Tony Robie was hosted last night at the VT Innovation Center in Alexandria and I had a chance to attend. 45 minutes of food & drinks and then about an hour of Q&A from the facilitator and questions for the audience. A few of my takeaways:
- Robie doing really well, and feels 100% recovered from the kidney donation to Latona's father (who is also doing really well)
- Very excited about how the match-ups are shaping up for the ACC Championships, and really hopeful about placing more guys this year for nationals
- Extremely high on the '26 and '27 classes, and really optimistic (and humble) about a realistic chance of the elusive team national championship
- He talked quite a bit about Bassett's recruitment, how Iowa screwed it up (didn't provide context), and how VT was able to take advantage because of the work they had collectively put in throughout the recruitment process.
- Discussed the recent changes to the scholarship cap and NIL, and how that's opened things up quite a lot for the team to stock more talent, enabling them to be even more competitive, and leveling the field a bit with NC State which had a bit of an unfair advantage because of the state laws and how they were able to stack tuition and financial aid benefits without necessarily handing out scholarships.
- On the topic of NIL, he feels that VT is well positioned to compete and it competing in this space. Just like football, recruitment is a year-round process and the team is regularly re-recruiting the players to keep them at Tech.
- He was asked about the changes to the AD budget and impacts to the program. Right now there haven't been any impacts to wrestling specifically but also noted that the news is still relatively new, so financial changes may be on the way. He was also asked about changes to game admission and whether or not the program is considering charging for admission to Cassell to which he said there was nothing planned, but also noted that could be an additional influx of money given the trajectory of the program.
- When asked about the potential for hosting future matches in NOVA against some regional opponents he said its something that's been looked at in the past but hard to execute. GMU and UMD are really the only two programs that could participate, and MD has never seemed interested.
- Finally, I asked about the expansion of participation in the ACC schools, and he didn't seem optimistic. He highlighted the current state of athletics in the P4 conferences and the focus on the revenue sports, and starting any kind of Olympic program is extremely rare.
