Dennis Dodd Thinks Pry's Seat is Hotter Than Elliot's

Dennis Dodd has Tony Elliot as "safe and secure" while having Pry as "all good...for now". Someone explain this other than by saying Dodd is a complete tool. Is this based on program expectations, or is Pry considered a riskier hire than Elliot?

I mean, I can see why this would be the case.

At VT we actually expect results.

At UVa? Well, 20 years of getting paddled by your bigger brother will take all desire for success away from you. As long as Tony kisses the right asses, he'll be fine.

Neither coach's seat should be hot, they haven't played a game yet. In general I wouldn't overanalyze these types of articles, they're typically low effort.

Are you trying to tell me that Dennis Dodd, who works at "please don't leave us, SEC" CBS Sports would be desperate enough to put out click bait articles in the current climate?

Dodd listed Dabo as untouchable. He isn't. There was a lot of noise about last years slow start for Clemson and his two best coaches just jumped ship. I am not sure they actually reload, I think Clemson is going to start sliding back to the middle of the pack as Clemson starts Clemsoning more often again.

yes i get the sense that dabo is going to be a clear cut case of the college football coaching equaivalent of "you either die the hero or live long enough to become the villain"

See Bowden, Bobby C.

I think Dabo is pretty untouchable. Excluding a scandle, he's sticking around for at least 3-5 years if can win 10+ games/year. And given his recent recruiting classes, and easy schedule, I don't see Clemson winning less than 10 games/year for a while.

Twitter me

Yeah I would definitely have pegged Dabo as being in the "all good... for now" category

I wouldn't have argued a "1" level, but an untouchable. Granted he opens against GT, the mighty Furman, the fearsome Louisiana Tech, before facing Wake... So they should be top 10 after starting 3-0 right?

They'll be Top 10 after starting at 0-0. 3-0 will have them jumping over someone like 3-0 UGA because...reasons?

it has to come down to expectations, and you also have to remember that the Pry hire was right on the heels of the fanbase turning on Fuente in a big way when the on-field product fizzled. UVA has lower expectations and a largely apathetic smattering of fans (can't even call em a true "fanbase", really). Bronco wasn't even run out of town, he slunk

Bronco was not run out of town; UVA made him question everything in his life, even his marriage.

"Clearly this week there was a sense of clarity. I needed to step back from college football & reassess my life as well as my wife as my partner..."

I'd say yeah there's a bit more pressure on Pry, but not too much more. Elliot can get 6-7 wins for 3 years at least, but if Pry isn't at 8 wins by year 3 I think there will be some pressure.

Agree with everything posted here. I don't have a problem with Dennis Dodd, but I bet he's a bit ignorant of the work Pry has put in on PR front this off season, which is understandable; Dodd is a national writer, he's not expected to know all the little things that Coach Pry has done since arriving at Tech.

I would expect a "national writer" to be able to do research, but that apparently is not a strong suit of many in the press these days.

Ut Prosim Ad Dei Gloriam

The game has changed. CBS is expecting him to get X clicks per week, which means he needs to publish an article every Y days, which means he doesn't have the time to be an expert on every team.

His job is to paint to a high level picture of the entire sport. And to be honest, he didn't have that hot of a take.

Twitter me

I tend to agree with this sentiment.

A lot of people think Elliott was key to Clemson's success as OC. In actuality they were pretty terrible in 2020 with a lot of talent, and were abysmal last year with a new cast with a 5* QB recruit. I think Elliott is extremely overrated. I don't know why Pry doesn't get the same credit after having put multiple top defenses on the field for PSU and a lot of guys in the NFL, including Micah Parsons. I guess offense is sexier?

Elliott won multiple Natty's, and Pry didn't. Pry has never been a household name. Tony Elliott was when he was at Clemson.

There's 2 ways to view the TE hire:

  1. He's only coached at Clemson, and place that has every advantage, so he likely won't be able to replicate that at another ACC school.
  2. He's spent his entire career at Clemson, has seen how a program can transform from average to elite, and can implement that blueprint at another ACC school

Personally, I've always been in camp #1. When Tony Elliott to VT rumors were picking up steam in 2020, I was somewhat disappointed that he was the next coach (fortunately, he wasn't), because I was not convinced that someone who spent their entire career at Dabo's Clemson could come to a school like VT.

I think we made the better hire than UVA, but time will tell.

Twitter me

I don't think Tony Elliott was a "household name" either. We knew who he was because of previous VT rumors, I don't think the average non-Clemson fan did.

Not to say he wasn't one of the most notable coordinators, I just also don't think many college coordinators are that well-known at all unless they're former head coaches like Bill OBrien.

I think TE was one of the 5 most known coordinators in the country, and probably a household name among fans of ACC or SEC schools.

How bout that?

Twitter me

maybe 5 most know coordinators that didn't use to be HCs.

Joe Moorehead, Josh Gattis, Brett Venables, Marcus Freeman, Jeff Grimes, Mark Whipple, Msnny Diaz, Alex Grinch, Rhett LaskeeMike Elko, Bill O'Brien are all hotter names from the media talking about them

Yeah I'm in the same boat. TE and Jeff Scott learned the system from Chad Morris (the true innovator and game changer for Clemson's offense) and just plugged and played top talent and kept the system going IMO. Jeff Scott has also so far been abysmal as an HC. I think we are going to see TE try to implement everything he did at Clemson and will quickly learn he's not going to have the same talent to mask flaws and mistakes.

In Jeff Scott's defense, he took one of hardest jobs in FBS. But yea, I agree.

Twitter me

I also am glad we went the route of a CEO, charismatic type HC. Pry obviously has huge defensive expertise but I think he also has the personality and fit for the job and understands his role well. I think I'm general people have gotten fatigued of the Xs and Os coordinator types at HC who have a set system, particularly on offense. We tried that route with Fuente and it obviously didn't pan out. But I think the era of the offensive guru system is fading.

I like the synergy we have on offense with Bowen, Rudolph, and Glenn. Bowen I'm sure like any OC will have his bread and butter and things he wants to accomplish, but I like the diversity of experience on his resume and the experiences that the other two bring to the table. Give me an OC who can be multiple, game plan for specific opponents week to week, and find ways to get good matchups over a particular "system."

It all comes down to expectations. The coaches seat at VT will always be hotter that uva's. VT expects to compete at the highest levels, uva only expects the team to show up and cavman to not fall off the horse.

I am not sure what to do with my hands now

I think you guys are reading too much into this. Dodd is a national writer. He knows Tony Elliott better then Brent Pry. He probably doesn't know the previous connection of Pry and VT. He very likely has no idea the amount of good faith effort Pry has put in to repair the relationship between the football program and the fans.
