WBB host Syracuse Feb 6 at 6 PM

The 15-7, 6-5 Ladies host the 8-13, 2-8 Syracuse Orange today at 6 PM. The game will be on the ACC Network. Their two wins in ACC play were against 11-11, 4-7 Clemson and 13-9, 3-8 Miami. They lost to ranked Notre Dame, FSU, Ga Tech and NC State; also lost to unranked SMU, Louisville, Boston College and UVA. We also lost to Notre Dame, FSU, Virginia and NC State; we beat SMU Louisville, and Ga Tech. The ESPN matchup predictor gives us 83.2% chance to win.

Against UVA the Orange started a soph, 2 seniors and 2 grad students: #4 6'2" soph guard Sophie Burrows, #24, 5'8" grad guard Dominique Camp, #22, 6'3" senior forward Kyra Wood, #34 6'4" grad center Izabel Varejao and #5 6'0" senior guard Georgia Woolley. In their previous game against Clemson #17 6'0" senior guard Madeline Potts stated in place of Wooley; but Woolley played 35 minutes.

Woolley is the leading scorer at 14.8, followed by Potts at 11.8 and Burrows at 10.6. Woods and Varajao lead the team in rebounds at 7.5 and 5.5 rebounds per game. Overall the team shoots 41.6% but only 31.2% from three. They make about 5 threes per game. They have about 16.1 assists and 16.7 turnovers per game. Burrows is the primary threat from three shooting 36.6% and making less than 2 per game; the Orange make about 5 threes per game.

On the season they are scoring 70.9 ppg and giving up 71.7. The Hokies are going to have problems in the paint with the height of Wood and Varajao; but neither is much of a threat to step outside. Syracuse is not a big threat from outside; so if we can keep the ball out of the paint when on defense, we should do well. As usual it will be important to take care of the ball; we need to get good shots on offense and avoid the turnover fast break lapses.

LETS GO!!!

Me in my head: "God we need something good from our Hokies this week. Please pull out a win ladies..."

Hokies!

No Rose Micheaux. Injured in practice.

I seldom speak to loluva grads, but when I do, I tell them I want large fries.

not good for our season

Did they give anymore detail than that? Certainly hurts us tonight and dampens the hopes for the rest of the season and the outside chance to make the NCAA tournament.

They said something about an injury in practice and she was day-to-day. Didn't say what kind of injury.

we are in trouble without rose

If not for cuse shooting lights out... 62.5% FG and 60% from three, this wouldn't be a bad game. Hopefully they will revert to the mean in the 2nd half. Burrows, for them, is 5-7 from three. Need to deny her the ball going forward.

well shes 7-9 now... unclear how we keep leaving her open, but it seems like needing to help inside is affecting ability to close out

Her 7 three's just tied a Cassell record for WBB opponent made three's
8 three's is the current VT opponent WBB record.
Need to get a hand in her face.

Ugh. How the f*** is that not an over the back against Ekh there?

My wife takes the kids and leaves the house while I watch my Hokie games.........nuff said

So much for Syracuse not being a threat from outside..

Well any D1 player can hit threes when left wide open over and over. Using Micheaux being out is a weak excuse. Making a two is less damaging than making a 3.

Syracuse just made another three in the locker room

So I am not sure, what that a Quad III or Quad IV loss? Can't beat anybody when they shoot 60%

You can tell Carys and Carleigh really care... Not the defense we needed tonight but really encouraging fight from a very young roster tonight

Carys is quietly our best player this year.

Unfortunately Carleigh is good for at least 3-4 horrible passes a game. She also apparently has trouble with simple layups.

Not just Caleigh. The whole team gets really careless with the ball at the worst possible times.

Doesn't matter if it's cake or pie as long as it's chocolate.

Without any real marquee wins to hang their hat on, the home losses to UVA and now Syracuse combined with the home blowout loss to FSU have likely sealed their NCAA tournament fate. I just hate that another injury has hit this team that already had a short and inexperienced bench. The injury to Suffren has impacted our perimeter defense and ability to penetrate defenses and losing Micheaux obviously limits our size and ability to defend in the paint. Really tough for the girls who stuck with VT and for CMD who is really doing a great coaching job IMO.

Losing Rose while also facing probably the tallest team in the ACC didn't help.

I think the Ladies got unlucky in this one. Coach Duffy decided to control the paint and let Syracuse shoot from outside assuming they would shoot their typical 30%. Bellows decided to have a career night and without Rose, we were not that good at controlling the paint. We could play them three more times and win every game if Syracuse played the way they have all season.

I can see that. The stats say that any regression toward the mean in the 2nd half and we probably win the game. However, that didn't happen. Like the Lt said, I would have liked to have seen the strategy change coming out of halftime. They were already going to have their way inside so just concede that and force them off of the 3-point line. Even if the stats said they shouldn't shoot that well, the fact is that they were shooting it that well. So, take that away from them and give yourself a chance at trading some 2's by Syracuse for 2's and 3's by us.

The problem is they changed offensive strategy and not defense. They started driving the basket more and not working perimeter and clock. As a result we caught up a good bit.
