Associate Head Coach Chester Frazier to Illinois

This hurts.

Coach Frazier was with the Hokies for 2 seasons after a 7-year stint at Kansas State. Best of luck to Coach as he returns to his alma mater.

Whatever strategy the Hokies decide on from here (promote? replace?), they'll need to get cracking. Big opportunity to generate some recruiting momentum before the dead period ends at the end of the month.

Gonna be interesting to see if we promote Christian Webster or go out and look for another top assistant

Love Webster. I hope we do what it takes to hang onto him long-term. Interested to see if he becomes MY's right hand. Don't know who else would be a reasonable target/good fit.

Darris Nichols just got hired at Radford, but man, what a fit he'd make for Mike Young.

-From Radford, VA
-Played four seasons at WVU (2004-08)
-WVU grad asst (2010)
-Assistant at Northern Kentucky (2011-13)
-Wofford (2013-14)
-Louisiana Tech (2014-15)
-Florida (2015-2021)

Nothing but high, high praise in everything I've read and heard.

Again, just spitballing, but you could promote Webster and take a look at Jamal Brunt (VCU assistant)

From Baltimore, MD
Played for Mike Rhoades at Randolph-Macon (1999-2003)
Randolph-Macon, Assistant Coach (2003-05)
Richmond, Director of Operations (2005-07)
Richmond, Assistant Coach (2007-13)
Richmond, Associate Head Coach (2013-15)
Miami (Fla.), Assistant Coach (2015-18)
VCU, Assistant Coach (2018-present)

When he was hired at Miami to coordinate offense, they made the tournament 3 of his 4 years there (including a Sweet 16 appearance) and won 20 games each season. When he came to VCU to handle defense, "the Rams posted the seventh best defensive efficiency rating (89.5) in the country in 2018-19." AND he's been a great recruiter everywhere he's been, you know, IF you're interested in such a guy with a footprint from Baltimore to Richmond.

I'm just a dumb guy on the internet, so I don't know anything and should never be trusted to make important decisions, but I'm talking myself into one other staff hire, whether they're interested or not

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

One of those can't have nice things right.

Damn that's a big vacancy, it'll be interesting to see how they fill it

Not that familiar with our basketball assistants - how much does this hurt us? Is there potential here for an upgrade? Will this put us in jeopardy of losing any existing/potential recruits or players?

Losing your associate HC when you're a program on the rise is rarely a good thing, but there's definitely the opportunity to bring in an exciting new face. One advantage is we can use the hire to generate buzz in the week or two (depending on how quickly we move) before the recruiting dead period ends.
As for specific current recruits, I'm not sure, but I do know that Webster, not Frazier, was our point man on Tre Mitchell when his high school recruitment was going on.

generate buzz

I really doubt he's coming back just to be an assistant, and I don't think I'd want that anyways

"What are you going to do, stab me? - Quote from Man Stabbed

Ugh, man. This stinks. Love it for Frazier, not only is it his alma mater but it's also a better launching point for a higher tier mid major job.

Going to be fascinated by what CMY does. Really hope he branches out a little bit. The best thing he did when he took the Tech job was getting Frazier from K-State and Antwon Jackson from Cincinnati. Two guys with recruiting ties and power conference experience.

Maybe the biggest blow was that he's CMY's "defensive coordinator", a huge part of what the team does defensively. This isn't quite like Beamer losing Foster in the mid-2000s, but it's about as impactful a loss as the basketball program could have outside of Aluma declaring.

Poach Mike Pegues from Louisville (DC native, Dematha and U Delaware alum, coached at VCU, Delaware, then 6 years at Xavier) and bring Roosevelt Wheeler with him. There, I fixed it.

I read "Mike Pegues" but my mind went "Lamont Pegues" and I was very confused.

Well....I read "Poach Mike Pegues" and thought of something altogether different...and nefarious. As in, seems a bit harsh, if you catch my meaning

Ignorant football fan here - is this tongue in cheek? Could we actually pull an assistant from Louisville?

Twitter me

I was only half-joking. Every situation is different, but Pegues would be a tough pull. Pegues followed Chris Mack from Xavier to Louisville, and Louisville has a basketball budget that's like third in the country behind Duke and Kentucky (VT's has been in the 50s). While I don't have individual figures, it's safe to say their assistants get paid paid. Personally, I believe Webster is more than ready and deserving of a promotion. It would take a real eye-popping candidate to change my mind.

I hear you on that. Love Webster, and that's probably the smartest way to go/keep continuity. Would just love an extra crooter (though apparently Giltner isn't too shabby.)

There's a potential future where everyone slides up a seat and Ace gets promoted, which I don't love but could be worse I guess.

Could be. But I'd love to add a proven defensive coach who can recruit and who can specifically recruit the DMV and Richmond. This is why I'm interested in Jamal Brunt out of VCU for one of the assistant spots. He's from Baltimore and most of his playing and coaching career has been in the Commonwealth. When Mike Rhoades reunited with Brunt and brought him to VCU to handle defense in the 2018-19 season, the Rams went from allowing 74.8 ppg in 2017-18 to 61.9 ppg. Even when their SOS improved the seasons after, the defense stayed strong (65.2, 62.7).

As for recruiting at a high level, we can ask Miami (FL):

Where Jamal Brunt's impact was perhaps most felt was in recruiting, where the assistant helped Miami form its highest-rated class ever in 2017, bringing in the 7th-ranked haul of Lonnie Walker IV, Chris Lykes, and Deng Gak.

Those players had 247 ranking composite scores of .9946 (5-star out of PA), .9726 (4, DC), and .9252 (4, NJ).

After his arrival at VCU, the Rams signed players like Nah'shon Hyland (.9693, 4, DE) and Jarren McAllister (.8723, 3, VA) who originally committed to play for VT.

Dude wants to be a head coach. What better way to challenge yourself and raise your profile than joining an ACC program on an upward trajectory.

Toooootally. Would love that.

Just saw what I can only assume was your tweet about this, and was coming to relay the info, lol

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

started as a half-joke, but with the Durr news and the Webbie rumors... now I just want to know.

For a second, I thought Illinois football had poached one of our coaches...and I was not pleased.

I'm still not pleased to lose him, but definitely breaking out my CMYpopcorn to see what happens next.

A lot tkp would have been quite pleased to offload one of our coaches lol

Big loss here in my opinion. I think we need to try and poach someone to replace him or promote Webster and fill his spot.

Side note - anyone looking for a good blacksburg house?
Link

WTF? $635k in Blacksburg? My neighbors house, which is bigger just sold for $700k in NoVa. When did Blacksburg get so expensive?

A four square like that would probably go for half that amount in Wythe County. Real estate is a wonderfully weird thing.

are you outside the beltway? Because (for a very brief time when I was looking casually) it was very rare for me to find anything inside the beltway that was less than 500k and if I did find such a house it was going to be ~1000 sq ft.

It's always darkest before the dawn ~ Thomas Fuller

oh yeah outside the beltway. But for BBurg to compete with housing at all is insane to me.

While we wish-list and wait, we should hear something this week on two fronts: a hire and Bede.

Again, unless there's a crackerjack world-shaking surprise candidate, I'm all about promoting Christian Webster to associate HC.

I'm all about promoting Christian Webster to associate HC.

As far as I'm concerned, CW should be named HCIW and should take over when CMY retires. Webster is going to be a superstar in college basketball and I would love to retain him even if he has no head coaching experience.

That's funny, I think of Giltner as the most likely next HC at VT.

Mike Young is only 58, a little early to crown a HCIW

This made me want to look up how old Greenberg is. He is 65 so he was 56 when he was fired. But the went down the Wikipedia hole and saw he coached at Long Beach State. For some reason I clicked on their page and saw that they changed their nickname. They are now the Long Beach State Beach, formerly known as the 49ers. Their nickname is literally Beach, no plural or anything. This has to be the worst nickname for any college athletics programs.

Damn, Mike Young doesn't mess around when it comes to assistants. Swing for the fences on every pitch, huh

I'm surprised he doesn't have back problems after dragging that 3rd leg around his whole life.

Who?

DeMatha currently have one '21 top 100 recruit (hard commit to UConn, not signed yet) and two '22 top 100 recruits:

Jordan Hawkins, Tyrell Ward and Rodney Rice

Is there any rule in college basketball where you can't recruit any players from a high school from which you hire their coach for a few years? Thought I remember hearing about some rule like that when we hired Dwayne Lawsons coach (dad?)

I could be wrong, but I think that's for lower level coaching jobs. As in we couldn't add someone in Ace's current position and then get a player from a school he coached at. I believe for a position like assistant coach they are assuming you wouldn't hire a coach just for one player.

THIS WOULD BE...

I'm going to mention that Pete Thamel has tweeted about Mike Young only one time. Maryland 247 mods believe this is a done deal and I don't disagree, given the unique circumstances.

So, whatever happens next, today I'm getting especially high off this smoke.
