Tisdale was Suspended for betting on NBA Finals

This is really dumb. The NCAA is way behind the times for yet another thing. There were no conflicts of interest, Tisdale is an adult, and sports betting is legal in Virginia.

Note: this is the only source I've been able to find in this, sorry there's a link to a paywall article here. Please delete if necessary, but I thought it warrants it's own thread given the NCAA-ness of it.

[Tisdale] missed half of his senior season for placing a little more than $400 in bets on a professional sport he doesn't play that produced $41 in winnings, he said. The winnings were subsequently donated to charity after the violation was reported.

None [of the bets] were large-scale, all between $1 and $5, but he made more than 100 of them, totaling around $400.

What. A. Fucking. Joke.

There have been many times I've said 'fuck the NCAA' but this has to be the most mind-boggling of them. An 'amateur' athlete wins $41 betting legally, and has to sit 6 games and donate his winnings to charity?

Edit:

Tisdale regrets breaking the rules, though he says the reason for his foray into sports wagering wasn't out of boredom or fun. He and his girlfriend have a son who will be 2 the day after Thanksgiving. He was looking for a way to get some extra cash for things like diapers and formula ("Huggies are not cheap at all," he said).

Okay rich folks - How about Tizzy shows up to an elementary school or something and meets some kids, and in exchange this collective supplies his family a couple hundred diapers. Holy shit this is ridiculous.

On a 100% serious note. Can I legally buy diapers and send them to Tisdale? I am a hokie club member and alum. I guess I'm considered a booster? Is this legal now?

My understanding is that he needs to provide some service (other than playing football for the Virginia Tech Hokies) in exchange for compensation.

He could do an AMA on TKP in exchange for diapers. He could post an instagram story for you. He could show up at your kids' birthday party.

Put his face on the diaper to get the NIL angle and then repay him with the same diapers (?)

"Just like a leaky defense, Alan Tisdale has no use for a leaky diaper! Sack those stains with Huggies!"

Put the letters NCAA on the inside.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

@joe can you make this happen?

@anyone would it be ok?

It would be cool if VT ran a fundraiser at the UVA game for our "Little Brother".

Donation areas at the major tailgate areas where you can bring in packs of diapers that the school can donate/distribute as they please.

and I wouldn't mind if a few select fans threw a pack of Pampers on the field every time Tisdale makes a play.

An 'amateur' athlete wins $41 betting legally...

TBH, he didn't "win" $41, he lost $359. The fact that he felt compelled to donate the $41 to charity is an absolute crock of shit, too.

"Yes I am going to have favorites. My favorites are high production and low maintenance players, coaches, and staff." - JMFF

Based on the language in the article, it appears he 'spent' $400 to receive $441.

Well that's what happens when I bet on sports.

"Yes I am going to have favorites. My favorites are high production and low maintenance players, coaches, and staff." - JMFF

I am assuming he won back his $400 in bets and got an additional $41 in winnings.

Edit: Thursday before a long weekend. I'll start drinking.

I read "$41 in winnings" as having won enough to cover his initial $400 in bets plus making $41.

It would add insult to injury if he in fact lost 7/8ths of his initial $400 in bets. Then got suspended for his 5th year because of it.

Fucking Crock. Gambling is legal in like 42 states now, and he didn't bet on college football.

Insane to suspend him at all for betting on a different sport than he plays, at an entirely different level. Even more insane that the punishment is so punitive.

NCAA telling everyone that is honest about misunderstanding that you will be punished severely. So the logical conclusion would be to never talk to the NCAA at all. Just don't say anything at all to them.

This is the only thing that needs to be said to the NCAA

As if the entire premise of being punished for doing something completely legal with 0 conflicts of interest isn't asinine enough, the part that really put me over the edge was he self-reported. He didn't want to put the team at risk if it came out, so he went to Pry and owned it.

He did exactly what the book said he should have done and got royally screwed.

Also - the NCAA doesn't have a set punishment for gambling. They take it case by case. So this isn't a scenario where the NCAA has a dumbass, rigid rule they had to stick to; a human being with a brain read over all of the details and decided 9 games was appropriate.

Another NCAA problem - Guidelines and punishments should be clear.

Regardless of how stupid this rule is, kudos to him for immediately being honest and upfront about it, even though he had to know he was gonna get screwed.

My wife takes the kids and leaves the house while I watch my Hokie games.........nuff said

This is fucking bullshit.

I highly doubt this was his decision alone without consultation from VT staff. He was probably given options and nudged towards self-disclosure would be my guess. Again though, don't say anything. Hindsight, if the penalty was this harsh for how he handled it so well with self-disclosure, I cannot imagine it would be more stringent if the NCAA somehow found out. What, would they suspend him for the whole year? NCAA is worthless.

Sports betting now legal in most all states and widely participated in, NCAA allows Wild West for NIL which has turned basically into pay for play, and yet he gets suspended for betting on an NBA game. Lmao what a complete garbage organization.

NCAA allows Wild West for NIL

The NCAA never chose to allow this. They resisted it at every step including going to court repeatedly. The wild west of NIL only happened because the NCAA lost they court case and made ZERO contingencies. There was no backup plan if they lost the case. So instead they are currently scrambling while the respect for the organization is somehow even lower than it was.

"That move was slicker than a peeled onion in a bowl of snot." -Mike Burnop

Yeah I mean, ok they lost the case, but where are the regulations? They have almost no oversight over this stuff. Most of the "NIL" stuff is basically just buying recruits with very little related to name image and likeness. Texas A&M basically just put their whole recruiting class on payroll (lol that didn't work out too well). The NCAA couldn't be more worthless.

Exactly! These idiots refused to accept that they could lose a lawsuit and didn't even bother putting in the work to have a framework built if they lost.
Which is particularly amazing since everyone knew they were going to lose. The NCAA is a willfully ignorant organization still trying to clutch onto how athletics worked in the 1950s. And instead of adjusting to stay relevant, they ignore the changes, do nothing, and are helping accelerate the end of the NCAA.

"That move was slicker than a peeled onion in a bowl of snot." -Mike Burnop

In VA, you can't bet on teams in the state of VA. So even if the NCAA is trying to take a stance that there could be ANY impropriety to extrapolate from this, its just such an uneducated decision for a suspension. Shame

The NCAA owes us. And this ain't the first one. 😑

My friends who have played NCAA sports (D1 tennis & D3 baseball) wouldn't participate in March Madness bracket challenges that had no money involved because they were afraid it might be a violation. This is like the bagel but no cream cheese rule.

This is up there with the female golfer that was suspended for a year for washing her car.

Details...she pulled her car around to the back of the cart barn where the public wouldn't go, and because it was "special, privileged" access, she was deemed to have gain preferential treatment.

Is the rule stupid? Absolutely. Should he have known better since he is a redshirt senior? Absolutely.

I don't think it's that obvious - The NCAA rule was made when sports gambling was illegal in most of the US. Now it's legal in ~80% of the states (VA included) - No way he should have 'known better'.

In the article by Andy Bitter he talks about how Tisdale realized his mistake after an hour-long presentation that is presented by VT's compliance department to the athletes at the start of every year and about how Tisdale had previously misunderstood the rules regarding online sports betting, so it wasn't his first time hearing about this. Since no one else on the team got suspended for online sports betting, I'm thinking they probably knew not to do it lol.

Like I said earlier, it's a stupid rule and I love the man, but clearly lots of NCAA athletes know not to do this.

clearly lots of NCAA athletes know not to do admit to this

FIFY

Since no one else on the team got suspended for online sports betting, I'm thinking they probably knew not to do it self report it.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

NCAA proving once again that there is no incentive in playing nice or by the book with them. The more honest you are the bigger they are going to fuck you over the second they get the chance because everyone else knows to lawyer up and tie anything and everything in the courts long enough to make punishment irrelevant.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

When there is only a limited amount of time that you can be punished, drag it out in the courts until they have no authority to punish you.

I dont even understand why betting against pro sports is against the rules in the first place.

This.

What ability did he have to influence the outcome?

This is going to be great for the ACC.

So, I'm trying to teach my daughter, she's 8, the value of discipline and character. One of the ways that we are doing this is with getting her to do things she knows she's supposed to do without having to be told to do them. A simple one that we focus on is teeth brushing. If she's on a break from school, she'll go days without it. This recently came to a head and I punished her, no iPad the next day, for not brushing her teeth. That night was a Halloween party, and needless to say, I completely forgot the next day. She got up, brushed her teeth, and reminded me that she wasn't allowed to watch her iPad. I sat her down and explained to her that what she did was character revealing, it was the thing that I was trying to teach her. Then I gave her back her iPad - to reinforce the idea that doing the right thing gets positive results.

WHY THE FUCK CAN'T THE NCAA GET THIS SHIT? He self-reported and they still suspended him. Idiots. Do you want people to not self-report? That's how you get people to not self-report.

A one game suspension for self reporting might have been appropriate. 6 Games was ludicrous.

and it was only 6 game because lawyers were able to talk them down from the original 9 games

At the end of the day, Virginia Tech needs to learn not to comply with the NCAA. Fuck that organization. They only exist to give the implication that things are under control when they very much aren't. We need to adapt the ways that everyone else has learned over the last 20 years:

Do whatever the fuck you want. If the NCAA tries to punish you, deny everything, lawyer up, and tell them to fuck off in your home state's court. Eventually, the NCAA will cave because they're a spineless organization desperate to not have the myth of control exposed in legal form, and you'll be able to get away with it all. Reggie Bush was the last time they were able to do anything, and that is now widely regarded as them overstepping their bounds.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

That's not the VT way though! Hokies Respect man, doing things the right way, honest hard work!

What the NCAA did to USC though was an absolute travesty of justice. Especially considering they completely botched the investigation into Miami letting them off the hook, continually let UNC slide after decades of cheating, and punished Penn State but later walked that back after caving to pressure. Reggie should still have his heisman and the USC titles and wins should be reinstated. Honestly I think the NCAA just couldn't stand Carroll and a west coast team owning everyone.

NCAA would be shit parents
