Collin Schlee Commits to FB

Last spot was UCLA. Had heard he was looking for a spot with an open competition. So, I'm a bit surprised here.

VT >>> UK.

Apparently not much excitement about this either. Backup punter, backup qb, meh.

Go Hokies!!

I, for one, will choose to be happy about this news.

We had two scholarship QB's on the roster lmao

Frank Beamer isn't coaching any more, last I heard.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Hopefully this isn't a prelude to giving the Drones/LSU rumor legs

Well the portal is closed so we'd know by end of day if that's true since I think it's the last day for schools to finish filling paper work.

I think we just added a really good depth player that doesn't block Pop. My guess is he couldn't find a place to start figured he'd be close to home and back up a QB that took a lot of blows last year.

It was down to UK and VT. From what I read, I think he would have been in a situation similar to the 2023 Drones/Wells situation if he went to UK. The other QBs on the roster are not a running threat like him, although it seems that the new offensive coordinator likes to run the QB a bit (500+ yards for QBs rushing last year at Boise State).

That is all to say, I think VT's offense is already set up for him to have success (albeit as a backup) and the UK offense is a work in progress and it's unclear if he would ascend to be the starter or have an offense that suits his skills.

It would be a good interview question on his process to come to VT. Maybe he's getting a good bag for a year. Maybe he likes the idea of not taking hits every down but learning a new offense because he wants to move to GA position in future. It's an interesting decision.

Interesting indeed, maybe the offense is looking so good we are expecting the backups to play many second halves?

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

Only have 3 scholarship QBs and 1 isn't even on campus yet we needed depth there this season

I think this is a great pickup. We now have an experienced backup QB who can slot into our offense and emulate much of what Drones brings if there is an injury.

I like Pop Watson, but I feel much better with someone who has started multiple college football games back there.

yeah... I'd rather not have another 2020 Hooker/Burmeister/Kadum situation ever again

The Kadum start was definitely a low point. That was some bad offense.

Amazing add.

Getting backup QBs in the portal with 1 year of eligibility as a complete insurance policy is awesome news. Speaks to our improvements as a program.

This will not stunt pop's growth at all. He is an athletic backup that will play only if necessary.

Some interesting things about Schlee:

  • In 2022, he was starting QB for Kent State but dealt with nagging injuries that affected his play and eventually led him to share reps in the final two games. His stats were OK: 2600 total yards, 17 total TDs, 4 INTs., 65.7 QBR.
  • He had 3 punts in 2022, averaged 40 yards and had a long of 52 yards. (He's got some Danny Coale in him and maybe Bowen and Holt draw up some 4th down QB plays for him.)
  • In 2023, UCLA had no public practices or spring game. Weird. How did that work for you Chip?
  • Chip Kelly used QBs like Fuente -- very poorly. Schlee played in seven games, started 2, but was really the Wildcat QB that would come in and signify to the defense that it was likely a running play. He had 47 pass attempts and 42 rush attempts (and likely 40+ handoffs). He did average 10 yards a carry.
  • Schlee did not even attend UCLA 2024 Spring practices. UCLA did not have definite starter, but Garbers was expected to start (he was arguably the best in fall 2023). Schlee was likely the backup, but definitely had a chance to win the job. Maybe he had a poor relationship with the new OC Bieniemy (you know, the 2023 Commanders OC that was infamously not retained).
