Voted and will continue each day. It's cool that this tradition is so universally appreciated as one of the best

Well I am not sure when it started, so I have three times already today. Incognito window for the win.

I know we are VT fans and should be partial to them. But seriously, how is Iowa fans saluting the kids in the children's hospital not up there? Was it left off the voting list because the people running it knew that should take the top spot?

Recovering scientist working in business consulting

Agreed. That is one of THE best things in football. Ever.

May have been excluded because of its recent inception. They may have included a time horizon for "tradition." It's great, but it hasn't been around as long as the others. Sandman wouldn't be high on this list in 2002.

Because it's corndog?

Somewhere on my bucket list is a corn dog at the Iowa state fair. I drool at the thought, however unlikely I am to realize that bliss on a stick.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

when i think of the iowa st fair, i imagine a fried, battered pork chop that you dip in a gravy/corn syrup slurry.

Is traveling to state fairs eating corn dogs not a hobby?

I guess it can be.
I just can't bring myself to eat corndogs and I'm not a big fan of pork chops either.
I'm just messing with them anyways, having some fun. I

I know someone who makes a great career of it. Special guest star of the turkey legs.

Recovering scientist working in business consulting

Yeah, I'd try that for sure. But that corn dog would be first. Preferably the frying oil would be a day or two from needing changed for that dynamite umami of all the food fried that week. Hey, y'only live once, eh?

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

y'only live once, eh?

Only once, and eating like that, that one time isn't very long.

Stick with your nuts, twigs and berries if you will, but I doubt one iconic corn dog will be the final nail in my coffin, and even if so, l'll shuffle off this mortal coil with greasy lips and a smile on my face. I've made it to 73 eating the occasional corn dog, pork chop and yes, even that horrible bacon.
Genetics might have a bit to do with it, as I've already lost friends who definitely ate better than I do, and nobody is promised tomorrow.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

My diet does not please or impress any doctors, I just felt like joshing a bit. I hit the classic "can't tell tone in text" trap.

Cheers! 🥓🥓🥓

Of course, and I was just funnin' back. I took it as it was offered and thanks for the reply.

I tend to agree, but hopefully no one sees you from a far and gives you astern slap on the back as you go to take your first glorious bite. Dying by choking on a full corn dog projecting out of your mouth is not how I want to be remembered.

You know they have, but I doubt that would be my demise. I'm less likely to go to an Iowa state fair than I am to do many other things that could get me kilt. I can easily imagine my end coming from a careless or stupid move ending in "Awwww...shi..."

Wholeheartedly agree with you here! If you "eat healthy" -sure you get extra years ,,but WHICH years do you get? Not the FUN younger years but the ones at the end when you're old and feeble. I'm not reckless in y actions but I'm gonna enjoy what I eat - to quote Daffy Duck from "consequences schmonsequences as long as I'm rich!"

From the 2018 VT-uva game-"This is when LEGENDS are made!"

Just keep this in mind. Few worse things than hospital emergency rooms. why? well if you go there, it means you are likely ill, broken bone, trauma/accident, poisonous snake bite, etc. and on a weekend/off hours, or your doctor is booked 3 months out. Soooo to add fuel to that fire- IF you make it past a nurse doing triage and a fly by visit by a doctor for pain meds, the next people you see are residents. What do residents hate doing? Calling the primary doctor/surgeon in and ordering an operating room. So, they are going to give you lidocaine, oxy or some other non OR meds and brutally treat you. This CAN happen in your young glory years- is my point. So don't let it get that far. Don't get sick to the point that a first year resident is putting a tube down your throat after they give you extra strength tylenol.

Something something here for a good time not a long one.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

I can vouch for the fried pork chop sandwich at the Iowa State Fair. I did not dip it anything, but if that was available anywhere near me I would find a reason to drive there. Dinner plate sized pounded chop dripping in juices and fry grease on a standard sized bun.....

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

A Midwest diner staple, good with a nice ground mustard, German style, not spicy, but not the yellow runny stuff.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

IMHO, Jump Around is just...okay.
Yeah it's exciting, but there are way cooler traditions in college football than that. And I'm not just saying this with my o&m glasses on. I'd vote for the following above jump around (no particular order):
1. Enter Sandman (duh)
2. Penn St White Out (chills every time)
3. Iowa Wave (heart warming and unique)
4. Take Me Home Country Roads (it's cool, don't hate me)
5. Bama and Dixieland Delight (my inner redneck loves this)
6. Ralphie's run (it's a damn Buffalo running)

I will say Howard's Rock is most overrated. Touching hard things isn't my thing...not that there's anything wrong with that...

"GO BACK TO YOUR ROOM LITTLE BROTHER, THE CUP IS COMIN’ ON HOME!”

Went to a Penn State whiteout a few Novembers ago. I was severely disappointed, the frigid cold might've hindered it but I wasn't impressed.

As bad as I hate to say it Rocky Top and running through the T at Tennessee is a good tradition - on the record here as not being a fan of the song.

Tyrod did it Mikey, Tyrod did it!!

That's disappointing...every time I've seen it on TV it's looked electric. Like old days of Sandman. 2019 white out vs Michigan was insane.

Yeah...I hate Tennessee but can't really disagree with that tradition. The orange and white checker they do is also pretty cool.

EAT SHIT, PITT

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

I think the tradition of saying Eat Shit Pitt is 100x better than playing sweet caroline.

Hot take, but I think it's just low rent. I dislike Pitt as much as the next guy, but that's just trashy.

"Yes I am going to have favorites. My favorites are high production and low maintenance players, coaches, and staff." - JMFF

Possibly unpopular counterpoint: trashy has its place, especially in sports.

If you think eat shit Pitt is bad, definitely never attend a European soccer match. College football's trashiest is JV compared to the chants you'll hear.

And before it come up, I absolutely do not care if there are kids nearby who might hear. They're just words, and they'll hear them eventually. Personally, I'll make an effort to dial it back, but from experience, If there's a child near me at a Hokie game, they will learn some new words, or at least inventive ways to use them. Some of the adults probably will too.

One fo the funniest things I ever heard at a sporting event came from the mouth of a 9 year old sitting next to me at a Caps game back a few years. Shulltz was carrying the puck up the wall and just lost it. This kid yells out "Shultz, you're a friggin tomato can!" Always learning/hearing something new.

If the average tech fan is somewhere between LOLUVa fan pretentiousness and WVU fan trashiness, you have to respect that a chunk of the bell curves of fan attitudes will overlap significantly. I've seen Tech fans dress in blazers and ties. I've seen tech fans burn couches. There will be a lot of tech fans who like "Eat Shit Pitt"

We almost certainly also have fans who would burn couches while wearing a blazer and tie.

What I love about Tech, and what I think makes us unique compared to a lot of places, is our fan base is hard to put in one box, or fit in one stereotype. If a person were to throw out an adjective, you probably wouldn't have to think very hard to be able to name or describe a Hokie you know that it applies to, but also 5 others it doesn't.

It is also West Virginia and it fits so perfectly with their culture.

Ahhh how could I have forgotten that, that's classic!!! 10/10

"GO BACK TO YOUR ROOM LITTLE BROTHER, THE CUP IS COMIN’ ON HOME!”

Have you ever seen Jump Around in person? I would rank Enter Sandman above it, but it's pretty damn cool.

You're 100% right about Clemson. Extremely overrated and anticlimactic.

Outside it's night time, but inside it's LeDay

Admittedly, I haven't. I've seen it on tv, just doesn't impress me that much. It's a song that's played at every game with a PA system and people will start...jumping around...to me it's just not that unique.

"GO BACK TO YOUR ROOM LITTLE BROTHER, THE CUP IS COMIN’ ON HOME!”

Honestly, you could say pretty much the same thing about ours if you're never seen it in person. Jump Around at Camp Randall is a very different vibe than Enter Sandman, but still really really cool. Highly recommend going to a Wisconsin game. Also highly recommend living in Madison.

How about no.

This was my backyard in Madison. Winter was my favorite time of year to live there.

Outside it's night time, but inside it's LeDay

I can't stand the cold but being able to go skate any time would be amazing.

Sweet jump.

Hey, it looks like my kind of place!

Recovering scientist working in business consulting

At any other sporting event that plays Enter Sandman, they don't jump and scream like we do. And if they do, it's because they got it from us.

Also highly recommend living in Madison.

To each their own, NRV is about as far north as I'm willing to move 😂 winter is the worst outside of hockey.

"GO BACK TO YOUR ROOM LITTLE BROTHER, THE CUP IS COMIN’ ON HOME!”

There's about to be hockey in the NRV. Wytheville is getting a team.

As a new hockey fan, and NRV resident, I hope it succeeds!!

Got a buddy starting his first year with the Motor City Rockers and they play at Wythville this season. Looking forward to driving out and seeing the game

Would love to go to our match-up with them in, *checks future schedules* 2032. Will need to set a reminder for that one, not sure what I'm doing that year.

Wonder if Camp Randall gives senior citizen discounts? I'll qualify by then!

From the 2018 VT-uva game-"This is when LEGENDS are made!"

The Iowa wave makes me feel guilty voting for Tech. Feels like that should win in a landslide.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

The ESPN production for I think Clemson's home game entrance vs FSU 2013 was the most bloated thing I have ever seen. Seemed to drag on forever and really anti-climatic. Team comes out of locker room, files onto buses, drives halfway around stadium, files off of buses, runs down hill and touches rock, balloons. Then they proceeded to get completely stomped.

I hate balloon releases with a passion

Danny is always open

I was at that game. Was underwhelmed by the entrance.

I was at that game as well. The atmosphere deflated pretty quickly.

Absolutely! Give me the chance to vote on most overrated and I would smash Clemson's button.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

My only question about the Iowa wave (awesome thing to do) is how long does it take to make a tradition, my understanding is that this only has happened for a couple of years.

There probably is a threshold somewhere, but that's probably just to ensure that any recent "tradition" sticks around for a significant period of time.

Regardless of how long they've been doing this, I think it's gonna stick, because it's awesome. You can call it a tradition now in my book.

"Yes I am going to have favorites. My favorites are high production and low maintenance players, coaches, and staff." - JMFF

I'm a little biased having gone to UF and it's more of a new tradition but singing Tom Pettys won't back down arm in arm heading into the 4th quarter is very cool

You had me at Tom Petty, rest his soul.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

Army/navy has to be up there. I'd love to see the Hawaii do the Ha'a too.

But Enter Sandman is easily better than any other entrance or musical event.

Army/Navy is the best tradition in college football, because the whole damn thing is just bigger than the game.

Outside of that, Enter Sandman is probably the top, because its at the start of the game and the venue goes batshit. When VT is good, it sets the tone for what the opponent is to expect the rest of the day.

Clemson's Running Down the Hill is probably the most overrated in all of sports. I'm sorry, I've never found what is exciting about that. It bores me every single time.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

I loved going to Army Navy and seeing all those videos and just everything that the game day expierence is just bigger than the game itself, it's a completely different experience than any other game I've been too.

So what I'm learning is that jumping is the best, and most fun, and makes for the best traditions?

correct

Much like the Dan Snyder franchise in Washington rallying around and emphasizing the tragic death of Sean Taylor as their only "accomplishment" the past 15 years, I think it's time for VT football to be recognized for winning games, ACC titles, as opposed to a 30 year old Metallica song. I often draw the same parallels. - Taylor's death (as sick as that is) is what the Commanders are "known for" now- ring of honor, statues, streets named after a guy that played 4 seasons in the NFL. You only do that when you have nothing else to "celebrate" or honor as a franchise. Let's be know for something other than a song please.

You know this poll has NOTHING to do with on the field accomplishments, just the extra stuff that goes on during a college game. That's all this is, with limited parameters.

What about doing the Hokie Pokie between the 3rd and 4th quarters? /s

na, I ruined that my wedding night when I told everyone that me and the wife were going to go do some hokie pokie, now no one I knows wants to use that phrase.

Why did we stop doing it? Was a tradition that went well beyond any others we kept.

It's been moved to a sometimes thing at the end of halftime so they can do the "fan engagement" giveaways and have the trivia guy wander the stadium and interview a drunk coed.

I mean, why not sing a song about an entirely different state as if it was written specifically for your state?

Is coronavirus over yet?

Any list with Howard's Rock on the best side is a bad list. Dotting the I at Ohio State is better than this. The Tennessee T is better than the stupid rock and jog down a hill. FSU burning spear is better than the rock and country roads.
