Totally overhauled WR room heading into next year, a great sign

Lane had 69/940/5 stat line, also returns kicks and punts.

I believe he has three years to play two remaining.

1500 yards and 10 TDs in 3 seasons, 900+ 5TDs in 2022.

He'll likely be the punt returner...he has 38 w/ 12 yd avg

Tucker Holloway probably begs to differ

I'm still figuring this out.

He had one or two great returns but that def doesn't solidify the job for next year

And interestingly enough, i just now realized that since the UVA game was (understandably) called off, Holloway redshirted and still has 4 years of eligibility left

Edit: im wrong lol disregard

He played against Liberty. Pretty sure that was his 5th game.

Yeah, that was the big conversation that week.

But I think his parents went to Liberty, which is why he opted to play and not preserve the redshirt.

Hokiesports says "Played In Four Games", but records stats in five games -- so probably the redshirt is burned. Good call and good catch, my error!

Had to double check myself. The 0 stats for the Wofford game had me questioning.

I mean hokiesports is what the ncaa will use to determine eligibility right? right?

And against arguably the worst punt protection/coverage unit in the country last year.

competition and depth are very good things!

He looks bigger than 5'10" 170lbs even in the Miami clips.

Yep. Thought similar - and posted as much on a different site earlier this morning. Except that article said he was 5'8" 183lb.

Tayvion Robinson was listed at 5'10 185 at VT. He looks at least that big to me.

after the Varner thing, just let me know when he can't get out of it

Welcome to the right side, Fam.

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Grant Wells, Braxton Burmeister, Ryan Willis, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

🀞no more bad news. Window closes on the 18th I believe and classes start the 17th.

Then we'll definitely have a few hit the portal on the 17th (or 18th, if it's still open part of that day). Scholarships are locked in once classes start, and those who were waiting for that, but have been told they have no path to playing time, will be hitting the portal that day once they have their first class.

Correct. Several names you know as well.

In Pry I trust - he's been involved with big boy football for the last several years and knows what the roster needs to look like.

Nice pick up by staff, any linemen out there? Am I the only one scared about both sides of the ball? I think we have enough pass catchers now. Ol an dl need an injection of talent.

Little in football operates in a vacuum. Receivers who can get separation and catch 50/50 balls can indirectly make an offensive line look better. And a QB. And a running game.

If the players who performed fairly well in '21 can get in sync with the new coaching staff (and vice versa) - I think improved OL play isn't a crazy thought.

He had four catches for 130 yards against Miami and was instrumental in demonstrating the the U was indeed still not back, so I like him already. I'm looking forward to seeing this offense next year!

This transfer is such good news, we should name our stadium after him

This is absolutely a reasonable take, I love it!

I'm still figuring this out.

I guess Whit and Pry really were serious about stepping up our NIL game

Welcome to our home.

Really like the efforts by the staff to beef up the WR corps, hopefully it leads to some respectable production from that group.

Great Pick-up. I'm hoping Grant Stays at Punt Returner and Lane becomes the Kick Returner.

Love the Speed Angle to him and hoping our slot play can pick it up from here between him and Daquan Wright.

Matchup nightmare coming!!!!

Do you mean Tucker Holloway for punt return

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

I have the same question above, did y'all not see what Holloway did?

Edit: also it sounds like he might actually be a receiver which is what we need, not punt returners

I'm still figuring this out.

Is it bad idk who grant is? Grant wells? He wasn't even a punt returner

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Yeah, just double checked. Wells is the only Grant first or last name, so I'm assuming it was a brain fart.

Maybe he is mixing up Tucker with one time recruit and now Olympic track athlete Grant Holloway

Nah I think he meant Grant Noel. Absolutely explosive. /s

I'm still salty about that game against Miami in 2001. One of the all time great CFB teams, and we were within 2 points, with a QB stat line that included 4 for 16, 81 yards, 4 ints, and one fumble. What could've been...

And it was lost because of a dead on pass dropped in the endzone for 2 points.

True, but that's akin to one team playing like crap for a whole game, losing on a late penalty, and blaming the penalty for the loss. Noel threw as many passes to Miami defenders as he did to Hokie receivers. Any semblance of decent QB play would have won that game going away.

My point was more the "one time he threw a great pass the WRs didn't know what to do with a ball thrown that well, it was a new expirence for them"

Hahaha concur.

yes, I don't know why I said Grant

Hokies, Local Soccer, AFC Ajax, Ravens

Very nice pick-up for the VT receiver corps. Welcome to Hokie Nation!! Hopefully, we can find the right QB1 to manage the game and get the ball to our talented new receivers.

Wow.

It sure seems to me the staff is pushing hard to improve the bottom line.

I like it.

First the bottom line, next the defensive line. With the offensive line right after.

I guess I should have said bottom lines

The WR room is turning over. Based on a lack of development and production. Good. This is how we can use the portal to benefit us.

Fantastic job by Coaches Mines, Bowen, and Pry in restocking the shelves with WRs.

Difference-maker player. Let's go!

Man, I saw this in the tracker for the first time in weeks, and I was afraid that Lane pulled a Darian Varner. Glad that is not the case.

Sorry for the resurrection. My heart skips a beat with those too.

Is it me, or do these numbers seem arbitrary?

"I dunno. What do you think? How about an .8900?"
"No way! .8800 max!.

Sounds like a conversation my ex gfs would have

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

They rate you that high?

I think you may have overlooked the decimal....

"Nooooooooooo!"
~What happened?
"James Franklin to Virginia Tech...."
~Fuck me......*sigh*
"Oh my God.... They're gonna take all our recruits... like WTF bro...."
~*squints eyes in disbelief*

I'm pretty sure everyone is either a 1 or a 0.

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

His decision was made after a phone call with longtime Virginia Tech assistant coach Bud Foster. All Foster told him was, "We win. They don't."

Eh sort of. My understanding is that they're all relative. Here's an explanation about it. It doesn't explicitly detail how the player rating is calculated, but here's what I inferred:

  1. Players are sorted into buckets (5-star = top 32 player, 4-star = top ~350 player, high 3-star, mid 3-star, low 3-star, 2-star)
  2. [This is where I am speculating] Within those buckets, players are ordered and (I assume) equally spaced. So if the top 4-star gets a .97, the bottom 4-star gets a .90, the middle 4-star gets a .9350, etc
  3. After every camp or other major event in the prospect's recruiting process, evaluators bump the rating up or down by a small amount

My guess is that for transfers, they basically stop after step 2 (because once the season ends, there's no major events to bump the rating up or down).

So what probably happened in Jaylin Lane's case is:

  1. The evaluators agreed that he fits the description of a high 3-star ("a player with significant NFL upside who we expect to be an impact college football player") --> This means that he's somewhere between a .89 and .87
  2. They compared him side-by-side with 50ish other transfers who fit the same definition, and said 'hmm, Jaylin looks middle of the pack compared to these 50ish players' --> middle of .89 and .87 is .88, so they gave him a .8800

Nope, that's wrong.

On a 5 star system they rated him at nearly a 9 star and numbered accordingly.

See Marcolini's last article for an explanation of this.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Except 247 ratings arent as granular as .9350 -- just integers. composite is where you get the other decimal places

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

ahh gotcha - so that's probably why Lane got a .88 - because there's no composite for transfers?

Yeah, basically got an 88 grade from 247 in-house is my understanding
