OT: Week 2 - Other Games

I'll have to take a look again, but this week's slate of games isn't TOO exciting from what I remember.

Texas @ Michigan probably being the most prominent, but that does nothing for me.

edit: I suppose Georgia tech @ Syracuse can be an interesting watch.

Iowa-Iowa State is always a tough one too.

Tennessee @ NC State..

aaaand I hope New Mexico beats the shit outta Liberty.

Hey hey, let's welcome our buddies SMU to the acc shit show, they looked pretty bad again in a loss to BYU last night.

Outside of the obvious, which games are you guys most looking forward to today?

Tbh Syracuse/GT ought to be interesting (and is so far). And Colorado/Nebraska. Love to see old rivalries renewed. The big one is obviously Mich/Texas. Pretty surprised at how much orange there is in that stadium tbh

Warning- Filter lost.

Sark is easily the best play caller in cfb for the last 5 years.

You think he's a better play caller than Lane? Ryan Day (on offense)?

Yes and yes. They all have their strengths and faults, but he schemes guys open as good as Lane, but his offenses tend to still work when they face elite comp more consistently than Lane's.

I've never seen an offense more inevitable than 2020 Bama, and 2019 Bama was statistically almost identical to 2019 LSU before Tua broke his hip, and all three of his Texas offenses have been largely great as well, despite having to use his backup QB for chunks of his first two years.

I think highly of all three play-callers.

I think Sarkisian is the most consistent putting together a really great offense game to game and play to play. I think Day is better for one off games when he has more time to game plan (see the UGA playoff game a couple years ago). But he also throws out some real stinker play calls getting away from what's working where he seems to try and out think the opposing DC

"That move was slicker than a peeled onion in a bowl of snot." -Mike Burnop

That's a good explanation for how I feel about Day. For me, he's the most prone to overthinking. Lane is the easiest to shut down, but to be fair, this usually happens when he is at a notable talent disadvantage (UGA or Bama are the most notable examples, he got after Saban's defense in 2020... and then Bama was substantially more prepared come 21 and 22). Sark sometimes has mid-game lulls past the script (at Texas, his Bama offenses rarely lulled).

That's a good point about Lane Kiffin. I think we saw how good he is with elite talent at Alabama. He was the one who constructed what their offense looked like for a decade (even after he left). They put up points basically every game.
And that's true with Sarkisian. He definitely gets cute sometimes, especially if there isn't a huge talent mismatch. Today has looked pretty good because they're more talented, he had a good game plan, and Michigan's offense is awful.

"That move was slicker than a peeled onion in a bowl of snot." -Mike Burnop

Yes this my thought too. It's interesting that all three still call plays (well, Day until this season) despite being head coaches.

That Bowling Green coaches name is familiar! /s

Let's see if Clemson comes out angry or moping against App State. Not the type of team Tigers can afford to sleepwalk on.

Pitt looking like a pile of poo so far against Cincinnati.

Iowa Iowa State should be a good one.

I wonder when the donors in Stillwater start to sniff around elsewhere.

... maybe they bring in Fuente lol

I was thinking about this the other day when I saw an interview of Gundy. He's been there 20 years this coming January. That's insane. I mean, he has been fairly competitive for the most of it though: 7-6 5 times. 4-7 his first year was the only time they didn't reach bowl eligibility. With 8 10+ win seasons in there. He may not be winning championships, but that dude has them at or near the top of their conference more often than not.

Oklahoma State currently doesn't have an answer

I was in tulsa for work yesterday visiting a vendor with a lot of osu grads... before the tour I asked if the hardhats have QR codes and got a good laugh

Danny is always open

Don't look now, but Syracuse is on pace to put up 600 yards of offense on GT.

And making it look EASY

Is coronavirus over yet?

I haven't been watching, but I am guessing Syracuse is looking sharp? Not great news for us lol.

They are. It really looks like OSU/Texas (someone with a solid RPO, with spread mixed in, offense) going against a MAC team or something.

It's really interesting how first year coaches can get an OL to play decently; how those coaches can be creative and exploit things in the opposition; how those coaches can create a culture of competition so quickly........

Is coronavirus over yet?

I see it every single year. And it drives me nuts

Onward and upward

And yet here, coaches coach the same.

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Grant Wells, Braxton Burmeister, Ryan Willis, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

Honestly

I'm not sure if I take stock in Syracuse yet, mainly because I don't take stock in GTs win over FSU. But we'll see ..

I think GT is a good team (they look fairly disciplined and physical). How good? Not sure, but they will make some noise this year even if they lose to Syracuse.

Is coronavirus over yet?

This is my thought. I'm in wait and see mode.

Michigan is not having a good time, lol

Syracuse is good at football. Low key brutal stretch for us with GT, Syracuse, Clemson back-to-back-to-back.

Man our fanbase would be having a meltdown for the ages over how Arkansas has gone out of their way to keep Okie State in this game. It shouldn't be close.

It actually cannot be overstated how unbelievably hard Arkansas have tried to lose this game from every angle possible.

...Only to narrowly hit a tying field goal as time expires (which almost expired on the previous play because they didn't spike it and ran a play)

The Fighting Leftys of Bowling Green almost made it Unhappy Valley. With an onside kick with under a minute left gotta give them credit for hanging in there. Surely wasn't a fluke.

I don't like Texas. I don't. But I do love watching Michigan get pummeled.

Hoping Arkansas and Tulane can pull out these two games but it looks like both are in the process of letting it go.

GT ended up making it a pretty good game. KState and Tulsa is a good one, and Arkansas/OkSt is fun to watch too (tied w/ 2 left).

So much for a bland week! God I love college football.

What happened to Pitt Defense? They won but gave up over 20.

Tulane absolutely robbed by the refs. WR gets jammed at LOS and they call a pick on the WR. Takes a TD off the board.

These early games have actually been really good. Further proof Franklin can't Gameday coach, the ACC has lots of sneaky decent teams, Michigan isn't nearly as good as people thought there was no reload there,

Definitely looking more like a rebuild. At times they still look sharp on defense, but nowhere close to last year's level.

However, I think they'd be in a much better spot if they had planned better at QB. They could have used a portal QB. Jadyn Davis is probably the future, but the staff must feel he's not ready.

Pitt with the nice comeback.

Greenies get screwed. Not sure their guy actually scored on the play but offensive PI (pick) on a chuck at the LOS?

Sam Pittman attended the Mike London school of clock management.

Boy he really almost screwed the pooch there didn't he?

Oh FFS ND just win already

Cal/Auburn isn't bad either.

Cal just missed a chip shot FG that would have given the 3 point lead.

Auburn is getting some home cooking on calls. Still down to Cal though.

If they're in a conference it's irrelevant.

This is a big deal for them.

I think we need to talk about the horrific spot on NIUs final drive.

3 and 2 and the run clearly is at least a yard past the line to gain and the official runs in and marks it a foot short.

NIU still nails the FG, but if that spot is placed correctly, they win with a walk-off FG.

Deion parlayed changing the world at Jackson State into a giant hilarious money grab at desperate Colorado.

And I'm all for it.

This new era of paying college players 6-7 figures to transfer to your school is going to get old, and quick.

We obviously overpaid in some spots (I won't mention where exactly), and now as I watch NCSU, Grayson McCall has not been as advertised. But guess what? The fanbase will have to ante up again next year to build and keep a roster together. This is not a tenable situation for most schools.

Alabama going on upset alert. USF just scored a TD; going for 2 to try and tie in the 3rd quarter.

Edit: after a penalty they took the PAT.
14-13 Tide

I'm loving the Colorado beat down by Nebraska.

Alabama fumbled the snap on 2nd and goal, USF recovered.

Alabama still up 14-13 with 13:44 left in the 4th

wake wr has to dive on that fumble instead of trying to advance

Simultaneously very impressed by USF and think Bama threw away a lot of possessions with fumbles and penalties. When they stopped doing that... you get this final score.
