UNC comes to Cassell 21-6, fresh off a loss to #11 Duke. They had early season losses to #3 UCLA, #2 Texas, and #22 Louisville. The other two losses were to Stanford and Notre Dame.

Tarheels have alot of size. More than the Hokies can consistently counter. The Hokies need to speed up the game. Getting baskets in transition before Carolina is set will go a long way towards victory.

A core feature of Banghart's system is skilled post play paired with perimeter spacing. UNC frequently runs High-Low Action looking for elbow touches for a mobile forward, duck-ins by guards on the weak side and quick post seals in early offense to allow easy layups. She expects deep paint catches, touches inside before outside shots, shot creation that puts foul pressure on opposing bigs and even when the shot is a three, it should originate from a paint touch.

She runs a four out, one in formation. Movement is a defining part with Weak-side 45 cuts, baseline drift on penetration, screening the screener actions and flare screens for shooters.

In ACC play they are shooting 49.7% inside and 34% from 3. They hit 73% of their free throws. Rebounding is a significant advantage. Fouls and turnovers are pretty even.

Defensively Banghart primarily uses a compact half-court woman-to-woman defense with strong help principles. Perimeter defenders sit in driving lanes and shrink space. Early help on paint touches, then crisp X-outs to shooters.
They avoid reaching and emphasize verticality at the rim. Banghart's values keeping the ball out of the middle, forcing contested mid-range shots, and finishing possessions with rebounds.

Already a clock issue that required a media timeout. Get the shit fixed. Its embarrassing having this happen in half our home games.

game has started and we have a clock issue in the first 14 seconds. what's up with the clock in cassell this year? it's the men's and women's games.
oh yeah...

LET'S GO...

I seldom speak to loluva grads, but when I do, I tell them I want large fries.

I haven't started yet, but I'm going to... DRINKING!!!

WHISTLE WHISTLE EVERYWHERE.

Breathing fouls but Freelon gets sandwiched ...crickets.

Allowing Harris to use her chicken wing to gain advantage in the paint. Three times so far.

We've done a good job this quarter with Wenzel and Wells on the bench with foul trouble. We're actually burning some time off the clock and only giving them one shot.

Freelon cant buy a foul in this one. Girl gave her a two arm shove to send her to other side of paint, freeing the heel up for clean rebound

Not set. Not in direct shot path.

under review for an "unobserved foul".
So now you can call a foul for a foul you don't see?

GTFO. Hit Nelson with a Flagrant that wasnt even called a common foul live.

Completely ridiculous. That better not decide the winner of this game in the end.

The thing that pissed me off was it was a soccer "foul" where they called it more for the embellishments the TarHeel put on it.

As soon as she was touched, she threw her head back with more than anything the contact caused and then crumples herself to the floor away from her bodies Momentum.

Showed she was in control of herself and acted deliberately

Harris for unc has had more chicken wings than Chick Fil-a

I seldom speak to loluva grads, but when I do, I tell them I want large fries.

Rough 3rd quarter the parts I saw. UNC definitely getting more aggressive like they want this more than we do. Outscored 21-16 in the 3rd. UNC shot almost 60% in the period.

Wenzel made a layup, Wenzel made a layup, Wenzel made a layup!!!

Then missed one...you got her over her skis. 3/9 on the night, 1/4 on layups

Terrible turnover by Wenzel

Huge missed call. That should have been back court and our possession with at least 2 seconds left in regulation.

Wenzel 3/13 now

She elbowed her then slapped her in the face. Awful

She's been throwing elbows all night

Fuck.

I knew this would happen after UNC shot 0 free throws against Duke. The conference was not going to let them lose back-to-back games. So ridiculous.

Wenzel had TWELVE empty possessions in 2nd half between shot and turnovers

Anyone seen Ballers on HBO? Reading comments for the last couple of games (both men's and women's) that I did not watch makes it seem like we are getting the same treatment from ACC officials that Strasmore did from the NFL. Did VT do something to royally piss the head office off? Or do they simply just hate us because we are new blood and don't belong? lol

13 turnovers and 0 for last 8 FG.

Yep, I was not a fan of officiating but it was quasi balanced. This loss was on failing to execute.

We also stopped forcing them to turnover. Think it was 12/5 1st/2nd half.

Wentzel has to be more efficient if she's going to be so high volume. Unfortunately VT won't hit their ceiling until that happens.

Sorry but Wentzel is what she is at this point. Her three year numbers lay it out.
She has actually gotten worse each season here. This season she is more likely to hit a 3 than a layup. I have no idea what she does in practices but it either gets thrown out the windows in games or she isnt practicing game style layups.

Freshmen year: 38.6% overall, 30.6% 3p, 44.6% inside, 76% FT
(Overall shooting % on only 3.1 attempts per game)

Sophomore year: 34.7% overall, 33.6% 3p, 35.4% inside, 77.8% FT
(Shooting 12.1 a/pg)

This season: 33% overall, 34.6% 3p, 31.8% inside, 75.7% FT
(Shooting 13.3 a/pg)

She essentially wastes 12 possessions per game between misses and turnovers. 4.4/13.3 and 3 turnovers. Her shooting % also do not count when she misses a layup while being fouled.

Then Duffy needs to look at others to take those shots. Can't keep giving Wentzel the green light.

I agree but unfortunately I think because of how Wenzel is viewed as the leader the blowback of reigning her in has the staff on edge. It wasnt coincidence that when Wenzel sat the entire 2nd quarter the Hokies had their largest lead of the game. Wenzel is 9th on the team in offensive efficiency rating.

With Suffren and Nelson on the floor together we are so much better defensively because they are opportunistic and the pressure leads to offense. UNC had 8 turnovers in the 2nd quarter. Nelson and Suffren both make their layups and/or peel off/pass out rather than put up bad shots. Nelson is shooting 44.6% inside. Suffren is shooting 46.9% inside. Both shoot the 3 worse than Wenzel though.

Want another ugly Wenzel number? Her and Swanson are the only two on the team shooting less than 40% on interior shooting. The Hokies as a team shoot interior shots on 47.6 of 65 shots per game. Wenzel is 14% below the team average of 45.6% on interior shots.

She just doesn't seem to know what to do when she drives. Most of the time it looks like she just throws it up hoping for a foul or frantically tries to kick it out resulting in a steal. That's if she doesn't throw it out of bounds first. Very frustrating.

Yeah the throwing it up is what gets me the most, for such a big guard she should be able to body into the rim. Instead on many attempts she actually ends up going farther from the basket the closer she gets to the baseline which means she is shooting the layup across her body rather than laying it up.

Wentzel has to be more efficient

This is true.

I don't think there will be any blowback from those of us on TKP. Besides, the staff is paid to make those painful decisions.

She essentially wastes 12 possessions per game between misses and turnovers.

Ouch! 12 possessions? We get it... she's a guard. One to two bad passes, a walk, it happens. And nobody shoots 100%. But 12 wasted possessions! Get that to a more reasonable 6-8 and that will help alot.

I think it would be more impact on the locker room than the fanbase.

Completely agree, if it was 6-8 it wouldn't hurt the team like it does now. I also think this is where the Kate Sears injury hurt us the most. If Sears was playing, Wenzel wouldn't be averaging 30.4 mpg.

Do you think the locker room doesn't have the same data we're looking at? I'd be surprise if her teammates weren't thinking along those same lines, if not saying it. I don't think there would be as much of a blowout as you think, because they have to be somewhat self-aware.

Those were some of the most crooked and incompetent referees I have ever seen. They literally cost us the game. We have started keeping track of how many times Baker is slapped or hit in the face per game with no call. The average is over 3! But they called a flagrant after the fact for UNC.

They also cost the Hokies 2 free throws. When it went to overtime, they reset the fouls to zero. Mistake. Called a foul on UNC, we should have gone to the line. They just put it to 1. Then they called a second foul and realized it shouldn't have been reset. That time we got the two free throws. But they still owed us two free throws from the first foul.

I knew going in after officiating cost UNC the game at Duke we weren't going to be allowed to win. The girls did their best regardless. In a game with fair officiating where blocks are blocks, and charges are charges, we won that game in regulation. What will it take to get actually fair officiating? When the blonde ref shows up, I know we are in for a hard game.

We need an explanation from our assistant coaches on this! They should keep track of this and advise CMD.

She got hit more than six times?!? ;^)
