Biberty Post Game Pry-ssr 2022

The vibe has been too rough to subject myself to watching the post games pressers the last few weeks, but in light of a dub over the Fightin' Falwells and things somewhat coming together for the good guys(game management, OL play, penalties etc) I thought this would be a good way to keep riding this high.

A lot of this has been touched on in the FAM thread, but here's a consolidated list of insights into the sideline from Pry after the game:

  • Pry told the team not to score at the end of the game and Holston came through
  • Marve called a stifling D yesterday
  • Special Teams had the speed option out of the FG unit installed since camp
  • Mics suck again, so I missed some of the questions

I will leave you with the immortal words of a friend and classmate of mine in regards to Biberty, "F*ck 'em all, even if they celibate, f*ck 'em"

I think this game showed a lot of things to get excited about, but the biggest three for me was:
1) Marve is now the guy and didn't disappoint. If anything he might have done better than Pry has done all season.
2) This staff was 100% ready for a no score at the end. You see so many teams mess that up. That was some top notch coaching.
3) We were 2-8 and everyone could have given up on the season, but those guys came to play. So kudos to the coaching staff and to what I assume is Dax and Holston being the leaders to keep the team on track. I hope we have leaders ready to replace them because they set the tone this week

Holston passing up his first 100 yard game, and joining the rare group running backs with 4 rushing TDs in a single game to preserve a much needed win (in potentially the last game of the season, and his career) is the type of culture that we wanted Pry to instill. I'm at a loss to describe how happy I am for this team to play winning second half football.

I wish he would run every down like he rushed to score in that game. An extra three yards per carry after contact would do wonders for his stats.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

I wish we'd kneeled twice and then let Holston try to punch it in with zero time remaining. I knew they wouldn't have risked it but he earned the chance to hit 100 and 4 TDs

Wise man say:

Never run a play when you don't have to in order to win. Particularly when wins are as rare as hens teeth in the current season.

Yeah my wife asked why they didn't kick at the end, can you imagine if they blocked it and ran it back. I don't think I could watch a game again if that happened.

ooo, what if we'd run another fake FG play there at the end?

This is why I'm not an OC (and why Stinespring, Loeffler, and Cornelsen shouldn't be either)

Which given this season would have been almost expected- the opposite of last time when we blocked the kick and returned for TD only to have it not count because of the 'ice the kicker timeout' then watch 'em win the game on the new kick.

Wait... you think our OL is one of the things coming together for the team? Our run blocking has improved. Our pass blocking is abysmal.

I think the fact that we had a decent ground game yesterday is the positive takeaway. Most weeks our run blocking sucks and our pass blocking sucks. Yesterday, it was just the latter. A lot of work to be done for sure, but at least we had a viable ground attack and it delivered when needed most.

We looked closer to what I expected Rudolph to coach up. The one thing I really wanted to see out of the team this year was an identity and I feel like we're getting closer, but I certainly wish we were further along than we are at this point in the season.

Pry isn't going to call out the players for negative things in a post game press conference. That is for the film room during the week.

To be fair to SenJohn, the OL comment was just my opinion/observation from yesterday. I totally understand having a difference of opinion on them, they were far from perfect. I don't think Pry specifically touched on that unit.

To be fair I think a lot of the sacks were on Wells holding the ball too long

I was going to make this point in my original response, but I think part of the reason Wells was playing so scared yesterday was because he had pretty consistent pressure on him. There was shared blame in the passing game yesterday, but Wells made some decisions that did not help his case.

The mic situation is so frustrating. Why even post a presser for fans to watch if we can't hear the questions being asked?

If you want to be big time, act big time. Wonder if the blue bloods have these type of issues.

It is too bad we are not a technology school. Otherwise it would seem really bad that we can't figure this out.

I'm glad we are not a technology school, have you seen the women to men ratio at GT? It was bad enough when I was at VPI.

Polytechnic for life!

Ahh yes, reminds me of all the VT sausage fests. 60 guys, 5 women and a keg. What time's the fight and who is taking bets?

You went to the wrong parties, friend

I been here since day 0.

As someone who married a GT grad and got my MBA there, they have definitely improved the quality over the last 10 years

Quality was never on the table, it's quantity that's the issue

Well, they probably don't have an inferiority complex about every little thing, so there's something we've got over them.

No kidding. Its been this way for years. At least the videos are on YouTube now and you can actually watch them instead of whatever embedded player HokieSports had until recently.

Crazy.

Some God awful cbs sports nightmare.

We are biased, but for that many people/fans to continue to show up for a 2-8 team and for everyone of us watching (or not) online, by radio, or other...we have the greatest fanbase of any program. Maybe not dollar for dollar, but everyone notices when fans check out too...big kudos to the players for grinding out a win even though they could have packed it in!

Yeah I was watching Illinois at #3 Michigan yesterday in a close game. I saw the corners of the end zones of the big house empty! You should never see that when your team is doing that well. Love our fan base for continuing to show up.

Our team, at 2-8, showed that there is still fight left in them.

After further digesting Saturday's game, although I'm still not really sold on Bowen as OC right now (think co-OCs with him and Glenn, Glenn playcalling and scheming would probably be the best option), I am convinced we absolutely need to do something at QB if we are going to have any chance at more success in '23. Wells just does not see the field at all. So many stalled drives and bad field position due to him missing wide open guys consistently and very little pocket awareness/not throwing it away. It's possible more coaching could help in the off-season but this was his third year of starting. I don't see things suddenly clicking or anything. If our passing game is going to have any chance at elevating itself, we need to hit the portal hard at QB. I just don't think Wells is the guy to build around.

Florida just pullled their offer for a 4* QB Marcus Stokes because he sang along with a rap song. Don't know much about him and don't know if we want to get involved given the connotations. But he had a VT offer. He's 2023 class.

Doesn't matter if it's cake or pie as long as it's chocolate.

But was he 800% committed?!

I think he was 800% committed to Pedo U before he switched to Florida.

4* better than no star..... extend an offer

White boy who repeated the n-word while singing along, and posted the video of him rapping on social. Obviously not a malicious action, but definitely something that could (understandably) offend a lot of the team.

Gotta check the locker room vibe before extending an offer. If you have strong, player-led locker room leadership, and you can get their support, you can extend an offer. Given how young our team is/will be, I'm not sure it's a good idea.

Watched the Hugh Freeze post-game presser. Notably he gave VT a lot of credit, especially the defense. Said that despite the W-L record, VT would be (and was) the toughest D they've faced all season. Also said that at the end they definitely wanted VT to score and on the first Holsten carry, his players "tried to carry him" across the goal line (LOL) and on the second play they tried pick him up and carry him but said that VT was to well-coached in that situation. "VT" and "well-coached" in the same sentence...was good to hear.

So Marve > Odom
