YouTubeTV DVR Unskippable Ads

I was watching my recording of the Wake Forest game through YouTubeTV and I noticed that they started adding unskippable ads randomly throughout the recording which even played over live gameplay. When it played over the game I couldn't watch that portion because the recording kept playing behind the ad and if you tried to rewind after the ads finished, it would restart the ad again or go to before the ad and then start the ad at the same point. Has anyone else noticed this on their YouTubeTV recordings recently?

Make sure it is your recording and not a bulk recording. I don't know how else to describe it other than there or some things it has on its server that are "on demand" in case you didn't record it. But you have to look in your library for your actual recording.

I love a good nap. Sometimes that's all that's getting me out of bed in the morning.

That was the first thing I checked. It is the live recording. All I can find when googling is that this was an issue that they were looking into back in 2022 after their DVR system crashed systemwide. I'm starting to think it's now a feature and not a bug.

Also usually when it's a VOD version, the "recording" stops when the ad plays so you don't miss anything. These ads replace the recording for me.

Playing an add over what I'm watching guarantees I won't be buying/using/recommending said product or service.

Not quite the same issue, but Sling's DVR would fast forward to the game but when I pressed play, it'd revert back to where I started. I'm using a Roku stick so it may be a buffering issue.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

This was driving me nuts enough to post for the first time. Same thing. I chatted with YoutubeTV support and they were zero help. Kept saying that they have no control over what the network includes as commercials. I kept telling them that they were Youtube ads, and we went around in circles. The weird thing too was if you skipped during the youtube commercials, you could see thumbnails of the actual game in the background. I missed the 4th down stand and field goal in the 3rd quarter and the strip sack/fumble in the 4th. If this happens again, im going to have to seriously consider moving to another streaming service.

You got your first leg sir

Hulu had similar issue last night too. I was behind about 20-30 minutes and couldn't fast forward through everything like I could a couple weeks ago when I had to start late.

I know years ago I couldn't faster forward on ESPN because they prevented it while other channels worked so it might just be that issue all over again.

I'm having the same problem with the Wake game. I haven't had any problems with any other games this year including watching part of the FSU game today. It might be a bug with how that specific game recorded it. Might be worth a reddit post.

The circular conversation is the most annoying thing. I can't get into ACCN on the ESPN app using my parents FiOS account. 2019 and 2020 I tried to fix it and neither Verizon nor ESPN would take responsibility.

Without being quixotic this is the basic response to @calblecutting.

I'm 100% out of network for almost every team I'm interested in, and even when my NFL team (Detroit since '91) I can only get a nfl network replay two days after the fact.

All this to say no love for anyone but Tyrod (autocorrect really doesn't like that); Daniel Jones getting more traction than Tt2? Is just fing stupid

I'm still figuring this out.

I noticed this too yesterday as I wanted to rewatch the game after getting back from going down to Blacksburg to watch game... if that doesn't change, I will be making some serious considerations on leaving them.

This is NOT a defense of YoutubeTV, but rather a consideration for those of you thinking about switching/changing, etc. Typically, when things like this start happening all their peers follow suit. So you might end up going through the trouble of switching your service for it to end up being the same thing all over again at the new one.

There's been a trend in general with subscription services in adding more ads, adding a cheaper version with ads, etc. I doubt the ads are going to be less common moving forward.

Two things I do not like about you tube TV- 1. Generally a full play, pitch, golf shot, hoops possession behind cable TV or the ESPN game tracker. Annoying. Its about 20-30 seconds behind, not 2 seconds. and 2. Regional sports networks- as in they don't have them save a couple. Here in PHX- no ballys, no pac 12 network for example.

I've got to say I only have that problem with certain devices. Especially cheap smart TVs, I wonder if they just do not process the stream the same way. On my phone and using a Google Tv dongle (with the remote) everything seems to stay quite current. My phone was ahead of Xfinitys broadcast on Saturday.

My phone is always ahead of my TV for Hulu (I know not youtube), but it's seems to act the same.

This happened to me as well. I missed two different touchdowns because they kept putting that fucking buffalo on the screen during the middle of the game. I was not happy. Will be cancelling if it happens again.

I hate rude behavior in a man. Won't tolerate it.

one click shows Wagoneer's been around TKP for 7 years. Sheesh. Everyone take a nap, have a snickers or something.

Look on the bright side, at least now you can name all the wing sauce flavors

To me it seems like a bug, possibly specific to this game or ACCN. I don't think it happened in live broadcast, and this is the first time it's happened to one of my recordings. I would do research to see if other teams/channels had this problem including other sports. I record a lot of stuff on YouTubeTV and this is the first time that's ever happened.

Simplest explanation... There was something going wrong on the ACCN side that didn't send code that commercials were over during the broadcast that kept YTTVs automated commercial breaks running too long.

Given that the ACCN is underfunded, and doesn't have ESPNs best and brightest working it,.that makes the most sense

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Agreed. Starting too early ending too late not lined up with the thumbnails. It's a spurtle problem.

I sent a complaint to Youtube via their feedback system yesterday in the height of my rage. I got the following from them.
"Thanks for reporting an error for Wake Forest at Virginia Tech. We weren't able to fix this issue this time, but we wanted to thank you for letting us know about it. It helps us as we work to improve our DVR quality for everyone. "

We appreciate your help in making TV better for everyone!"

At least they acknowledged it was an issue..... Or might be a boilerplate. who knows.

looks pretty boilerplate to me but hopefully they're actually looking into it

Onward and upward

Oh and thanks to everyone who legged me. I can upvote/downvote now :)

FWIW, this same issue happened with my recording of the first episode of the new season of Saturday Night Live. Once the YTTV ads finished, it was already significantly into the next skit. So it doesn't not appear to be an ESPN/ACC Network-specific issue.

Interesting. Might've been an issue all day Saturday

That's what it sounds like. I kept feeling like I was going crazy with the recording start messed up and then randomly missing plays throughout watching.

I can skip this week on hulu

For me it wasn't the live version that was the problem. It was the recording of the live version where YouTubeTV overlayed unskippable ads during the recording which included the actual gameplay.

It was like when you recorded over a previous recording on a VHS. You lose the video that was recorded over.

Some developer didn't understand the goal of being able to record like we could on VHS
