NCAA Women's Basketball

Hokies were ranked 13th in the final poll prior to Tournament Selections. If the rankings mirror selections, Hokies would be a 4 seed in Stanfords bracket. Currently there would be no #1 or #2 seeds from the ACC as Notre Dame is #9 and NC St is #11 so they would be 3 seeds.

Notre Dame would likely be in Iowas bracket and NC ST in USCs bracket.

Syracuse and Louisville are both looking as likely 6 seeds at 22 and 24 in the rankings.

Obviously committee will likely vary somewhat but this gives everyone a starting point on what to expect.

I wouldn't expect any word from VT on Liz's status until after Selection Sunday other than rehabbing and looking out for her health and safety. Same story as this past week.

Go Hokies!!

Just as long as Blacksburg hosts again and my season tickets get me my second NCAA hosting tickets in a row.

Notre Dame loses by 4 with Hidalgo forced to miss half of the second quarter because the officials ordered the removal of her nose piercing she had left in for every game so far. ๐Ÿคท obviously it shouldn't have been in but pretty convenient timing from officials. If it was an issue why wasn't she instructed to remove it at the beginning of the game. ACC now down to NC St and Duke, neither will be favored to make the elite 8.

they should have allowed her to remove her nose ring at half-time.

Apparently rule says remove after next break. But suspicious that this is the first time this year it was called out.

Meh - I dont have too much heartburn for someone who had been breaking the rules the entire year having to follow them.

Apparently she has already stated that she will wear it next year as well. I hope every ref next year makes her take it out. She is trying to be the exception to the rule. And yes, I would feel the same way if my NIL offer of Hardee's coupons and a free oil change is accepted and she comes here.

Depends on how you define break then. If it's next whistle or next end of period. Either way if it was a point of emphasis it should have been inspected before the game started. Not DURING a Sweet 16 game.

The Mulkey article popped up in my "recommended links" this afternoon. I haven't paid for WaPo access to read it, but I recall that some here were anticipating the article.

I read it today. I mean it wasn't glowing but it didn't read like a hit piece that one should be pre-emptively threatening legal action.

It basically said she is gets great production out of her teams but if you can't help her, do something she disagrees with, or question her she will drop you and never speak to you again. That includes her Dad and sister. Shitty person who wins a lot of games essentially which I think most here already felt that way about her.

Yep, basically she's just super obsessed with her own image and will cut you in a second if you take away from her, whether it be athletes or family. Nothing bombshell, just that she's a trash human. Which in her eyes is a civil offense if you call her out on it, I guess.

All they did was say the quiet part out loud, and provide some supporting evidence.

Nothing anyone didn't already pretty much get.

They will also have all there facts straight so unless she wants to bring even more attention to the article she should let it be.

I think it's called the Streisand Effect. By trying to stop the article she's drawn more attention to it. More people will read it now just to see what all the fuss was about than if she had just kept her trap shut.

Yeah, it was a pretty standard profile. It's well written, it's worth the read, I can't imagine what she heard that got her so steamed up about it though. The maybe not being supportive of gay players things? Maybe she was just mad that the reporter had talked to estranged family? Wild reaction to a pretty middle of the road piece.

The same writer did a similar piece on Brian Kelly which Mulkey considered a "hit piece" so she was of that thinking based on that. I tend to agree with Alum07 below though that there are probably way more bones in the closet and expect that she now will have several writers take up that case.

Its a fucking crime that the McDonnell-Douglas mindset of cutting costs at the expense of safety won out over Boeing's internal mindset after the 'merger'. MD went out of business because nobody trusted them and Boeing was king of the airline industry when that happened, and the need to maximize shareholder dividends over making sure their planes were engineered safe to fly has completely destroyed that once great company.

Yeah it was pretty evenly called but Clark had her shot on from outside. Only a 5 free throw differential in the game. She hit more threes on less shots than the entire LSU team.

LSU really has no excuses. They took 19 more shots than Iowa and won the rebounding battle by 18. They shot 40% in the paint which is where they typically dominate.

@VTnerf on insta, @BuryHokie on twitter, #ThanksFrank

Yes, correct- and my point that you missed is that she won't draw 1/100th of this playing for the DC Mystics on a random friday night. Where is the value for mcdonlds on a mystic game that doesn't even register a rating on TV?

I think you are missing the value of social media and how people can make millions on instagram posting every day content. College basketball was the catapult to her following, but the following isnt going away. She will still get millions of views for sponsored posts.

She has become a national celebrity, and if the Kardashians have taught us anything.... Fame sells.

Danny is always open

Again, it's not about her being on tv in a uniform, it's about her as a person and influencer. She's still a draw for Coach even when not playing in front of millions. You aren't the demographic they are targeting. And tv isn't the main media source they are pushing their advertising on.

My point about the TV rating is a LOT of people tuned in because she and CC were playing. More than for every NBA game last year. The eyeballs are shifting. TV contracts are shifting. Viewing habits are shifting. But there was enough cache with her and CC to draw a 12million share.

As for the McD's value, billboards, signage around the arena, signs in the restaurants. Plenty of NBA guys not pulling huge ratings are splashed all over in advertisements. If they believe she, as herself, brings value, they will pay her. They aren't trying to draw you to Wing Stop of Amazon, but plenty of others that may view her as someone they would follow.

This is a different argument, and I don't disagree

You mean e$pn and the other networks set this up? By only talking and pushing CC and Reese for over a year straight and not headlining anyone else it left viewers/sportsfans no choice but to tune in to see what all the hype is about. What financial and economic impact do you think that had???
It's trash, the networks are trash, the teams and players they are marketing are trash. Sure CC is a sharpshooter, no doubt about that. Her post game is trash and she got the princess treatment from the refs all season. Like DC, I can't wait until both if them are buried in obscurity in the wnba or whatever. Then we'll have to suffer through the next revelation of network chosen princesses. ๐Ÿคฎ

I think time will tell on how many endorsements end after the College career. I am actually with DC on this in that I think the majority will evaporate.

I actually think Reese will continue to have a decent NIL as she and Flaujae Johnson get a lot of following for fashion, music and other activities outside of basketball. Clark is one that I think sees her numbers fall off as basketball is basically all she is followed for. Olympics/Big3/WNBA might mitigate some of that but not as much as the others.

Officials handed the game to Iowa repeatedly 18 fouls to 9. 4 free throws to 14 and repeatedly took the ball away from UCONN in key moments. Down by one with less than ten seconds, UCONN advanced the ball and was taking it to the basket to score when the officials called a moving screen that JUST WASN'T there.

That moving screen call was brutal. UConn had all the momentum there. Ref needs to swallow the whistle in that situation.

Every second counts

Danny is always open

This is where I don't understand the women's game. Technically that was a moving screen. But in the spirit of allowing the girls to practice for their rugby events under the facade of playing a basketball game, I have so many questions as to why that was called in that moment.

It seems clear to me that with all the hype around the women's game right now the powers that be simply couldn't afford a final game without Caitlin Clark.

Is coronavirus over yet?

I agree that the womens reffing is wildly inconsistent and borders on brawling at some points. However, on the scale of moving screens with 0 being a legal screen, 10 being a football blindside block, 3 being 99% of screens with some motion but more in an "I am inconveniently in your way as you try to go past", this was probably a 7

Danny is always open

Yeah this one was a foul but it wasn't the 10 or 12 other times on both sides during this game. Really wish officials were graded, held accountable and required to do additional training if not meeting whatever standard the NCAA sets (NCAA and standards in same sentence pretty much kills it) but no league or the NCAA has publicly done anything to improve their officials and it continues to be an embarrassing news story year on year. It's hard to know game to game what rules to expect calls on. I get they are human but when they consistently show they are inconsistent then you would expect the people paying them would want to see improvement.

Rob Peterson
VTCC

All you have to do is go back and review the stats from any Iowa game that is/was perceived as being a tough or close contest and that will tell all you need to know. Almost every game that could or was close, the amount of fouls called against the opposing team was very disproportionate to the ones called against Iowa. Also the amount of free throws awarded to Iowa versus the opponent was always (except in one case i seen) lopsided.
In games where you would expect Iowa to win handily, the fouls and free throw ratio is virtually even in those contests.
I did not look at every single game but I looked at enough to see that there was ref bias and/or favoritism
