I assume the plan is to tie together the football event with the typical 4/16 events in some manner.
What are your thoughts?

I like how Quinn posted this before Hokie Sports or any other account as far as I can tell
He deleted the tweet but I guess it's out now anyway.
This coincides with the spring family weekend and the 4/16 remembrances. I suspect they will use the game to drum up enthusiasm for the team with extra people already in town and will honor those lost on 4/16. If done well, this could be very effective for bringing the community together and rallying around the new staff and team.
It has always been on Spring Family weekend but I don't remember if they held it on the same weekend as the memorial events in the past.
It has
Doing a quick search, it looks like the Spring Game usually fell in the April 20-26th range until 2018 and 2019 when it fell on April 13/14. Obviously no Spring Games the last two years.
I agree with you, but it's SO easy to get it wrong and have the tone be that the university/athletics department is using the 15th anniversary of 4/16 as a tool to drum up support for the football team instead of using the football team to as a tool for remembrance.
In my mind, I understand why the decision is made to combine (as opposed to have spring game one week before/after), but I would not do that and instead would put the spring game on 4/23. Let the remembrance be the remembrance without there being the subtext of spring football.
Oh I agree completely. I think it's a delicate line to walk. I hope they do it well and use the experience of the game wisely and honorably.
I can see how my original comment might be a little simplistic. What I really mean is using the game as a focal point of what unites us, and that the experience can call back to our shared pain and our bright future. A smaller version of the 2007 ECU game, at which I wept during the tribute before kickoff. But the experience of that game felt amazing among all the Hokie faithful.
That was my first game ever in Lane stadium and I had a very similar experience. One of the most powerful Hokie moments I've experienced.
Sucks that it's also Easter weekend.
A resurrection of the Spring Game if you will
Y'all really need to go on a (L)egg hunt for this. It deserves more.
And on third week of April, Coach Pry gifted unto us, a football game. And it was good. And there was much rejoicing.
My thoughts. Harder for me to go then with out of town family coming for the weekend.
Yeah. I am bummed about that too. We will be at my parents' house anyway, but will miss out on some Easter-related things.. (Like dyeing 5 dozen eggs with Mini LancerHokie and my grandma and helping cook)
I just want to know if it will be on TV.
If it ain't televised, I guess we can bring out the pitchforks and #FirePry can begin in earnest!
/s.... Kind of, sort of.
You missed an opportunity here. It'll be #FryPry
If I am Whit, I also make sure Pry has one open scrimmage for students to attend for free but they have to provide an email to receive information about Hokie Club when they graduate, and another scrimmage only open to HokieClub members. Make people who are donating feel like they are getting some exclusive benefit like seeing the new plan before "the rest of the world" sees it at the spring game.
This is a great idea !
I give to you our future "Assistant Manager to the Assistant Director of Football Operations "French!
It is great idea, but I like Deputy Assistant Manager to the Deputy Assistant Director.
DAMDAD for short.
Charge $5 a person. It will be a nice off-season revenue boost and after the past six years, I don't see too many having an issue paying such a small fee.
We need to make it free for kids though. Make sure every kid has an opportunity to see the Hokies live.
Ehhhh I dunno about that. Charging $5 per person for the Spring Game on the 15th anniversary of that day seems a little slimy, even if the intentions are good.
Hence doing something earlier (a scrimmage) where you have to be a Hokie Club member to attend, then one for students only. The Hokie Clu concept would get a couple hundred extra subscribers at the minimum donation level, which would raise almost as much revenue as charging everyone $5 for the spring game (and you would have HC members, signed up for communications etc.)
Exclusivity is the key.
Agree here. The one-time influxes of cash are nice, but you can't build that into your bottom line and grow if you can't depend on that revenue stream. Getting new HC members signed up with a recurring donation is what makes the difference. That annual gift commitment is better than one-time donations.
Hasnt the spring game always been $5, I remember paying it while I was in college.
It's been free since I started going in 2011 through 2019
Did this same person who charged you the fin also volunteer to valet park your car? :)
No, i believe they donated the money to charities. I remember on year on of the female basketball players got meningitis so they gave the money for research for that.
The access to the new regime would be awesome. It should be a paid event, and a donation drive is in order. We need to get behind the new crew, they are kicking butt on the recruiting trail, and need our support. The have opened their doors to the fans, it is time to get behind them .
Instead of fundraising for the athletic department, maybe charge or ask for donations that support the multiple memorial scholarships that have been established in memory of those lost on 4/16. Seems a good way to tie the Spring game into the weekend and further build goodwill between the coaching staff and the university/fan base.
Make sure the Hokie Club or alumni event is on Friday so they stay for the weekend and attend the spring game. Students can easily go on Thursday.
So I'm thinking about pulling the RV up there with my son for the spring game, his first trip. Where is the best place to "camp" with an RV and able to walk to Lane? Does it exist?
Walking distance to the stadium options are really limited. You can try reaching out to:
Sounds like a Liberty party.
Just not for students. The people making six figures have different rules.
Thank you!
Park out at the Walmart in Cburg and enjoy a nice bike ride to and fro on the Huckleberry
/semi s
What I'm hearing for those who can bring a bike with them is to buy a bike at walmart, ride it to the game, and then ride it back and return it at the store. Got it
I can ride my bike on the Huckleberry Trail? Cool cool cool!
Man, you got that at Walmart? They have really upped their game!
