With Signing Day coming in December, I'm expecting at least 2 more commits for this class. My hope is Hillman is one of them. He is committing in December.

William Spencer is the Top DL in Indiana, and we've made headway. Would be a nice 4โญ addition to our class.

Otherwise, it's onto 2024, and I'm excited about 2024 ๐Ÿ˜Ž

As with most of these things, he's in play until he isn't.

Sure would be nice to land a 4 star to close out 2023. Need to start setting the precedent for better things to come. Looks like Spencer is a strong Kentucky prospect.

Bumping for confusion reasons, as the October thread was once again at the top.

Hokies just offered Louisa HS freshman RB Savion Hiter. The kid is an absolute stud and already 6'/180lb. I was at the most recent game vs Albemarle where he ran for 240+yd and 5TD on like 20 carries and came away completely impressed with his strength/balance/vision. He already looks like a man amongst boys. He will be a 4* or better if he stays healthy. Would be a huge get for us in 3 years.

Maybe CBP can get him to reclassify to Class of '23. NIL wad of Hardee's coupons could do it.

I went to Albemarle and unless anything has changed they kinda suck at football. The best team they had was my freshman year when RJ Archer was the qb. That team was just above .500. Albemarle isn't much of a measuring stick IMO

Onward and upward

Albemarle was #2 in the district coming into the game I believe. They have a really good QB and a few very athletic receivers that kept them in the game for a while.

I want a heavy Hit(t)er for our team!

IMO, this is what VT needs to do to reestablish a pipeline - we need to get in early with good players. That's our only shot. Means we have to scout incredibly well.

Does anyone have a realistic view of what we have to offer players from an NIL standpoint? It feels like such murky water, and it feels like we don't have the money to spend like the big boys, but what is the real difference? Anyone with sauce?

I hate rude behavior in a man. Won't tolerate it.

Based on who has received NIL deals that are made public, it's mostly veteran leaders and starters that have received thus far. I don't think VT's NIL companies has really been involved directly in recruiting, but maybe someone has better knowledge on that.

From what I remember in a presser during the offseason, Pry was asked about how the NIL plays in recruiting. Pry responded by stating recruiting is about getting players that want to be at VT and opportunities via NIL will follow. Reading between the lines, that means Pry doesn't want to recruit players in search of that bag out of HS, but will work for that bag.

It's a good question, and you have to wonder if they will need to use the NIL to lure a guy like Delane's younger brother Faheem. Or at least use the NIL to get the Mansoor some benefits that would trickle to the family and Faheem.

The flipside of that coin is whether Alabama or any other blue blood lures Mansoor away via the portal and the NIL with the intent of trickling it down to the Delane family to make it more likely Faheem signs that LOI.

๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ

While there are no absolutes and every case is different, a whole lot of the SEC recruiting for top talent seems to include a heavy dose of NIL bidding war. The rich getting richer, and those without the NIL funding to support recruiting will fall further behind. Sad but generally true in the top tier, for the most part.

My take: we've built the NIL infrastructure, but don't have the funding.

  • We have a relationship with three collectives. Anecdotally, I've seen/heard the most about Triumph NIL.
  • Pry's comments are not inspiring:

[Recruits shouldn't] come here [just] because of NIL. ...I don't want anybody choosing Virginia Tech because of a monetary amount. They are coming for the wrong reasons"

We'll be competitive as anybody in our league to a degree. I say competitive; it may not mean as much, but we will be competitive

  • There was also a report that we have 28 players making a combined $300k in NIL.
  • When you read about Auburn raising $6.4M for NIL or you see that Ole Miss has 11 players making 6-figures, it makes you think that VT is a bit behind.
  • For what it's worth - Clemson and Stanford are two well known schools that are taking non-traditional paths to NIL (and by 'non-traditional', I mean not really engaging).

If anyone is looking to go to VISAA semifinals at Benedictine this weekend here is email I just got.

The BCP varsity football team has earned the #2 seed in the VISAA state tournament and will be hosting a semi-final game this Saturday, November 12 at 1 p.m. against St. Christopher's at Bobby Ross Stadium on the Benedictine Schools of Richmond Campus. The team has had a strong year, finishing 7-3, and looks to return to the state championship game again.

Tickets can be purchased online or with cash onsite and are $10 per person or $30 per family. Please click VISAA - Ticket Spicket to purchase your tickets. As this is a state sanctioned event, Coach's Club passes are not valid for this game. If you are unable to join us in person, we will be livestreaming this game via our Benedictine Schools of Richmond Youtube Channel.

Also this Saturday, our schools will also be hosting the VISAA volleyball championship matches in the McMurtrie-Reynolds Pavilion throughout the day. As parking will be limited for these events, we have secured an off-campus parking location at St. Catherine's fields (12944 River Rd, Henrico, VA 23238) and will be running a shuttle to that location when onsite parking is full. The shuttle will continue to run until 45 minutes after the end of the football game. We strongly encourage fans to carpool. Hope to see you at the game and thank you for your support of our athletic teams

An update from Rivals shows Brandyn Hillman trending towards the good guys. Would be a rather large pickup for Pry to pick up the remaining top 10 2023 VA player. Could step in immediately as an offensive weapon for us.

Fantastic individual. Lot's of respect for him and for how he brought that Pinecrest football program out of the grave... literally.

don't know where to put this, but it is pretty unbelievable. i had to read it several times to comprehend it. after all the jokes we make on here, he might actually get drafted!!

Lol, Lawson and Hooker were never on the roster together. How he has managed to stretch his eligibility out to now is absolutely incredible.

Is he like 30yr old? How is this possible?

Yeah my brain hurts... You mean like the Scott Loeffler I'ma-hire-your-HS-coach Dwayne Lawson? The committed-back-whem-willvt3-was-still-at-tech Dwayne Lawson?

edit - updated with some details found on DraftScout.com

1. 2015 - freshman year @ Tech
2. 2016 - xfer to Hutchison CC
3. 2017 - xfer/committed to Illinois, but sat out
4. 2018 - xfer to Garden City CC
5. 2019 - xfer to Missouri Southern "Junior" played in 8 games, 45 yards passing (1 INT) , 8 yards rushing (0 TD), 488 yards receiving (3TD)
6. 2020 - Missouri Southern ?? (injured?)
7. 2021 - Missouri Southern ?? (injured?)
8. 2022 - Missouri Southern "Senior" played in 11 games, 303 yards rushing (3 td), 74 yards receiving (0TD)

Didn't he end up at Illinois for a minute?

Yes

uva - the taint of the ACC

Trying to figure out how he gets to 8 years of college football... here's my best guess
4yrs regular eligibility (2015, 2016, 2018, 2019)
+1x bonus COVID season, (2022)
+1x redshirt (2017)
+2x medical redshirts (2020, 2021)

Dwayne 'Van Wilder' Lawson

uva - the taint of the ACC

Looks like Missouri Southern didn't have a 2020 season due to Covid. Not sure what happened in 2021, but I'm guessing he was injured because I checked several box scores and he wasn't there.

So yeah crazily enough it all works out if he gets a redshirt year at Illinois + an empty covid year and he doesn't even need an injury RS to do it. I guess community colleges don't count against NCAA eligibility then? I guess in terms of actual eligibility it was this--

freshman year -- VT
R-fresh year -- Illinois
R-soph year -- 2019 Missouri Southern
R-junior year -- 2021 Missouri Southern (injured or didn't play)
R-senior year -- 2022 Missouri Southern

Crazy.

A lot of people go to college for 8 years.

Serious question. How would the VT community respond if we recruited and/or landed Marcus Stokes, recruit from Florida who was released from Florida verbal for dropping unmentionable language in a 2 second twitter video? He's a 4 star, and by all accounts a pretty good baller. 23rd ranked quarterback in 20. Just curious.

I hate rude behavior in a man. Won't tolerate it.

I think in a situation like this, the staff should discuss it amongst themselves, and if they want to move forward, they should poll the team on their thoughts. Let the team decide.

Another white bronco? The first one didn't go too far.

Allowing the team to decide is a complicated question. I think a big factor in that kind of polling is how popular the current QB is. How does the team weigh the chance of winning more games against loyalty to a current team mate. Trying to stay within the community guidelines here; but I think penalizing a high school kid for singing along with a popular rap song is not fair. Sit him down and explain why what he did is wrong and give him a chance to show he understands. But don't ruin his career.

Doesn't matter if it's cake or pie as long as it's chocolate.

He's not being punished for "singing along with a popular rap song", but other than that I agree with your sentiment. If he truly shows understanding and remorse for his actions then he should 100 percent get another chance. That being said he is the reason he is in this predicament and is not a victim in this. Hope he grows and succeeds at his next step.

Te to qb

I think it's staff and captains decide together.

FWIW, his stock has been dropping. A lot of people saying that UF used this as an excuse to pull an offer without looking like the bad guy.

Twitter me

Florida also picked up a QB from the portal. The theory that they just used this as an excuse to get out of a commitment they regret is plausible.

Doesn't matter if it's cake or pie as long as it's chocolate.

Honestly, I'd support it. I don't know about you guys, but I made a ton of terrible choices as a teenager. Should the kid have recorded something like that? No. However, I'm truly thankful that my teenage years weren't captured on social media, and I'll leave it at that LOL.

Give the kid another chance if the team captains and staff support it. While reinforcing the idea that certain words and actions yield certain outcomes. Make it clear that he did something wrong, and if contrition is there, give the kid a 2nd chance. Make it clear that he's walking a fine line though from hence forth.

Unfortunately this is the world we live in. People who have too much time on their hands love digging stuff up 5-10+ years ago and demonize them for it and act like there isn't a chance they haven't grown as a person and learn from it. Everyone, including myself, on this planet has said or did some things we probably regret (or like you said, glad it wasn't recorded) and have learn from our mistakes. I am not making excuses for the kid because he shouldn't have ever say/recorded that, but those who criticize people for what they did/say in the distant past (especially the young and dumb phases of our lives) and then the person(s) digging up the info thinking they are as innocent as an angel, are the biggest of hypocrites.

Humans make mistakes. It's ok to make mistakes as long as you learn from them. No one is or will be perfect. Now, if you're a repeat offender, that's a different story, but I don't think that applies to this kid.

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

He managed to say the n word in a 2 second twitter video? Was that all of the video? If he posted it himself that's about the stupidest thing you can do. Not sure I want that around a team with new coaches trying to build a new culture.

Not mentioned in these comments is that the kid has to be a scheme fit, a culture fit, and has to actually want to come to VT. Blacksburg isn't Florida; there's no palm trees here.

Twitter me

Damn that's our district high school. I have to say living here I've met a lot of suburban white kids who don't seem to understand the language they use can have consequences. The coaching staff should really have someone like A Jags players or coach come in and talk to them, god knows the school board won't have anyone come in.

Not gonna argue one side or the other but I will say other big time programs have done/overlooked much worse things in the pursuit of winning

VT has overlooked much worse in the past.

Unrated WR out of Bishop Dunne high school in Dallas, he had some interest but no offer from SMU. He signed with D2 Texas A&M Commerce. He redshirted in 2019. I think this should mean he'll have 2 years of eligibility left.

They moved up to FCS this season where he was on the Walter Payton watch list and followed that up with a 1000 yard season.. It looks like he's getting offers out the wazoo right now. A rudimentary Google search shows Miami and FSU articles speculating their schools are among his offers.

We still got hokie staff connections there, right? Xavier Adibi was there and now Jack Tyler?

Let that kid take one long flight to the middle of a cornfield and he will probably "Nope" right back on the plane.

I am not sure what to do with my hands now

Tom Osborne had to be the best recruiter ever as he would recruit Hawaii and bring those guys to Nebraska in late November when it was snowing and they'd commit.

I don't think he'll flip and I see this as a huge positive. Rhule at Baylor recruited the same way I think we're recruiting this class. He focused on height, weight, speed, and wingspan. That staff didn't care about recruiting rankings or if the kids could actually play football, they wanted projectable athleticism. It was a Moneyball approach that has a ceiling but can make you very competitive especially in a rebuild. Recruiting rankings take in projectability but also your ability to actually play.

Now this path requires a staff that can actually develop those mid-3* guys. Rhule can, we'll see if Pry is able to. But I have noticed this might be something we are trying to pull off, notably because of the wingspan of guys like Copeland, Abbey, Findlayter, the speed of guys like Copeland, Mitchell, Heath, and the height of guys like Copeland, Woodson, Stevens, Krystian Williams. A defense made up of Keli Lawsons is one that could show our potential and then we could see an uptick in rankings.
