Good core to build from

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

Also mentioned some are in class (Baker perhaps?). That core is young (minus Ekh and Micheaux) but pretty talented.

I think I've been able to read all the threads and this is the first time I recall hearing Baker's name even mentioned. I assume she wasn't on Kenny's wish list, or maybe his gift bag was too full already?

Wow you can thank your previous university and its leaderships, players, and fans in your new introduction press conference. Who knew.

At the beginning on the hot mic you can hear Whit say to Duffy "This song is called Tech Triumph. I don't know the words." Lol I actually like Whit, but come on man!

tbf I don't know the words either lol

I find the honesty authentic. Whit isn't an alum. Honestly, I don't know all of the words by heart. How many non-MVs do?

I am a huge VT fan.. have 2 degrees from VT... I couldn't tell you the words of tech triumph beyond humming the rhythm

Danny is always open

I know/knew about 80% of the chorus before reading DFW's post below with ALL the words

PS-Who knew there was a SECOND actual verse? It's never (to my recollection) played at games- just the first verse and chorus.

From the 2018 VT-uva game-"This is when LEGENDS are made!"

How many non-MVs do?

"Yes I am going to have favorites. My favorites are high production and low maintenance players, coaches, and staff." - JMFF

Honestly, I don't know all of the words by heart. How many non-MVs do?

The Highty-Tighties beat it into the freshmen, so they'd better all know. I kinda assume the rest of the Corps does also, but can't actually vouch personally.

Yup, my experience as well, but to be honest, I'm more likely to get a lettuce or hot dog commercial from the '50s right than to be able to remember all the words to TT, Highty Tighties or not. I know a lot of 'em though, and that'll have to do.

All cadets should. That said, if you put me on the spot, I probably couldn't recall after the first verse without assistance.

Everyone in the Corps of Cadets has to learn it their first week on campus. Forty one years later it is still burned into my brain like the Hotel California lyrics.

I sometimes mix up my kids' names, but I will never forget a single word of Tech Triumph. Short of advanced Alzheimer's, I will also never forget the 8 pylons or the Medal of Honor winners' names from the Cenotaph.

Deposit whiskey, receive wisdom.

I was assuming lots of us, but I only know the first verse by heart, I would stumble through the 2nd. I learned it because it's our song.

Every HT and at least 95% of non-band Corps alumni and cadets do

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

To be fair, I never learned the words to Tech Triumph. Never needed to, I just know how to play trumpet.

[Verse 1]
Techmen, we're Techmen, with spirit true and faithful,
Backing up our teams with hopes undying;
Techmen, oh, Techmen, we're out to win today,
Showing "pep" and life with which we're trying;
VP, old VP, you know our hearts are with you
In our luck which never seems to die;
Win or lose, we'll greet you with a glad returning,
You're the pride of VPI.

[Chorus]
Just watch our men so big and active
Support the Orange and Maroon. Let's go Techs.
We know our ends and backs are stronger,
With winning hopes, we fear defeat no longer.
To see our team plow through the line, boys.
Determined now to win or die:
So give a Hokie, Hokie, Hokie, Hi,
Rae, Ri, old VPI.

[Verse 2]
Fight, men, oh, fight, men, we're going to be the champions
Adding to our list another victory;
Football or baseball, the games in which we star,
They're the sports which made old VP famous.
Hold'em, just hold'em, you know the Corps' behind you
Watching every movement that you make.
Winning games was nothing for our teams before you—
Keep the "rep" for VP's sake.

It's definitely old timey. Debuted in 1919

Really impressed with a lot of her answers. I think she has done a great job balancing gratitude and appreciation for Marquette and those players, respecting what has already been built at VT, and projecting to the future of what can be built.

Danny is always open

We always talk about winning the press conference, and Coach Duffy certainly did that!

The classiness to thank Marquette, the classiness to acknowledge Kenny Brooks and what he built, to address the players who were staying, and then to make a point to shoutout Cayla and Liz that they are always welcome around the program.

I hope she has success, but I'm optimistic about the teams future and hope that she can keep it going!

LMAO at Whit's "No name on the back? Tight budget..." for the jersey

I have to keep reminding myself that it's only women's college basketball and the kids have to do what they think is best for them. But I also take it personally when anyone considers Virginia Tech for any sport and any major and decides to go somewhere else. Have to take a deep breath and be a well adjusted adult.

I actually have no issues with the players. It sucks but I get it. I don't even have as much issue with Kenny about the job. It's the way he chose to do it and they way they continue to be doing it because you can't tell me that Hassett, Amoore and Strack announcing the same day the new coach was hired wasn't a news cycle hatchet job on the part of Brooks.

regarding the players (Amore specifically, Strack to a lesser extent, not the signees) I have a different perspective. With Georgia following Kenny she's missing out on the opportunity to show she can win without him. She's going pro - that's a foregone conclusion, so she has the ability to focus on winning a title and not worry about draft stock. She's had 2 cracks at the NCAAT under Kenny and couldn't make it happen. What does she think is going to happen in another conference with a team under a rebuild? I the opportunity at Kentucky even on-par with what is left at Tech after Kenny raided the place? Or is this just about money?

If Kenny gets all the pieces (Blue/Silva) and is able to add a couple more tough Forwards in the portal it's likely Kentucky is a better team talent wise than the Hokies next year barring Duffy pulling the two Marquette portal players in with her. Whether that talent comes together to win in the SEC is another question. He won't have to deal with two thirds of the top players at LSU and there are still rumors Staley may choose to retire and go into broadcasting if they win the championship this season. If that happens, Kenny's toughest competition is likely Texas next year. SCar would likely still be loaded but who knows with the portal if Staley leaves. SEC is very top heavy on the WBB side.

Edit: and if Kentucky's NIL money is so much better I would expect Kenny will be able to pull in top portal talent. Would not put it past him to try for the two Marquette players too.

My question is will Amoore actually include those new players in Kenny and her system? She has Strack in the Kitley role for the 2 man game. Who will she actually defer to other than Strack? She played too much hero ball at the end of the season without Kitley, even with Strack on the court. I feel like this was probably the worst career move for her (I could be completely wrong) and I just don't think she will see anymore success in March than she did at Tech.

If Kenny has Silva and Strack on the court then they will use the High low plays you saw from Kitley and Strack. I do think Hassett will play very similar to how Traylor played for Hokies last year and Amoore integrated with Traylor pretty well. The piece that is Questionable is the Ekh/King role in the offense. Blue offers that but curious if Kenny will put her in as a freshman for significant minutes and Strack and Silva can both shoot the three which stretches defenses and could allow Amoore to get to the rim cleanly.

So my girlfriend and I were talking about HVL and the possibility of her landing at Kentucky which I don't think will happen because she wants to be a number one in an offense. I have no idea what duffy's style of play is but what if she picked up HVL? I know the thought is that Wenzel stayed because she wants to start right away, so this is what my reply to my girlfriend was " I think wenzel will start but likely not at point, run a three small two big line up with HVL at point, Wenzel and Eck at your wings, with a big and Micheaux". What are yall thoughts on a line up like that?

He said give to me Roscoe

Assuming the existing roster comes back (which sounds like is likely at this point), without projecting transfers this is what I would expect:
1: Nelson/Suffren/Wenzel
2/3: Wenzel/Ekh/Baker
4: Baker/Micheaux/Hazelton
5: Micheaux/Hazelton

With 8 open scholarships (I bet we fill 6 and leave 2 open) I expect we look to add another wing or two, and add someone who is a true 5. I will be interested to see if Micheaux fits better as a 4 in Duffy's system than she did in Kenny's.

I see HZL as a volume shooter and below average distributor, so not really sure she would fit on our current projected roster heading into next year, either as a 1 or a 2.

Tech wasn't all that special after Kitley went out. If Brooks took the entire Tech roster over to Kentucky they still aren't going to be world beaters next season.

As crazy as it sounds, I think a lot of people are actually underestimating how integral Kitley was to Tech's status as an elite program. VT wasn't going to go to the Final 4 next season, under any scenario, not without Kitley. And Kentucky ain't going to the Final 4 next year either.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me.

I really think you are underestimating Strack's ability on the court.

And yes Kitley was a big single player but Kenny would now have three players in a frontcourt 6'4 or taller so won't be reliant on a big game from one. He will have four or five high volume scorers putting up points.

But none of those players even approximates having the 3-time ACC Player of the year on your team. VT was going to take a step back next year, for a 100% certainty. I'm not saying we wouldn't have been good, but we weren't going to be top 10 good.

Elizabeth Kitley wasn't going to be walking through that door.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me.

I don't think you're wrong Kitley was critical to the team... at the same time we were bringing in unprecedented size and talent into the roster so yeah maybe not a final four team next year but a higher floor and ceiling in the coming years.

All that said I'm pumped to see what Duffy can do the cabinet isn't bare and she's got some time to fill a few holes.

Are you referring to his first year or this coming year?

I don't think it matters what personnel KB has, his finesse style of play won't win him an SEC or NCAA title. Period. The officiating in WCBB is so atrocious that a physical team will almost always have an upper hand in most games, even one's where there is some talent discrepancy. He hasn't shown the ability to adjust in this way, so there's no reason to suggest he has the ability to do so.

I could be wrong, of course. But that is my take.

Is coronavirus over yet?

The officiating in WCBB is so atrocious that a physical team will almost always have an upper hand in most games

This is the craziest thing to me since I have been watching a lot more WCBB the last couple years, is how much they will let them just beat each other up. I have seen several no calls where it would be a flagrant foul in the men's game and it is just insane.

It was crazy the amount of elbows I saw Liz take to the head where a foul wasn't called. When you look at mens, feels like any head contact at least is reviewed

you can't tell me that Hassett, Amoore and Strack announcing the same day the new coach was hired wasn't a news cycle hatchet job on the part of Brooks.

Yep, everything he has done since this all started has been slimy. It calls into question everything he has preached up to this point, and it all looks like a load of shit.

Turns out there's probably not a graceful way to leave and take all your players with you.

You coordinate your exit and sneak out the back. It's not going to be a good look.

Well at least his staff knows how to say good bye

Did you tag Kenny in a retweet?

I liked this quote by Duffy: "I've been a winner; I don't know anything else..."

she acknowledged her time at marquette and gave them a respectful parting. i was waiting for this, glad to see it.

I been here since day 0.

Whit even thanked Marquette for their professionalism in negotiating with her. I also thought it was pretty telling that he repeatedly stated that Duffy was a good fit because of her honestly and loyalty

If you can't handle my shit posts, you don't deserve my memes

I hate that, she's a good fit because she wins. We want a culture of winning and she wins, pure and simple, that's why she's a good fit.

Note: I'm not saying we should hire an abusive coach that wins or anything like that there is more to fit, but honedt and loyalty are not high on that list, winning recruiting to a small town, fan engagement, you know the actual job.

I like to read it as more a dig at Kenny, but I think there has to be a certain type of coach to succeed in Blacksburg. Outside of the limitations of the department, the school is isolated from major cities and resources, but I know when I stepped on campus, it did just feel right. The whole "This Is Home" thing can sound corny and can be hard to sell, but for some people it really is true. I think you need a coach that can understand that, can trust the environment around them, and find the players that also feel that way in order to mesh and be successful as a whole. Sure you could plop Mulkey in and bring in star players, but do you think they'd stay and have consistent success? Maybe. But I really think the environment and who Duffy is is a reason why we haven't seen the mass exodus (at least the way I expected).

If you can't handle my shit posts, you don't deserve my memes

agree, buzz won at bburg because he was a good fit for the environment, but he wasn't loyal to VT and that's okay.

I took it as a dig at Brooks as well, just the way he emphasized it.

The part at the end where she says the donuts (Carol Lee?) have been great but asks people to stop sending them to her lol

Every second counts

I had forgotten how good these donuts were. Used to go in right before they closed and get 12 donuts for the price of one

oh, you still pay the price, just not in dollars...

Now you can get random grab bags for 1.5 or yesterdays doughnuts for real cheap.

For those who have lined near a Shoppers Food Warehouse, their Colossal Doughnuts were my favorite. It was our go to on Sunday's after church. Sadly, they closed years ago and I miss those doughnuts dearly and my church attendance is a direct reflection of it.

Krispy Kreme was the spot for donuts today. They had eclipse donuts.

The totality in Dallas was amazing. It was super trippy. Anyone else in the path today?

95% in Huntington. It didn't feel like 95%.

The difference between 99% and totality is literally night and day. Even at 99% you can't look at it without glasses. It's kind of like the Grand Canyon, you can tell someone how great it is and show pictures, but nothing does it justice other than experiencing it.

Yeah, I was in Christiansburg for the last one a few years ago. Don't remember what the percentage coverage was for that one, but it was similar. You get the spooky light, things look weird, but it's not dark. It's cool, but not awe-inspiring or anything.

I spent two years living in the apartments right behind Carol Lee. It was dangerous. But a dozen donuts for like $6 made for great tailgate food for all the nooner games we had

If you can't handle my shit posts, you don't deserve my memes

The dozen donuts I bought for the office yesterday were $16. Times have really changed.

As someone who makes a point to try out new donut places, a dollar each is pretty good. Carol Lee is just a goddamn bargain
