G5 discussing a G5-only playoff

Just speculation at this point, but there are discussions happening to flip the bird to the SEC and Big10, and for the G5 to make their own playoff and potentially a single conference / league with multiple divisions... call me crazy, but the ACC should at least hear them out.

According to the percentages in that article an individual SEC team is granted more media revenue than an entire G5 conference

I'm calling you crazy, we don't want to drop down to G5 status

I can honestly foresee a press conference where Whit is trying to convince everyone that joining a G5 conference after the ACC collapses was our best choice given the current climate of college sports.

You took the words right out of DC's mouth

uva - the taint of the ACC
Callused perineum is a symptom of being a uva fan

Uconn and Villanova hoops have 4 national titles recently. Liberty is basically our equal in football now and just played in a NY6 bowl. It could be worse I suppose

It would only work if the Big 12 came too and every team refused to play any Big 10/SEC team and signed a contract that didn't allow them to jump up to a higher league.

If so there's enough fans in that lower division to take away tons of viewership from those upper leagues (really only 15-20 very good brands). But otherwise it will not work. The 16 team Big 12 accounts for a ton of decently sized fan bases across several different regions. Them together with the top brands in the ACC enough value to stand on it's own imo

I was really hoping the G5 Rep, the B12 Rep and the ACC reps would have pushed the B1G and SEC more during the last playoff negotiations, I think the only they got was the no auto byes for the SEC and B1G. I honestly think the SEC and B1G only put that in to say "hey we gave up something".

It will be like trying to sell single A baseball to major league fans. Not going to sell. The b1g and sec is the show, and if you aren't a part of it, you will be irrelevant

Hey now, single A baseball games do have one advantage over the major leagues.

Cheaper Beer 😁

To quote the Brothers Osborne: "I'm Good For Some But I'm Not For Everyone"

Anecdote: Frederick Keys and Aberdeen Iron birds beer is 100% the same price as the Orioles.

Well now that is just wrong.

Man, I miss thirsty Thursdays at the Fitz for the Prince William Pirates -> Yankees -> Cannons -> Nats.

But that was back when it fun...

There's nothing like a major league ball park on a nice day, but I'd much rather go see a minor league game than a pro game. You're closer to the field, you can hear more of what's going on, less traffic, less people, cheaper concessions, parking is free, and you don't have to listen to Chads and Brads schmoozing customers with irrelevant stories and trying to close the sale for 3 hours. If it's an afternoon game, that is.

On a related note, is anyone else going to Hokies night tomorrow at the Kannapolis Cannonballers?

Where is everyone finding free parking at minor league games?!
Oh, that's right, the Maryland teams were associated with the O's and Angelos...nothing is free with them.

So when I was a kid growing up in Lynchburg, the Mets had their local affiliate there (this is when all the minor league teams still had the same name as the pro team so it was the Lynchburg Mets). My dad took me to a game in I think 1987 to see Dwight Gooden pitch. I remember thinking that was awesome, but of course I had no idea why Gooden had to go down to the minors for a while LOL.

No.

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

It's not quite time to throw in the towel just yet. At some point, the P2 will want some other teams to play.

So they need the rest of college football, they just don't want to pay for it.

I think that's the truth of it.

Right now they want to pay for two conferences, and get one free.

When the P2 go off and do their thing, and the current G5 go off and do their thing, what happens to the remaining 90 or so schools that were part of the P5/6? Do you think we are one of 4 or so schools picked for the B!G or the $EC? Do you think the NCAA has their ish together enough to organize something for those 90 schools? Do you think the ACC has their ish together enough to make the best decision for all parties, especially those outside the triangle in NC? It will be a wasteland of nothingness. At least the G5 is starting to embrace the fact that they are just glorified FCS schools.

If the expansion number for the P2 is 4, no chance in hell one of those is VT.

Agree. We're a tier 2 choice, best case. Maybe tier 3.

Tier 1: UNC, FSU
Tier 2: Clemson, UVa, maybe VT, maybe NCSU
Tier 3: maybe VT, maybe NCSU, WVU, GT, Miami

I honestly would probably watch this with more interest than the current CFP. It's a helluva lot more compelling than the same 4-6 teams being in the national championship each year.

I would 100% watch the G5 Playoff before the CFB Playoff every single year*

*the only exception would be if VT is in the CFB Playoff (which, if we're honest, ain't F-ing likely) and even then, I'd probably only watch the game(s) in which the Hokies are playing.

Onward and upward

G5 feels more like college football to me than the P2.

I agree 100% but unfortunately the revenue drivers are Walmart fans/NPC's. College football junkies like us only account for a small percentage of the audience

Walmart fans/NPC's

Unless things change drastically or we play Bama, LSU and Texas OOC- if VT goes undefeated, we will just get "FSU'd" now.

yes. Hence

which, if we're honest, ain't F-ing likely

Onward and upward

100% this. If some regional rivals (WVU, NCSU, GT, etc) went with us, I would vastly prefer this to even VT being in P2. I don't care about pro sports. P2 are going to be pro sports.

Would it make football more fun to watch? Yes. Would the revenue disparity make it so that all the other sports could not be competitive - unfortunately, yes.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

Not if we got enough of the other teams to join. The 36 teams in the Big Deuce 💩 are not enough to stand against the rest of the sport as far as revenue and interest goes. The other 80 or so teams that matter have enough fans that the they would lose a significant chunk of the revenue

And, this is a big AND, and if they realign conferences regionally so the smaller sports aren't flying across the country for a match/game, costs will go down. Lowered costs could work with the lowered revenue. Look at the Basketball-only or FCS schools that still offer Olympic sports.

I DIDN'T care about pro football from about '98 up until probably '20... then the NIL crap took hold, turned college football into a unsustainable free-agency, and here I am more invested in the Vikings draft board than anything else going on in college football. At least there's still baseball... for now...

Howdy, fellow Vikings fan!

I seldom speak to loluva grads, but when I do, I tell them I want large fries.

There are dozens of us on TKP, DOZENS!

Obligatory...
