The Ladies host the SMU Mustangs today at 2 PM. The game will be on the ACCNextra platform. The Mustangs are 10-12, 2-8 in the ACC. Their two ACC wins were an overtime win at Syracuse and Stanford at home. They lost at home to UNC, Duke and Louisville and on the road to FSU, Pitt, Notre Dame, Miami, and Cal. For comparison, we lost to FSU, Notre Dame, and Duke. We beat Pitt, Miami and Louisville. Our record is 14-7, 5-5. We are on a two-game losing streak; they are on a six-game losing streak.
SMU is a mature team; they will probably start 2 juniors, 2 seniors and a grad student. #3 5'7 junior guard Nyah Robertson is their leading scorer at 19.5 ppg. #33 6' 1 senior forward Chantae Embry is the only other double-digit scorer at 11.7 ppg; but she has not played recently. #35 6' 2 senior center Jessica Peterson contributes 9.8 points and 12.2 rebounds per game. The other starters based on the last two games are likely to be #1 5'5 grad student Zanai Jones; #2 6'1 guard junior TK Pitts, and #4 6'0 senior forward Kaysia Woods. Other likely players are #24 5'10 junior guard Donavia Hall; #22 5'11 soph guard Kylie Marshall; and #13 6'2 senior forward Sandra Magalico

SMU only scores 66.2 ppg while giving up 68. They only shoot 37.9% overall and 28.9% from three. They do win the rebounding battle by 2.2 rebounds per game. They average 12.7 assists and 15.9 TOs per game. They have allowed their opponents to shoot 39.7% overall and 32.3% from three.

LET'S GO HOKIES!

Comments
go hokies!
My niece is dancing during pregame. But, I don't hold out much hope of them being shown on tv. Hoping to catch a glimpse though. Otherwise, going to have to rely on family members for video; they're attending.
Had trouble getting the game up on ESPN+. Got to watch the ladies clamp down to open up the score.
25-13 after the first quarter.
Wenzel and Rechsteiner are carbon copies when it comes to taking care of the basketball
...and again throws it away
So sloppy with the ball this quarter
Just tuned in, to see that it is halftime. At least we are up!
Just trying to play to fast
Wow ...letting SMU just grab people but goes the other way on other end.
Their one guard keeps blowing by our guards but then pulls up before going to the rim. If she would just take it in this would be a different game.
We would be way ahead if we would stop making really bad passes.
Yep. Just throwing it away. Good thing they haven't hit their wide open threes too. Keep losing coverage and giving them open shots.
...and now they are hitting them.
A lot better than the 2nd but still alot of disconnect
Refs letting them be Uber physical on inbounds passes
How many inbounds passes have we tried or have thrown away today?
Seems like they went to sleep and now trying to throw it away
Biscuits
Biscuits!
Edit: Glug glug
Thank SMU for not letting the clock run in a lost cause.
Somewhere Juwan Howard is smiling...
FAM!

We are now "on the right side" of the WBB bubble per e$Pn. So if we win our conference tournament we should actually be in.......
It is Groundhog Day.
We are 15-7 (6-5), 9th in the ACC and 2.5 games out of the double-bye.
Our remaining games are: v Syracuse (8-13, 2-8), @UVA (12-11, 4-7), @UNC (20-4, 8-3), v Stanford (11-10, 3-7), v Cal, (19-4, 7-3), @BC (13-11, 4-7), and @Clem (11-11, 4-7).
If we beat just the teams with losing conference records, we'd finish 20-9, 10-7 in conference. 20 wins isn't completely out of the cards.
1. Duffy's doing a fantastic job, considering we didn't have enough scholarship players to form a starting lineup when she got here.
2. Imagine what this team can do when they have more experience and a true 5 down low, and the quality of the incoming freshmen.
3. While I doubt we can get to the double-bye, I do think a bye is absolutely achievable. Hopefully, something better than the 8/9 game.
Actually, after today's result, we are 6-5. We "should" be able to finish 5-2 for a 11-7 conference record (20-9 overall).
Don't want the 8/9 slot for sure. Win that to face Notre Dame. Highly unlikely to advance further.
I just found out that they only let top 15 teams play in ACCT... kinda crazy that we have reached a point where teams can miss their own conference tournament
The Big East was like this, and VT missed the conference tourney every year except their last one in the conference.
Right, and the fact we were fucked by that league in hoops - denied membership and then asked to pay millions while other teams were not- I'm sure had no bearing on our struggles. I loved beating Beoheim in the ACC- fucking prick - so fucking overrated doing less with more for 40 years, but wanted to kill VT basketball. Fuck that guy a million ways to Sunday.
Definitely. The Metro -> A10 -> BE journey in the 90s was rough and not being accepted in all sports in 91 and again in 94 by the BE was downright criminal.
I blame Louisville and Paterno- 100%. If Louisville weren't scum looking out only for themselves, the Metro could have been the foundation of a great hoops league. If Paterno would have listened to Pitt and Bobby Bowden, we would have been part of a legit BE football conference and would have come out on top in the ACC poaching war. FSU, VT, PSU, WVU, Louisville, Pitt- that is better than UNC, Duke, Wake, etc. But Joepa wanted to stay independent- so fuck him too.
Have to find a way to avenge the UVA loss. Really hoping we don't get swept by them and that the loss to them doesn't end up costing us.
Yeah, let's see if VT gets treated like an actual ACC team come tournament time. Meaning a 6 seed - like Syracuse, NC State, UNC, Duke would get in any other year with our same record. Let's see.
Issue this year is that ACC did so badly in OOC noncon that it's likely only a handful of ACC teams get in. It is insane, though, that espn bracketology currently has 13-10 UNC (6-5 ACC) as last four in while Wake forest (16-6, 8-3) and SMU (17-5, 8-3) are last four out and Stanford (15-7, 7-4) not even on the bubble.
UNC is 45 in NET while SMU is 41, Wake is 69, Stanford is 72... and VT is 159.
But, but, but it is UNC!
I enjoyed my free biscuit this morning thanks to SMU and them actually fouling with 13 seconds to go. Biscuits looked like a sure thing at 3:30 seconds left in the game and then we went on a 3:17 second scoring drought.
Now, we're receiving votes in the Coaches Poll.
All but 1 team ahead of us in the ACC is ranked.
Don't pain yourself to look where our former roster is. They put up 95 yesterday on the #13 team, 77 of the 95 came from former or committed players. Amoore had 43. Was waiting for another game to kick in and they hit me with the dagger highlights.
I watched some of the UK/TAMU game a week or so ago - a 61-55 loss to an unranked team. Still looks like they are vulnerable playing against an active/physical team, but crap there's a lot of talent running around in blue.
I root for Kenny Brooks to lose each and every game he coaches.
I root against Kenny and for some of our former players. Dang it, I liked Amoore and Strack. However, Kenny is up to his old tricks, his bench gets very little time and I really wonder if Silva or Blue would have been better sticking with their commitment to Tech. Both would have more playing time than they currently do.
I wholeheartedly agree with that assessment, but I guess they would rather wait their turn to play for him than get early time with a different coach. I think Blue would thrive at VT; Silva I'm less sure about because of the pace,
Is it about playing time or $? I'm sure we offered pennies to the dollar for what UK threw at their women's program as part of hiring Brooks away from VT if we were even able to make an offer. As I recall, they backed out of their commitments pretty quickly after he left.
Kids listen to coaches praising them about how great they are and they all say the player is great. So since they are great, it is all about $$ because they all expect to be playing because they are great.
Few more $$ with no playing time doesn't advance player's skills.
Sometimes, it's just the coach. Yeah, all that other stuff, but sometimes, it's just the coach.
