Wishing him the best going forward. Hopefully it is the start of a drizzle and not a deluge.

The transfer portal about be all...

And with the right hire, his name will come back out of the portal.

He's just the start imo...

Rumors of James Mitchell being next on 247. That one would sting.

Saw Mitchell put that one to rest on Twitter

He said give to me Roscoe

Um, no he didn't. He retweed this.

Obviously I want him to stay but it's very unstandable he wants to leave.

With him getting the 25 even though he's inactive it feels like a nice farewell thank you gesture πŸ₯²

Don't most players retweet anything that has them tagged?

This 2020 class is going to turn into one of the worst classes in P5 history... if there's anyone left to play

Haven't multiple players from that class been starting games this year?

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

There's been 5 players who have played meaningful time, so you aren't wrong.

16 players enrolled from high school and 5 have left already, including the top 4 players.

I don't know what the hit rate is for starters or meaningful contributors, but having such a small class will cause problems down the road. (These issues could be solved with the portal though.)

Reality check time. Being a starter in this team just means you beat out the other developmental projects for playing time, it doesn't necessarily mean on it's own that you're all that good. Credit to the guys for working hard to seize their chance, I just can't shake the reality that this roster is razor thin at the top and loaded with question marks and projects who were brought in to be developed by a staff that will largely be gone by Monday.

The 2020 class was 16 freshmen and average rating of .8498... and like vt2016 said above, 5 of the top 7 rated players have already hit the portal: Bryant, Wooten, Beadles, Saunders, and now DBJ. Next coach is gonna have a serious talent deficiency to fix quickly if we're going to be competitive any time soon.

"Not Great, Bob!"

Really hoping I am wrong on this, but I don't know if VT can make a bowl game until 2024. Maybe we pull an upset of Virginia - good grief, when Virginia is a serious upset - and make it this year. 2022 with a new coach installing a new system with players not recruited to play it and the lack of talent we have now even before graduations and portal departures hit, I expect a long year. Maybe we get back in 2023. Certainly possible if the rebuild goes well and quick, but no better than a coin toss to make it then. Got to give the new staff patience. But we also need to see a clear plan and improvement as we go along.

I have a feeling this post isn't going to age well.

I'm happy though. With luck the turn-around will be faster than I feared as well.

This is why Tech needs to hire someone who can recruit their ass off.

Recruiting their ass off would be the coaches' equivalent to players playing their nuts off, am I right?

Recovering scientist working in business consulting

This is correct.

For clarity, who needs to be the first in the gym and last one to leave?

The new Strength and Conditioning Coach. Whoever that is will low-key be one of the most important hires.

I could be totally off base, but it seemed like Gentry's work was visible up and down the sideline. Maybe Hilgart's was sufficient, but just not marketed as well? When was the last time we saw anyone pushing pickup trucks?

...with spirits true and faithful...

Hilgart definitely tried marketing his work with the before and after photos they release every year. The problem is, he is supposed to be molding them into stronger football players, not fitness models. Bulking then cutting is for posing on a stage or photoshoot, not for getting strong enough to make/break tackles and hold/get out of blocks.

Marketing doesn't matter when your eyes can look at the players on the field and see that they are practically the same size when they leave than when they got here. Just look at the arms of the players on other teams compared to ours. Hilgart's glamour photos cannot get out of town soon enough.

Don't recall who but there were some VT FB alumni saying that VT lead the ACC in "skinny legs" on Twitter.

This.

I dont care how the players look on Twitter or Instagram - I care about how they flatten opponents on the field. If you wanna be an instagram model thats fine, but dont eat up a scholarship while trying to do it.

and not just off, but like all the way off. entirely. our 2020 class currently stands as an 11 player class with average of 0.8411 rating. of those 11 players, 1 is a punter and 3 are running backs. That doesn't just hurt us now for our threes and twos, but it's going to absolutely kill us in 2023 when we have two seniors.

we thought the 2016 class was bad with Hewitt, Deablo, Belmar, and Floyd as the only real players who contributed as upperclassmen, just wait for this one. At least 2016 had other contributors along the way (even if ultiamtely transferred) in Ladler, Kumah, Tavante Beckett, TJ Jackson. Big oof for the 2020 class. Staff put all their eggs in the 2021 basket and whiffed big time and that was a big contributing factor to Fuente not sticking here long term. It's just untenable to compete at a high level without bringing in and developing talent.

We were going to get disruption with that class with the departure of Fuente anyway. This way, the new coach has plenty of room for the players he wants.

Hail, Portal!

We were going to get disruption with that class with the departure of Fuente anyway. This way, the new coach has plenty of room for the players he wants.

I don't even know what this means given that Fuente was head coach for an entire recruiting cycle after 2020. Class of 2021 is signed and on campus already. Now with a transitional class that we will be lucky to salvage into a top-30 class by avg rating, we're staring at three straight significantly subpar classes making up the roster. Next coach needs some patience because it's only gonna get worse before it gets better.

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

What it means is that we were going to be a rebuild, one way or the other.

The trauma has occurred already. does it matter if the patient had a broken hand before the leg and arm were broken?

Hospitalization was always going to be required.

I'd rather have a coach come in and retool a roster full of good players than inherit a bunch of 3* developmental projects and a roster that has as many scholarship running backs as linebackers.

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Sure, but it's almost NEVER going to be the case that you're stacked with talent when you've fired your coach.

As far as running backs, there are some talented ones (Blackshear, Thomas). Seems like the odds of playing goes way down if you're not in the top 5, so it's time for some housecleaning.

The point I was making is that this is what the portal is for. Outgoing AND incoming.

I don't think any of us disagree that we're not where we want to be. I just don't see the point of continuing to complain about the ranking of the 2020 class. For me, once we fired Fuente, that became water under the bridge.

If we're saying that the new coach is going to have his hands full, I think we're all in agreement here.

There is a wide range between "razor thin roster full of developmental projects" and "roster stacked with talent".

Portal will need to be our friend but MSU is the exception to what we've seen in cfb landscape really

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

That's all I'm saying.

When you've fired your coach, it's almost always because they're in the first category, not the second.

There may be some examples of rosters full of talent being left for the new coach, but I think it's not the usual case.

Our new coach better be calling UFs backup QB that was a highlight reel when he played.

At least the new coach can easily sell the concept of early playing time. Dare I say it, even 'Change the culture'.

Well they didn't develop talent over the first 5 years, what made you think they were going to start in year 6?

just saying that it's a double whammy for a coach to whiff on bringing in talent to then try to pivot from pulling in blue chippers to "being the best development program in the nation" without a strong consistent track record of player development outside of a few notable outlying success stories.

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

It's apparent now the "best developmental program" line was just spin to cover for their complete inability to recruit. Fu and his merry men were totally unprepared to manage the expectations and pressure of a P5 program.

Team Purple Parrots all day!

More ridiculous statement..?

A) best developmental program
B) best I've ever felt about the passing game

im gonna go with "ludicrous crap" regarding the suggestion that he take over calling plays from Cornelsen

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

They were probably worse development wise than recruiting too

This is fantasy. There is no coach on the radar (or pretty much any radar, really) who can take VT out of it's normal recruiting range.

i don't care if we wind up in our historical range of 20-25. I want a coach who puts in that effort, hires a staff that puts in that effort, can close on a 5* every now and then, can keep a few in-state bluechippers every year, lands the no-brainer kids instead of just sort of assuming they want to be here (KeAndre Lambert comes to mind), and actually maintains recruiting in that historical 20-25 range. In our years where the class rank is down (because they do happen) I want those years to be top 30-32 due to having a smaller class with a still-good rating and not 44 or 76 because we took a dozen project 3* RBs.

It's little wonder message board fans are perpetually angry and disappointed.

Yearrrrrrssss ago we were season ticket holders for uva football. No links to school other than living local. Then, the lads decided on v.t. and we became happy hokie fans to the point of embarrassing the boys. one of the saddest posts I ever read on the sabre was one fella who stated his wife left him because all he focused on was uva football's ailments and the sabre message boards. I stopped reading the sabre after that.
Pleased to be a hokie dad. A married hokie dad.

because we want to at least have some comfort that the program is largely being well-run?

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Huff Puff Pass plz

VT needs a coach who coach and a fundraising arm which can raise funds.

If both get appreciably better results, recruiting will get better. Otherwise, recruiting one's ass off will simply mean more second place finishes and hats left on the table.

We put the K in Kwality

Wait how should I interpret the 'TP' part?

Any way you like.

But I was going for Transfer Portal.

We put the K in Kwality

Auburn. Clearly a Toomer's Corner reference.

Not defending CJF or his recruiting by any means, but disagree with the notion of a total rebuild or no bowl expectations until '24. Good news for our next coach is we play in a historically weak conference /division with a typically soft schedule. We ain't playing in the SEC. Despite poor recruiting and poor player development we could have had a notably better record the last 2-3 years with better game day coaching and decision making. We lost at least a couple games this year that a better coach could have easily won. I'm hoping our next coach can quickly get us back to the 8-4 neighborhood, competing for the coastal, and building immediate momentum for HS and portal recruiting. We do have some solid guys on our roster that will hopefully return, albeit not 4 and 5 stars.
I'm hoping that for the most part guys that came to play for VT and CJF will be even more jazzed to play for VT and our next HC. And there are players our next HC will be ok to see exiting.

I think the portal will be critical to how quickly any coach can turn this around. We are losing a lot of key guys. I think we have some solid dudes on this roster, but we will have multiple holes to fill.
