Let's Go!!!

Life is good.

The were gonna let out back center score double digits after scoring 6 all year fam.

FAM! much better offensive night and some good defense when they werent stroking logo 3s... hope poteat is ok but looked bad

JAMAS. SIN. DUDA.

Jaydon Young has career night. Usually it is the opposing team's bench player who has the career night. For once, roles are reversed. Congrats Jaydon on great night.

Go Hokies!!

Young, Johnson, and Burnham won this game. Those guys came to play!

Wessler looked the best I have seen him too... 10 points, 5 rebounds, and some good defense in 17 minutes

I watched most of their first 5 or 6 games this season, and couldn't (and still can't) for the life of me figure out why he doesn't play a lot more. He's efficient and plays with energy, and his size affects opposing shot selection in the paint.

In the "old days," I'd be excited he'll likely be starting for us next year, but with the portal it's a coin flip whether he'll be here at all.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me.

In the 5 games I have watched he looks like a baby deer out there figuring out how to move his limbs. He has looked more like a liability than an asset

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

I sort of agree on this take but yesterday was a different story. Don't know if it was motivation to show up Kidd or what but he only had one or two times on defense that he was slow. Offense he seemed fluid and got the ball to the rim.

It's not like we've got any other bigs that look like Hakeem Olajuwan out there.

If you projected Wessler's minutes (9.5 mpg) out to Poteat's playing time (21.8 mpg) he matches up pretty evenly.

Points: Poteat 9.6, Wessler 8.3
Rebounds: Poteat 4.0, Wessler 6.4
Blocks: Poteat 0.3, Wessler 0.7
Turnovers: Poteat 1.4, Wessler 0.9

And they shoot a similar percentage:
FG %: Poteat 53.8, Wessler 58.7
FT %: Poteat 73.3, Wessler 69.0

I realize Wessler is probably playing a slightly lower level of competition, on average, when he's on the court. But it's also probably challenging to get into any sort of groove at 9.5 minutes a game.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me.

They will need 20 from him next year even if Jones and Burdak are both able to play significant minutes unless they portal over him again. Poteat and Burnham will be gone. Lawal will probably get alot of big number offers so may also be gone.

I've been thinking about the prospects of keeping Lawal next season. I realize I'm wearing my Maroon and Orange glasses here, but I think Young can make a fairly persuasive argument to keep him here.

I have no idea about actual salary numbers, but let's say VT offers Lawal $400K next year and someone else offers $600K. I'm not sure it's a slam dunk (no pun intended) to take the bigger offer. I mean, Lawal has borderline NBA potential, but he has a LOT to work on. He's not going to get on the court somewhere like Alabama or Houston, and Mike Young has a solid track record of developing players' games (Aluma, Mutts, Kidd). It might be wise for Lawal to stay put in Blacksburg for one more year.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me.

If Lynn kid got more than that to go to Miami I feel like Lawal will get closer to 1 mill to some SEC team

Hopefully- I really hope- Kidd was an outlier. You see his coach quit over that bullshit- a lifer gym guy like Larranaga was tired of it. There was monopoly money BS at Miami this year.

I got a good chuckle from this. Calling a spade a spade. I like it! 👍

Burnham sucks. If he was one of the better players in that league last year, that league sucks. He can't defend, he plays with little energy and he's not Klay Thompson shooting the ball. You need guys better than him to compete in the ACC. We won't miss him even if he is replaced by a simply warm portal body. Basile was much better.

Basile was the same in Defensive Box Plus/Minus as Burnham. He scored at a high rate so had an extremely high Offensive Box Plus/Minus.

Burnham isn't consistent on the offensive end but is shooting the 3 at 45% and is the second best guy on offense behind Lawal per advanced stats in Offensive Box Plus/Minus. Defensively by advanced stats of Defensive Box Plus/Minus he is the second best defender on the team behind Schutt.

I don't disagree with your position on him being subpar for the ACC but that's basically the whole team.

I could find an advanced stat on ball boys having positive impact. But I get it. I also watch the games with my eyes. Advanced stats are game, possession, situation agnostic. You can find one that says Ben Simmons is tough and Anthony Davis stays healthy. But in watching the games, Burnham doesn't get key rebounds, he doesn't defend athletic wings, doesn't knock down BIG shots.

This is just objectively false. Burnham comes off the bench and gets key shots and rebounds and effort. NC State with a game winning steal? Key rebounds in other close games? There is a reason he gets love from announcers as the gritty player even though he has a lower ceiling. He plays like a basketball sam rogers.

Well said. He may not be a top-tier P4 talent, but he certainly doesn't "suck." He's versatile, definitely plays with a lot of effort, and is very efficient from 3-pt range as ltrepeter said above.

Look, I'm all for legitimate criticism of players, they're big boys and most of them are getting paid now. But takes an impressive amount of misguided logic to rag on the players that ARE on the team because they aren't as good as the players you'd LIKE to have on the team. What the fuck is Ben Burnham supposed to do about VT not being as good as we'd all like? Should he just magically "be better?" I don't know any of the players on the team, but I can guarantee that every coach and player on that team are all working their asses off every day to try to win as many games as they can.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me.

Relax. Please. "What the fuck is Ben Burnham supposed to do about VT not being as good as we'd all like"? I never blamed the teams struggles on Burnham alone. I opined that he's not good. I said what I said.

Actually, you opined that he 'sucks'. Your words.

My wife takes the kids and leaves the house while I watch my Hokie games.........nuff said

I said what I said

So I watched the Louisville game and Wessler looked serviceable. Still doesn't have much grace or finesse in the post, but much better on defense and the boards. I don't know that he can generate any offense more than 6 ft from the basket... yet.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

Pretty sure I have seen him shooting 3s in the pre-game warmups. Success rate couldn't tell you.

Go Hokies!!

And for a change, the announcers were, well, pretty good. Few digressions into their glory days, or peripheral nonsequiters and had done their homework on both teams for a change. We should have destroyed BC, bad loss, but I give the team props on their road play and while Kidd got his points, he wasn't a factor for Miami.

EDIT: What's the deal with Lawal? 7 in first half, 2 in second. Did they up the D on him, or what?

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

Not really, he just sort of faded away. He scored the first 7 points and then rarely asked for the ball inside so he wasn't getting touches that are ideal for scoring. His bucket in the second half was a give and go alleyoop from Rechsteiner, which I don't know why they don't scheme more.

Good news on Poteat after the game, Coach Young said it shouldn't be long term issue.

Yea, that would be really cheap....

We are having a disappointing season, because our whole fucking team left for higher salaries. But give this team credit. Miami is horrid, awful- you should beat them even if the game was on the moon. Beat shit teams... because they are shit. Good to do that regardless the season/situation. We have lost way too many of these games over the years. BC last week included. I'm not asking to beat Duke with this roster. I'm asking to sweep dogshit Miami whose coach quit mid-season. I AM asking for that. Good job boys.

On paper this was a team we should have beaten. The fact that were we coming off a flu game (presumably) where we played our worst basketball game of the year (arguably the worst game since ~2020 against UVA) and 1) we beat a team on the road, and 2) beat them worse than when we beat them at home - this has me happy that they are just getting up for games.

It's weird how all of our sports teams get a flu when they play games at BC?

Not the football team... we just happen to show up for their Red Bandana game every time we visit.

There is no doubt that CMY has the team determined to play as hard as they can every game. Some games we just look like the half the team is sick (BC) and then we have the games were we exceed expectations and beat a better opponent.
