The 16-2, 7-8 Ladies host 22-6, 10-5 California, a team that receives votes in the ranking polls. The game will be broadcast on the ACC Network. ESPN thinks we have a 57% chance of winning this game. The Hokies have lost their last two games to #12 UNC and to a Stanford team that we gave the game away. Cal is on a three-game winning streak. Their six losses are to 5 ranked teams and Clemson.
Cal starts three grad students a senior and a sophomore. Four of the five have started every game. Two of the starters are 6'3": #0 Grad Center Onyiah and #7 senior forward Suarez. They are joined by two 5'10" guards, #21 grad student Krimilli and #10 sophomore Twidale. The fifth starter is #4 grad student guard 5/7" Williams.
All of the starters score more than ten points per game and shoot 40-60% from the field. Krimilli, Twidale and Williams shoot 38-40% from three; Suarez shoots 32% from three and Onyiah has not attempted a three. It will be interesting to see how Coach Duffy tries to defend the Golden Bears. Onyiah and Suarez average 3.3 and 3.0 fouls per game; maybe foul trouble can be our friend today.
The starters account for 63 of their 73 ppg. Foul trouble for any starter takes a lot of scoring potential out of the game. I think we need to get the ball to Rose and hope she can get fouled; we might also have success driving to the basket to generate fouls. Cal shoots 45% overall and 34.5% from beyond the arc. They average 18.3 turnovers to 15.1 assists.
To have any chance in this game, we have to limit turnovers and make layups.
