We still owe OU for 2013. Here's our chance.

Whats our pitching situation?

Pain is Temporary, Chicks Dig Scars
Glory is Forever, Let's Go Hokies!!

I would assume Metz or Greene going for the Hokies.

Weyker probably first out of the pen. Firoved second. After that, I don't know.

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

OU probably going with Bennett from Friday.

Thnx, i hope greene has settled down.

This was the new profile pic within 5 seconds of seeing it live yesterday, what an absolute stud muffin ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ˜‚

I just wish he would relax and enjoy retirement a little

We put the K in Kwality

I'm super glad that Grandpa Frank got out of the coaching game when he did. I'm glad we can embrace him as a fanbase without any negative vibes for where the program is like the other recent head coach.

I found TKP after two rails from TOTS then walking back to my apartment and re-watching the 2012 Sugar Bowl. I woke up the next day with this username.

Hopefully the wind keeps up when the Hokies are batting

Yes,that's the Hokie Bird riding a camel. Why'd you ask?

Our starting pitching is a joke in this super regional

To be fair, the umps have made it difficult with an inconsistent strike zone. Makes you throw a lot more meat pitches.

Literally what happened on the second home run

Just keep (start?) hitting...

Well that was a less than ideal start.

Almost got the three up three down there in the second. Oh well. No runs is a good inning. Let's drop some hammers boys.

Boy howdy we look tight tight tight at the dish. Hopefully everyone gets the jitters out first time through the order. Lots of ABs left LFG

Hokies need to figure this pitcher out. Looking a little lost at the plate atm.

But this quick inning for Gleber was just what is needed to get back into it.

๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ

Geber has only made a couple of bad throws. Worry about the pitch count - these OU batters have done a good job extending at-bats. But he's been pretty good IMO

LOT of pitches and there's no tomorrow - hope Szefc makes a move here

Update: he did. Gotta minimize the damage here.

Oklahoma is blowing it open

4-2 and there's only 1 out

Our own pitching is absolutely killing us. Struggling badly to find strikes. Most pitches are either way out of the zone or softly in it.

Gotta be better on the mound to make a run this is a hard watch sometimes

5-2 going to the bottom. Could have been worse, but still a very poor showing so far by the pitching staff

This is my school

That throw home was on line and in time. Would have had the runner by 2 steps. Not sure why they cut two there.

Glad to get out of the inning but it would have been nice to save that 5th run.

We are GRINDING

You're the only ones that I can talk to about this, you guys.

Can't get any offense going. Gotta hope when they make a pitching sub we can handle who they have next in line

But then again they may never sub their pitcher when we can't even connect on any of his pitches or get on base through 5

5-2 heading to the 5th

Our bats are a combination of not patient enough and way too patient. When they aren't swinging at everything, they're watching strike 3

We're not working the pitcher anywhere near enough and not getting any good hits

We absolutely need to get the bats going in the bottom we can't go down 4 into the 6th

The short answer is no

Yeah, our pitching has been pretty lousy all weekend with the exception of Hurney being clutch yesterday.

Hosting Super Regional in both baseball and softball and only win one game combined would be a brutal pill to swallow after this season.

As an athletic department, we can't be happy with missed opportunities like that

This is my school
This is home

So in hindsight both teams have had great seasons. Does it stink to fall short at home yes but it's progress.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Yeah but sooner or later we are going to have to start coming through in these big moments and seizing the opportunity. It's across all sports too - how many big bowl games have we been to and came out flat, NCAA tournament appearances in basketball one and done, etc. I don't know if we psych ourselves out or what happens but it's almost like we just can't handle the moment.

Honestly I get it I really do but most of these programs are budding into life like baseball this is our best ever team and hopefully we keep growing. I may be forever hopeful but things are looking up and hopefully next year we will focus on pitching a bit more.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Both teams have had great seasons, but yeah softball and baseball losing in Super Regionals would be like men's and women's basketball being a one seed in their basketball tourney and losing in the sweet 16.

Hard not to say it's a disappointment if this game keeps going the way it appears to be.

Yes,that's the Hokie Bird riding a camel. Why'd you ask?

Hopefully they take that up with whoever our next coach is

2 hits through 4 is not ideal we need to make this a long inning

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

This university is cursed and there's no two ways around it. No other way to explain our sports teams always shitting the bed in the biggest moments

We aren't cursed, we just don't have a winning mentality. We are comfortable with being competitive. As long as you get a ranking and make a postseason tournament everything is gravy. There is no expectation for more here.

This is my school

We are too eager to become complacent. We experience a modicum of success and then get comfortable and take our foot off the gas. It's what happened to our football program and seems to almost be our mindset in all sports. Instead of ratcheting things up a notch in a championship scenario, we get there and kind of relax. We also don't tend to respond well to adversity when we get down or things start snowballing against us.

Zero discernible approach at the plate. This kid is flat-out owning us.

You're the only ones that I can talk to about this, you guys.

They got nuttin for Horton. Good pitching always beats good hitting. That's why I didn't think we could make any noise.. couldn't get 4 innings out of our "ace". BB SB BB and then there is FB

Calling on our third pitcher from the bull pen while Oklahoma hasn't even had to call on theirs. Wonder where we came up short in a must win game

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

I mean it's basically an exact replica of the softball meltdown. Pitching has been horrendous and we suddenly refuse to swing the bat at shit being handed down center plate.

Just embarrassing now

Yeah I'm going to enjoy the rest of the afternoon. We have mailed it in at this point.

As bad as the pitching has been, it's the bats that have been the most disappointing today.

Is coronavirus over yet?

The pitching (or lack thereof) is the devil we know.

Agree with both of your comments. Came back to type "well Tennessee losing is a nice cancellation prize"

We had a great season as one of the top 15 teams in the country after being picked to finish last in the Coastal. The favored team doesn't always win. That's sports.

There is no curse or athletics-wide reason we haven't won a title. There are hundreds of teams trying to win in a given DI sport each year, and only one can win a national championship. Is it unlikely that we wouldn't have one won in any sport at some point, sure, but it's possible. It doesn't mean we're cursed, or the entire athletics program has the wrong mentality. Any one of millions of actions gone differently could have resulting in us winning a championship. Enough with this woe is me, sky is falling bullsh*t in every thread. Be proud of the athletes for accomplishing what they did, and support them going forward as they try to win that first title. It'll be euphoria when they do.

We are one of two power five conference teams that have yet to win a national championship in anything.

This team is not responsible for that, but there is definite a curse in Blacksburg.

Show me a Natty not connected to bass fishing and you can convince me otherwise.

Love this team and I am proud of their season. They gave us a hell of a run.

There is no curse.

Over our entire athletic department's lifetime we've never prioritized winning a title. At any level with any sport. We are content with competing. We are content with being in the mix. There is no lingering frustration over missed opportunities, because we are just happy that we were there.

Until our expectations rise, this is as good as it will get. We might maybe luck into a title at some point, but it's unlikely. We'll never invest to the point where we make sure we eventually get there.

Comparing us to Kansas State is just self-indulgent act of cherry picking.

Almost a century ago they were charter members of the Big 6 Conference. We were still well under 2,000 enrollment and had just gone co-ed.

Half a century ago we were still trading blows with our in-state archrival, the Virginia Military Institute.

In the 80's we were a middling independent; peers of our athletic department were Southern Miss, ECU, Memphis, Louisville, Cincinnati, Rutgers, Temple and Boston College. We weren't a major independent, destined to join a power conference when the chips fell- (Pitt, Miami, FSU, GT, Syracuse, WVU, Penn State, USCe, ND), and we were well ahead of the likes of minor independents such as NLU, USL, UNT, W&M, Richmond & Colgate.

Virginia Tech is a very late addition into the P5.

The only programs making that leap since include Louisville & Cincinnati (2005) and Utah (2011). (UCF and BYU are on their way; SMU, Rice & arguably Tulane have since dropped off the map. Houston and Cincinnati have been in power conferences previously. Boise State and SD State have bowed out of both an unstable Big East and a similar state of the current Big 12).

Maybe we're sad today. Maybe we're still recovering from a stable but deliberately mediocre Jim Weaver era.

But K-State can own that anecdotal pity party as far as I'm concerned.

Also, there are 24 D1 sports, so 24 are up for grabs every year. There are rough 64 power five teams.

The statistics are really not as grim as you suggest. With the money we spend, we should have at least one natty in something by now.

This exact "participation ribbon" mentality from our fans is a big part of why we can't ever expect a national championship until it actually happens regardless of how positive the outlook might be. The response to continually falling short by explaining them away with 'well we made progress and it was a great season' is bullshit. There is undoubtedly more money and resources being directed to VT Athletics right now which I do think obviously helps. But in 20 years no one is going to give two shits about how many ACC Championships we have in any given sport or how good of a regular season team we consistently were. Our athletic department to this point has provided a solid regular season experience where the team you're watching in really any sport has a good shot to win that game. Anything beyond that isn't going to happen

I'm curious, what do you think complaining on a non-univeristy VT sports fan site will accomplish? I think people can want better from their teams will still recognizing the successes of this season.

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

I'm not sure what a "non-university" sports fan site is supposed to accomplish outside of providing a channel for people to voice their opinions, both negative and positive. I think people can want better and be critical of their teams as well. Either way it's rooted in the same idea that we want better of all teams at Virginia Tech. But the fact of the matter is that fans have "wanted better" of VT sports teams since the beginning of this university's existence and exactly ZERO of them have delivered.

I'm confused, you said:

This exact "participation ribbon" mentality from our fans is a big part of why we can't ever expect a national championship until it actually happens regardless of how positive the outlook might be

But now you're saying:

But the fact of the matter is that fans have "wanted better" of VT sports teams since the beginning of this university's existence and exactly ZERO of them have delivered.

So is it the fans fault for acknowledging and appreciating a team's successes even if they don't achieve their end goal or is it not?

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

In my opinion, yes, at least to an extent. When you have a fan base that is fully content with simply being "good enough" the powers to be have no reason to push more chips to the center of the table. Comments on here and on social media after every season from our fans year after year lead me to believe that it's just really not THAT important. You think if a university like Ohio State stopped failed to win a national championship in any sport over the next 20 years their fans wouldn't lose their minds? Again, I do think the athletic department has started to do some of that but personally I believe it's to keep up rather than get ahead. We're not exactly setting trends with anything we're doing. Part of the issue is VT has never known what it's like to win something at that level of significance and so it's difficult to make that part of your culture.

it's just really not THAT important

To a lot of us, it isn't. That doesn't mean it shouldn't matter to folks like you, but it crosses a line when anyone takes their own opinion and blames "the fans who are less than we are" for what happens on the field.

I don't want this to devolve into a shouting match so I will retire, but wanted to put that out there.

I understand where they're coming from, and I know I'm guilty of that too. We just love our Hokies and wanna cheer them on regardless. I am not sure I want to lose that, but it does kind of set expectations to just be there.

Look, it's all about getting a higher number of opportunities. Championships aren't something an AD can just decide to build out of nothing, but require a lot of luck and timing. Sure, if we had Nick Saban, Geno Auriemma, or Patty Gasso, we should expect begin expecting championships on a regular basis. But we don't and I don't think Alabama, UCONN, or OU knew they were getting the best coach in the sport (currently coaching) when they made the hire. And these coaches don't leave their universities, so it's not like anyone can go out and hire a legend.

So, our only opportunity is (a) hope one of our coaches turns into the next legend or (b) keep putting out top-tier teams that have a chance. The more opportunities, the greater likelihood one becomes a champion.

And Whit Babcock has made the possibility of championship via (b) way more likely. Hokies made an NCAA tournament in a ton of sports in 2021-2022:

And as a department, you continue to build on that, and the results will eventually materialize.

๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ

This exact "participation ribbon" mentality from our fans is a big part of why we can't ever expect a national championship until it actually happens regardless of how positive the outlook might be.

Something I try to teach my kids when coaching them in mundane life stuff, academics, or team sports is that it's not about being the best at whatever you do. That's nice, but it's not the goal -- because only one person or one team is ever going to be that at a time, and we can't go around calling 99.99% of the world failures because they aren't the best. The goal is to do your best, do it honestly (not cheat/lie/steal to accomplish it), learn from your mistakes (everyone makes them all the time), and at the end of the day aim to be a better person than you were at the start.

Small gains compound over time. That can lead to being the best some day, or it might never, and at the end of the day we really have very little control over that. We see it all the time in sports and life: a key player breaks a bone in the first game of the season; a ball bounces unpredictably on a routine play; a bird gets hit by a popup; a cleat doesn't grip right and someone trips.

I was never the best at any sport I played, but I had fun, did pretty well for what I had, and learned the lessons. I'm not the best people manager in the world professionally, but the folks who work for me tend to hang around and do good work. My team isn't the most important at my company, but we get things done and try to improve ourselves over time. These are all things I consider strengths, and I personally look at things like college sports the same way.

"Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly"

My generation (millennials) in particular suffers from apathy induced by always being told to aim for perfection and knowing you're never gonna get there. The "do your best" and "participation trophy" mentalities have been so maligned that the result is internalizing "if you're not first, you're last" instead. There's a huge wall to get over when you're not naturally good at something because doing poorly, even at first, is so heavily criticized. Sometimes you just have to be told that it's better to get out there and do it at all than to sacrifice the good for the perfect and be a lump. And, guess what? If you just get out there and do something ( even poorly) but you keep doing it, you get better and eventually you might actually be damned good at what you work at.

#4 national seed in baseball

To not be one of the final 8 teams remaining in either sport after hosting both the regional and super regional for both is a failure. There is no other ways to describe it. One of those teams should have advanced. The fact neither did... Monumental opportunity that almost never comes around and we choked. Massively disappointing end to the spring season no matter how you look at it.

This is my school
This is home

I think the fact that we lost isn't what's so disappointing, it's how we lost this game three. Something wasn't right all afternoon. The pitching was rough but we kind of knew that. Our hitters being unable to get anything going was a huge collapse for the team. We just didn't have great body language and looked like we either didn't think we could win or wanted to get it over with. Tough pill to swallow when hosting at your home field to go out like that. Whatever it was, something was just off about today.

Considering where we were picked to finish at the start of the season this was a monumental success. We were dead 2 weeks into the conference season. Losing sucks, but considering where we ended up compared to where we were "supposed" to be helps to change the perspective.

You're not wrong. We were picked #4, meaning we should have made it to the final four. Falling short is a disappointment (wouldn't call it failure). I wish we had played up to our ability. But I am damn proud of our diamond sports this year and hope this the start of a dynasty in the making. Learn, grow and build.

We put the K in Kwality

Ended sooner than we would have liked, but no failures here! Proud of these Hokies that got us two super regionals and national recognition. Rankings are just rankings and any team that made it this far is already successful.

Put it this way, I am happy that the programs individually excelled the way they did this year. Happy that both softball and baseball had the seasons they did and very much hope that they can continue this going forward.

At an athletic department level, you have to be a bit disappointed that neither broke through and you have to feel like its a bit of a failure to host 2 super regionals within 2 weeks of each other and be eliminated in each.

You can be happy for the players and teams and support them fully while at the same time feeling a little let down that, as a university, we weren't able to go further than we did.

This is my school

Batt ball, round ball, wrasslin, TNF, we had a lot to be excited about this year. I keep hoping that one of these teams will exceed their rankings at the end of the year, but each seems to fall just a bit short. However considering where we started in each, where we were a few years ago, and how most did better than the preseason expectations, I am hopeful we are just having some growing pains.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

Rugby won the club national championship.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Do you react this way when you miss a green light?

Bob: What would ya say ya do here?

Brad: I already told you! I iron out the minutiae so Justin doesn't have to. I have people skills dammit! What the hell is wrong with you people?

Oh Gawg...don't even get me started. We could've made that light and been on time for that dinner, that would have gotten me the promotion, that would have gotten us the bigger house, that we would have sold for a huge profit, that would have invested into Amazon stock, that would have doubled our money, that would have created our company, that would have started the NIL company, that would have given us the pitchers need to win a Championship...all because you made me miss that fvcking green light!!!

We put the K in Kwality

To not be one of the final 8 teams remaining in either sport after hosting both the regional and super regional for both is a failure. There is no other ways to describe it.

I don't know about all that.

That's just ONE way to look at it. The "glass half empty" way.

Another way to look at it is that this was the most successful baseball team VT has ever fielded. Put us on the map. Should be a lot easier to get back there now.

Likewise with softball, makes the teams more attractive to future coaches and players. Seems to me the investment and energy Whit has made in these sports are paying off.

I've enjoyed watching these teams make some noise. Good for the university, good for these sports programs. Good for the student athletes. Good for the students and alumni of VT.

Good all around. Sure, I'd rather see them win the whole damned thing. But getting this far in both sports was also an accomplishment. Good on these athletes and their coaches.

Seems to me the investment and energy Whit has made in these sports are paying off.

With all due respect, we've had good teams over the last 20 years, even before Whit. Softball has been to the WCWS, men's and women's soccer have both been to the College Cup. We've been close before. So far, we've never turned that into sustained success and never built upon those accomplishments.

Lets see how these programs do over the next 3 or 4 years before we start patting ourselves on the back about how much the investments are paying off. And really, I'd like a team to bring home some NCAA hardware before we start holding victory parties over said investment.

This is my school
This is home

I don't recall having done all of that in the same year before. It's my distinct impression that our athletics programs are improving. It's not an accident.

This year VT WON the ACC tournament in basketball, made it to the NCAA tournament in soccer, and made it to the post season in both softball and baseball. Was the first time in VT history the baseball team made it to a super regional.

Sure, I'd like to see them win a national championship. Now it's harder than ever. But I'm willing to give Whit, the coaches, and the student athletes some credit in the mean time. I'm seeing some positive signs. Reminds me of a saying: "The harder I work, the luckier I get."

So we just need the football team to make the playoffs this year for a clean sweep? Basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, track, and football?

Another positive at the club level. VT's club Track team won the Men's NIRCA National Championship this spring. Women were third.

...with spirits true and faithful...

Starting pitching is so vital in the playoff baseball. OU had an Ace and apparently some freshman that figured it out two weeks ago. Horton absolutely dominated one of the best lineups in the game. VT needs to recruit or develop some pitchers that can take over a game to make it to Omaha in the future.

Time honored reality of baseball. The further you go, the more critical good pitching is. We'll need to reload for position players leaving for the MLB draft, and focus on bringing in more top quality young arms. Great season, Go Hokies!!

I think we're all missing the bigger picture here: Tennessee lost as the #1 seed.

2022 Season Challenge: TBD
Previous Challenges: Star Wars (2019), Marvel (2020), Batman (2021)

Eh, it's the Super Regionals. To me that feels like a 1 seed losing in the Elite Eight - technically an upset, but they already got pretty far, and their opponent already showed they were legitimate by advancing far enough to play that game.

It's not like they lost in the first round to a #64 seed.

So if you put the lens of this argument on the Hokies, you would think we did pretty damn well this season. Dare I say best season in program history....

VTAthletics posted on FB that we are the only FBS school in 21 - 22to have team to qualify for the NCAA tourney/bowl game in:
Women's & Men's Soccer
Women's & Men's Basketball
Football
Women's Golf
Softball
Baseball

I guess wrestling is left out because it is really individual qualifiers.

Sounds like a pretty good season to me

I wonder if you take out women's golf if that adds other universities. Not to take anything away from them, but it kind of feels like "we're undefeated, on Tuesdays, at night, in June, in odd years, when there is a full moon." But on three big anerican pro sports and the biggest world sport we nailed it this year for both men's and women's team.

Those hats were made for both teams prior to the supers being finalized. Similar to Super Bowl Champion t-shirts being prepared for both teams prior to kickoff.

Probably, but it looks like ours went on sale Sunday morning.

I am not sure what to do with my hands now
