Ask TKP: what are your biggest tips for an all day tailgate?

Just figured it'd be fun to see what everyone thinks. Answers can range from park next to a grassy area for more space, to don't come out of the gate too fast and be sloppy seven hours before the game starts

What are your tips for a successful all day tailgate?

Start early, keep pace with the pack, finish strong

The Dude Abides

Pace thyself. Drink as much water as you do bourbon.

Also underrated - sunscreen

probably better to drink at least twice as much water as bourbon...at least..for me it is

Onward and upward

Start hydrating several days in advance.
Park near grass, preferably near the exit.
Bring a football.
No liquor until 2 hours to kickoff.
Drink water between beers.
Have a way to watch the early games.
Pop up tailgate tents are good for the September games.
Have food.
Make friends with your neighbors in the lot.

How strict are they about the "No throwing, including footballs" in the parking lots?

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

The times I've tailgated at Tech (mostly spring games and last season, thanks Corps), no one has ever had an issue with it. Just be careful about where you throw and don't infringe on other tailgates and you'll be fine.

As with most things, if you don't make an ass of yourself and you're courteous of your neighbors, you won't have any issues.

Personally, I've never seen anyone get in trouble for throwing footballs/frisbees/bean bags/etc.

Don't hit anyone with a football and you are good to go.

Have a way to watch the early games.

Early games? Shit son, when are you starting this tailgate? We're the only game being played on Monday

I didn't think this was exclusive to Labor Day. But for Monday, have a way to watch...baseball?

Or bring Top Gun on DVD...

Or last years game!!!!

Go 1 to 1 bourbons to water (at least until you forget how many bourbons deep you are)

I always go with have 1 bourbon, 1 water, repeat. I do this until I forget which I had last. Then I have 2 bourbons and a capnap (10-15 minutes tops). Take a leak, then scream my head off...hopefully by now I'm in the stadium for this last part).

My advice to you is to start drinking, heavily.

A Bluto reference is always good for a leg!

Just remember, you can't drink all day if you don't start in the morning!

Step 1: Buy Ice Shot Luge.
Step 2: Use Ice Shot Luge.

Viagra or Cialis.

Oh, wait. That would be an all-day something else.

Different kind of tip...

We put the K in Kwality

For a different kind of tailgate.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

well, if you have an RV...

"We were at the pinnacle, and we did it for years," Foster says. He pauses, nods, takes a deep breath. "And I did it with the best guy in the business."

HA! This made my day.

Which leads to another question. Can I set up a tailgate on Sunday night and do a legitimate 24 hour tailgate or will the police frown on that.

Rip his freaking head off!

dunno, but I'd only do this if I wasn't actually planning on going to/enjoying the game. The whole 24 hr thing sounds epic and makes for a good story once you've forgotten how miserable and useless you were at the end of it.

Our gang plans on tailgating all day for Brad Paisley, and then doing it all over again the next day! 2 days of tailgating! SO. MUCH. BOURBON.

GIVE IT TO ME ROSCOE!

We did that once when we were undergrads. I don't recommend it.

1) Hydrate
2) Caffeinate
3) Satiate
4) Intoxicate
5) Cheer loudly and respectfully

6) Dominate

It's a marathon, not a sprint. It's a marathon, not a sprint. It's a marathon, not a sprint.

Sorry, not so much trying to help you as remind myself.

If you play it, they will win.

Don't let Joe talk you into chugging a half solo cup of Maker's on your walk in at a random tailgate in Lot #1.

when you run out of bourbon, start on your other bottle of bourbon

Drink slowly but copiously. And for God's sake, mix in some water breaks. I failed to heed this advice while partying pre-game at Pat O'Brien's prior to the '05 Sugar Bowl, and the results weren't pretty. Just ask my wife. When you wake up in a dark room, face down on a bed, and notice the game you're supposed to be at is on TV, make sure you check the room before you ask out loud "what happened?". Because the verbal assault you might get from your wife will be painful. Well deserved, but painful. So as many have said here, it's a marathon, not a sprint. And even marathoners drink water along the way.

"Badges? We don't need no stinking badges!"

I want to hear the rest of this story.

I'll just say that the immediate response I got was "I'll tell you what happened!!!" And then I got absolutely destroyed over the fact that we'd just spent a considerable amount of money for me to be passed out in our room and NOT at the game. But being the drunk b@st@rd that I was, I argued that we were going to the game. So I went into the bathroom of our brand spankin' new hotel room to take a shower, only to find the white tile completely red from all the hurricanes I tossed up (and I very rarely get sick from drinking). I once again made the mistake of asking what happened. I don't remember much after that...

But we did make it to the game halfway through the 3rd quarter, only to watch us lose the lead and the game to Jason Campbell and the Auburn "War Damn Eagle" Tigers.

Side note - having been to the Auburn Sugar Bowl and the Kick-off Game against Bammer, I'll take the Auburn fans all day and twice on Sunday. Bammer fans are unbearable. Not WVU unbearable, but bad none the less...

"Badges? We don't need no stinking badges!"

The best of Bama fandom comes out on Paul Feinbaum's show, especially after they lose. The calls were epic after the lost the Sugar Bowl to us last year. best part of that win was listening to a Bama fan at the bar go on and on about the "slow, weak" B1G and how they'd trade TD's for Fg's all night long. Oddly enough, they left at half time when we were down by 2 and never returned. Saban's whining about the NFL draft and how it affected Bama's play was priceless. As that fine AU grad, Sir Charles Barkley, put it, "Take your butt whipping and go home."

The reaction by Saban when AU got the kick six to win the Iron Bowl was priceless. Needless to say, "Hey Bama, Got a second?" and "Kick, Bama, Kick" are seen on a lot of AU swag.

Yep, that's the typical Bammer fan droll. They just can't believe that anyone would question their superiority and greatness...

One of my favorite reactions ever:
WTF???

Even though they still beat us easily that year, they still couldn't believe we could score on them like that!

Someone above mentioned a cat nap. Napping is key. Pace your alcohol intake and your energy output. Relax and have a nap at some point. You'll wake up refreshed and ready for the home stretch of drinking and screaming!

Also sunscreen.

You spelled redbull wrong.

I'm a professional napper. I practice napping so I can nap better when it really counts. Outdoor naps are the best!

Looks like everyone has covered the alcohol related tips. My fellow pasty white Hokies should remember sunscreen, and make sure you reapply!
