Comes to Hokies from Maryland where he was Receivers Coach/Passing Game Coordinator. Started coaching as a Strength and Conditioning coach at Wake Forest in 1986 after being a WR at Wake from 83-86.

Did GA work at Ole Miss and has coached at East Tessessee, Northwest Mississippi, Marshall, North Carolina, Oklahoma St, Ole Miss, Louisville and a year in the NFL with the Eagles as a Receivers Coach.

A longtime wide receivers coach, Brewer gained the reputation of an elite receivers coach, coaching the likes of Randy Moss, Dez Bryant, and Biletnikoff Award winner Justin Blackmon.[1]

from his Wiki page.

This could be a huge hire for the Hokies. 38 years of coaching in an admin role. Pry keeps attracting talent.

Damn why did he settle for an off field recruiting role? Feels like a big step back?

He is about to be 60 so might be the retire to the country job.

Can he analyze film?

Bigger question, how's he feel about the jet sweep?

He replaces outgoing Director of High School Relations David Wooderson.

Quality comment.

I guess it was alright alright alright

I'm here for the memes, I just stay for the football.

Did I read somewhere that James Johnson (formerly of basketball) is currently in this position?

Yes, they hired him a couple years ago (I think). Great guy, great Hokie, just not a fit as a D1 hoops coach.

Edit: It was last year. From his HokieSports bio... "He was appointed to the Director of High School Relations role in the summer of 2023."

James Johnson is still in the athletic department, they'll both have the same title and will be working alongside each other.

JJ can focus on BB and Gunter can focus on Football?

No, JJ is on the football staff as Director of HS Relations. He and Brewer are under the same role.

IDK about this. I've always said "if you've got 2 Directors of High School Relations, you've got none"

But actually, this seems like a good hire. As did the James Johnson one last year - the consensus seems to be he's a likeable guy and will do well in this role. Glad to see the support staff continuing to grow.

At Virginia Tech, post 1999 it NEVER hurts to have a proven offensive guy on the staff. NEVER hurts. We have been allergic to good offense for the most part the past 30 years. This is a great addition.

Even though he is not a field coach, is he allowed to sit in the receivers room and go over film with the receivers?

Life is good.

I don't think there are any rules about who's allowed to be in the room. Also, nothing stops him from having conversations with Mines.

Deposit whiskey, receive wisdom.

Anyone else see this as a possible insurance hire? Mines has proven himself again and again and people are taking notice, so we hire a proven WR coach in a role to recruit and have strong connections to players so if Mines does end up getting poached away we have a strong replacement in the wings.

He said give to me Roscoe

I think it would have to be pretty big to pull Mines away, and we would fight to keep him to great lengths I imagine. Word is he and his family really love Blacksburg and being able to work in VA.

I see it as the opposite. I think Brewer is just nearing retirement and is probably tired of being an on-field coach and spending so much time on the road recruiting. This allows him to take a step back from that and utilize the coaching and recruiting network he has built over decades with less of a daily grind like a coaching job. But doesn't hurt to have his ideas and input either, and shows Pry has an environment that good coaches from outside want to come work within.
