Local Residents Unhappy About Tailgating

Well it looks like a few folks that live near the stadium might be raising some Cain regarding behavior with tailgaters. Seems that they're launching complaints to the university. Article was published yesterday (10/18) and updated today (10/19) from local 10 News.

Sounds to me like if you don't want to feel like you live near a college campus, then you probably shouldn't live near a college campus 🤷‍♂️

I'm going to guess that Lane Stadium and the tailgating culture existed years and years before these people moved in.

Bowden said she lived in her home since 2007.

Yep. Get the fuck outta here. You knew damn well what you were getting into when you moved to Center Street in 2007. Shit, I was attending large tailgates there when I was a student, and I graduated before you moved in, clown.

This is very similar to the epidemic hitting the racing community where tracks are being shut down all over the country right now because of these NIMBY assholes who intentionally move into the area knowing what they were getting into and then bitching to the town council about the noise until they shut the tracks down. I have no patience or sympathies for these people.

See also people moving in near a chicken farm, then complaining to have it shut down. (And complaining about the cost of chicken after that...) We actually have a statement that goes on new subdivision plats about the "right to farm" because of the zoning which shuts down a lot of the issues, but doesn't stop the dingii from being dingii.

Just got out of a meeting so I could watch the video. Lets just say they look and talk like just how I expected when I read the article. The faux concern and moral outrage is... sigh

You just damn well know they are peeking out their windows fuming over the event every weekend, blowing up 9-1-1 trying to get someone to come out, having used every excuse in the book to try and make it happen.

"It looks like there are.... 4, no FIVE kids on that balcony. FIVE, FRANK, FIVE. Where are the authorities to handle this?!?"

And you also know they are going out and canvassing/taking pictures of the tailgating area after everyone heads to the stadium to build their dossier for when they go public about their moral concern.

These are the people who send daily emails to the HOA board about your grass being too long.

I remember a case where a family had had a pig farm since the revolutionary war and they were forced to shut down when a subdivision was built next door and complained about the odors.

I'm going to disagree on the racetrack thing...
Tracks keep adding more and more classes and running later. On days when they have a special event, along with their regular races, it goes way late because they won't start earlier. I live a mile from a nearby dirt track. I have measured 85 decibels sitting on my porch very late at night. There is no excuse. I grew up there, I knew there would be races every Saturday. But it's getting worse.
My family has been on the same property since before cars existed. So, I think the whole "they were there first" thing is out the window.

OSHA 85 decibels for greater than 4 hrs, IIRC, is a hazard.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

It's like moving near an airport and complaining about noise from aircraft taking off close by.

Sounds like people dumber than dirt feeling entitled to complain about the world not catering to them.

I'm still salty they closed Southside Speedway in Chesterfield.

I am the heartbeat of Blacksburg. A fortress built out of stone but made with champions.

Or the people that live just outside of town that don't pay taxes yo the city so the city charges them for services like fire department, so the development complains and stops getting the fire service because they can get it from the next town over who isn't going to charge them. But then their insurance jumps because it takes a fire truck 15 more minutes to get to the houses now. So now everyone is paying more in insurance that the cost of fire service.

I'm sure at least some of their complaints are valid, but tbh all I hear when I read something like this is:

*Person moves next to airport built damn near 60 years ago*
*Airplanes take off/land constantly*
Person says "God these airplanes are so annoying I'm going to complain to the town council about it"

sponsoring a big event on campus

VT can't sponsor any student based event with alcohol since the majority of participants wont be over 21. I'm aware of this because I've had to host events on VT campus lol (https://campuslife.vt.edu/content/dam/campuslife_vt_edu/assets/event_pla...) So I'm just gonna assume this person doesn't know the rules around that.

Centerstreet is one of those situations where it's going to happen regardless, either there or somewhere else, you'd fight a losing battle trying to stop it. So VT does the smart thing imo and just keeps it contained in that general area. Dont live next to an airport if you dont want airplane noises.

Trespassing through her yard

This one I can understand the frustration, but how do you police that...you cant have cops at every person's yard. Curious to hear ideas/suggestions on how you could address this one. I personally would be a fan of motion sensor sprinklers. Harmless, funny, and gets the message across.

A lot of those streets don't have sidewalks, and the ones that do are kinda crappy. And with the stadium traffic, walking on edges of yards is inevitable. But, as mentioned throughout this thread, you choose where you live (fully knowledgeable about the lack of quality sidewalks and VT football and associated tailgating).

Lived there since 2007 and is only now complaining? I call bullshit. I have tailgated on Center St off and on since 2007 when I came home from active duty. It's not like Center St spontaneously got loud and crazy. It's been that way, at least, the entire time she's lived there.

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Yes and it's been occurring since then. Hence, she has obviously dealt with it for some time. Until recently she was given a platform to speak out on it. Case in point don't move near a location close to a sporting stadium.

It's probably more the realtor put the idea in her head. She moved onto a relatively cheap piece of property that was cheap because of the tailgating, airport noise, farm smells, etc. Now with the housing market going crazy they realized that they could make a boat ton of money more selling it if they stop whatever made it cheap in the first place.

This is from when the city of Roanoke put in speed reduction measures on Bullit and Jamison in SE. Everyone hated the idea of putting in traffic calming measures because it was making a straight road which you could easily speed down to one that you had to slow down and pay attention so you don't run over a curb. People just wanted to bitch about change and how it would harm them. I think the most harm was to tires that were popped from people hitting the curbs the first 2 years haha.

Also it made it on the Jay Leno headline section of his talk show.

Take a look at the photo...and the caption...

I'm confused. What am I specifically looking for? I thought I was providing context to the article and picture that was asked if real.

The cigarette in her hand, and the caption that says she's concerned about the noise of jackhammers affecting her unborn child...the irony of it.

To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
@BuryHokie #ThanksFrank

No I understand the irony of the picture. The bigger irony is that the people complaining were complaining about the city putting in traffic slowing measures to make the street safer for the people who lived on it. You know like her child in a couple months. This was the best the complainers could put forward in their effort to stop the project. This was the complaint after the work started. It was all just a position of I don't want anything to change where I live. The picture is the icing on the cake of the whole endeavor.

Whoever was in charge of layout there deserved a nice bonus that year. Gutsy move.

The photographer deserved a bonus that day, too, for capturing the irony.

There was a follow-up article on her about a week later:

https://roanoke.com/archive/criticism-doesnt-bother-smoker/article_c995b....

"I really don't pay that much attention to it," she said. "If people don't like it, that's their opinion. They've got theirs and I've got mine."

She has tried every way to quit without success, she said.

As for smoking while pregnant, she said her doctor told her "it would be good if I cut back, but if I totally quit, it would not only cause stress on me but it would cause stress on the baby."

Speaking generally, Eric Earnhart, spokesman for Carilion Health System, said any pregnant person who comes to its facilities "is going to be advised to quit smoking."

It is possible, he said, that a person having difficulty quitting would be advised at least to cut down.

Williamson said she has cut down from two packs per day to one-half pack.

Not condoning her smoking at all, but it sounds like she was really trying. Kudos to her for that, at least.

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

Regardless of whether or not the complaining is warranted, VT students (and whoever) have embarrassed our community and Hokie Nation this year. Urinating in people's yard? Hurling beer bottles/cans into people's property and then leaving them there? Throwing bottles at the stadium that then hit people in the head? When did anyone learn that was acceptable behavior? Or have our students just collectively lost their minds?

Until the students stop acting like 5-year olds, the complaints are perfectly warranted in my opinion.

Throwing bottles at the stadium that then hit people in the head

Well, we know of one place where that's been considered acceptable behavior

As a resident of Blacksburg since 2002, and having moved to downtown Blacksburg almost 2 years ago, I can 100% confirm the behavior of students, and fans in general, has really gone down hill this year. There is clearly a lot of built up energy and desire to cut loose, and it's showing in everyone's actions. Town is far more trashed, crowds are more rowdy and disrespectful of property, and there are clearly more people out and about as well.

Between the effects of Covid, people lacking large group interaction, and our teams on field performance not being the highlight of the day, it makes sense. I just hope it naturally regresses to the norm, before the town, the police or the university are forced to do something dramatic to curb it.

Don't worry if they keep Fuente much longer they won't have to worry about fans in attendance or anywhere near the stadium

Go for it

But the drinking might get worse.

I think the bigger problem is that they'll just stay at the tailgate and not even go to the game. When the team is winning fans want to be in the stands yelling and screaming and feeling like they helped contribute to the victory. When the team's losing it's probably more fun to just hang out at the tailgate and keep drinking and fooling around.

That was running through my mind as well.

So...um...only one of the three residents lives even close to Center St. The other two live on the opposite side of South Main St (think old middle school).

Edit: Was off a bit on one of these. Those street suffixes will get after ya. Two definitely hear things, may have people walk through their yard, and possibly see things from those walking through their yard. But they're not in the thick of Center St was my point. I remember when I was at EOD school in Destin people complaining that the windows on their brand new multi-million dollar houses who shake and occasionally shatter. Maybe you should not have build your McMansion next to a bombing range that has been their since WWII? Crazy thought I know...

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
“I served in the United States Navy"

Interesting anecdote.

I live in Destin (well, in nearby Niceville), and my wife was stationed at Eglin, so I see both sides of that one. Many of the people living in that community are either active duty families or retired military. Similarly to a college town, most people have some relationship to the base and are pretty amenable to the situation.

There are jets flying, and bombs dropping. Cool. But sometimes there are things that can be done to help with the quality of life, like F-35s taking off over the middle of the bay instead of over people's houses, or limiting the night bombing to specific weeks. Or the base paying for soundproof windows for the local schools. Edit: These are measures that have been taken as a result of local concerns, and have been successful.

So, sure, tailgating for football games comes with the territory, and should be expected. At the same time, it's not unreasonable to ask folks not to trespass in your yard to pee on your fence, or leave a pile of beer cans in your yard.

Most people on both sides should understand the compromise here.

Or the base paying for soundproof windows for the local schools.

Or sound reduction (at the least).

I understand that we're all kinda annoyed at what we perceive to be the karens complaining about totally predictable issues. having said that, university enrollment grew almost 20% from 2006-7 academic year to 2017-18 (most recent i could easily find data for). We know it's been President Sands's intent to grow the university even more and we are 4 years removed from that most recent data point.

All that to say: while student behavior has always been rowdy, and center street especially has always been rowdy, there is likely a direct correlation between the "rowdiness" of the students and the sheer amount of students. Not just for tailgating at center st, but also for the issues that have been seen in student section at Lane, and so on. Not only has ~half the student body turned over without having learned the traditions and how to "do it well", but there's just plain more of them to go around now than there were previously.

yes, i'm not saying that one negates the other. just that a bunch of people on here who graduated years ago are talking about how it's always been rowdy and how some lady's complaints are invalid because she's been living since 2007 and is just now complaining blah blah blah seem to be missing the fact that there probably has indeed been a pretty significant shift in what the environment is like due to a confluence of other factors.

And I get what you're saying, but Center St is a different animal. They've had bands at tailgates on multiple occasions. So, while there is no doubt some truth to this, it's still ridiculous that it took 14 years for her to start raising a stink about it.

If you play it, they will win.

"How the ass pocket will be used, I do not know. Alls I know is, the ass pocket will be used." -The BoD

maybe it was tolerable for 12 years, chilled out for a covid year with very limited in-person football attendance, and when it came back it was with a vengeance and just simply unbearable. gradual changes are less noticeable than sudden ones, and going from a covid year to this was probably jarring (not to mention that especially with the housing market as it is, i'd probably sell my Miller's Addition house for a bajllion dollars if the tailgate noise and crowds were bothering me too)

2016 center st (last time i was there) was a lot rowdier than 2011 center st (when i first got to tech). maybe i'm wrong and it's not any rowdier now than it was then. But given year over year enrollment growth, i'd be really surprised.

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

I'll meet you in the middle a bit on this one. But, as I said, they routinely have bands at tailgates in that area. So, I am confident in saying the noise concerns in particular are dubious at best.

If you play it, they will win.

At the same time, moving into a notorious party spot for students during a time when it was already known it had this reputation makes it more than a little disingenuous when you start clutching pearls toward the town council over student behavior.

I get that the school grew, but that doesn't excuse the NIMBY crap from someone who knowingly moved into that situation and then doesn't like it when that situation continued for 10+ years.

This is my school

I get that the school grew, but that doesn't excuse the NIMBY crap from someone who knowingly moved into that situation and then doesn't like it when that situation continued escalated for 10+ years.

I agree that the situation is entirely predictable (particularly with Sands and his stated university goals) and actually fairly preventable (don't move near the party spot), but it's not exactly so cut-and-dried or even "disingenuous" to complain about the situation if she now finds that her threshold for what's acceptable has been exceeded. Tolerance levels change and situations change, maybe this was a combination of both.

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Sounds like the concern is that in the past, Center St stayed on Center St, and now, it's not really staying there. With 20% increase in students (That's almost 15,000 more students), I can see it being an issue.

Good point.

They could just have a small, quiet event at the library. In fact, they already have that, and she's invited.

Yeah, I have no sympathy for these people. It's a university that hosts large football games. They knew what they were getting into. I feel like at times the residents and governance of the Town are so out of touch with the University that it's unbelievable. You don't want to deal with college students? Don't live in a college town that frankly wouldn't exist if it weren't for the university.

This is equivalent to the guy who buys a house on a golf course and then gets mad if a ball comes flying into the yard.

Is coronavirus over yet?

Had that happen to me a few weeks ago actually - I don't play much but got invited to play in a tournament for work. Shanked a fairway shot pretty bad on a dogleg and it nailed the side of a house. Lady came out on her deck and started yelling and then taking videos of my group as we were passing by.. Like, I'm sorry I nailed your house, but at the same time, maybe don't live 20 yds off a fairway if you're going to be pissy about it.

I was trying to cut the corner on a short dogleg right par 4 one time (i could get near the fringe of the green cutting that corner)... And when I hit it I actually sliced it a little hard and it hit the guy's house that was in the corner of that dogleg.

The worst part? The guy who owned the house was standing on the tee-box with me as he was in our group. Oops.

Is coronavirus over yet?

You mean the saying isn't "Public urination wins championships"?

It's Time to go to Work

Y'all are just all soft, that's why we're at where we're at now. You don't want stupid prizes don't play stupid games. That's like moving to the beach then complaining it's too close to the ocean. Move away, nobody is making anyone stay in Blacksburg there are tons of other places to live, and if they're soft complainers about everything, might as well move to California with the rest of them

Go for it

Alum here and local so I can speak a little to this. There has been a lot of recent press (complaints) locally from Bburg residents about the atmosphere in Bburg. Restaurants have been destroyed, walking downtown in the middle of the week and seeing urinating on buildings, vomit everywhere, etc. people sitting on the curb on Main Street at night drunk with legs out in the street, gneral rudeness and vandalism, etc. Yes, this is a college town but it is a different atmosphere than when I attended. With Sands increasing enrollment, lack of activities during Covid, reduced or even same labor forces/staff like police but with more students, already hard hit businesses trying to survive, I think you have a setup for really high tensions with the town. Adding that many students to the population without infrastructure can lead to the next level of crazy in a small town. We all read about the problems with the students at the home games this year (although, my observations are that they are as much 40 year olds as 18 year olds). I think when businesses start being trashed and you can't walk downtown without seeing or smelling bodily functions on the regular, there may be a problem that needs addressing.

And just in case you are oblivious to Center Street, here is one PG video: linky

Here are some recent post from my 5 min of searching. I think the issue is not focused just to this particular area but to the town as a whole. Just my 2 cents...

😳😬🤣😅 Especially liked the comment section where one viewer was like "disgusting" and then Nadia responded "Disgustingly awesome!" & "Be sure to share it with all your friends and family! Thanks!"

I'm not saying you have to agree or disagree, but it's worth understanding what they're talking about.

I'll just attend the Center Street tailgate.

I posted the one youtube link that was semi PG but if you go search on youtube "Center Street Virginia Tech" you will find other recent videos that are also informative (note, NSFW). Was a bit embarrassed to link them directly here because I don't want to tarnish my alma mater with bad press.

I think the equilibrium has experienced a temporal disturbance in the town of Bburg.

Edited to add: Get off my lawn.

Man, we threw done on Center St in the '96 football season, but nothing like this!

I know where 19yo me would have been on gamedays... [checks memory]... 19yo me WAS there on gameday. Albeit it was nowhere near the size of what I saw in those videos.... so a couple points I would make:

1) I would absolutely not want to be a homeowner or landlord in that area. WAY too much liability as a landlord, and WAY too much to worry about as a homeowner.

2) that said, if I were a property owner I would be looking at ways to coral and monetize on the situation rather than just complain about it. Current zoning issues might preclude that, but again I would be looking at ways to make change... Given the current complaints I would like to think that the zoning council would be willing to listen to investors willing to buy large chunks of property with the intent on a tear-down / rebuild. Instead of more housing I would turn this in to a community grounds properly setup with restroom facilities, a "stage" area for performances, and either ample parking for food trucks or permanent restaurant establishments (or both).

Having now watched that video, it looks like its a little wilder than it was back in my day....BUT...it is off campus. What can VT do? Sounds like more of a Blacksburg PD / Town Council responsibility

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Exactly. This isn't a tailgate party either - this is a field party that is just much much closer to housing than normal.

Thanks for sharing - I don't know who Nadia Dawson is, but they did a great job with that mini-doc there.

With Sands increasing enrollment

Last several years I've visited, VT and town felt crowded. Blacksburg isn't a city and the town, along with VT, has limited resources / infrastructure for continuing to add more and more people to the equation. When does Sands get some of the blame?

Edit: Looks like full student population is over 37,000. In 2015 it was 30,000.

considering I've heard he wants the student body to eventually reach 40K, he should get more than some of it

MV7, MV5, LT3, Braxton Burmeister, Ryan Willis, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

It's been a conscious expansion. Not just with Sands, but with the Board of Visitors.

I've never been a huge fan of it, but I guess it does bring in more dollars for athletics.

I think my Freshman year at Tech in '95 undergrad was something like 19-20k with grad students at 5k, so yeah that is quite the increase in the last 25 yrs.

However I would not know how crowded it is now since I have not been back to campus since 2007, on a certain rainy Thursday for a game that was great until the end. Fuck Matt Ryan.

My recollection was that it was something like 23,000 in the early 90s when I was there. Can't remember if that was undergards or all students, but further evidence of a large increase.

Last couple of times I was in Blacksburg it definitely did not have the small town feel that I was used to. Harrisonburg is the same way. We go camping up at Natural Chimneys so go through there on the way. Not sure if that is because JMU got a lot bigger too or just the town. Find myself really preferring Bridgewater as it still has the good small town feel. Not-so-secretly hoping that my daughter decides she wants to go to Bridgewater College so we can move to the area.

And with that population shift comes added professors, added staff, added construction, added traffic, etc. top that off with things opening up now with covid protocols relaxing and I can see why town residents are getting frustrated. Yes, you live in a college town, you deal with college students. And for the most part, every townie I know loves it. We appreciate the students. We appreciate that they create jobs. But, I think there needs to be some balance. I'm not suggesting Weaver's Hokie respect should return. We need each other in Bburg.

The bars have all gotten noticeably way more packed on football weekends just in the last 5 years or so. I was a senior in 2014 and they would be crowded on football weekends for sure but it's been completely different in more recent years where you just straight up can't even get in Hokie House, Sharkeys, or Rivermill unless you go ridiculously early and post up for the entire night.

and you can't walk downtown without seeing or smelling bodily functions on the regular

Blacksburg is just trying to go for that big city vibe.

FIFY

I see where she's coming from.

But there used to be a guy a few doors down from me who owned a modified black Mustang, and he loved nothing more than to peel out of the parking lot between 12 and 6am every weekend morning. I've heard many a loud motor in my day, but this thing was on another level. It sounded like a monster from a horror movie, and my half-awake brain often thought it was at first. If I was not awake at peelout time, I soon would be. I employed 2 white noise machines simultaneously in self defense, and they did not work.

I did not put sugar in his gas tank, though I often wanted to. I didn't even leave a full jar of sugar in front of his door with an attached post it note reading MUFFLE IT, though I often wanted to do this also.

My point is, sure it can feel good to stir things up, poke a hornet's nest, what have you. But often, by doing what you want to do, you just make things worse. I doubt complaining about this is going to help anything.

You must have been there when I was. Mustang Guy was a hot topic of conversation for a few years. I was on Green St. and a lot of my friends lived on Houston right across from Mustang Guy and his mom. Crazy that he was such a fixture for being such a persistent annoyance.

Would you like Prys with that?

I didn't even think about it from this angle....watch it be the biggest its ever been this weekend. The Center St partiers have been challenged. Let's see how they respond.

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Hey Karen, you like apples, how about these "GTFO" apples?

are those like....non gmo apples?

If these Karens want to sell their house and get away from all of these terrible tailgate parties, I'll gladly take one of their homes off of their hands quickly and for cheap.

house..cheap..these days

Hey I agree with you, but if this mega partying is so awful, clearly her house ain't worth shit. I'll just point to the article as evidence about how awful it is to be there.

It's probably all rainbows and unicorns except on game day.

Paging The Law, there might be a house up for sale!

LOL. My first shout out on TKP. Yay!

Yes, this whole situation is so silly... these residents are certainly within their rights to request that things don't go full on criminal but to bitch and moan about 7 days each year that you knew was part of the deal when you bought is just lame.

THIS!!

Go for it

It's a lot more than just 7 days a year. It gets ramped up for tailgates, but they are setting up all the time on Center St.

@BuryHokie #ThanksFrank

I expect the police are more responsive when it is not game day, and things are less wild. Something to do with logistics. I literally could not get much more crowded or loud than it was on Saturday.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

"Omg kids are drinking ALCOHOL? UNDERAGE??" 😱

Like don't be an asshole and litter/piss in people's yards when you're tailgating. But the rest of this article is just a bunch of pearl clutching.

New policy starting in Blacksburg. No cheering or noise at football games, no cannon getting fired off, no tailgating, no fans. Let's just go back to Covid year I'm sure they loved it last year while they were in their bubble at their house doing nothing the whole time
