Jesse Hanson charged with Larceny for allegedly stealing campaign signs

That gets you larceny?! I see that as picking up litter. Stupid signs are everywhere, should only be allowed for a week before the election.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

Campaign signs are annoying. And I wish that people would pick them up promptly after elections. It seems, tho, that the allegation is that he was stealing signs of an opponent to his mother-in-law, so likely it was nefarious.

Either way, it's a stupid thing to do. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.🤷‍♂️

I assumed he was only grabbing specific signs, but it gave me the chance to pull out the soapbox.

They make nice target holders.

tomato stakes...back in the day

Or as the targets themselves.

Lol didn't see that one coming

Jesse Hanson

"Exit light..."

I can't decide if I should not care about this, or not care about this.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me.

This is a non-issue.

I remember my last year of college, I got so drunk at TOTS that I tried to steal a traffic cone and walk to Terrace View. Cops picked me off and I spent the night in jail.

Since I cooperated, cops just charged me with a DIP instead of DIP + larceny. Did some community service and got it taken care of. Went through VT judicial office, told them exactly what happened and they gave me a "deferred suspension" (a.k.a. if you mess up again, you're going to actually get suspended).

I imagine Hanson got the larency charge because it was multiple signs and/or he was sober when it happened. It's a dumb "boys will be boys" moment. We have more important things to worry about.

Yep. Most of us have done a lot worse in our yute

I got lit at TOTS (well then it was The Balcony) and stole two chairs and two stools one night. It took two runs to accomplish. On the second run out the door the bartender chased me yelling "I'm calling the cops this time you son of a bitch". I sobered up the next day and returned everything and the same bartender was there. She accepted my apology and they allowed me to continue to visit. She was cool about it but ribbed me pretty hard anytime I was there after that. She would yell out "Hold down your chairs" whenever I entered.

To quote the Brothers Osborne: "I'm Good For Some But I'm Not For Everyone"

Just an aside, but I think it's really funny bartenders get mad at drunk people that they themselves have enabled and overserved. Know it happens frequently but still.

She would yell out "Hold down your chairs" whenever I entered.

Hilarious

I also have a thieving story involving TOTS, but the item in question still sits on my built in shelves as decoration.

"Nooooooooooo!"
~What happened?
"James Franklin to Virginia Tech...."
~Fuck me......*sigh*
"Oh my God.... They're gonna take all our recruits... like WTF bro...."
~*squints eyes in disbelief*

More like "Holden Chairs Hokie".

"Nope, launch him into the sun and fart on him on the way up"
-gobble gobble chumps

"11-0, bro"
-Hunter Carpenter (probably)

It might be tempting sometimes, but it's not cool to steal someone else's campaign signs.

He's not the first person to ever think of this.

Sounds like the case of my hometown where the town treasurer had her husband and son stealing opponents signs leading into the election. I think it ended up being a slap on the wrist but lots of shame on a small town

Danny is always open

Can't be doing that.

Rookie move

Everyone knows the best way to deal with campaign signs is to put up another sign about 3 millimeters in front of it

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

And behind it

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

And also wait until the day after the election to....Strategically Transfer Equipment to an Alternate Location. That way the campaigns aren't having to replace the signs.

my mom ran for county wide office once. Some assholes kept stealing her 4'x8' signs and a lot of her small ones, too. Ended up costing a lot of money and there was absolutely zero recourse. Thank you for coming to my TED talk...

I've never once decided who to vote for based on a sign on the side of the highway.

How do you know?

That kind of stuff is subliminal.

Didn't you ever watch Fight Club?

I think it works for people who don't do any research and just show up to vote based on name recognition alone. I don't think those people are good voters, though.

Id argue most people are not good voters. There was an interesting video I watched a long time ago talking about the ROI for the effort required to be an informed voter being so obscenely low that it drives a lot of the things we see.

I mean, most people seem pretty lazy and self-absorbed when it comes to most things. No reason why voting should be any different. Not like we all have a supercomputer in our pocket connected to a global information network.

Nah, I'll just vote for that guy who has all those signs on the side of the road and the catchiest slogan. All that research would take up the time I need to watch the Love is Blind finale.

while I think you're mostly right, an element you're leaving out is party affiliation. I'd wager that most people just vote for whoever represents whichever party they find themselves most aligned with. It's one reason I think the two party system is flawed for such a large and diverse group of people in our country.

Onward and upward

I kind of avoided any talk about political parties on purpose to keep it all civil, but I agree with you 100%.

Blind loyalty to any group of people is usually not a great idea. Unless they're a football team, of course.

Well played.

That's how many people feel about political parties.

Yes, it's a bad idea. But, yes, it's how a lot of people vote. And for a lot of lazy people, it's name recognition on the ballot at voting time, with the right letter beside the name.

So while you don't think those signs are affecting your voting, they are effective, particularly on the local politicians where a lot of folks aren't focusing a lot of attention.

Voting Precinct Chief, here.

A good percentage of voters are lazy and ill informed. I've been doing this for a decade and I can promise 10% of the voters come in asking what they're voting on, in the precinct. They know the should vote, but they have no idea what is going on.

Also, and I can't stress this enough, find out where you're supposed to vote. It saves you time and money. I've had people who work near my precinct who come in to vote, but can't because they don't live in that precinct. Some don't even live in the same congressional district.

Thirdly, know who your candidates are. My precinct is near some very hotly contested races every year, so the TV ads are advertising candidates who aren't on the ballot at my precinct, yet voters want to vote for them.

This all takes 5 minutes and is completely free.

This is why I write in Tyler Durden on my ballots

I've been writing myself in for everything for years. That's how I got to be senator.

How's Mandy?

That's the second Animal House reference in a few days. I had to explain to my 14yo where the Shout song at the game came from. Paraphrasing, "It's from a movie that came out in the mid-70s called Animal House, that you won't see for a few years at least."

She's been watching a lot of classic not-kid movies with us recently (Shawshank, Green Mile, Nightmare on Elm Street, Silence of the Lambs, etc.), but I don't think Animal House will be on the menu for a while.

Then again, after her first college visit since she was really little, maybe that'll be a good follow-up to explain college life. LOL

Just to be clear...

Silence of the Lambs 👍
Animal House 👎

If you play it, they will win.

lol, right? Like, how do you explain that scene in Silence of the Lambs where the guy in the next cell throws his sperm on Clarice?

If she'd asked what that was all about, I'd have told her. She's in HS.

You gotta be educated to know what to stay away from.

First 2 seasons of Animaniacs and a few episodes of Tom and Jerry and Looney Tunes should also help prep the mind.

Then she's already well prepared.

This better be a situation where the charges gets dropped and they don't try and make him an example, because this falls into the who cares category for me.

Probably a fine & community service at worst. Depends on if he was technically working/volunteering for his MIL's campaign at the time.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

We did this at a Martinsville race one time. My dumbass friend brought the grill but forgot the grate. There were tons of campaign signs around so we took a bunch and pulled the wire out and kerplunked a grate in the grill. Worked fantastic.

I love a good nap. Sometimes that's all that's getting me out of bed in the morning.

Thank you Jesse, for cleaning up neighborhood garbage. It's absurd you've been arrested for this.

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

His decision was made after a phone call with longtime Virginia Tech assistant coach Bud Foster. All Foster told him was, "We win. They don't."

Dear kids.... EVERYTHING is on camera today. Everything. Would be wise to heed this.

I believe it was air tags in this case
