Another white bronco? The first one didn't go too far.

To be fair, they only caught him "calling" hookers on his work phone. He might have just wanted some conversation. Being a college football coach can get lonely.

Terry Bowden

I imagine this is how Terry's meeting with the booster's wife went

Wait I missed the Bowden sex scandal. Good lord what is it about SEC coaches and side pieces?

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

It just means more (sex)

He tried typing SEC into the google search bar but was one key off and just rolled with it

Don't forget Mike Price.

We started screaming 'Roll Tide!' and he was yelling back, 'It's rolling, baby, it's rolling.'

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

Not that this really changes the context at all, but there's a typo. Terry Bowden's record at Auburn was 47-17, not 47-7.

This is what losing to Alabama for a decade does to a program. They get desperate enough to hire a massive POS like Hugh Freeze.

To be fair, Malzahn was 3-5 against Alabama, which I would guess is better than any other SEC coach over that span (2013-2020). Auburn is just in a league of their own in terms of crazy.

Gross. Some coordinated totally coincidental "forgiveness and grace" PR from some Auburn internet circles made this outcome seem likely in the last 24 hours or so.

I'm fully expecting Liberty to hire Art Briles to replace him

Here's the live negotiations.

Honest question, is this really worth its own thread? I mean a coach going from a school not named Virginia Tech (or even in our conference) to another school not named Virginia Tech (and not even in our own conference). I'm not saying take it down or it should not be done, just wondering why it needs its own thread as opposed to being on the coaches carousel one.

Maybe just for the jokes that will come out of it and their entertainment value?

Recovering scientist working in business consulting

I would say partly for jokes/entertainment and also for state implications. Whether we like it or not, Hugh was building a very strong program in our state, at a university that many do not like. It's also a program that we are hosting and visiting for the next few years (thanks Whit).

Another white bronco? The first one didn't go too far.

And we have to play them like twice a year for next 38 years..... And really c'mon Auburn that's the best you could do???

"Don't go to, go through"

It's also a program that we are hosting and visiting for the next few years (thanks Whit)

I think Andy Bitter tweeted it when they hired Freeze and it surprised me, but we actually don't play them again until 2027 (https://hokiesports.com/sports/2018/6/6/football-future-schedules.aspx)

Still a valid point that him leaving is relevant and good for us. Just wanted to share because it was news to me

Oh I would have thought if anyone would appreciate us sitting in the corner of the state and and taking pleasure in watching this play out from across the Valley, it would be Liberty fans.

Was wondering how long it was going to take you.

Less than an hour old and nearly at 20 comments. Yeah, it's needs it's own thing.

Controversial yet accomplished coach from an in-state rival is leaving our state. I think it's relevant.

They are not our rival!

They might not be, but beating them at their stadium, our first win since September, and we got to close out the season on a high note by beating them....it sure felt like a rivalry win.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

He who is without sin can cast the first stone. Guy can coach, he deserves a second chance. So did Michael Vick.

He got his second chance then he started bothering SA victims, being creepy on social media with journalists and took a job where his AD was Ian McCaw. All the while still preaching his holier than thou worldview.

This sub-thread was locked by a moderator.

Basically this. He's never bothered to go through the step of learning from his experiences and showing remorse.

I'm not saying that Hugh shouldn't ever coach at a P5 team again, I'm just super glad he's not coaching here.

I found TKP after two rails from TOTS then walking back to my apartment and re-watching the 2012 Sugar Bowl. I woke up the next day with this username.

At the time he was fired I thought he should have received another chance unlike Art Briles.

But since then he:
1) Complained that he was railroaded in the coaching community for his actions (this was less than 1 coaching cycle after he was fired)
2) Had a number of allegations (with nothing confirmed) of inappropriate behavior at Briarcrest
3) He message multiple times a woman that is sexual assault victim Jane Doe 7 in a federal investigation of Liberty for the athletic department and schools mishandling of sexual assault cases to intimidate her to stop persecuting Ian McCaw, Freeze's boss. The same Ian McCaw that was found he had "created a cultural perception that football was above the rules" in responds to investigating dozens of rapes by football players at his last job.

Now Freeze is going to a university that is 1 of 6 that refuse to produce their Title IX Violations (which include sexual assault reporting).

No one is throwing stones, no one here is trying to kill him. We want people like him that have a questionable dealing with sexual assault to not be involved with teaching young men especially going into an environment that is already holding back some of the checks to curb sexual assault like Title IX Violations.

Guy can coach

Can he? He lost to Virginia Tech sooooo...

Twitter me

He was just trying to soften the blow to liberty since he already knew he was Auburn bound. Who's gonna hate a guy for leaving when he loses to...checks notes...UConn, a 2-win VT, and New Mexico state?

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

Should have lost to VT twice, but VT had a clown coach that thought an FCS kicker could make a 52 yard field goal outside as if he was Matt Stover. Kid never made one more than 30 yards. To add icing on the cake, J Ham calls a soft zone literally giving them 15 yards to throw to their best WR. I'd investigate that - except I am a VT football fan and know that if we keep playing VMI and Richmond, we will lose to them eventually. That liberty loss showed you what a total clown Justin Fuente was as a coach.

Guy coached Liberty to a W in Lane. Liberty....

Everyone is focusing on the affair and sexual assault stuff (rightfully so) but quietly leaving out the part where he and Ole Miss knowingly and willingly lied to the media and recruits to coverup pending NCAA penalties. They did it for months until after National Signing Day when the kids were stuck with Ole Miss in the pre Transfer Portal days and they couldn't leave and then Freeze left them and the university holding the bag.

HE FUCKING CATFISHED HIS OWN PLAYERS!

A piece of shit like that doesn't deserve a second chance when he knowingly betrayed the trust of the kids/athletes he's supposed to develop as a coach.

Hey liberty, I got something to help you with the butthurt:

There has to be a story behind that gif>

Ut Prosim Ad Dei Gloriam

He signs the best players in the country. There I solved the secret for everyone. I should get a book deal. His players- all of them- are better than yours- holder, punter, kicker, etc. all of them. If the best QB in the country is in hawaii and had never been to the state of Alabama, but he is the best, Saban signs him. Big Secret to his success.

1. You hit on this one. He recruits at an extremely high level, but this isn't enough to guarantee the level of success he has reached.

2. Coach up the talent: Saban is the pioneer of arguably the biggest advancement in pass defense, maybe defense period, in my lifetime (pattern matching). He still actively coaches up the DB's in practice.

3. Develop the talent: His hit rate on putting 5* players in the 1st round is ~50%, more than double the national average. Puts a lot of those guys in the second as well. His hit rate on sending blue-chippers to the NFL is also well above the national average.

4. Willingness to adapt: Has made wholesale changes to both his defense and offense to adapt to the changing environment and tides of the modern game. This is one where many, many great coaches have failed.

If he was the best at 2, 3, and 4 but had VT's roster, he's 7-5 and in the Holiday Bowl. UNC is going to beat us the next 3 years barring a miracle. Why? Mack did #1... and let the rest of the chips fall. He didn't have the illusion of coaching up plucky 3 star players and out-scheming Dabo. He went out and got better players. Saban gets the BEST players. Each and every year. Jimbo Fisher didn't forget how to draw up a 15 yard in pattern. When his 5 stars mature a bit, he is going to win big time. THE secret to Saban's success is that he applies his genius "process" to the very best talent.

It can be both. He's a good coach, showed that he could put players in the league, and so he kept getting the best players. Then it becomes self-sustaining. If 5* defensive players keep under-performing at UNC and it hurts their draft stock, they'll start to look somewhere else. You don't have the sustained recruiting success that he's had without having something to back it up.

That is true. My point was the "secret" is 5 stars vs. 2 stars. Not some wheel route nobody else runs. When coach K hit a -relative- lull at Duke, he didn't go to the lab or copy beoheims zone. No, he went and got 1 and dones for the first time. Why? They are the best players. Who gives a fuck if they need to learn to hedge a ball screen? It's easier to teach that to Kyrie Irving vs. AD Vassajlo

I mean, 7-5 with this roster is pretty damn good. If he were to beat GT, UNC, NC state, and Pitt, we'd win the coastal.

Twitter me

I would add executive processes to this list, and IMO it's #1/2. He really was the first college football coach ever to say 'I'm now a CEO, not a ball coach.' He runs the entire organization - Social Media, Donor relations, recruiting, game planning, branding, gameday experience, etc all (albeit indirectly) report to him. Because of Nick Saban, head coaches are reading leadership and business books instead of studying X's and O's all day.

Bama having better kickers than everyone else LMAO can you imagine????

Where did I lie?

My brother have you watched a Bama kicker in the clutch at any point in the last *checks notes* forever. Saban having a string of notoriously unreliable kickers is a CFB meme at this point

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

lol noted. my bad

The Achilles heel of "Bama has always been kickers. It's always confused me. You could get any kid you want and yet they always have mediocre kickers. The FG% may be high, but their kickers always fail in crucial moments.

Another white bronco? The first one didn't go too far.

If anybody ever wants to know what "being a football school" looks like, show them this.

Freeze denying that report. Hmmm. Sounds like it would be a good idea for Auburn to control that social media

@BuryHokie #ThanksFrank

On a serious note, Rich Rod is simply a JAG. His offense is old now- every team runs the zone read. Meh. Also he was at the ONE place where he could get potted plants into a school, tell them that everyone thought they were chumps, and get them to play with that chip on their shoulders. Those 4 stars at Michigan didn't buy that shit. He also thought the 5'08, 175 lb QB handing off in the shotgun would work in the big ten. Genius. He had his time in the perfect storm in a league without Miami and VT in it, and picked off Mark Richt in a bowl. That was light years ago. Total JAG- hundreds of better coaches.

Someone with the last name Briles, probably

Allegedly he's not in contention. (Just wasn't sure where to throw this yesterday)

I would hope that we as a society would place lying about gang rapes over beating TCU, yes. Maybe there is hope.

Yes because Liberty has shown itself to be on par with society as a whole when it comes to that kind of thing

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

We're talking about Liberty, where girls who report being roofied and raped get in trouble because they shouldn't have been drinking.

Kendall Briles is still on the table but my guess is he's not scummy enough to be considered by Liberty yet

P5 football, especially in the SEC West is def big business. All hires come with risk, and after Kiffin declined, I think Freeze was the best option for Auburn to improve recruiting, improve coaching, and improve chances to beat Bama and the rest of the SEC West. Pretty sure everyone at AU understands Auburn will be judged based on Freeze's record, on and off the field, from the time he joins Auburn. Much like their controversial hiring of the tainted Bruce Pearl. Freeze's history is what it is, and it is ripe for ridicule. His story at Auburn will be told starting today.

The crazy part is that LU basically has the money now to grab any coach who isn't in the top-20 highest paid. Their projected list of candidates really doesn't look that different from what VT would put together. I'm not sure how much they would throw in for the coaching staff though.

No top 40 currently employed HC is leaving to take the Liberty job.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Join us in the Key Players Club

I think you could extend that to P5

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

FWIW Liberty's AD had a presser today and said multiple P5 head coaches have strong interest

Gotta figure they are going to thro $5-6mil at anyone they hire. That's a bump for a lot of people, knowing it's a few year stop.

To you from failing hands we throw

@BuryHokie #ThanksFrank

I didn't say they would, only that Liberty has the cash to pay a good chunk of them equivalently. Their OCs and DCs being poached though? I could see that happening.

They are absolutely one of the top stepping stone jobs in football.

I am not sure what to do with my hands now

Thanks to VT football mostly, Liberty is on par if not a better program than VT at this very moment. And I know you love this- they have a lot of "resources" . Would a top 40 coach leave to take the VT job?

What is Freeze's buyout to Liberty?

3 million.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Freeze made more than Pry.

The crazy part is that LU basically has the money now

It drives me crazy how much money that school has. Maybe we should consider robbing them...

The funny thing is that I'd play pick up games where no one was a student (it was blatantly obvious). So I've already stole from them! Every little bit helps right?

After careful consideration and consultation with my wife and family, I must dispel and report as false all reports that I have accepted a position as Head Football Coach at Liberty University.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Just saw on the E$PN ticker that Liberty is targeting Chadwell from Coastal Carolina. Thamel reporting he is 'evaluating his options'

I told him Iโ€™d crawl on my hands and knees to be the DL coach at Virginia Tech. Now, all of a sudden, Iโ€™m sitting in this chair and I told him Iโ€™d still crawl on my hands and knees to work here. I just want to be here.
JC Price

Eww, why? He'd be transferring from a decent G5 school to a universally hated "independent" that's been turned away from almost every conference. Unless they're making him an offer he can't refuse (blink twice Chadwell if your life is in danger), why would you move to that shitstain of a school?

It's been said in the other thread but it seems he keeps getting passed over for P5 jobs so he's going to go get a payday from the Falwell Bank Church of Voyeurism God

I think Jamey Chadwell looks like a good coach, but am not sure if he is actually a good coach. Sure Coastal Carolina's record has turned around in the past 4 years starting when he got there, but I think he is in the same boat as Justin Fuente was at Memphis where he has a great QB (Grayson McCall, Paxton Lynch) for all 4 of those years and shockingly as the QB gets better the team wins more games. Is it coaching-related? It wasn't for Fuente.

If I were an AD, I don't think I'd hire a coach that hadn't been at his school for less than 5-6 years at a minimum. Sure I'd miss out on some winners, but I think I'd dodge many more losers. Sorry for the tangent lol

Chadwell runs a super unique and creative scheme. Advanced analytics love his offenses. Interestingly, 2 of Fuente's 3 best offenses (per SP+) occurred at VT (advanced analytics did not like Fuente's teams). Also, Chadwell would have had three back to back 11-win seasons if McCall stayed healthy this year. Fuente had a 10 win season and 9 win season.

You can't guarantee success when moving from G5 --> P5; coaching is just different. I really want to see Chadwell's system at the P5 level. I don't particularly want to see it in the ACC and I hate liberty.

This. Freeze was barely asked about the DMing the Liberty assault victim and said something along the lines of "that was a mistake" rather than "I was wrong".

He 100% is not in the same class as Briles, but that doesn't mean he isn't a despicable human being.

Freeze was barely asked about the DMing the Liberty assault victim and said something along the lines of "that was a mistake" rather than "I was wrong".

Not even! Freeze called it "an inadvertent misstep with no ill intent"

An "inadvertent misstep with no ill intent" is when your friend throws you in the pool as a joke but doesn't realize your iphone is in your pocket. There's nothing inadvertent about DMing a sexual assault victim to say that a person possibly running a cover-up is 'jesus-like' - Freeze actively made the decision to find this person on twitter and reach out to them - these two individuals have never crossed paths prior to this.

There was clearly ill intent because he was attempting to pressure an alleged sexual assault victim into dropping legal matters.

that doesn't mean he isn't a despicable human being.

Yeap

Twitter me

Good correction! I couldn't remember the exact wording other than he was full of shit.

An "inadvertent misstep" sounds like you did something that gets you in the way of end goal. Like we had an inadvertent misstep at work which caused me to be passed over for promotion and now I'm not as far ahead as I expected. Like he made a calculated decision and it back fired, there should have never been any action taken, what was he trying to do, it sounds even more nefarious they way he put it.

Just watched Freeze on Gameday. I can't remember hearing or seeing him publicly. He comes across as a bigger scumbag than his resume shows. What a creepy individual.
