Is VT not getting televised or something?
Also, it's a better fan experience to put more recognitized brands on TV? Like, why wouldn't you televise the team that will have the most viewers? That will make most people happy.
I'm just not sure what you're insinuating?
I don't believe there is a quid-pro-quo between the SEC and ESPN beyond what is laid out in contract.
Maybe VT was left out of hosting because of facilities/infrastructure. That would suck but that isn't espn doing the SEC a favor
Maybe the committee truly didn't believe that VT was a quality team. Poor judgement? sure, but not conspiratorial.

re: bullet 2 I think the ESPN committee found a reason to keep us out of the top 16, and had that failed they had another out by blaming the lack of hotels available within a 30 mile radius. I firmly believe that the committee was looking for one more SEC team to squeeze in and we were the team that gave them the best argument to snub. We could have shut this discussion down entirely by beating FSU, but we had a solid enough resume to easily make an argument to host.
Bullet 3 - totally plausible. Doubtful, but plausible.
Bullet 1 - I dont know what to tell you. We've been watching exactly this happen for the last 15+ years, and it was only a matter of time before it spilled over into other non-Football/Basketball sports, Yes they have their media deal which is way better than the one the ACC has, but to think that they (SEC and ESPN) aren't in bed together trying to form a new elitist league...

on the eSECpn point.... they are invested much more heavily, and recently in the SEC than the ACC. Let's not forget how corporate culture works that the current management team's things need to succeed and the prior manager's things failing can actually be good for the new manager. There are multiple layers of incentive within ESPN to have the SEC be propped up at the expense of their other coverages. Plus the value of the ACC investment is so much lower than the SEC that there is less pressure to get an ROI, whereas their investment in the SEC has been so large that they need tons of revenue to justify that expense (and not have people look bad).
They control every aspect of perception around the leagues and can even influence recruiting and investment based off of their coverages of the schools and conferences.

You mean the completely above board and not at all ill-thought out partnership with Raycom sports that Swofford guided wasn't a master class in how to run a conference??
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
It was his son. By the deal his dad got them, his son became the General Manager of Raycom.
When FSU sued the ACC, they alleged this:
It also alleges its partnership with Raycom results in "approximately $82 million of rights fees for ACC Tier II and Tier III games going to third parties each year rather than the ACC and $50 million in rights fees paid by Raycom Sports to ESPN for sublicensing a package of ACC games (which in turn Raycom Sports licensed to Fox Sports Network/Bally for a substantial profit not shared with the members)."

ESPN isn't bending for the SEC. They NEED the SEC in the spotlight to appease the shareholders. ESPN, ABC, Disney, and the Mouse dont care who it is as long as it maximizes profits, and right now (and has been since Saban arrived) SEC elitism is how they manage to keep profitability high.

You can't seriously suggest hosting an ncaa regional tournament and putting visiting players in dorms?
If another school tried to pull that off, and our girls were put in dorms, we would be clowning them on here, talking about how the NCAA should have rules against playing a regional in a place that doesn't have enough hotel rooms.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
You are right. A few years ago, I had a fishing trip planned and it happened to be graduation weekend, for Tech and for Radford. Our lodging fell through and I spent something like 4 hours and made maybe three dozen phone calls looking for a motel room. I searched south for a while, but didn't want to add too much travel time back to the Bay, so I concentrated north. I quit when I got about halfway between Roanoke and Staunton. We canceled the trip and learned yet another lesson about no room at the inn.

Natalie Honnen, selection committee's chair, said the NCAA denied the #Hokies' bid to host. Graduation is next weekend and hotels in the 30-mile radius are limited."They did not [meet the requirements to host]. That did not come into our decision of the top 16 seeds."— Sam Mostow (@bySamMostow) May 11, 2026
The thing that sucks is that having graduation and the regional on campus at the same time would be a great atmosphere for softball.
Also, if we ever get a home playoff game (which sounds ridiculous now, but with the changing format, who knows), stuff like this will come up again.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Just read an article in the Roanoke Times that stated flat out that we weren't considered a top 16 seed for other reasons, but if we'd have qualified, the lack of motel rooms would have ruled us out. They cited the quality of our losses and schedule strength. Definitely time to make some real noise the only way that it counts.

We needed (past tense) to start investing in hospitality infrastructure decades ago, and now we apparently need to catch-up. Lack of hotels in the area has gotten better, but its never been enough to meet the demand when big events happen. I get why it wasn't a priority - its a bad investment when you can only maybe sell out your hotels 8 weekends (maybe) in the Fall, and once (graduation) in the Spring. Softball creating demand in the Spring helps, but we need more. The idea of bringing more concerts into Blacksburg is one of those ideas, but we can't replace the playing field at Lane multiple times a year, and Cassell is a difficult place to host anything beyond the sports it already does.

With a 37-17 record, LSU snagged the final Regional hosting spot thanks to its challenging nonconference and SEC schedule, as well as upsets over Texas A&M, Oklahoma and Arizona during the season. These Tigers can get feisty, especially with workhorse Jayden Heavener in the circle, and they are very much a chaos-by-committee offense led by Tori and Kylee Edwards (unrelated). However, they'll face a tough task against Virginia Tech, which many argue was snubbed from the No. 16 seed. The Hokies feature a complete lineup filled with athletes who can also rack up runs via the rally, but the two stars are Emma Mazzarone (168 Ks) and Bree Carrico (1.63 ERA) in the circle. They'll be coming in hot with a vengeance.
Predicted winners: Alabama and Virginia Tech Super Regional prediction: Alabama over Virginia Tech

I'll admit that I was one chafed by the LSU thing until I read more about it. Believing we're better than them is looking pretty lame at this point. Capable of beating them, of course, but looking at the total picture, I just don't feel like we are the better team. I hope the Hokies prove me wrong, and I know they have the dog in 'em somewhere, but the better teams access that dog consistently.
C'mon HOKIES, LET'S GO!!!

No, it was me. Ate a brownie just before we watched the game, recorded and already ,over. Up at 4 am for a fishing trip, I was done in and by the time the first game was over, I was toast. I'll trade me missing it for a big win any day.
No idea how to play it today.

8 of 9 $EC teams hosting moved on to next weekend... 10 of 12 $EC teams advanced... 3 of the 8 supers are $EC vs $EC... I heard quite a lot during the ESPN broadcasts about how there is so much parity in softball today... right...

So all set...7 out of 8 from Big 10 and SEC.
5 from the SEC (Tennessee, Bama, Arkansas, Texas, and Miss St)
2 from Big10 (Nebraska and UCLA)
Texas Tech the sole team outside but is the team with highest NIL so no real surprise.

Dont care, just win. Winning game 1 makes the rest of the weekend a lot more manageable and the ability to take a lot more risk in game #2.
Bree is fine. She was getting hand cramps during the Duke game. She's ready
Athletic is predicting us to come out or pool and lose to Bama.
Text from the article:
FSU losing 7-3 right now to Stetson in the 5th inning
Lost 8-3. Ole Miss Losing to Boston U in Lubbock.
Didn't last long. Ole Miss up 8-2 now
in other news, Duke smoked Howard, and Texas A&M is up 11-0 in the bottom of the 2nd...
Yeah Florida blew out FAMU 12-0 and Bama run ruled South Carolina Upstate 8-0.
A&M pouring it on. 14-1 in 2nd.
Ladies up 5-0 mid 6th coming up to bat.
Women win 6-0!
UGA losing 2-0 to College of Charleston in the 5th
Wahoos losing 3-0 to Indiana in the 1st
LSU run ruled Akron 8-0
Well, despite my fears of having to listen to the game on the +, espn upped the game and put us on the deuce. Great setup for an afternoon of ball, women on the screen and the men on the computer on x.
1:00 for both, b there or b square.
LSU up 3-0 in 2nd.
Mazzarone only pitched 1 inning before Layton took over
Trail 4-0 in the 5th. Have only managed two hits so far.
Welp still down 4-0 in 6th
Kleiman in the circle now trailing 5-0
Welp run ruled 8-0 in 6th
this is what pisses me off. l$u js NOT the better team. Every championship caliber Hokies team i have ever seen has always played down to their competition. This Hokies team is a top 4 team. Just so frustrating
Ehh that pitcher was dealing. She was hitting every edge and corner and had about 15 mph difference in rise ball and offspeed stuff.
Easily could have lost that 1-0 vs 8-0
okay, so next question; why does everyone have a career personal best game against us??????
basketball, football, anything..
that pitcher has been solid all year but not lights out until today. it's like the sports gods are always against us

Hokies will face winner of South Alabama vs Akron at 6pm
That went bad.
Well that sucked

Game pushed to 6:30. No TV channel listed yet.
Hokies (visitor) up 1-0 after top of the 3rd. on espn+ here in St Augustine
Mazzerone retires the first 8; then gives up a walk and dunk single before striking out their #3 hitter to end the bottom of the third. 1-0 Hokies.
3 up, 3 down in the top of the 4th. Akron pitcher moving the ball around. Hokies making contact but nothing getting smashed.
Mazzerone's control is terrible...two walks and a K to start the 4th; seems tired
E-5, bases loaded
single to right scores 1. bases still loaded
single to left, scores 1...
2-1, bases loaded one out
Carrico in
Welp Carrico does the job and defense blows it.
5-1 now on ground ball to 3rd
Don't understand why she didnt throw home
Now in a review. Kind of bs they aren't forcing Akron to challenge it.
Maybe need to start talking about postseason Pete. His teams don't do that good when the postseason starts
Yeah bats completely silent again. Mizelle and Rohs 8/9 hitters only hits
He is about to be 17 and 15 in the ncaa tournament. 1 and 6 in the 1-0 winner bracket games. And eliminated twice in the 1-1 elimination game by the four seed of the regional
first hitter flies out. E-5 scores 2 or 3...umps deciding...
4-1 runners at 2nd and 3rd
we got a break, imo
Carrico K's the hitter. 4-1 Akron after 4.
They are loose...we are NOT.
And the wheels have fallen off in a regional for Tech once again.
two more...6-1 zips
Bats pretty much disappeared starting with the F$U game in the ACC tournament.
None of our pitchers want to throw strikes it appears.
6 walks to Akron. (4 of runs from walks, 3 unearned runs (2 of walks runs were also unearned))
9 to LSU. 5 runs from Walks and two unearned runs (7 out of 8 runs)
Number of walks and unearned runs can't continue if they want to win tomorrow.
Need the ladies to find a little Texas Tech.
Texas Tech was down 8-0 in bottom of 7th and put up 8
They won 10-9 in the 8th
This aged well
Well I guess 6 is acceptable....
Chatfield 💥 💥
6-3
6-5 now. Mizelle 2 RBI Single. Rohs RBI single
7-6
7-6 Hokies Foster 2 RBI double
💥 💥 HOKIES WIN 💥 💥
Does Layton start tomorrow?
dunno but need to intentionally walk Bergeron every time
for nerds...
she's from Rayne...rice field country (double cropped with crawfish) and the frog capital of the world. i have a framed poster from their frog festival circa 1980.
Rayne is about 10 miles west of the eastern extent of what was the gulf coast tall grass prairie ("where the west begins"), arguably the most impacted ecosystem (99% converted) in the U.S.
Ain't that "progress" grand?
exhale
great job by Layton!
Layton. Thank you.
Somehow our true freshman is the one who pounds the zone and makes people swing the bat
Who do we play next?
Heckuva comeback!
LSU tomorrow 2pm. Win and play them again at 430pm.
We play LSU again and need to beat them twice tomorrow.
The Comeback Win was Coach D'Amour's 400th career win.
HOKIES!
I guess you can all thank me. I turned it off when it was 6-1.
almost did the same...bottom of the 6th, 6-1, bases loaded, no outs...then Layton puts the team on her back.
don't know what she'll do in her career but I'm glad she's a Hokie.
No, it was me. Ate a brownie just before we watched the game, recorded and already ,over. Up at 4 am for a fishing trip, I was done in and by the time the first game was over, I was toast. I'll trade me missing it for a big win any day.
No idea how to play it today.
Might have to rely on TKP for the haps. hokiesports doesn't give a link to listen and our radio here is shit. I'll keep trying the portable radio and moving it around to catch a signal.
'Watching' on espn gamecast. Carrick allows 2 singles but gets out of the 1st.
Double by foster ans single by lynch to lead off the 1st. 1-0 Hokies up 1-0 no outs.
what part of don't pitch to Bergeron wasn't clear
I ended up having to listen to the game on the lsu radio network. Decent announcing, I will say, with minimal clutter. The game? Well, we now know for sure that lsu is better than us this year.
ACC went from 7 teams still in starting the day to only Duke remaining. FSU got knocked out by UCF.
Embarrassing
We were all complaining about seeding and the number of SEC schools with bad records allowed in. The only way to beat that is to win...we didn't do the committee looks like geniuses.
I am sure home field advantage counts for something and should not be overlooked. If they all had to travel and play at away stadiums, my guess is less of them make it through.
8 of 9 $EC teams hosting moved on to next weekend... 10 of 12 $EC teams advanced... 3 of the 8 supers are $EC vs $EC... I heard quite a lot during the ESPN broadcasts about how there is so much parity in softball today... right...
Bree Carrico named a Softball America Freshman All American
Jordan Lynch named a Softball America First Team All American
ACC fails to make WCWS with Arkansas eliminating Duke.
Arizona St up 1-0 on Texas and leading game 2.
The UF/TT game I'm not sure they will finish today. Looking at storms off and on whole rest of the day.
Regardless, 6 of 8 spots are a lock to SEC/B10. Two others are SEC vs B12.
Think likely scenario is 7 out of 8 with only Texas Tech getting in outside of them.
Is there no pitcher rotation rules for softball? Texas Tech is rotating like a football team with a running QB and a gunslinger.
Whatever they are I have never figured them out. ESPN stats are screwy too. Game is in bottom of the 5th yet stats show Texas Tech with only two pitchers 3 2/3rd innings
whatever the case, they run-ruled Florida out of their own stadium 16-7. TT advances.
Well, this means I can still keep on rooting for Tech.
We will see if Texas Tech can buy a natty.
Crazy part is they may be better next year without Canady. Booster reportedly upping the NIL pot to $3M and with Canady's $1.2M off the books will allow them to better spread the money.
