Comments
How are we projecting going in to the tournament? Race between us and the puppies?
I think Stanford is the favorite if you just go straight off of seeds. It's probably going to be a three way race to the finish.
Question is, who can get those bonus points
Yeah that's the difference maker. Stanford missing out on an extra first round match hurts them but they have a bunch of 2 seeds so they'll also get some of the easiest matches for bonus. Tech will be leaning on a couple of their high scorers to lead the way.
At this point, I think it is a 3 way race. Stanford is right there with NC State. It will likely come down to bonus points and with Gaj getting 2 shots at bonus points, Seidel will likely bonus everyone and maybe Sasso and EV getting a MD or two early, we have a strong shot at winning. We need Desiante to stay aggressive, get take downs and advance. To me, the most important thing, we get all 10 wrestlers to take the ACC automatic qualifiers for the NCAA tournament. LFG!
What do the * and ^ mean?
Guessing * are reigning ACC Champion
I had the same question!
* - a prior ACC champion at that weight class
^ - a prior ACC champion at another weight class
Desiante is the only one that absolutely must win his way in with an ACCQ spot so has to finish 3rd or better.
Curious how many medical forfeit or straight up withdrawals we might see.
Questions for Hokies:
Are Gaj and Desiante healthy?
Can Crook bow up? Same with Sasso.
Looks like Stanford/Hokies tie for highest avg seed here but that's only because Stanford has two #7s. Their other 8 classes total 13, so less than 2 average.
Ventresca takes on the winner of Terukina and Chappell, who he defeated 7-2 and 19-2 Tech Fall earlier this year. Any win will be a qualification for NCAAs. He is also undefeated this year against Provo (6-2), Robinson (4-1 and 2-2 SV).
Seidel takes on the winner of Tallmadge and Oakley, neither of whom he has wrestled this year, at least in ACC play. A win and he will qualify for the NCAAs. He didn't give up a point vs ANY of wrestlers he would face in the finals (3 Techs and a MD).
Crook opens with Priest whom he hasn't wrestled. A win and he'll take on Consiglio whom he lost to 5-6. Either a win vs Consiglio or one win in the Consolation Bracket will qualify him for the NCAAs
Gaj opens with Ross. They did not meet during the duals. Two wins qualifies him for the NCAAs. He would also face either Valencia (whom he beat 2-1), or Askew (didn't wrestle)
Miller opens with Boulanger, whom he majored 11-2. Two wins qualifies him for the NCAAs. He has also already defeated both of his potential Round 2 opponents.
Church opens with Murphy (5-1 Dec), Two wins qualifies him for the NCAAs. He defeated Dunbar, but hasn't wrestled Parco.
Desiante opens with Hamilton (15-4 MD). A win sets him against Augustine (1-2 TB1). A loss there and he would need to win in Match 74 and 87. A win against Augustine and he qualifies.
Bullock opens with Gammell, whom he hasn't wrestled. Two wins qualifies him for the NCAAs. He lost to Wojcikiewicz (5-6) and TFed Hussey (19-4)
Sasso opens with Burrell, Jr (9-1 MD). A win would put him up against either McGrory (18-3 TF) or Stout (4-11). He can only afford 1 loss to make it to the NCAAs.
Mullen opens with Levy (19-3 TF). A win would put him up against either Duthie (7-1 Fall) or Pitzer (0-1). Should he fall to the Consolation Bracket, he would have to win his first Consolation match to make the NCAAs.
Thanks for the expert analysis! This'll be a nice reference guide as we watch the tournament.
Even if somehow Mullen and Sasso didn't get the acc automatic spots. They would still be ranked high enough to get At Large bid to the ncaa tournament
I would rather, we not leave it up to chance
Crook gets pinned. I can't wait until Bo is officially on campus
Gaj 5-0 to advance
13-3 MD for Miller
Church 5-1 to advance
Desiante 9-1 MD to advance
Bullock advances 2-1
Nc state loses a team point and Cates is disqualified from the rest of the tournament
What happened (I'm only able to follow of FloWrestling)?
He punched Unc 184 in the face with like 10 seconds left in the match
That'll do it
Sasso advances with a Fall
Mullen advances with a Fall
Big team points swing in the last three weighs

Cates probably cost NC State any chance at contention.
How did the DQ happen in Cates' match?finally read other thread above about punch to faceIt was enjoyable to watch our Hokies defeat a few Hoos round 1 to move on.
Damn Levy giving up the late pin to a Stanford guy is not good for us.
First Round of Consolations has completed.

Eddie V and Seidel up in Mat 1
Gaj and Miller will be up in Mat 2
Wish there was a split screen option for wrestling like some of the other sports
Ventresca is in, Seidel on deck, Gaj in the Abyss, Miller in the Secret Abyss
What a load of bullshit
What happened?
Ventresca advances and has Qualified for the NCAAs
Eddie and Seidel Championship matches could decide the overall. Going to be Tech v Stanford in both
Seidel with a 17-2 TF to qualify for the NCAAs and a shot at the ACC title
What a shitty way for 141 Semi to end
Ugh Stanford 3 for 3 into finals
Gaj needs to eliminate Stanford here
Would like to also see Church and Bullock eliminate Stanford
Gaj definitely hit him in the front. But what a finish for Gaj
Gaj with the 5-4 win to advance and Qualify for the NCAAs
Gutsy win by Gaj. Dude has high IQ
Gaj engaging the crowd while on top *chefs kiss*
Ethen Miller 4-3 win
Going to have a third Stanford - VT final most likely
Miller through to the NCAAs with a 4-3 win.
Lower 5 classes are in the books. Your Finals tonight will be
125: Virginia Tech vs Stanford

In 30 seconds Cardenas has grabbed head gear 3 times but no Technical Violation on him.
Gaj with the lone upset of the semi's
HUGE WIN BY CHURCH
SV takedown
Yep kept Stanford out. Unreal how close this Championship is going to be with them
DESIANTE WITH THE UPSET OF AUGUSTINE
Desiante had to win his way in and did.

Bonus Pitt blocked on other semi by UNC
BULLOCK WITH THE MD

Hokie Consolation Matchups:

285: Mullen vs Barket (Duke). They have not wrestled this season. He must win to be an AQ for the NCAAs
Crook in the hole, Mat 1.
Win and In time for Crook
Jack majors Crook. Crook must win 5th to AQ.
How has crook fallen off so much this year?
UVA has 2 qualifiers so far who both took 5th through NCs or DQ/Forfeits
How? ACC only has two weights with 5 AQ and that's 125 and 141. Crook is in the 5th place bout at 141.
The ACC receives:
5 x 125
3 x 133
5 x 141
4 x 149
4 x 157
4 x 165
3 x 174
4 x 184
3 x 197
4 x 285
I am wrong.
Their 5th ranked guy at Heavyweight just qualified with a pin and will wrestle Mullen
Mullen is going in. Must win
JIMMY WITH THE MAJOR TO QUALIFY
Wow the 3rd place finish at 133. Sucks for whoever loses on this review.

Needed it. Stanford really closed the gap in Consolation
5th Place Matches are all that are left between now and the Finals.
Crook lost the initial match with Priest due to a stall penalty with 30 seconds remaining in the match.
Come on Crook. 4-0 after 2
Crook wins 4-1
Qualifies for NCAAT
10 wrestlers to the ncaas!
All 10 going to NCAA. Let's go!
The 95.5 team points is currently the best Tech has ever done at the ACC Championships.
We only have 88.5
We win if EV and AS just keep doing what they have done all year!
Hokies are at 88.5 team points. Stanford is at 78. Stanford can score a maximum of 25 more points. Tech can score a maximum of 40 points. The three H2H championship matches are going to be very important.
I don't know where I got 95.5 for the Hokies.
Any win will be a record score for them.
15 minutes until the Finals. Grab a fresh cold one, turn on ACCNetwork, and get ready for the main events.
Overall Standings Going Into The Finals:

I don't watch a lot, but what was Church's strategy there? Seemed like he was playing a lot of defense and hoping the ref would get him back on his feet.
Church looking rather static

Did 5th Place matches not count for Team Points? Our team score did not change after Mullen won 3rd. Crook winning 5th did not add to score.
Singleton isnt trying to wrestle, just hanging on Desiante
How many still Red does he get? Gave him 5 with no stall
No stall for the turtle?
NC Stall strikes again
Singleton doesnt get a 2nd stall at the end there is bullshit
About as bad a start to the evening as possible
Bullock for our last chance to extend the lead against non-Stanford opponents.
No score through 1
Quick escape by Bullock to start 2. 1-0
1-0 Bullock after 2
Escape 1-1

Hokies open up a 91.5-81 lead.
Sasso up against Posada.
5 matches remain.
3 are VT vs Stanford

Any VT win all but clinches it
A VT win over Stanford should clinch it if my math is right.
Takedown Sasso
Escape Posada

THIRD TAKEDOWN BY SASSO 11-2
RT SECURED
MAJOR DECISION FOR THE ACC CHAMPIONSHIP
I thought so too but announcer at end said inching closer. Only thought is bonus points?
Yes. Technically. Stanford can score 15 more points. We are up 14. But they would need to get 3 straight pins at 125 133 and 141.
Hokies 91.5
Stanford 81
Believe one more win will seal it for us. Might take 2.
Lets Go Sasso
Sasso looking good for a 6-8 at the Ncaa tournament
Sasso beat #1 and #2 by a combined 16-3
Now for the 1 non-VT or Stanford final
Sasso was impressive to understate it
Sasso pounced on that guy and rattled him.
Hokies up by 14.5 points, a new team best of 95.5 points.
All the Hokies hitting concessions to get food before Eddie V comes up
Now for Eddie V

9-0 Seidel with another takedown
Escape 9-1, but immediately another takedown , then another takedown
15-1
TECH FALL BY SEIDEL
Stanford with a lot of Freshman going deep into the tourney. They look like a bigger problem than the Stall pack next year.
Yep. They have 3 all Americans or international wrestling guys that didn't wrestle this year I think.
Seidel may be a freshman, be he's a grown-ass man
Jesus christ. Seidel is a dawg
Shades of Devin Carter dare I say.
No offense to DC. Seidel might be better when it's all said and done 🤣
Oh yeah. Honestly DC was even more cut and takedown than Seidel. Seidel tries to get back points. DC was almost strictly takedown and then immediate cut until the match was over.
Seidel is a menace
He just Tech-Falled an All-American as a Freshman
Not only that. In their two matches. Seidel is outscoring Knox 31 to 3
Hokies now have 103 team points ...on a down year
And of the 4 conference champions (so far)
EV will be back
Seidel will be back
Sasso will be back
Bullock has a extra year if he wants it
Jesus.
If Gaj wins here, we could have 6 returning champions
7 returning champions, counting Henson
And we're adding Bassett at 141 and have Ferrell at the 285
Our stable is ridiculous
Also could be a transfer or two during the offseason. In and out
Gaj for the final match
Scoreless through 1
HENSON SIGHTING
Escape, Gaj 1-0

Escape. 1 all
And we're on to SV
End of SV.

Gaj with the Win
LET'S FUCKING GO
106 team points 💥 💥 💥 💥
Kudos to coach Haught for getting the upper weights peaking at the right time. Lots of complaints, some justified, early in the year about development but Tech has gotten the most out of Jaden Bullock, and Sonny Sasso looks night and day from a month ago. Coach Robie said they were working on getting Sasso moving his feet a bit more and not getting stuck in the hand fight as much. He was very active at ACCs and it paid huge dividends. Really opened up his attacks with better angles and made it much more difficult for opponents to get a clean shot to score. Not sure if Desiante works with Haught but he's wrestling his best in a Hokies singlet right now too.
I'll also note that while nobody is mistaking them for JYD, I think Sergio and Jaden have certainly improved their gas tanks over the season.
I will admit to be shocked Jaden got it done. Early in the year you could watch his gas tank hit empty at the start of the 3rd. He definitely was more complete the last month.
