feeling that except for the magic of 2018, this is a team that's still built to win in the regular season but not in the playoffs.

Playing a heavy, physical game only works if you do it consistently. The Caps didn't seem overly physical after game 1. Dunno if that's because they're old and banged up or what, but TBH this just feels like an excuse for why they're slow more than anything else.

For all their vaunted physicality, the Caps had zero net-front presence. Go back and watch 2018 highlights; there were a bunch of dirty, greasy goals that were key to the run. Not taking credit away from the B's defensemen or Rask, but the Caps made it easy on them for the most part.

The PP is a disaster. Their inability to enter the zone was painful to watch. The slingshot needs to be buried with a stake pounded through its heart for good measure. And even once they do get set up, too often it's four guys standing around waiting for a chance to pass to Ovi. I'm not saying you don't take advantage of his strengths, but they need to put a lot more focus on creating chaos in front of the goalie and not settling for low-danger shots from outside.

I'm done with 92 (aka Semin 2.0). I don't know if it's a simple lack of work ethic or something more complex, but the light isn't coming on and now he's a negative influence on young guys like Samsonov as well. I don't know how best to get rid of him, but I think they need to. Can he be traded? Does letting him go to Seattle provide enough cap win to offset the loss of a talented-but-maddeningly-inconsistent player?

I wonder how hurt some of the guys really are. Carlson may be overrated, but he's not that bad. And something is clearly wrong with Backstrom.

I don't know if it's injuries, or age, something else entirely, but once again the stars virtually disappeared in this series. Whatever it is, they need to figure it out. The 4th line's energy was amazing, but we need that same intensity from the top 6!

It doesn't have to be a "blow it up" offseason, but I think major changes are necessary. If the Caps are going to re-sign Ovi and want to put him in a position to contend for another cup before he retires, there needs to be a youth movement around him. Time for some of their prospects to get a chance, and to move on from some guys whose performance, age, or cap impact make them expendable.

"Those who jump into the void owe no explanation to those who stand and watch."

Agree on many points. This team is very frustrating sometimes, whether its the players not showing everything they can bring on the ice (Kuzy) or the coaches not making game/season adjustments.

1) Kuzy definitely needs to go. He's a cancer and obvioulsy doesn't give a shit... Whether that's not protecting him during expansion draft, or trying to get ANYTHING for him in a trade... This expansion draft couldn't come at a better time.

2) I would NOT be surprised if Ovechkin isn't in a Caps jersey next year. I think he knows window is closed and a roster shake up is imminent. Unless the Caps are ok with being an average team for next 3-4 years, paying Ovechkin 10-11m/year would not be smart. He's not going to take any less than he's making now.

3) The team needs a youth movement. Look at the list of players on current roster that are 25 or younger. I get they were trying to be a Cup contender while OV was/is here, but the bad contracts and trading away good young talent is about to cripple this team. IMHO should not have traded away Burky and Vrana. (Not impressed with Mantha)... Fans better pray McMichael, Lapierre, Fehervary, Alexeyev, etc. better turn out to be good NHL players.

4) Need to stop paying average players money they aren't worth... Panik for example... And as a result, we consistently have to trade first/second round picks to get their salary hit off our cap number.

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

Def agree on kuzy but what was weird is last night was his best performance outside of the cross check on Rask the top two lines were out of wack all series really and need some work. Mantha started hot but got cold after and didn't do much in the playoffs.

Backstrom looked like he wasn't fully fit to me he wasn't skating right and just seemed off a bit, luckily Eller was skating well but they need to maybe work to reduce the workload on him as he ages.

I don't see them letting Ovi walk I think if they shed kuz or someone else he will be back but they definitely need to sort out the goalie position and defensively they need to get some younger legs in there.

I don't think they need to blow it up they just need more youth and the signings they make need to work out for the best.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

I am not sure how many players they are going to sign (especially if they bring back OV) to try to bring in a youth movement because all the older players are signed through 2023 or further out and like I said before, we need to stop trading away assets so we can start reloading the prospect system because it is bare.

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

I wonder how happy McDavid is right now and if he will want a change of scenery after getting swept by the J-E-T-S! JETS! JETS! JETS! last night. Really tough series with a triple overtime winner (off of a McDavid turnover), but I think it helped to once again expose the depth of that roster. You had Nurse play like 70000 minutes last night and you had Koekkoek play 9:58 and Bear 14 minutes. Aside from Chiasson who scored, I think the only other names I heard during the broadcast for the Oilers were McDavid, Drai, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.

Yeah it seemed like those 3 were on the ice for the entire game. The Oilers are really fun to watch especially with Mike Smith coming out of the crease every other minute, it's too bad they won't be playing likely the Leafs. But the Winnipeg story is great and I've been cheering for them.

If McDavid demands a trade, that will likely bring Eichel's value way down. That would suck for Buffalo, but doesn't everything?

Tristan Jarry is doing his best "Marc Andre Fleury circa 2011" impression

Edit: it was actually 2012 when he imploded against Philly

Yeah Barry trots was totally not worth what he wanted. One of the dumbest decisions I've ever seen and man I'm glad I have someone to root for still.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

I'm reading that first part as sarcasm, because the decision to let him go after 2018 didn't make any sense then and makes less sense every passing year.

Outside it's night time, but inside it's LeDay

Remember they didn't let him go. They offered him a contract extension at far below market rate for a Cup winning coach.

Which I consider "letting go" because they didn't make a serious effort at bringing him back

Outside it's night time, but inside it's LeDay

Very much sarcasm. You finally after years of toiling away in the first round win the damn cup and instead of rewarding the coach with a proper deal you try to get a hometown discount and are left with egg all over. I love what hes done in NY and he has them purring right now. Leonsis has typically been smart but that one decision might take the cake as the dumbest thing a GM/Owner has done in DC in a long time and man oh man does it take some beating to best what Snyder does on a daily basis.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

The McDavid discussion, which I think is a total non-starter for Edmonton unless McDavid holds them hostage, really is focuses on the wrong thing. That management team needs to watch the film closely. Edmonton had zero defensive structure, hanging Mike Smith out to dry time and time again. Smith is a better goalie than he has been given credit for, but has been cursed with always being on teams that stink defensively. They need to get a sound defensive structure, and then if McDavid doesn't want to play ball with that structure, then they consider moving him for a Gretzky-like ransom. But, because perception issues, a McDavid trade would likely mean the end of the franchise in Edmonton. That fan base has been burned by Gretzky, Messier, and Pronger trades for paltry returns. If they can't win with a generational talent like McDavid, something is badly wrong there.

Rangers fans are having a debate right now after the JD/Gorton firings (more toughness? more skill?) and they are missing the plot. The teams advancing in the playoffs are talented teams which play structured physical games. The Islanders, Bruins, and Tampa have systems and cultures, and the talented players fit those ethos's. The Rangers have changed their identity time and time again since the 2004-2005 strike (the Flying Jagrs, the Black and Blueshirts, AV Speed Transition, and now the Youth River Hockey Rangers.) They need to find a culture that works in NYC and stick with it.

Will the Leafs stop being a mess of broken dreams, or will Montreal keep up the track record of the Leafs being the Leafs? Find out Monday night.

I'd say both. Avalanche are a solid team, and a road game after game 7 can be tough

Maybe they shouldn't have benched Fleury against maybe the leagues most complete offense

The Leafs fold like a cheap chair again. At this point, I don't think a 4-0 series lead would be safe for them and this core. Really impressive that they can't even get past the 1st round for almost 20 years.

Dear Kyle Dubas... K'Andre Miller, Alex Georgiev and Strome for John Tavares, you eat 2 million in cap space. Come on... you know you want to do it... :D

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

I can't say I like the idea of moving Miller, but the hilarity of winning with Tavares might outweigh all of that

They could really use some help on defense and in net. We'll trade them Gardiner and Reimer if they want

Mark Schiefele, COME ON DOWN! You're the next contestant on SPIN! THAT! WHEEL!

That was not a good hit last night by him. Kind of a textbook charge based on the distance covered. Pretty unnecessary as well. It was nice seeing Ehlers helping to protect Evans on the ground from the scrum that was going on.

Yeah, hope he gets at least a couple games to sit and think about it.

4 games seems like a lot. I don't necessarily disagree with it - it just seems like a lot given what Wilson and Reaves got recently, especially when you consider that Scheifele was at least making a hockey play trying to prevent a goal

If his intention was to prevent a goal, I fail to see how clobbering Evans in the head after the goal was scored was going to do that

"I have a PLAN. You just need to have a little goddamn faith, Whit. I just need. more. MONEY." - Justin van der Linde

I mean it wasn't a great play given he sprinted the length of the ice and looked like he left his feet which is why i'm ok with 4 games.

Just saying that it was a bang bang play and actually relevant to the game. I guess it was a poorly executed (borderline dirty) hockey play vs banging a guys head into the ice in skirmish after the play which has nothing to do with the game

Both of those events should have ended up with a suspension, and one for a lot longer than the other due to the player being a known repeat offender.

"I have a PLAN. You just need to have a little goddamn faith, Whit. I just need. more. MONEY." - Justin van der Linde

especially given it was regular season too. I know the NHL usually gives the "playoff discount" when it comes to suspensions, but that wasn't the case there

The Wilson thing was so ridiculously overblown due to the media coverage because of his past and that laughable statement by the Rangers. I've literally seen folks on social media (which of course is full of scorching takes) describe it as "attempted murder".

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

Also the next night Crosby slammed someone's head into the ice and a few weeks later Tuuka Rask was punching someone at the bottom of a pile vs the Caps.

Islanders Lightning will be a fun one to watch. Game 7 for sure.

VGK Montreal I'm going with VGK in 5.

TKPhi Damn Proud
BSME 2009

I got VGK in 6, TB in 7 (but I sadly don't know how much I believe that TB will win). VGK in 7 in the SCF.

I don't think Vegas will have an easy time coming off of that series with Colorado, but what a letdown the Avs were after looking so dominant in the first round and game 1 of round 2. The wheels fell off the wagon and Vegas took every advantage after that.

TB/NYI I think is a full on toss up for who wins. I was going to say TB has the fire power, but I think I saw something saying that NYI had scored the most goals so far this playoffs. I mean it helps when you had the statistically worst goalie in the league in R1 on the other side (Jarry) but you still gotta get the puck home.

Let's play everyone's favorite game:
BOSTON'S WHEEL OF EXCUSES

- Kevan Miller over Chara
- Tuukka Rask
- The refs
- TD Garden fans
- Don Sweeney
- Bruce Cassidy
- No depth... again
- Jacobs is an asshole
- They should've won in 2019
- The refs
- Biased league

I laugh at Boston, now only need the Islanders to lose then I'll be happy about the playoffs and don't care who wins, just want good games.

Also since I missed it earlier:

LUL Maple Leafs you failed in the easiest division to even make it past the FIRST ROUND, pathetic. Urinatingtree already did a congrats video for you so that means it will be hilarious while he roasts you during the Hater's Guide of Stanley Cup Final video.

Edmonton you are fucked without depth, also Winnapeg that was just sad getting swept by Montreal (who should have lost to Toronto but a polished shit is still shit) you are fucked also.

Central I think was the toughest division, no hate towards them because most games were fun to watch and it could have been anyone from that divison to go far.

West division, hmmm..... Very top heavy so St. Louis couldn't do anything. Minnesota damn that was tough but overall better than previous years so at least there's something positive. Colorado you choked, your jerseys need choking hazard symbols to warm fans of the danger.

I won't forget about my team the Flyers:
WHAT DA FUQ?! Get the fuck out of my sight Villy you ruined Hart, you ruined Ghostisbere, you ruined Patrick, you ruined the TEAM. Making me have hope from last year to the beginning of the season is terrible thing to do when it gets thrown away by midseason.

May the Hockey God give me the bounty of me laughing at the Islanders and North division while providing great games and glorious saves with awesome goals.
