and that rounds out the coaching staff! love to see it. Strong VA connections, emphasis on recruiting, lots of experience at various levels, and not too many "take a flier on this guy" guys

Montell Jordan???

Seems like another solid hire. Staff complete, and we are ready to begin the Pry era.

Very exciting times and welcome to Blacksburg, Fontel!

this is funny, but he's referring to the likeness to the man in the GIF, not between the coaches themselves

Can anyone tell me whether I'm happy about this or not?

I have the same question? Who? Can someone please give some background info for those of us that have no idea.

Current ODU TE coach. UVA grad, from Richmond with strong connections in the 804.

Was the TE coach at ODU before coming to the mountains.

Played TE at ODU (edit: UVA) and for three years in the NFL with the Bears organization (no stats).
Coached WRs and TEs at the FCS and DII levels for several years before going to ECU and then ODU.

Super excited to see another Hermitage alum at VT!

Fontel played high school ball with Duane Brown too, those were some nasty teams we had during the early aughts. Just could never get over the hump with those teams in the playoffs. Pretty sure I remember Macho Harris ending one playoff run, as he just ran buckwild over a really good Hermitage defense.

Just another promise that Pry has worked on backing: we're going to keep the Virignia kids home. Mines is another addition that, as a whole, is going to make any school have to work its ass off trying to pluck a kid out of Virginia.

My guess is that maybe he wasn't our first choice, and some handshake agreement fell through. But, if it is a "fallback", I feel like we could have done much worse.

You make a good point. We have not done a good job of recruiting kids from

In to remind everyone that BigGameBoomer just makes lists that have 0 factual basis. They're just opinion graphics to drive interactions.

(add if applicable) /s

Truth

I'm still figuring this out.

Well yeah, Holt, Mines, and Nosal would be top 3 if they used facts.

Interesting, not sure how this list was formulated but a couple of interesting points...

1. VT now would have both the #19 Mines and #20 Stu Holt on this list, so our TE play should be Outstanding in 2022.

2. VT Alumnus Greg Nosal makes top 50 @ #34.

3. Same Twitter has top 50 for most Assistant Groups....I know this may come as a shock, but other than Shibest (ST) no one from the Fuente Coaching Staff cracked a Top 50.

And Bowen is a big TE guy as well. I'm hoping they become a focal point of our offensive scheme. When you have versatile TEs who can play tight on the line and block as well as flex out wide and catch, it makes it really difficult for defenses to get a good personnel matchup. Calling an audible and going from a tight formation to a spread look or vice versa with the same personnel really makes it hard on the other side.

Formulated by whatever fan base big game boomer wants to piss off to drive Twitter metrics

Yupp he'll piss off a fanbase then pander to that fanbase with a nearly contradicting graphic a week later. I covered this in another thread. Absolutely ingenious marketing but really sad how well it works.

Isn't Bowen coaching TEs, though?

Noticed Greg Nosal's name on that graphic too.

Meh, the hire kind of reminds me of Zohn Burden, at least he played TE in the league tho. We'll wait and see I guess

I had a similar thought when I first heard, but I'm more encouraged about his coaching track record where everything I always heard about Burden was recruiting, recruiting, recruiting.

Imo this is meh as well. Espically with the new money budget the coaching staff has. It could work out(I hope it does) but I see Mines and Holt as they have 2 years to see what they have and if it aint good it's on to new coaches.

This is one we need to knock out of the park for the next couple seasons tho imo. Jafar Williams did an absolutely terrible job of developing our receivers. He may have been a decent recruiter but he did far more damage than good to that room

Jafar wasn't even a decent recruiter.

2 years to see what they have and if it aint good it's on to new coaches.

I think this will be another point to judge Pry on versus our previous HC. Will he be able to move on from coaches who are not making the cut? At least these guys are not his best bud and the best man in his wedding.

I'm hoping we don't have to fire staff because of poor performance but rather we have to replace staff because they are being hired away for higher level positions.

I mean yea that G5 WR coach hire from Memphis didn't work out either did it. Jesus are y'all happy about anything. Not the first practice or game in the book yet.

yeah typically I'm more skeptical as well but with the lack of recruiting the past few years I'm hype to have this guy in charge of offensive recruiting.

Huh? We just had two G5 "Virginia recruiter" hires at WR and neither worked out, the last one was terrible.

I never came close to saying Mines won't work out. I think playing in the league will be a big asset for him. But the bottom line is we not only need a solid receivers coach but one that can reverse the damage to the current group done by Jafar Williams and Corn

Holman Wiggins a coach who had 3 G5 years of WR experience who now coaches at the very top of college football, remember him.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Yeah doesn't mean every G5 position coach is going to be good lmao. His receivers at Memphis were much more successful than Mines or Burden's, or Jafar's running backs (lol)

I'm with you here Fireman. A lot of people were getting really hyped about it possibly being Brown from Cincy or Washington from Coastal. And those guys have just as much P5 experience as Mines, which is none so far. I'm all for it and like we have someone with ties to Richmond and seems to be a pretty good coach.

Wiggins had never been a P5 coach and Moorehead, who was brief but has been successful since Blacksburg, had never been a coach before I think? No clue how this hire shakes out, but I think WR is one of the spots you can make a hire like this and see how the cards play out in a year or two.

Burden just got hired at Duke, from Maryland. So some people think Burden isn't a bad coach.

For the record, Burden was sooo many coaches ago I don't remember how well he did here.

Believe burdens issue was throwing out offers all over the place that might not have had the blessing of the entire coaching staff?

Also wasn't he a WR coach at ODU that we used at RB coach under Beamer before moving back to WR? Seems like he never got traction here, and then the recruiting stuff happened.

And if I remember correctly, isn't he the primary or secondary recruiter for 3 or 4 of the current running backs? Doesn't really matter anymore but you also have to put coaches in a position to succeed.

I think Burden came here at WR for a year, then we moved him to RB when we brought on Wiggins, then he left.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

As far as anyone has every shown me this is rumor. And why are we believing anything that came from one of the worst recruiting HCs any of us have ever seen?

Burden was WR coach in 2015, then RB coach from 2016-2019. He has been primarily a WR coach at his other stops, so perhaps his on field talents lie there. (?)

Man, Burden gets no respect. He is a good WR coach and WR production and fundamentals were MUCH better when he was coach.

On the tail end of Aaron Moorehead with Bucky Isaiah and Cam yeah. He was only receivers coach for one year though, most of the development our receivers have seen was from Moorehead and Wiggins

incorrect. WRs regressed with Wiggins. We would have been better off had Burden stayed at WRs and Wiggins at RB

This is revisionist history. Ford and Phillips most certainly did not regress. Wiggins developed Tre for two years, and Kumah, Hezekiah, Savoy, Keene. Who did Burden develop, Ford and Phillips were stars since their true freshman year.

Blocking may have been better with Burden but you'd need a French style of each season breakdown to prove that.

Wiggins' last year was 2018, Turner's first year was 2018, so Wiggins didn't develop Turner for 2 years. Keene was a TE - not sure why Wiggins would have coached him? Funny you mention Savoy - he played receiver 2 years under Wiggins and did regress - he had 454 receiving yards his freshman year, then 188 his sophomore year. Grimsley did improve from 2017 to 2018 though.

Regardless, arguing over who of our previous coaches sucked more I'm not sure adds a lot of value. Mines appears to have coached a number of guys to all-conference status (ODU sure was effing quick to take down his profile that had more details).

Idk why I've always thought of Turner as 2017. But Keene split out wide plenty of times, obviously he was a tight end in name, but he was used like a receiver. I would assume he would've been coached by both groups

TE's aren't purely blockers, otherwise they'd be coached by the OL coach. By your logic, you wouldn't even need a TE coach, they would just go and split time between WR coach and OL coach, so I would assume they actually do not split time with the WR coach - the TE coach teaches them everything (I'd also think that if HCs and ADs could save money by not having a TE coach by splitting the TEs between OL, RB, and WR coaches, they'd do that).

"Give me a fu¢king beer", Anonymous Genius

Leg, he had some talented receivers at VMI, and now at UMD. I wouldn't be surprised to see him move up the ladder at Duke with Mike Elko.

Instead, he got pigeon holed at VT by Fuente. Fuente kept Burden on staff for recruiting, but wouldn't let him recruit. Burden decided to continue doing his job, which led to the separation. That's where we get the rumors about throwing out offers like candy.

Mind you, Wiggins has proven to be a far more superior WR coach, having now coached a Heisman winner, and winning a couple of natties.

I think he's already gotten several requests to remove that from his profile from fans lol

Yeah, that s*** has got to go!

Why? Its all about the message:
"Listen, I played football at UVA, it was fine. Now that I'm a coach, clearly Virginia Tech is the place I want to be. Learn from my experience, go to VT, not UVA"

I've said in past threads that I am all for having a wahoo on staff. I don't even think he needs to pitch it as "learn from my experience". No need to bash your alma mater. Just have a real conversation if you are talking to a kid who is debating between the two schools as to why Virginia Tech is a better spot for him.

I was being a bit hyperbolic. I see no issues with having a hoo on staff. I have hoo family members, friends, and colleagues.

My UVA alum friend and I were texting prior to the game, and he asked my prediction. I said "UVA should win this football game, which is exactly why VT will win". He actually agreed.

He forgot to remove the ODU link from his Twitter as well as of a minute ago.

As long as he does his thing and wins some battles, he can leave the UVA at in his profile. It'll be doubly hilarious when they disown him.

well, we gon learn about this whole "Wahoo selling the Hokies" thing, aren't we

Uh, where's the beard evaluation? I feel like you're falling down on the job. I mean, how are we supposed to evaluate the hire without that?

pfffffffft a Beard can't fall down without help, silly Doug

As for the above, it's a start. There's potential there.

Was it alcohol? Is that what helped with the beard falling down?

I saw another picture where his beard game seemed stronger - I feel like the lighting doesn't help it much in the official announcement picture. But dammit, this is important stuff! I know some people want P5 experience, some want recruiting chops, but an imposing beard has to help with recruiting, amiright?

I really wonder about that.

I don't think you could pay me enough money to be on UVA's staff and legitimately try to sell UVA over VT.

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

His decision was made after a phone call with longtime Virginia Tech assistant coach Bud Foster. All Foster told him was, "We win. They don't."

I guess this puts to rest all the speculation that the reason that the WR coach had not been hired was that he was still on the coaching staff of an active NFL playoff or big-time team in the college playoffs.

That being said, I like the ties to Virginia and (presumably) contacts with the high school coaches. Go HOKIES!

Fontel Mines anagrams to Moist Fennel. It also anagrams to Soft Linemen, which absolutely tf not

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Well he is a Hoo... I suggest we use he middle initial now that he coaches at Tech. Can't have this stinkeroo of anagram attached to our program.

I am not sure what to do with my hands now

As the recruiting coordinator for the Pirates, Mines helped compile the fourth-ranked recruiting class in the American Athletic Conference in 2020. Mines ranked No. 6 among all AAC coaches in 247Sports coach recruiting rankings in 2020 and 2021.

If you can recruit this well to ECU, you can probably help our recruiting. If a position coach can develop players at his position and punch above his weight in recruiting, it's a great hire. Hopefully he can. We certainly have a WR receiver that will allow us to see if he can develop pretty quickly. If they come out reading a defense, making sharp cuts, and running every route like they are getting the ball, with a willingness to block, we'll know he can teach, because I did not see that this year.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own
