DT Mario Kendricks and DE Pheldarius Payne will both return next year. Update: Also Pollard, but not Beck (on scholarship)

The full chain from bitter:

DT Mario Kendricks and DE Pheldarius Payne will both return next year.

Tech is hopeful DT Norell Pollard will be back too, though that's not finalized yet.

WR Cole Beck will run track in the spring and see how things go. If he comes back for football next season, it won't be on scholarship. (There are NIL options for him, however.) #Hokies

Glad to get some trench men back. Hopefully Pollard will return as well. Much needed for developing the younger guys.

That update on Beck's scholly status is good too with our recent additions. The numbers always work.

Bitter has Payne as a DE, last I checked HokieSports had him at LB

Bitter's correct here.

Glad you've got Bitter's back.

I'm a Bitter backer.

Wait, Bitter's back? As a Bitter backer?

Proud Hokie since 2004.

However, Payne is not a linebacker.

I was pretty sure he was a DE, the HokieSports LB tag confused the hell out of me

Excited to read your recruiting round up and big fan of your off-season content

In a slightly related tangent, if you are looking for a nice after-work beverage, I recommend the Picon Beer. A little bit of orange bitters in the bottom of a glass topped with a beer. I fell in love with them visiting the Alsace region of France for work. Not quite the same here as it is chilling in the café after work, but still nice.

Works great with with a Devil's Backbone Vienna Lager or something similar.

Alsace is a special place. Used to go to Basel for work and then stay an extra day or two and make the short drive from the airport. Since have moved to a different company but definitely need to go back.

This is because the French still have not figured out how to brew a decent beer.

I am not sure what to do with my hands now

There are a lot of good beers from the French speaking areas of Belgium.... Oud bruins and Saisons are tasty.

The key there is Belgium

Found the German

Belgium is the best brewing country in the world. People think Germany because of Oktoberfest, but the Belgians make the best beers and a wider variety than Germany.

I was trying to make a joke about Germany always going though Belgium to fight France.

I do love me some Belgian Trappist Ale

One might say Germany's army was always stout and would hops over Belgium to pils-age and plunder France.

German beer is bland and unvaried. Belgian beer is the opposite. I used to live in Lake Mary, Florida, home to Buster's Belgian Bistro. It became our go-to. I miss that place so much.

Czechs make the beer Germans wish they could.

Have you had a biere de garde before? They are very tasty.

Sounds like you found a corked one, not a good one.

Him being listed as a LB always seemed like a mistake. 6'3 260 is way too big to be an off-ball LB in today's game unless you're an absolute athletic freak like Noah Sewell (Who is actually down to a 6-2, 253lb weight now).

The only justification heading into the year for calling him a LB would be if we were treating him like a 3-4 JACK LB, but when it actually played out on the field, our WILL LB's (Tisdale, Keller, Lawson, McDonald) all looked like typical sized off-ball LB's and nothing close to Payne's size profile.

If he speaks in 3rd person when he sacks the QB, he should very subtly add a "t" to his name:

YOU JUST PHEL(t)-DARIUS's PAYNE!

Why am I getting excited about this defense?

because we're far enough removed from the pain that was the 2022 season that you are starting to hope again.

Probably because it's been more than 4hrs since it was posted and i'm still excited! Should I be calling a Doctor?

No comments about Beck here, so I'll start:

Tough to see him off scholarship because there were such high hopes coming into last season. That said, it looks like the coaching staff had a tough discussion with him and made room for bringing in the right guys. Sucks for Beck, but gives me some more confidence that this staff is going to make changes and not shy away from tough roster management discussions.

Can we take the bets on over under timeline for his complaints?

Gobble Gobble would probably nail it lol.

Nah given that DC acknowledged the update to Beck's scholly status, I don't think we'll be seeing any more comments from him about it moving fwd (not unless he has any drunk brothers)

Beck is in what year? His scholarships should have paid for at least a BS by now if not at least part way through a Masters program. Besides, he might be able to pick up another track scholarship.

Good move.

Personally I'm glad to see he won't be taking up a football scholarship and am assuming he'll now be on a track scholarship instead. I admire his dedication to come back to us for last season, but I'd rather see that scholarship go to someone who will grow and develop with the team over 4 or 5 years.

Remember, he was one of the names on the NIL list. Even if he doesn't pick up a track scholarship, he'll get some NIL money to offset or fully pay for a year's tuition.

Interesting. So this basically allows the big money teams to have quasi scholarships that go over the technical limits with this system?

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Jet Sweep

Definitely. Son, you aren't going to be on scholarship here your freshman year, but this here NIL offer will fully cover those expenses anyway.

Basically the limit is now 105.

Based on appearance and circumstances, that should be considered pay-for-play. It would be a bold maneuver that I'm not sure any coach would go there yet. But, with Jimbo Fisher, Deion Sanders, and the like, I surely wouldn't put it past some coach to eventually try and game the system that way.

And, of course, NIL deals are private. It's also possible that NIL deals can come with NDA language (i.e., not allowed to speak publicly on the deal), so I could see it actually being done and impossible for the NCAA to regulate.

If highly ranked players start taking walk-on positions with major schools, then that's the signal that this is definitely happening.

🦃 🦃 🦃

and I'm 100% fine with that. If the NIL loopholes allow it then we need to exploit it.

The only problem is the next step could be deliberately undermining title IX. Give out less scholarships through the school because the money is funneling through the NIL. Then you can correspondingly reduce the number of women's sports scholarships.

Wait what? Why is anyone deliberately reducing women scholarships??

Who is the super villain that is like "yes, now's my chance. Women should never be playing sports...muhahahaha"?

Who is the super villain that is like "yes, now's my chance. Women should never be playing sports...muhahahaha"?

I think it's more "here's my excuse to not spend so much in scholarships."

Still bad, but not supervillain bad.

I think it's more likely that a team will use this have more than 85 "scholarship" athletes on the football team than it is that they'll use less than 85 scholarships on the football team.

I can see financially affluent schools doing that, but smaller schools can't match it.

Okay scholarships athletes, you each get 10k in bonus NIL money, but the walkons are getting $60K to cover tuition, room, board, and their 10k. So you are all getting the same lineman money.

That was my thought.

Who's going to be the MVP and edit the post title to indicate Pollard is coming back? Also, that's great to see!
