2022-23 Hokie Hoops Statistical Notes: Volume the Ocho

The Men's Team

Back from the Bahamas and wouldn't you know it, the Hokies win both games I was away, but lost the game immediately before I left and right after I got home.

Am I gonna need to set up a gofundme to get me on more cruises so we can win some more games? I'm willing to beg.

Back to reality, CMYBall now has 67 career wins at Tech, to pass Monk Younger for 9th All-Time, and moves into a 3-way tie for best four year start with Don DeVoe and Seth Greenberg.

Scoring

Hokies made major offensive strides this four-game set averaging 82 ppg over the last 3 and 74 over the last 4.

Leading the squad for the second frame in a row was Grant Basile (19.75 ppg), followed by Hunter Cattoor (15.25) and Sean Pedulla (12.25) in the double figures club. Justyn Mutts (9.5) and MJ Collins (6.25) rounded out the starters, while Kidd (5.5), Camden (4 ppa), and Poteat (3.5) rounded out all scorers.

Curious is the absence of Darius Maddox who failed to score despite playing in two games. I don't see any news of injury, so I'm wondering if CMY is keeping him out to get the 5-18 over the last four games out of his head.

While I'm seeing some amazing improvement from the bench bigs, I really would hope we could find a more consistent #3 guard.

Rebounding
Basile remains at the top here, averaging 7.75 boards per game, joined by Mutts (5.5) John Camden (4 rpa) in pulling down at least two per half. Cattoor and Pedulla (3.25 each), Kidd (2.75), and Collins (2.25) all cleaned the glass at least once per half, while Maddox (1.5 rpa) and Poteat (0.25) grabbed the remainder.

Assists
The Hokies finished this frame with an ATO of 69 (nice):50, but with a peculiar penchant for pilfering, uncommon so far this season, the AATO of the team is astonishing 69:22. For those keeping track at home, that's an average of 7 steals per game, which would be good for 128th nationally; well above our current 301st ranking which already includes those games.

Most assists goes to Mutts (23). Most turnovers to Pedulla (13). Best ATO (min 3 games played) is Cattoor (15:6).

AATOs are as follows:
Cattoor 15:1
Mutts 23:5
Pedulla 12:3
Basile 11:5
Camden 3:0
Kidd 3:2
Collins: 2:2
Maddox: 0:1
Poteat: 0:3

Experience/Depth
Nine Hokies saw playing time, led by Cattoor (38), Pedulla (32.75), Basile/Mutts (32.25), Collins (28.75), Camden (20), Kidd (14.75), Maddox (13), and Poteat (5.5)

Next Window
Up next the Hokies have UVA, who previously defeated the Hokies in Charlottesville and a BC team that got some serious home cooking from the refs over winter break and then a road trip to South Bend for the first matchup against the Irish. As of this writing, the Irish are a game behind the Hokies in the ACC standings, don't score as much, allow more than they score, don't shoot well, don't rebound well, don't move the ball as effectively, and will not have a winning record by the time they play the Hokies.

Prediction
I'm feeling 2-1 with a close loss to UVA, but 3-0 if the team is really gelling.

The Women's Team

Coach Kenny Brooks' team went 2-1 over this window, improving Brooks to 141 wins, 17 shy of Bonnie Henrickson's mark for 2nd best among women's basketball coaches.

Currently the Hokies sit 0.5 games back of the all-elusive double bye.

Scoring
Liz Kitley leads the Hokies again, this time with 16 ppg. Joining her in the double figures ranks were Taylor Soule (14.67), Kayana Traylor (13.33), and Georgia Amoore (11). Cayla King (5.67 was the only other Hokie who averaged a point per quarter over the frame, while D'Asia Gregg (3.67) and Ashley Owusu (2.67) averaged a point per half.

Rebounding

Once again, Kitley averaged a double-double (10.67) over the window. Only Soule (5.67) averaged more than a board per quarter. Gregg (3.67), Amoore (2.67), King (2.33), and Owusu (2) averaged at least a board per half. Traylor (1.33) pulled down the remainder of the rebounds.

Assists
As a team, the Hokies ATO finished at 45:41 in this set, adjusted down to a more respectable 45:27.

Most assists: Amoore (11), Most turnovers: Kitley (10), Best ATO: King (4:2). Best AATO: Traylor (6:1). 7 of the 8 players who contributed minutes finished an AATO in the positive. Only Kitley (5:7) failed to achieve that mark.

Experience/Depth
Amoore is once again at the top of this metric, averaging 38.33 minutes per game. Also in the 30 club are Kitley (34.67), Traylor (31), and Soule (30). Averaging at least half a game played are King (26.67) and Gregg (23). Owusu (13.67) was the only other player to average at least a minute per quarter played, while Taylor Geiman contributed the remaining 2.67 mpg

Next Window
Like the men, the women will spend 2 of the next 3 in the Cassell. Syracuse will be the first team to visit over the next few. The Orange are in the bottom half of the ACC and feature a balanced attack of guards and forwards, and have the ability to be closer to the Hokies' post players in height than most. To win, the Hokies will need to limit Dyasia Fair, who averages almost 20 ppg and leads the team in assists, steals, and 3pt%. This is a team that scores and rebounds better than the Hokies but they do shoot worse, especially from the charity stripe and range (Fair excluded)

Then the Hokies go on the road for a very heavily circled date on my calendar down in Raleigh. NC State has the height to match the Hokies and a very deep bench. They score, rebound, and shoot from range better than the Hokies, but are limited at the line. They also have shown a little more carelessness with the ball having an ATO that is nearly even.

Finally, the Hokies return to Cassell to welcome FSU. The Noles' are slightly ahead of the Hokies in the ACC standings led by a dangerous Ta'Niya Latson, averaging 22.7 points per game. Expect most of the roster to play, as they all have played in at least 14 games this season. Myers and Timpson will be down low for most of the game for the Noles, which may give drivers a fit, as they combine for over 3 blocks per game. The Noles are also very active defensively, causing almost 9 steals per.

Prediction
I really, really want the Hokies to get over not being able to beat good teams. However, until that time arises, I can't see them going better than 1-2 over this stretch with the only win coming against Syracuse. Anything better and I'll consider it a win. Maybe the Hokies can steal the win on the road against NC State, but I'm not counting on it. I don't see how we can beat FSU.
