November 2022 Fishing Thread

We slide into the late fall. And yet, with tempatures in the 70s, the fish are still biting. I just got back from three days of fishing in Ocean City MD. I managed around 16 togs and a couple of schoolie stripers. Between three of us, we caught 80 tautogs. 4 kept (no easy feet with a 16 inch size limit and no boat) and burned through over 9 dozen green crabs. Both stripers came on 7 inch BKDs at the end of outgoing. The only boat I saw catching stripers consistently was live lining spot out away from the bridge. They put on a show, doubling up on 24-28 inch fish for about three straight hours.

Well I'm back to entering the sunglasses world after a blunder of all blunders fishing on sunday. Went pond fishing caught a bunch on frog baits on sunday but the dog almost flipped the canoe I was in so I went to give his butt a swat with my hat and forgot my costas were resting there nd flung them into the depths of the pond. Loved my older set of reefton costas but wondering if the newer ones have changed at all in terms of longevity. Had the original ones for 6 years and loved them but was curious if newer ones are still as good?

The lenses are better than Smith, and still the best in the industry IMHO. Smith's are lighter and the rubber gasket nose things not come off like on the Costas. Costa has started trying a new design called the Pro, and they do it for most of their models. It's a different nose piece. Seems to work pretty well from the pair I have. Haven't worn them for a month straight yet. Costa still has a great return policy as well, and just sent me a new pair of Blackfins after the nose fell off my old ones.

I am supposed to be back at the Cape today, but alas, I am not. Hurricane Nicole is messing up the weather in a bad way there. I'll head down this weekend when it slicks out. In the meantime, it's earring tying season for me. I haven't fished the salt since end of September. I'm losing my mind.

Y'all be careful! No Florida man headlines outta you😂

Warning- Filter lost.

"Look at this... This is just spectacular.... These people are losing their minds"

LOL...I am totally capable of that.

Yesterday's attempt at being OLD Florida Man was digging a trench and putting in a corrugated pipe for a friend whose rented first floor garage Apt flooded in Ian. I looked at it when it flooded and the front yard/driveway slopes toward the front of the house while the back yard slopes toward the back of the house. The double patio doors opening into the family room (formerly a garage) are at the bottom of a "bowl" served only by a French drain behind the house. The drain is an elegant solution IF it doesn't rain too much but when 10+ inches of Ian rain fell in a hurry the drain capacity was instantly exceeded and the bowl filled up for several hours, flooding two rooms. So during cleanup I advised the owner to trench through the raised portion of the back yard to a low back corner which drains off site to a ROW...it would be inexpensive to do and could be sloped to make it part of the landscape. But with Nicole looming it hadn't been done yet. So...

Luckily I encountered only gray sandy "soil" and no serious roots. I had 40' long trench dug and pipe installed in about 3 hours. And I still have all of my digits and most of my blood! Now, did I get the elevation and slope right? Guess we'll know tomorrow.

["Old Florida Man digs drainage ditch, floods house!")

no storm issues for us and friend didn't flood!

1) Stay safe Florida folks

2) Selling some extra gear. I have a 7 ft GX Inshore G Loomis Heavy (rated 1/4-1oz) spinning and a Teramar 7ft 15-30 extra fast action conventional (good for throwing live eels at cobia) that would look great paired with a Tranx or a Lexa. I would take $90 for either one from someone local to Richmond (pick up around Mechanicsvillle.

Also, if someone is beinging in surfcasting and wants an entry level surf spinning reel, I have an older Daiwa Emcast 5500 that has barely been used. Would unload it for $35.

Awfully quiet on here....

I fished Cape Lookout last weekend for three days. It was cold, 39-45 each day with water temps pushing 70. Caught a few small specks tossing a jig along a sod bank. Ran my boat 50 plus miles along the beach. Caught a few blues and saw a Mola Mola under my boat. No albies of any sort. Only saw two drum in a creek and they wouldn't cooperate. I was happy as a clam that Pretty Fly ran well. Apparently the Albies finally showed up the last few days.

Also heard of a good speck trout bite in the mouth of the Rappahannock.

My December will consist of 10-14 hour days tying earrings. I might get a day or two of fishing in, we shall see.

Glad the boat is up and running. Outside of sea mullet down on the Topsail piers, I haven't heard much of anything anywhere.

I am debating a February trip to Navarre Pier down on the panhandle to try to get a blackfin on spinning gear. Trying to rank the following three things and decide which I want to do the most:

- meet and get an autograph from Don Mattingly
-go to the first two rounds of the NCAA MBB tourney in Greensboro
- go to Navarre

Navarre seems like a sick spot. Sailfish, tarpon, tuna off a pier. Just insanity.

Can't spell DBU without Bud

I fished there once and you could see overslot drum cruising the inner bar. But, I couldn't get them to eat live cigar minnows in the shallows. Off the end, they were getting bonitos on the same set ups they use for blackfins- 8 foot spinning rods that were about the equivilant of the old 8 foot Teramar rated 15-30, not the cobia set up, paired with their Van Staals. 1oz to 1.5 oz jighead and a 7 inch or 6 inch fluke, but that bite was over by 9AM each day.

Arch Bracher (captain of the Pelican in Oregon Inlet) spends the entire winter down there.

Mola Mola under my boat

These are really cool fish to see. I had a "teenager" Mola Mola hang around my boat once about 25 miles out from Sebastian Inlet, FL. He just stayed around and let us pet him. He was about 4 ft long, so definitely young. Cool experience.

I have been fishing and pedaling a lot more than catching this fall. With water temps getting into winter time trends, I finally found some fish near where I had found some last winter. Biggest trout 23.5" so still looking for a citation this fall

Can't spell DBU without Bud

Been breaking in the rebuilt setup and trying to figure out winter speckled trout fishing since rockfish have been poor so far but only have been catching pretty views and grass. Water temps are 50ish in the mobjack and al thanksgiving weekend we tried all the tactics I knew of from drifting baits over potholes, to dragging baits over the ledges and looking for warmer outflow but no fish were brought to hand. Even tried hitting some dock lights but no bites. Might be time of the year to simply work on mounting a trolling motor and prepping for spring time. Cant complain anytime out fishing with family is time well spent.

Would love any tips on winter specks that I might be doig wrong. Tried drifting a triage of baits at once across ledges, oyster bars, pot holes and channel edges and one deeper grassy area. Used a mirror lure in mardi gras, popping cork with gulp shrimp on the end 3-4 feet off the cork, and a 3/8 jighead with a zman shrimp to cover the bottom depths. Let the current or wind dictate the drifts but went as slow as I could twitching all three rods as we went slowly. Are specks more in the bigger water this time of year?

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

They are farther back up the rivers on muddy bottoms with some good depth 8-10+ feet. It really helps to have sidescan with your depth finder so you can find bait and fish.

Can't spell DBU without Bud

Unfortunately I dont have sidescan but still a nice depthfinder and gps setup. We must have been too shallow and out too far then we didnt go too far up creeks since most in the East river are shallower creeks. I was looking for more 4-6 foot depths thinking they would be near some mud or sandy stuff where the sun was warming it up but no cigars where we went.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Yep, the east isn't setup the best for winter trout. They will be in 4-6 feet but you want a deeper channel nearby that is going to help stabilize the water temp

Can't spell DBU without Bud

Yeah we started to figure as much by the 4th or 5th trip out with no bites, maybe next time we will wander to other parts of the mobjack and see if we can find more ideal water. We didnt see many other anglers though even out around new point when we popped into the bay compared to years of yesterday when people would be out rockfishing over thanksgiving break we saw very little traffic.

Just in case anyone was interested - we've had some sturgeon carcasses wash up on the beach here on Topsail Island, mostly on the north side. First of all, I had no idea we had those here... secondly, the conservation people think they are getting caught in fishing nets.

Is coronavirus over yet?

Pre humans, sturgeon were all over the place on the east coast. Yes, it is most likely the drag or drop nets they set out along the beach this time of year. They catch everything that swims by and what isn't allowed to be kept is "released," dead or alive. Whether any of it lives is debatable. The netters in NC are an old guard that has always done it this way, and refuse to change. They would net every fish in the ocean if they could sell 'em for a dollar. NC has the worst net laws in the country, allowing the most carnage. Virginia is second. Alaska still uses gill nets for many of it's salmon fisheries, but there are so few people there and so much more water and land, it makes much less of a dent in the populations.

My friend said gill nets were banned this summer on the lower end of Hatteras and behind Ocracoke because a sea turtle was caught and killed in one. The fish population exploded from what I was told, even after just a few months of no nets. Maybe the sturgeon will have the same effect on getting the nets more harshly regulated.

There are no saltwater game fish in northeast Florida right now.

Beautiful afternoon, moderate east breeze, tides not great but not awful. Two dink trout, no bait in the water, and tellingly, no boats! I ran from Vilano north to Pine Island...25+ mile round trip. I saw two offshore sized CCs anchored in the intracoastal soaking bait, and one 20' CC with two guys headed north as I came in. That was it! Typically there will be a handful of boats in each of the main creeks and several in the intracoastal. But me, two eagles, and a handful of dolphins had it all to ourselves today; literally. I think Nicole was the final straw for this year and I think I'm going try some new territory to the south.

I know we're in December now but all of my good boat juju for the big boat wore off at once this morning. Blew out a sidewall on a tire and simultaneously snapped a leaf spring. Motor wouldn't turn over.... I've got continuity between my main pos and negative leads on my motor guess I'm done fishing for the winter

Welcome to the FML boat club! As you know, I feel your pain. At this point I've got an extra set of spare wheels. Leaf springs are not hard to change out, I'm sure you can do that on your own.

As for your motor, triple check your connections. Mine have gotten to the point that a wire might move and that makes all the difference.

Yeah I've been tossing around the idea of taking it somewhere but I'll end up doing it myself as always.

The motor issue is 95% sure is a faulty ignition. I shouldn't get continuity on my tester between pos and neg and it wasn't even hooked to the battery but doesn't do it when. The key isn't in the on position so it's something in my dash I think.

Ended up doing the suspension myself wasnt bad at all just getting through rusted nuts which was mainly taken care of with my angle grinder and a cutting disc.

My tire lugs are horrible so new hubs are probably next along witb two new tires. Need new bunk supports and my axles probably only have another season or two in them. About to go knock off some rust and hit it with cold galvanizing spray and see if I can stretch the life a bit. What a nightmare.

(add if applicable) /s

Hubs are easy to do and not expensive, luckily. Axles are also pretty easy to do but they are expensive. I'd recommend getting heaviest load range tires you can.

Now that the suspension is stable, went ahead and tried to diagnose the continuity....unplugged 1 item from the main harness at a time until I lost continuity and it looks like its the main key switch so. I've ordered a cheapo one on amazon to test that theory. If it works I'll think about replacing it with an oem switch or just run the china one until it dies.

Update on Omega Protein and their raping of the Chesapeake Bay....

https://www.saltwatersportsman.com/news/toothless-memorandum-wont-stop-o...

I went to the public comment hearing on behalf of Menhaden Defenders. Omega busses in all of their employees and they get to the VMRC early and take up all of the seats. Anyone showing up on time has to stand outside and wait their turn to speak. I stood outside for 3.5 hours before I was finally let in, at which point the committee said they were only on page 6 out of a list of 20 pages of speakers. This was supposed to be 3 hours long. At 4 hours, I left, because I couldn't stand there all day. Apparently my name was called on my drive back to Richmond.

The committee might as well have had bottles of lube on their desk so they could give better hand jobs to Omega. Glenn Youngkin is bought and paid for by Omega. He removed two people from the committee in the past year for no good reason other than Omega asked him to and he replaced them with people from Reedville who are related to (same fucking last name!) and buy bait from Omega. The two he removed are Capt. Chris Newsome and another woman who works with the Chesapeake Bay foundation who obviously would have brought some sensibility to the panel. It's a bunch of fucking bullshit.

There is a guy from Maryland bringing a lawsuit against the VMRC. Hopefully, it works. We need as many anglers as possible to stand up to Omega per Menhaden Defenders, but no doubt its a David versus Goliath scenario and menhaden and striped bass are on the losing end of the stick, meaning rec anglers and guides are too.

Yes, I realize it is politics, but this is too important not to share to the many of us who fish in the Bay.

Oh, I totally get that.

For better or worse, professionally I'm a federal ESA expert. Best shot at limiting Omega is a federal handle, not state, for the very reasons you've explained. I'm assuming if there was a federal nexus, someone would have found it long ago. That would moot Va politics.

Absent that, I'd be publicizing the cost, in real documented dollars, to sportfishing and recreational boating at every sporting goods store and boat dealer in VA, MD, and DE...and a handful of I-95 billboards. It must dwarf Omega's contribution to the local economy. "Is Omega netting your job?" or something like that could be a very effective PR campaign. For every job Omega supports, how many do they eliminate? It's probably at least an order of magnitude.

And you don't need to go to a hearing to see public officials, you need to go direct drive to their offices. If possible, take them out on your boat. Put them on a big fish. Show them what you spend on tackle, gas, maintenance and repairs. Show them your job is as important to you as anyone else's job is to them. For this exercise, forget the global ecosystem angle, that's for Disney and Netflix...all politics is local. How does it impact you personally.

Those are all great points, thank you!

A broad scale guides association, marine industries (marinas, waterfront users) group, and marine manufacturers (boats)/retailers (dealers) group would seemingly make a very effective alliance.

I have suggested that. Saltwater Guides Association is a great one with good publicity but of course, the guy that runs it, who I am friendly with, doesn't feel that Omega is as big of an issue that it is. He wants to focus on the rec side of anglers killing too many fish. So we can't even get the groups to agree on which issue to focus on.

Alright y'all - looking for Christmas gift for my BIL. Since he moved to Florida 2 years ago, he's gotten really into it. Fishes from the beach a couple times each week usually early morning or late night (when it's dark out), goes deep water every month or two. Doesn't do any competition fishing (yet). I don't know much about what he usually catches, but lives about an hour north of west palm. Always fishes on the Atlantic.

He's a big falcons and GT fan, so I was thinking maybe some fishing swag with his teams? Or if there's anything super useful tools/accessories/stocking stuffers y'all like, let me know. Budget is $75, but could do a collection of smaller things or something.

Twitter me

I know nothing about surf fishing or deepwater fishing; but I do know you can catch snook at night from the bank in that area around bridge pilings and such. Back2VT is on the other coast but would likely know how to do that. That kind of budget would get you some tackle to get started.

I know he does catch a lot of snook. When he goes deep sea, it's a lot of porgy and snapper, I think.

Twitter me

if he catches a lot of snook, it's easy to understand why he has really gotten into it

With a $75 budget, rods and reels would be out. Tackle bags are costly. Perhaps sun blocker clothes?
