Public RV Lot Tailgating Questions

I'm planning to take our travel trailer to the BC game for the first time and I'm hoping to get some intel from people that have done it before. Our plan is to arrive by 5PM Friday and park in the Duck Pond lot (next to lot 18) when it opens. Is there a mad rush when the lot opens to get a spot? Do people arrive early and line up (not that there's really space to line up there)? Also, how does parking work? Looking at the satellite view of the lot, it looks like you would park across several spaces to fit RVs.

My biggest concern is making sure we get a spot. Otherwise we're pretty screwed!

Thanks.

Hey there - we have taken an RV up there a couple of times for big games - last one being ND in 2018 so take this with a grain of salt. We did take a larger RV and we did park in the Duck pond lot. We got there around noon on Friday and it was still a pretty empty lot, with only a few larger RV's having gotten there before us. There are parking folks there waiting to direct you and take your payment when you enter. There were RV's coming in throughout the rest of the day and evening and there were still some spaces early Saturday morning. I was concerned too about getting a spot which is why we got there at noon the day before. The biggest advantage is just being able to pretty much pick the best spot and chill out as everyone else follows you. I wouldn't expect a "line out the door" for any game this season. If you arrive early and there's no one there from parking services, just park in a sensible spot and they will be around in the evening to collect your payment. It's a pretty simple process. Enjoy!

Thanks. There is some conflicting information on the Hokiesports website vs. the VT parking website. Hokiesports says the duck pond lot opens at 5, but VT parking says it opens at noon. I called the parking office and it seems that noon is correct. Although they told me that I needed to buy a pass in advance. That turned out to be only for the student overflow lot off of Prices Fork. So who knows what's correct.

I was originally planning on getting there at 4 or 4:30 based on the Hokiesports info. Looks like I'll have to try and leave earlier than originally planned.

The 'Airport RV Lot' is not listed on the campus maps anymore. It is out on Smoot Drive if you are looking at Google Maps. There's typically spots available there just about every weekend for RVs. That's where we've been going for the past 10+ years.

With the airport expansion is has changed the walk to campus (It is now a bit longer along Huckleberry trail) or they do have a gameday shuttle that goes to/from that lot as well.

How big is your travel trailer?

I told him Iā€™d crawl on my hands and knees to be the DL coach at Virginia Tech. Now, all of a sudden, Iā€™m sitting in this chair and I told him Iā€™d still crawl on my hands and knees to work here. I just want to be here.

I'd prefer to tailgate in the Duck Pond lot because I have friends in lot 18.

If the Duck Pond lot is full, can I pay day of arrival (Friday) and park in the airport lot?

My trailer is small, 24' from bumper to hitch.

Yeah - you should be okay this season on "Day Of" for Airport RV lot. Sometimes he puts 'overflow' in the gravel lot just behind the bus stop out by the Airport RV lot and tries to fill up w/ cars. Some of this is all guess work since we don't have a good sense of how crowded things will be overall.

I've got a 24/25 foot hybrid and I've never really had a problem. But we now have about 5-7 RVs that set up a compound in the Airport lot. I keep wanting to make it down to Lot 18 and tailgate w/ the TKP crew but then I get rolling w/ our tailgate (pancakes & beer will get after ya') and never make it over to the other side of campus.

I hear that. When we camp, we have the Blackstone out bright and early for all the breakfast awesomeness. CMy crazy kids don't really like pancakes, so we're partial to french toast, eggs, bacon, sausage, and the occasional hash browns.

Ron, is that you?

I just upgraded from the blue Coleman roadtrip to a 2 burner camp chef w/ full griddle. I'm looking forward to having a decent sized cooking surface

Great thread! Does anyone know if you can just park your car and tailgate in the Public/RV lot next to Lot 18 at the Duck Pond? I've heard people say you definitely can do this at the Airport RV lot but not sure about the one near the Duck Pond. Was going to park at the Airport lot but since they put in the runway extension, Beamer Way is now cut in half and you can't get to CRC that way anymore. Looks like a bit of a hike now. Got a significant crew of people coming for the WVU game and would ideally like to all park together at a decent spot.

I think so but, the fee is $75.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Hmm, that may not be a bad deal all in all. Didn't get an on campus parking pass this year and they are pretty steep on StubHub currently. Will have several cars coming. Another alternative I've done before is the Lions Club lot behind Stadium Woods, but it's also $75 for reserved spots (not sure about day of). Also can get pretty tight in there and usually not enough porta John's for the crowd in there. Really enjoy the Duck Pond area for tailgating so may just do that.

Also Egbert - looking forward to checking out the Brewing Station soon! Had a buddy stop by the other day and said it was excellent. Can't wait to drop by.

For reference - I think Airport Parking was $25 a vehicle last year.
