TOP GUN MAVERICK: and why French hates it without seeing it

I went with my brother this morning to see Top Gun

If you have hesitations about it but like the first one, then you will like this movie. It isn't AS good as the first but this is a very gratifying sequel. And Jennifer Connelly may be more qualified now than she was when she was younger. Or maybe I'm older, I don't know.

I know that most of the flying sequences were real and I think that really added.

They also didn't have it just dripping with fan service, either.

And we need to crowd fund an Archer parody of Top Gun, in the same way Family Guy did Star Wars.

It was incredible...

My wife liked it better than the first.

I couldn't get past the guy flying that wore glasses, worst decision ever.

Just so he stays above the 10,000 ft. hard deck.

Who Bob? I'm nearly confident that if I was in the military and had some sort of callsign it would be dumb like that. Prob be Mike or something.

ESPN. The coverage is excellent, you'd be surprised at how much you can pick up.

Yes Bob, I had no problem with him being a dork, but the glasses would disqualify him from flying.

No I totally understand that. I didn't think of it at the time though. Hey, maybe they are just a fashion statement.

ESPN. The coverage is excellent, you'd be surprised at how much you can pick up.

And since he was a RIO does that change it up at all?

ESPN. The coverage is excellent, you'd be surprised at how much you can pick up.

So looking at the rules, he would have to have 20/40 or better to start school if correctable to 20/20. But after he passes school he can deteriorate some.

But I doubt those glasses handle the G-Force needed for the maneuvers. But I don't really know what glasses can handle. But those got to hurt your face at those Gs.

Maybe not at 9 or 10 g's but at normal flight conditions and g's I can't imagine it would be all that worse than anything else they have on.

ESPN. The coverage is excellent, you'd be surprised at how much you can pick up.

Most of their flight suit is designed to handle the Gs. The suit is literally there too keep the blood in the top half of the body, as high Gs makes it flow to your feet and then you black out.

Yeah the science is fun, we had to do accelerometer tests on Roller Coasters whenever they went in. And Intimidator at Kings Dominion had to get a redesign because the curve at the bottom of the first drop was too fast for too long and people were blacking out. Too bad really because it was way better before.

ESPN. The coverage is excellent, you'd be surprised at how much you can pick up.

It was more fun when people blacked out .... um I'm off to update my spreadsheet .... /s

I once got to go in a pilot training centrifuge, that was fun because unlike a roller coaster you pulled the Gs for more than a moment. 3 Gs was hard to hold my a up for more than about 5-10 seconds. 5 Gs was tough to lift my arm at all.

So Wasnick is 5'-2" now?

Having an Uncle who flew in the air force during Nam and wears pretty damn thick glasses, yes you can be an air force pilot.

However (unless things have changed), Combat is 100% out, transports fine. Also he had to carry a back up pair on him in a shirt pocket. It was understood that if for some reason the pilot lost his glasses he reaches for the spare automatically.

He looked so much like Bill Pullman (Independence Day president) I knew he had to be his son. Just a fun fact. Had to check after to confirm.

Jack Bauer fears no one. Except Xavier Adibi.

The military services have loosened the vision requirements so glasses are permitted. They're still fairly restrictive, but not like they've been in the past, where glasses were prohibited. Those past restrictions were carried over to the airline industry also. Many airlines wouldn't even interview candidates who wore glasses. Delta was notorious for this. I have friends who had some fairly radical eye surgery procedures back in the 80's so they could get an airline job.

I dont think the vision requirement is as strict if you aren't the pilot, which he wasn't.

The first one is a vibes movie. It's all sights and sounds. The second one is a more 'normal' movie, but mostly it's a "Tom Cruise rocks" movie.

He definitely owns it, and I don't have any actual love for Tom Cruise, but if someone were to ask me to name a Tom Cruise character it would be Maverick (as much as I wanna say Cole Trickle.

But I don't think he completely overshadows everyone else either. The kid they got to play Goose's son nailed that role, too.

ESPN. The coverage is excellent, you'd be surprised at how much you can pick up.

Days of Thunder is also a vibes movie. Tony Scott knew how to do it. RIP king.

Haven't seen it.

But Maverick was restoring the wrong kind of F6 for a second gen naval aviator.

My neighbor is a former F15 pilot. We had a fun chat about the movie last night.

The biggest "Hollywood" moments that he rolled his eyes at were the Mach 10 eject at the beginning of the movie along with the close-range evasion of the SAMs at the end. He says that real SAMs are so fast that there is no feasible defense, especially when they are fired so close to you.

I haven't seen the movie yet. But if it's Maverick who evades the SAMs, well all I can say is if anyone can, Maverick can. lol

Most of the are mach 4+ if I remember, and fighters max out at around Mach 2 with afterburner, which you don't what afterburner on when heat seeking things are after you (they're hotter than the counter measures)

It's is funny when you talk to SR-71 pilots who say how to counter SAMs is just speed up.

Helps when you start at 70k+ AGL too. :-)

Still the funniest SR71 story I've heard:

That was pretty cool, hadn't heard it before.

Or maybe I'm older, I don't know.

I came here looking for detailed analysis why French hates Top Gun. I am disappoint

Onward and upward

Every reason that we are giving why the movie is good; that's why French hates it.

ESPN. The coverage is excellent, you'd be surprised at how much you can pick up.

Because it's good, like a grilled Gruy癡re and Havarti sandwich.

I love my wife. She asked me to go see it. They lost me when Maverick owned a P-51 Mustang. The Mustang is an awesome plane (when I went through my fighter plane phase as a kid, it was my favorite one to draw), but it was an Army Air Force fighter plane. A self-respecting Navy pilot would have a Hellcat, a Wildcat, or maybe a Corsair (Marines.)

Cinematography is tremendous. The movie is absolute crap (although I did like how they IRON EAGLED a Tomcat to fly home.) Jennifer C. is the only other highlight besides the scenes from the fighter cockpit.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

Yeah I understand about the P-51 but whose going to tell Tom cruise he can't fly his own ane in the movie

I'm sure the producers and technical advisors thought of that regarding the P-51.

But when one of the last remaining mega movie stars is making a movie about fighter gets, and owns a fighter...what are you gonna do

French sounding old af lol

Has Tom Cruise ever been in a movie where he hasn't taken his shirt off? Perhaps this is the first?

Gotta hand it to the guy, his thetans are on point. Still looks great at 59

Nah... he was shirtless in the dog fight football game. He put his shirt back on just in time for Jon Hamm to ask him wtf he was doing.

I just want to know when are we getting a tropic thunder like spoof of top gun

Forgot about that movie it's cinema gold for anyone who hasn't watched it

Not gonna lie, I've watched it twice already. It was spectacular on the iMax screen. 9/10 and
nothing beats Jennifer Connelly in Career Opportunities. She was stunning.

Tyrod did it Mikey, Tyrod did it!!
