The Hokies and their media partner, Learfield IMG College, will announce the move next week prior to Tech's April 16 spring game, sources said. Roth and former Hokies receiver Eddie Royal are calling the spring game for ACC Network.

Roth and Eddie Royal calling the spring game, love it.
Really enjoyed Bill and Eddie calling the MTSU game last year. Eddie has also been fantastic on ACCN, he was great on the pregame show for the VT-ND game.
I love Eddie and I think he's got a very bright future in broadcasting, however he will need to be much less biased with his analysis as he continues to grow and evolve (not that I don't appreciate his love for VT).
I particularly remember ER being a homer but openly acknowledging it and at the same time questioning the coaching approach, which in hindsight was a pretty good call.
I think bias in commentating or or a commentator rooting for a team is much more palatable when 1. They have an obvious connection and 2. They can recognize when things don't go according to those biases (I think herbie and Howard do a pretty good job and I'd put Eddie in that camp with my limited exposure).
The worst is blind homerism that has no merit.
I listen on the VT app on my iPhone now. Looking forward to it
I never realised how much I took him for granted I loved him and Laze both but man do I miss Roth sometimes. This will make the games I miss and listen to on the radio that much better.

He's focusing on his mental health foundation now. I don't know if he's permanently done with broadcasting, but he is fully out of the picture at this time as he devotes his energy elsewhere.
Plus he's moved back to Richmond.
Now if Pry can just figure out how to get our old Lane Stadium announcer back I'd be really impressed
He's calling games for the Salem Red Sox now. Recognized it last spring at a game immediately. Just a short drive up to snag him back. I was perplexed why he was let go. His voice is iconic to me.

You know, I had forgotten all about this. This is just good all around.
There is a part of me that wishes we did give a new person a shot. Maybe one of Roth's students. Somebody that will be here for the long haul.
Then again Roth is back baby.
I think the most likely thing is the next hire is like the Laaser hire, pulling an experienced person from a different school or team. Not that a young broadcaster can't be good, but for the profile level of the position, you want someone who is well experienced to be the one on the mic.

I used to have a small rug that looked like the VT football field. Yard lines and logo in the middle. Every time I walked across it I thought Touchdown Tech. Even said it out loud once in a while.
