Eliminate the Leprechauns....steal their Pot'O'Gold
The Hokies face the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to kick off their ACC title defense. The Hokies are 9-9 against Notre Dame going into their 19th meeting after a 93-87 victory earlier at Notre Dame. This is a down season for the Irish, as they look to send Coach Brey out with a whimper.
Mike Brey, is in his twenty-second and final year at the helm of Notre Dame. In twenty two years, his team has won 20+ games fifteen times. He has led them to the NCAA Tournament twelve times, with two elite eight appearances. Notre Dame has been to the post season in all but two seasons under Brey.
Coach Brey's Fighting Irish are having their worst season in almost a decade. They come in 11-20 with only three conference wins over Georgia Tech, Pitt and Louisville.
The Fighting Irish this season were expected to do much better than they have (sound familiar) with a very experienced squad. Coach Brey has a regular rotation seven players which consists of five Seniors. The results though have been anything but stellar although their luck factor is on par with the Hokies with six conference losses by two baskets or less.
Defensively, the Fighting Irish are a very situationally based defensive team. This means against Tech we may see man to man and probably some high perimeter zone with defensive players switching off over or under screens to prevent open perimeter looks by the Hokies guards. The other aspect that we may see a lot of is to double team Mutts in the post to prevent him easy access and force him to make a good perimeter pass. If this team begins trying to utilize this double team, expect to see Cattoor receive the perimeter pass and then force Notre Dame to decide how to approach him. Ideally the Hokies would use Mutts in the high post and turn him loose to drive to the basket with Basile crashing the opposite side of the lane.
Offensively, Notre Dame runs a four out, one in motion offense. They rely on a Nate Laszewski, who leads them in scoring at 14 points per game. That said they have three guards scoring in double figures so defending the perimeter is a much higher priority. The Irish shoot 26 three-point attempts per game, hitting on almost 10 of them. This means the Irish find almost 30 points a game from behind the perimeter. Last time out it was 13-30, which was the biggest factor keeping them in the game. That said, they still manage 35 more points per game between the line and inside the arc. Only nine of those points come from the line where as a team they are shooting 72% on the season.

What to expect from Notre Dame?
The Fighting Irish are defined by Nate Laszewski. If the Hokies can slow him like the Ladies slowed Hailey Van Lith, then this game will be over early. Go at him on offense hard early. The rest of the Irish come in with five more players averaging 8.5 or more points per game but the Fighting Irish only go two deep on the bench for significant minutes or contributions. That may be only one deep if Starling is unable to play due to his knee. The offense completely focuses around getting Laszewski the ball in the post with kick out options to Starling, Ryan or Goodwin.
In the first game, Laszewski and Basile seemed to be mirror each other. Both broke 30 points and had similar others stats except for time on the floor. Basile was only out there 26 minutes to do his damage to Laszewski's 36 minutes of play.
Opponents are averaging an astonishing 74.7 points per game which is the primary indicator of how much this team has struggled defensively. The Hokies shot 43% from the perimeter and 57% overall.
The Fighting Irish committed 19 fouls against the Hokies in the first game. The majority of them were shooting fouls in the paint. The Hokies were aggressive and the more athletic team, consistently getting inside their defender. The passing game of Mutts to Basile is likely seared on Brey's brain. Add in Rice penetrating from outside, it draws that much more attention to the paint. That leaves the outside open for Cattoor and Pedulla to have big games.
As a team the Fighting Irish are shooting 36% from the perimeter on 26 attempts per game. Laszewski and Goodwin are the starters the Hokies must focus on the most outside but Hammond off the bench is that bench guy that does nothing but hit threes that will probably have a career day if things go as normal for the Hokies.

The Hokies
Mutts had a field day with nearly a triple-double, although his early shot selection was questionable. Regardless, he is the most likely to turn this game by keeping Notre Dame off balance from the high post. The Hokies also have the bonus of having Rodney Rice available to create off the dribble.
The Hokies will have their hands full with Laszewski and Goodwin, who utilize an inside-out combination that the Hokies haven't dealt with much this season. Basile and Mutts will need to double team Laszewski every time he has the ball in the paint. Laszewski honestly had the most one sided game of any Hokies opponent this season.
The Hokies biggest change in recent contests has been to play more consistent defense which was severely lacking the last time these two teams met. As good as the Hokies shot, they allowed the Irish to hit 55% from the floor and 43% from outside.
Neither team created many turnovers last time out so the biggest separating factor was the 18 free throw differential the Hokies enjoyed. Notre Dame can ill afford foul trouble with their shortened bench.
In Closing
The Hokies have to find the open shooter when Notre Dame sags off the perimeter. Using high ball screens also will be important to free up the guards. Notre Dame is slow switching and allows many open looks.
Force Notre Dame to choose between giving up the easy bucket or fouling. Let Mutts loose. He is the X-Factor Notre Dame cant handle.
WIN OR GO HOME

LETS GO
HOKIES!!!
Getting them fouling early
My son's first comment....what happened to the floor? It used to look like a rainbow?
Seriously....did they change the paint or were the ladies on a different court?
Same arena so think they changed the floor
They have different sets of flooring for women's and men's tournaments
That seems like a lot of unnecessary work......
Different corporate sponsors. I bet Ally paid for one floor and New York Life paid for the other.
There's not a team in the ACC this year that I think we can't beat, but I also just can't see us winning 5 days in a row.
So with the realization that making the NCAA tournament is a gigantic long-shot, I'd be happy if we can win a combined 4 or 5 games in the ACC and NIT tournaments.
Can we please make 2 foot baskets?
This is an issue that has not been limited to today.
Catoor rounding into ACCT 3 point shooting form.....unfortunately so is Notre Lame.
Looks like we didn't learn our lesson again. Letting them stroke open threes
Stopped staying tight to our man and trying to help too much leaving someone open. They have done so well up to this point staying on man and in front, I sense tired legs in that stretch
Woof, all those missed shots around the basket
Let's hope that evens out to the good side. We also need to start running them off the 3 point line.
That's a nice graphic. Can you share a link?
https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/playbyplay/_/gameId/401514040
What does their shot/missed chart look like? We're shooting roughly the same (2 and 3). Be interesting to see if they missed as many bunnies.
they've missed 8 in the lane as well, but about half were short jumpers
Feel like zona making those 3s is the unexpected difference for them rn hopefully that cools off and we can keep grinding
I'm worried about Laszewski heating up in the 2nd half
Let them shoot 70% after the four minute timeout.
Hammond has 15 of their 32 points...maybe guard his better.
Hammand averages 9ppg. Has 21.
I just wish the announcers would give him a little affection.
Huge to get 3 on Hammond. FUCKING RUN AT HIM WHEN HE COMES BACK IN!
Some bullshit push offs and lowering shoulder on offense by ND a couple times not called this game
In no world should Basile be covering Hammond.
Death, taxes, and an opponent setting a career high against the Hokies
Horseshit calls there. At least we have them in the bonus now.
Reeeaaallllyyyy would like to see Rodney Rice create his own shot sometime soon
Yeah he seems to just dribble around and not do much unfortunately...
Laszewski should play for Duke. He's been pushing off and arm barring like crazy. Finally gets called for an offensive foul and bitches about it.
Poteat giving them bacon
Worried the refs are gonna swallow whistles for the next 7 or 8 mins.
Didn't even Fing try to get a rebound on a FREE THROW. So over this staff just giving up on second chance offensep
Saw mutts standing straight up and being the only one under the basket and knew you would be STEAMING inside
You weren't wrong. He wasn't even looking at the basket at release. We have lost 7 ACC games by six or less. All it takes is a couple more buckets from offensive rebounds each game to completely change our season. I know it simplifies it but the staff wanting Fire and Forfeit to be a defining aspect just makes me angry. They can say it's about getting back to set defense all they want but it doesn't hold water with me. How many opponents are going to beat us up the court consistently in the ACC? Like one or two....Miami and maybe Clemson this year depending who they have on the floor. All the rest play methodical offensive sets. Even if just two try each play for a rebound you have a chance.
yeah. if Mutts would have boxed out right there it was his rebound. smh
Man this ND team is stupid annoying.
They're solid offensively and have a ton of experience. If we try to sit on a small lead they will find a way to score enough to win
Not even looking for everyone to stay in but shooter should follow his shot and at least one forward should try
Missing 5 FTs is going to be a problem down the stretch.
RUN AT RYAN AND HAMMOND!!!
Cannot tell you how much I hate the Mutts lob to Basile
The success rate has to be like 10%
About the same success date as mutts trying to drive from the three point line
Cannot tell you how much I hate Basile not being able to reliably dunk inside two feet
He'll turn it on for a game and dunk everything though! Then it goes away for three games ๐
I'm with you. We've had some successful lobs inside but most of the time they are telegraphed, lazy passes!
I'm sitting like 10 feet from that basket and I'll tell you it looks even lazier and hangs in the air longer than it probably looks on TV. Not even something I would do in pick up
Mind boggling stupid foul by padulla there.
Except that it wasn't a foul. He had all ball...they were calling it no matter what.
that's one of those "looks like a foul from 35 feet away out of the corner of my eye" type motions... which is like asking to get a whistle.
Charmin soft
Basile needs to stop with the help defense and guard his guy off the three point line
No confidence at all in our guys to pull this back.
Writing on the wall...
A strong VT contingent in the coliseum tonight, but that miss by MJ really sucked the life out of us. Counter with the made threes by ND and this feels in the building like a mountain too tall to climb
If only Basile could do that CONSISTENTLY
*would
1-4 from 3 this half.
That should not have been a foul on Basile
It amazes me how physical they are when the drive (hooking, holding, lowering shoulder and push offs), but then call it the other way when we get anywhere near them.
Poor shot selection overall. Missed easy buckets the bane of our existence.
Just not smart basketball tonight. Stupid decisions repeated over and over.
Also the refs have been very inconsistent both ways IMO. Not a well officiated game at all.
#ACCstandard
Basille out of control twice now and taking offensive fouls
Basille on floor with 4PFs. Guaranteed they will go at him (something we don't do).
That was our first bench points of the night. Really??!! That's a telling stat.
Pedulla giving me a fucking heart attack
He went full ryan willis
Do you ever go full ryan willis?
Only if you want to make money
Ryan nearly broke his ankle there
How does Pedulla take and elbow to the face and get called for a foul?
Pedulla elbowed in face
Gotta be smarter than that, can't be committing fouls with your face /s
definitely can't be standing still in front of an opposing player and hit their elbow with your face
*also how the F was that FT's for both teams
If this doesn't go back to the hokies it's complete horseshit. Punch in the face plus a kick.
Review shouldn't take this long. It's blatant.
Wish these guys were miked up like XFL
I think they are deciding where they want to go to dinner after the game
How in the heck do they even end up at that result
#goacc
Matt Zona stole Grayson Allen's face.
How the fuck is that a foul at all on Pedulla? Illegally taking an elbow to the face???
The contact was from the elbow. That's in no way on Pedulla.
Wtf kind of bs is this. The hit to face came before the common foul.
That's a cop out
Any way You can explain what that was?
Looks to me like we got fouled for contact and they got fouled for "hands" to the face.
To me it looked like the first contact was when he swung around and contacted Pedulla's mouth.
It was a really good defensive play. The opposing player was going to break for the basket to get a pass but Pedulla wisely had that whole side blocked as he was standing there between the big guys.
Don't forget Pedulla got kicked after the elbow to the face.
Only thing I gave been able to remotely consider in their logic was if the first foul was on Pedulla than the Technical was not for the elbow so the only thing left is that Zona also smacked Basile in the face with his other hand. Any way you slice it, it was wrong on so many levels.
The kick on the way down as explained by tv guy
We making up rules now?
How does Wertz get to shoot Zona's free throws??????
Zona fouled out.. he can't be on the court! lol
Literally how can both players foul and be called at the exact same instance. Weird result there. If the block was called first he should have to
Shoot and then foul out
Except by their ruling, his free throws were awarded prior to his fifth foul so should have shot then hit the bench. Mike Brey said it. This was not an A squad of refs. Not sure if an A squad exists in the ACC though.
#ACCStandards
I suppose by that timeline, he should have been the one shooting FT's then going to be bench.
#reflogic
ref's missed a few on both ends but stuff like that when you get a chance to look at the replay should be so easy.
the play-by-play for that sequence is ridiculous. That was a really long second.
That's a pretty cool catch as ridiculous as it was.
Now they get to put their best free throw shooter on the line?
Did some reffing back in the day... I am certain that Mike Young gets to choose shooter in this case.
Should have gotten to but that's not how it went down. Notre Dame sent their best guy to the line which caused Young to explode. It was a clown show all around.
I would explode as well if a 46% free throw shooter was replaced with a 80% on a foul that should have been reversed or negated.
This fucking team can't make two free throws in a row
And Zona should have had to shoot his FTs....he hadn't fouled out on the common foul call against pedulla.
THIS FUCKING TEAM CANT MAKE TWO FREE THROWS IN A ROW
Should have been a lane violation on Hammond there. Whatever. Piss poor refereeing as usual.
What are the odds Pedulla misses these FTs because he has a concussion?
Not a huge foul up 3 guy but feel that's the move here
If we didn't shoot 63% from FT none of that would have mattered
FAM?
We lived fam!
Whew.
Cormac Ryan can now go home cryin'
Fuck Cormac Ryan
Illegal screen by Cormac Ryan not getting called on that final set play is basically the game in a nutshell lol
Shooter shuffled his feet during the pump fake as well. Nothing ever gets called that late.
WHEW FAM
FAM!!
Get another W tomorrow!
LET'S GO!!
Brey with some digs at the refs in the postgame.. particularly the elbow call
"Now that I'm out of the ACC" lmao I love it
Yeah "If this was an A squad, and this most definitely was not an A squad"
Man...I love coming on here, but im glad my sister messaged me and I realized we won before reading. I had an event and couldn't watch or pay attention to the score. Until the "Fam" messages on here I would have thought we lost.
It was ugly a majority of the second half. Just did enough. As others have said. Survive and Advance, Repeat.
