2023-24 Hokie Hoops Statistical Notes: Volume IX (The Tardy Edition)

The Men's Team

The Hokies roared into the ACC tournament, riding a three game win streak to get to .500 on the season. We were worried that dead last was an option, and now we've earned the first round bye (which is probably about what should be expected)

CMY led the Hokies to his 91st win, now sitting alone in 7th among VT coaches, and depending on how the post-season goes this year, he could be sitting at 3rd by the end of next season (needs 110), a particularly great season (26 wins) and he would have the most wins among VT coaches over 6 years.

Scoring

Hokies were scoring in bunches, led by Sean Pedulla's 19 ppg, but he had company in the double figures club, joined by Kidd's 16, Cattoor's 13.5, and Collins' 11. Throw in Nickel's/Poteat's 7.75 each, and Beran's 7, and we can see why the Hokies are having success when their top 7 averaged a combined 82 ppg. Toss in Rechsteiner, Young, and Wessler and we're topping 85 per.

Rebounding

Over this four game window, the Hokies still struggled, pulling down 30.25 rebounds per game. Note: My stats do not include deadball rebounds, only those that stay in play. Not that those deadball rebounds helped too much, as we finished in the bottom 50 in the country in rebounding.

Kidd pulled down 8.7 per game, Beran 4.8, Pedulla 4.5, Poteat and Collins 3.75, Nickel 3.25, Wessler 2.5, Cattoor 1.75, Rechsteiner 0.5. Camden 0.

We need a big that can attack the boards consistently to have a prayer next year.

Assists/Turnovers/Steals

Ball protection was a thing here, as the Hokies went 61:35 in the ATO margin, adjusted down with a stellar 25 steals to 61:10

The following Hokies finished with an AATO of better than n:0. Cattoor, Collins, Pedulla, Young, Nickel. They combined for an AATO of 43:-2

In the positive, we had Kidd, Beran, and Wessler combining for an AATO of 15:6.

That's 8 Hokies through 4 games, getting an AATO of 58:4

Only Poteat had an AATO in the negative with 3:6.

Rechsteiner and Camden didn't record an assist, turnover, nor steal.

Experience/Depth

11 Hokies got minutes, led by Collins' 37.25 mpg, followed by Pedulla's 35.75 and Cattoor's 35.5 in the 30 minute club. 20+ minutes were earned by Beran (27.75), Kidd (24), and Nickel (21.75). Poteat had 13.5 per game. Wessler added 6.5 per, followed by Young's 6.3 and Rechsteiner's 4 minutes per game. Camden added the last minute.

Next Window

The ACC Tournament and then on to either the NCAA tournament or NIT.

Prediction

We can probably get one win in the ACC tournament, which won't get us in the dance, but might get us into the NIT. There are so many middling ACC teams that not getting a win in DC probably ends our season.

The Women's Team.

This was a dark window in Blacksburg, as the Women's team went a paltry 1-3 with two losses to Notre Dame and a close loss to UVA, with two of those losses coming without 3x ACC Player of the Year and probable All-American Liz Kitley.

Scoring

All-ACC first-teamer Georgia Amoore led the Hokies with 27.5 ppg. Only playing in two games, Kitley came in 2nd at 16 ppg. Nobody else managed a basket per quarter. Strack was the leader there, with 6 points per game, followed by King's 5.75 per. Summiel was the only other to average a basket per half at 4 ppg. Ekh has disappeared to 3 ppg, matched by Baker. Wenzel scored 2.25 per and Micheaux reappeared at 1.5 points per game.

Rebounding

Kitley averaged the most boards (9 per), but for the first time in probably 5 years, she didn't have the most over a window. Olivia Summiel, off of the only double-double of the frame, pulled down 31 total rebounds, averaging 7.75 per. Strack also pulled down a respectable 5.5 boards per game; joined by Ekh's 4.25 in averaging one per quarter. Micheaux averaged 3, followed by Baker/King's 2.75, and Amoore/Wenzel's 2 per.

Assists/Turnovers/Steals
Unlike the men, the women were not protective of the ball, giving up 51 turnovers to just 49 assists. Can't say much more than that.

Experience/Depth

All 10 Hokies who earned minutes this year played this window. Amoore averaged 37.5 mpg, followed by 31.75 and Kitley's 31. Ekh earned 26.25 mpg, followed by Summiel's 23.75 and Strack's 21.5 earning most of the minutes.

Baker got 19 per game, more than Wenzel's 16.5, and Micheaux put in 13 mpg in her first minutes in 10 games.

Samyha Suffren put up the remaining 6 total minutes in one appearance.

Next Window

March Madness is Here. Hopefully Liz Kitley is, too.
