Shibest is only one of three ST coordinators nominated.

Really?
I mean we've had pretty good special teams this year so sure.
EDIT: Looked up stats, changed adjective.
Hopefully last night won't be on the highlight reel. Except the onsides kick...that was a thing of beauty.
Is the Broyles award even trying anymore?
Where's all the hate for Shibest coming from? Is it recency bias because we gave up some returns last night? I feel like our special teams have been solid this year.
eh miss blocking kicks. We have gotten 2-3 over the last five years? Our field goal kicker struggles inside 30 yards but is a God from 40+?
Is anybody blocking kicks (punts) now? It seems with the 3 personal protectors scheme and rolling out 'rugby style' punters that it is extremely difficult to block them now. I think that's why we have focusing on returns.
Shibest has had 14 kicks/punts blocked by his units in the 6 seasons at VT
Frank's last 6 seasons were 12 blocks.
Yep, exactly my point - the changes to special teams from the 90's to the 2010's have reduced the number of blocked kicks.
They've been solid this year.
Unfortunately, they did have a couple of miscues on Saturday, before they tightened up in the second half. I'm sure that's affecting some folks' opinion right now.
he makes too much money for mediocre output and his salary came at the expense of other coaches who took paycuts
He was like top 5-7ish in ST coordinator pay a few years ago. And almost every ST coordinator in the country pulls double duty so please spare me a responding comment that he does TE's as well or whatever.
I agree with you completely. We talked about how we can't afford to pay coaches at a high level, but are at the top tier of the country in paying one of Fuente's buddies.
That 51 yd KO return by Syracuse in the fourth qtr was the set up for the SYR win. Romo had 6 touchbacks and zero returns for the entire game until the last KO. It only reaches the 4 yard line and SYR runs it back to our 45.
Not hating on Shibest, but that return killed us.
Special Teams under Shibest has been pretty consistently good except for 2020 stemming from the punt return woes. He has come up with some extremely creative trick plays and his success rate with them has been above average. Now factor in that the TE position is one of the few that has shown consistent player development. People like to whine about his salary but the reality is allotting 100k to another position coach doesn't move the needle in terms of outcomes.
Thanks to Robinson most likely. He was #1 as of last Saturday. But after this week's games he dropped to #3 in return yards which makes sense given the bad conditions in Miami yesterday.
With 59 nominees that's about one nominee per every 2 teams. I realize there is more than one assistant per team but I doubt we see any "Broyles House" commercials anytime soon..
I think it's time to admit that being nominated for that award is diminished when there are lots of candidates nominated.
Edit: Not to diminish Shibest's accomplishments this year, as VT has improved special teams play this year. (Well with the exception of the first half vs Miami.)
Special teams have been very good all year except for kick coverage against Miami.
I mean he has one of the best resumes on our team, years coach DL, a top recruiter in the MAC while at marshall
EDIT: this looks like it made it to the wrong thread ...
LMAO..until Miami's first 3 drives start at midfield because his guys can't cover kicks. LOL
To be fair, they seem to have fixed that later in the game.
The list got trimmed a bit.
Dan Lanning I'd guess.
in before "broyles semifinalist" gets added as another qualification for Gattis in the coaching search threads lol
