I just spent over 7 hours in the Iron Maiden known as the Purdue game film, but I have extracted some tidbits about Rutgers.
Gird your loins. Rutgers has only given up two touchdowns in two games. They have 10 tackles for a loss. They have six and a half sacks. They have four interceptions.
Gulp.

Can the offense score at all this game?
2 points is a score.
Please be specific with your questions
Yeah....but me and GGC will be at the game. So we got that going for us. Buttgers will not prevail.
Gonna lose my voice regardless
Gonna be like 800 hokies from one of the NJ family fb groups sitting in a rutgers home section!
I'll call you Monday night about tailgating food/beer plans.....
Hopefully I'll see you guys there. Going to be at the Silver Lot?
Yes!
Yessir! Fittingly wearing a shirt that says GOBBLE GOBBLE on it
I was stuck in Newark for 3 days, for a minute there I thought I was just going to be absorbed as a NJ hokie and get a bonus VT game for my struggles.
Ugh. I had to spend a week there for work back in like 2001 and it was like a demilitarized zone. Then because they had like 4 or 5 flights to DC a day, they would just cancel them and move everyone to a later one until they had a full flight. I spent 12 hours at the Newark airport before I finally got out. I got very very drunk.
We got canceled put on the next flight to our destination such as 24 hours later. That one canceled too. Ended up tasking a flight to get close to home and took a train
The wife and I would have joined you as her dad is from the area and her uncle lives up there so we would have visited, but we have way more important things this weekend.
we're going to lose by 30 to an old homecoming sacrificial lamb
It'll probably be 39 at some point but we will probably close to something more "respectable" if that can be said about losing to Rutgers.
Bo knows football... this is a 2-play game or a race to, 10?

1st one there, wins?
b.street
Who is Bo?
Is that an old photo of a Bond girl?
Otherwise, I think I understand most of this post.
It's gonna be an ugly defensive slugfest and whoever scores 10 first wins, probably.
Not trying to show my age but Bo Derek. Total babe in her day.
Not Bond girl. From the movie "10"
Bo Derek, arguably one of the most attractive women of her time, or ever.
Text Bo: Jackson (callback to the old "Bo knows...." commercials
Picture Bo: Derek (as already identified).
It's a "sight gag" pun.
Just a strong resemblance to Honey Ryder (played by Ursula Andress) from "Dr. No."
(And you know Dr No isn't เนเธเน)
hey I got this one, nice
Nobody ever said rebuilds are pretty.
And this one seems to be no exception.
Thanks for warning us to up the pain medication. Early and often.
Coach Prime would like a word
His rebuild was definitely not pretty. The results are, sure, but the process? Ewwww.
winning is the only thing that matters.
To some.
Coach Prime's team building is very unique and I don't think it can be applied by anyone else. No other coach has the same brand recognition and media following. Even Saban couldn't pull this off (I think we can see that after their game against Texas). Deion is the only coach who can jump into a low end P5 job and just start taking transfers from anywhere simply because he is one of the most famous football players and football voices of all time. He is one of one. Pry is most certainly not Deion Sanders and it is unfair expect him to be.
Is it unique, or is it very unique?
4 INTs through 2 games? Rutgers D watching Wells film like
If Grant plays. I'm guessing Drones will be the one with INTs this week. That's especially true if Jennings and Lane are both out.
Jennings definitely out for a while with a broken leg
So sad for us. Sadder for him.
Jaylin has looked very good. We still have some play makers that can catch...Lane, Wright, Felton, Gosnell(s), Tuten. Going to be a long season though...still not a complete offense.
the further and further we get into this rebuild, the less and less faith I have that we'll ever get to a "complete offense"
Confirmed?
If that's the case the focus will probably be on getting him back for spring ball, rather than any time this season
I'm just working off the assumption that the coaches will not do the logical thing, and that Wells will be QB1
** Drones enters chat*
Daquan Felton Best Utilized
Lots of talk about the running game, offensive line, and off. play-calling. One smaller item that stands out to me 2 games into the season is how we are using DaQuan Felton). He has 1 catch for 34yds on a handful of attempts (anyone have that?). But I feel like he needs the ball thrown in a special way and this will be even more key with injuries at WR.
Throw the ball up high and let him high-point it and make a play. Underthrow a deep ball, fades, or goal line targets. The ball just needs a high arcing trajectory.
See high school highlights-- :30 and 1:05 marks.
HUDL high school highlights
Bowen/Wells tried at least once, I think twice against Purdue and couldn't connect. I agree we need to use his size to help us when we have a matchup advantage.
He caught the only ball that gave him a chance to make a play in the two games. With his athletic ability and catch circumference, that means the QBs have missed him by miles.
Well, something to work on.
Unfortunately with Wells at QB high arching trajectory means the ball lands in the 10th row.
We're gonna get boat raced by Rutgers.
I can't bet on VT in Virginia but there isn't a single game I'd put money on us winning for the rest of the year.
Not suggesting we'll lose out, but I have no confidence at this point.
no, we will beat uva@charlottesville
via GIPHY
They looked pretty decent against JMU for most of the game.
a million percent. its looking like they may not win a single game, even against bc and w&m. theyre that bad this year
death, taxes, and UVA sucking more than VT at football
I don't know...I think they fared a lot better against JMU than we would have.
I'm not confident we are any better, like not even a small amount better. If our team thinks they are better than them we'll lose by 21+... they better KNOW they are better and play like they are underdogs otherwise UVA will win.
I know we're bad, but this still sickens me.
Might need to start a new hobby this weekend!
Would probably be a healthier thing to do.
dunno, telmisartan is pretty good at keeping the bp down
I don't think it's any match for VT football.
Rutgers offense is not good at all. Watch the games they have played (NW and Temple).
We will not get boat raced. Stack the box and make their QB (who is TERRIBLE) throw the ball down-field. They have no weapons on the outside. RB (Monangai is solid). QB can move, but is a very poor thrower.
They have played, and beat, the two worst teams in FBS football this year.
Low-scoring game. VT by 3-10 (get the ball to Tuten in space please)
I'll concede that Saturday was weird, obviously- delay, wet field, new opponent, new head coach of opponent, injury to Jennings, etc. Having said that, Schiano can and will come up with a scheme that shuts our running game down. So VT will have to throw the ball- and I betcha the rutgers staff saw the punt returner safety defense used by purdue to negate the deep ball (brilliant I might add) so the key will be a very effective passing day for VT and/or a couple of heroic runs - where we make someone miss in space. It will be an ugly, low-scoring game.
Man, the TSL pod basically threw TBowe under the bus on the latest pod. Worth a listen and can't say I disagree with much there. Sounds like Wells will likely not be good to go so we may see the Drones show Saturday.
TBowe aint it. He was a long shot from the get go but it's clear now he isn't the OC we need
I've been thinking about this. Is there any chance that Pry, understanding what we have right now talent-wise was less concerned with who we have as our coordinators? And has planned to hire new coordinators all along once we have some talent? I mean honestly at this point why would he waste money on a proven OC? Just a thought that has crossed my mind.
when Bowen was first announced I was so perplexed by it that I was just rolling random thoughts through my head and one of them was that he was hired as a future fall guy to buy Pry some time.
That doesn't make sense though. Why would you waste time and money on an OC who isn't part of your end game? Unless Pry wasn't able to get his top 3 choices and had to settle for Bowen, I don't get why he would hire someone so risky.
You spend money on a proven OC because they have proven they can build and deliver a productive offense and that's what we are trying to do. Don't spend that money on a guy who has never demonstrated the ability to do just the thing we need and hope that he works out. It's a huge risk to take. Was there a chance Bowen was going to light it up and be the next new-hot-name in CFB offensive coaching? Yeah. But the chance that he is/was going to totally flop was way higher.
because our OL is in a state that would make any OC look bad
so why pay $1.5mil on a proven coordinator when you can pay $850k for a rising star, who if they live up to their potential turn in a great unit after a few seasons rebuilding, great you give them a raise - and if not they can be replaced with a more proven hire
I think what makes more sense is he knew we had a long rebuild and couldn't get a proven OC to buy in for that. He also wanted continuity and thought Bowen would be: good enough, cheap, willing to stick around for 3+ years.
I also think he didn't expect to suck this bad on offense though.
totally. I doubt Bowen was Pry's first choice. Given how long it took to announce the OC, I'm guessing he probably wasn't even in the top 5. But any good OC worth his salt would've looked at our roster and recognized that it was going to be a long and painful, possibly reputation damaging, rebuild. I think waiting so long to fire Fuente caused so much damage that VT just isn't an attractive job for talented coordinators. Hopefully Pry can help turn that around, but it's not going to be easy.
The weirdest thing is that Glenn would've been a reasonable hire as OC and QB coach. To not make him OC was weird (possibly very dumb?) and also the reason he is gone and now the OC at Cincy.
It was revealed this was due to the Jags contract. Roanoke Times
Sorry it is a pay article, but every new source is set up that way these days.
that's a handy coincidence that they took advantage of, I think. I doubt seriously that Bowen was top choice for Pry
This is true.
Makes me wonder if he would've signed Glenn to OC (instead of QB coach), would he have stuck around or bolt to Cincinnati? Would any moderately proven OC stick around 3+ years if another offer came right away?
But the TBow hire still stinks. And I think we'll learn a lot about Pry this offseason.
Replied above before seeing this. I think Glenn stays, but who knows I guess. Regardless he made much more sense than Bowen.
I'd bet if Glenn was the OC some would be calling for his head now too. (Might be better, but with the roster?...)
He was smart to bolt, take the Cincy job.
As many others have pointed out, we dont have all the horses yet. Problem #1.
But, that still doesn't immunize the staff from questions on scheme, decisions.
Can Drones pitch the ball? with our OL play, might need to work on some option runs to pick up yards on the ground. Confuse the defense rather than out muscle them. Hell if he can just get the read option right he might be an upgrade over Wells.
Honestly, man we might need the 3rd and Logan offense to actually have some success in the run game. I don't think going with Drones is a bad idea, even if Wells is healthy.
Can drones run the option? We damn sure saw that wells can't. He looked very awkward in the one option play, much like his awkwardness in the zone read. We must run an option, outside read or set up misdirection and hope we can catch them with a scheme. Power game is shit. Pry is fucked with 2 quarterbacks that have much different skill sets, and a line that couldn't block a grandma. It was fucking lunacy to watch them get 10 or more tackles behind the line of scrimmage.
I'm just hoping we don't embarrass ourselves. Can we be a .500 team this year? I said at the beginning of the season if we go 6-6 and beat UVa, that's a successful season.
Sobering after watching Purdue that may (probably) not be the case.
Bring back Scot Loeffler. There, I said it.
I'd rather have Stinespring than Loeffler - at least Stinespring could recruit. He was by far the best recruiter out of all the OC's we've had in the last 20 years
I wouldn't say Lefty couldn't recruit...he brought in Brewer and three ~4* high school QBs (Lawson, Durkin, Ford)...honestly I think he's more responsible for the 2016 season than Fuente was.
I would rate recruiting OCs for VT in this order (from best to worst): Stinespring, Loeffler, Bowen*, Cornelsen
I'm not saying Loeffler couldn't recruit. I just think Stinespring was better at it. I don't have the bandwidth to go back and look at the numbers but I'd wager Stinespring put more offensive players into the NFL/year than Loeffler did.
We had some real studs on offense pretty much every year that Stinespring coached - Loeffler's teams were okay but he never really found a true QB and our RB talent took a dip under him. Brewer was a gamer and had more heart than half the QBs in college but he wasn't an elite talent at the position. Loeffler did well getting OL and WR.
*Bowen hasn't really been here long enough to truly evaluate - he's brought in some good skill players so he's not a complete dud like Corny
Lefty epitomizes VT... tireless worker, great offensive mind, knows the game, experienced, and his #2 WR for a time was Kalvin Cline. He was running reverses with Deon Newsome. We can never have nice things on offense at VT.
Another bitch fest by me- offense hasn't scored a point in first quarter in 2 games . if anyone on this site doesn't think time of possession is important, the defense will fill you in. 38 to 22 for us and I think they had it about 11:30 of the fourth quarter.
This has been said and needs to be reinforced....
Pry inherited a dumpster fire his first year. Post season, he put out the fire. But, he still has the burnt up dumpster. This coming offseason he will order a new one. Due to supply chain issues it won't arrive until August 2025. And, this may be the first season we will be in position to go bowling.
I think I'm going to let this be my perspective. I believe it may be best to not focus on the W/L's this season. I am not going to focus too much on the overall game but look to key on specific plays, drives, particular adjustments etc., and let those be the "victories" we see get established and then progress throughout the season. I'm going to try not to make a more holistic assessment until 2/3 through the season for any meaningful/sustainable trends (i.e. glaring coaches issues) . I think anything else above this will be very upsetting.
For example, for any of us to say we could
have possibly scored above 50 points in any games for that matter is a victory.
We beat ODU = literal victory.
Our D adjusted in the Purdue game = victory
We scored 17 unanswered to compliment Purdue's same 17 in the first half. We came back and did so without Ali = victory (feel very bad for him).
We've got a talented and dangerous RB = victory (now lets Pry they use him as such)
If results come in faster, then that'll be a big fat layer of icing on the cake = Victory.
If they don't then Pry has his work cut out for him and if he doesn't act appropriately then he will potentially suffer the same fate as Furente with Corn Cob.
The problem with this analogy is that the OC might be an arson.
Hence the last paragraph. If he is an arson then Pry needs to learn from recent history and shit can Bowen after this season and then get him a true OC. While in parallel, Whit and Sands need to give him the Do Re Mi to do so.
All of these podcasters are picking Tech to win which I think is insane. Rutgers is going to win and I don't think it'll be as close as the score says.
I got Rutgers 24-10 what says everyone else?
I have Rutgers winning comfortably. 24-10, 27-10 sounds about right. Unless Drones really is the real deal and somehow can spark this offense, in particular the run game. But I have my doubts.
If I could bet on this game I would, no doubt.
VT 23-10
field Position
Time of possession
Yeah baby. Do it.
rutgers wins by at least 3 scores
Nailed it. Unfortunately
My head says Rutgers by a td. My heart says VT surprises everyone and blasts Rutgers to the tune of 31-7. Drones starts and after proving to be a real threat in the running game (not just his own legs but also making the right reads) the defense loosens up a bit and he has some easy wide open receivers who he hits for big gains throughout the second half. Rutgers gets flustered and we have at least one defensive score. Possibly one punt return for a td too.
Hey, a guy can dream, right?
I'm in MD and set the game to record tomorrow on BTN but now it's showing as Western Michigan vs. Iowa. Is anyone else seeing that too?
Edit: I found it on Verizon channel 830. One of the supplemental BTN channels.
Youtube TV shows us as being on "BTN Overflow 1", FWIW.
I love how YTTV has these overflow sports channels. Sometimes you end up with like 3 BTN games on at once. I don't think it's only the BTN either. Just have to make sure you have them showing if you use a custom channel guide.
