Week 5 Other Games Thread

I thought I'd start this for anyone watching Shane. Why in the hell go for an inside kick in the first quarter after converting a 2pt conversion. State must have pissed him off or something.

Plenty of other games to watch after we go down 21-0 in the 1Q

Glad we're out of cupcake season. That is a great slate of football.

On another note, man has TKPs mood towards this season took a hard shift this week from Enter Sandman to:

If you feel the leather in your hand let it rip.

Thankfully my bar was the floor so I'm just along for the ride. My heart and liver needed a break and there's been some good football to watch so far this year

But was the roof the ceiling?

We were leading 3-0... until I read this comment.

Maybe I need to stop reading.

Braxton Burmeister isn't really lighting the world on fire but SDSU is beating Boise 13-0 just before half.

Just got drilled in the dome. I feel for that young man. He been through a meat grinder. (No targeting - I don't understand the rule anymore, unrelated)

I'm still figuring this out.

I now believe that Fuente and Cornelson are perfectly Mediocre. 5* QB, they'll make him look average, 2* QB you better belive he will look amazingly average, but that's huge for a 2* QB.

On ESPN2, Buford (GA) just won 23-3.... their starting QB Dylan Wittke is our 2023 QB commit, but he was pulled for the backup in the second half.

I didn't watch any of this game, but it appears that the benching of our 2023 QB commit has caused quite the panic in the recruiting-centric portion of the VT fanbase.

As far as I know, he was always viewed as developmental prospect, and he is in a strange situation where he plays for one of the best public high schools in the country in terms of talent and on-field football quality, but he is also probably the weak link of their offense.

Tulane Houston going to OT!

This is Houston's third OT game already this season. Tulane is statistically WAY overmatched and had a chance to go for two and end it, but elected to kick and go to OT.

Tulane won in OT with their 3rd string QB...

They were down in TOP 37-23 minutes and they thought OT gave them a better chance than the quick 2-point conversion. That's crazy!

It's funny

I saw Houston fans on Reddit earlier in the week complaining about Dana's handling of things in OT. Mainly that he opts to receive the ball first and it ends up biting him in the ass... Low and behold, that very thing ended up happening last night.

I watched some of the UCLA-Washington game as I was laying in bed last night, but I cut it off and went to sleep when UCLA went up big in the start of the 2nd half. I saw the score this morning and it appears Washington almost made an impressive comeback. The last time this happened, I woke up and saw the score of the Washington State-UCLA game went into absolute bonkers mode in 2019 after I went to sleep thinking it was over. The comeback fell short this time, but PAC12 after Dark has always provided some great entertainment to those who stay up for it.

Im not sure what the design is on the Ole Miss helmets but it looks pretty cool.

Doing something with Realtree. If that's camo, I'll kiss your ass, but whatever.

The first time I saw it, the camera was zoomed in on one player and I thought it was a paint smudge.

Oklahoma getting absolutely destroyed early on at TCU.

I feel pretty good about OU longterm under Venables, at least in terms of being consistently good, not sure about their ceiling, especially after they join the SEC, but the offense/QB they chose is very boom/bust and it's going to take a year or two to fix the defense into a Venables-level unit. It took a couple years at Clemson as well.

There's the Flowers/Jurkovec connection BC's been looking for. Incredible body balance there around the 5yd line as well.

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

Not sure what VT needs to do, but 30 years with a mostly inept offense is disheartening (I'm being a tad melodramatic of course. We've had some decent ones sprinkled throughout). I would love for us to find an offense that is even half as good as most of the ones we watch on saturdays.

Is coronavirus over yet?

I don't know how it would play longterm in regards to setting up the program for sustained success, but that's part of the reason I've always found myself slightly swayed in the direction of going for someone like Kiffin. He brings instant offense and has transfer appeal.

Overall, I am very happy with the Pry hire in regards for having a vision to rebuild the roster and set us up longterm, but obviously time will tell.

I'm certainly excited about the Pry hire, particularly in the respect that he's genuinely a "VT guy". I think he was a great hire. But to your point, time will tell... It will be interesting to see how loyal he is if we navigate through the entire season with no progress on the offensive side of the ball (I wouldn't expect him to fire people after year 1, but I would expect some significant changes in how things are approached). Both Fuente and Beamer were loyal to a fault and it ended up being the undoing of them both. And I think if everyone was brutally honest, Frank struck gold in Bud Foster. Had Bud never been part of the staff it's likely very few outside of the VT program would even know who Frank Beamer is.

Is coronavirus over yet?

first, the program would need to stop treating offense as an afterthought. Jury is firmly out on whether or not they have, Rudolph aside.

update: looks like that's a no

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Braxton Burmeister, Ryan Willis, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

Giving up 27 to TCU in a quarter...

It just means more.

That hit on Gabriel was pretty rough.

Big XII refs gonna be Big XII refs...

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

That total phantom fair catch call was pretty hard to believe.

And right after the blatantly not-called pass interference, too.

For anyone who did not see it and is interested, this is the play where the officials claimed the TCU returned called for a fair catch.

TCU Oklahoma...very entertaining...just need a fight to break out!

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

I feel like I'm watching the VT defense from a couple years ago with this Oklahoma group. Man they look horrible. Coverage bad, tackling bad, bad angles, lots of penalties ...

Also, anybody know why Kentucky-Ole Miss is on both ESPN and SECN? Is it because it just means moreβ„’, or was there a rescheduling/cancellation that I missed?

Can we create an offensive targeting play call where the Kentucky QB lowers his head into the defenders and then fumbles. Those announcers suck thinking it was targeting.

Love seeing Kensucky lose.

Is coronavirus over yet?

Lol Kentucky just blew it

Lane Kiffin couldn't give Kentucky any credit at all.

He's great as long as he's not coaching your team.

Not a damn soul is feeling bad for poor old A&M maybe they'll finally drop out of the rankings after this

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

I made a pledge not to pick against Arkansas this year and broke it this week. I messed up.

I think you had the right idea man. They won by 23 without Bryce for over half the game + Arkansas onside kick and Bama giving them the ball at their own 3. If Bryce played uninterrupted into the 3rd he probably doesn't even make it to the 4th in a major blowout.

All the underlying numbers said Bama was poised to win big.

Wallace Wade holds 40004 people; I think I seen the 4.

uva - the taint of the ACC

At least our fans show up for 3 quarters.

Tyrod did it Mikey, Tyrod did it!!

The ACC likes arenas.

Wow, I hope no one has to rely on, "I was at the Duke game" as their alibi. Not a single corroborating witness.

Um who does Mizzou think they are?

Their 52-24 victory over LaTech has given them an abundance of confidence against teams named "Bulldogs".

The fuck is Uga doing?

Flipped over to WVU-TX.

Apparently scary injury to cj Donaldson

Missed the actual play can't offer any more.

I'm still figuring this out.

I can't recall how many times I've seen the ESPN commercial complaining about how ESPN is no longer on dish network, but I'm just laughing because the people that need to see this commercial can't.

Good lord the Mizzou kicker has an NFL leg... and the size of an NFL DE

Of course Pitt is gonna lose and we're gonna get an even bigger butt whopping next week with an angry Pitt and angrier Narduzzi

Yes,that's the Hokie Bird riding a camel. Why'd you ask?

Pitt on their way to their annual head scratching loss. There goes our chances for next week.

And they just compared it to when GT beat us in the burg with their backup qb!

So that's nice?

I'm still figuring this out.

man this season would be amazing if we were half way decent to watch. Six upsets of ranked teams today, UGa almost went down too. Another 3 ranked teams lost. It's going to be a mess of a season and I love almost every bit of it.
