All right Hokies fans, this is the game to prepare cold adult beverages a plenty for, find a seat in a place that not many people can hear you or the language that might exit your mouths. Could our Hokies challenge the Cyclones? Yes, it is indeed possible, as thus far, Iowa State has not beaten anyone of note. Colorado is their toughest opponent so far and they only won that game by six points. That said, Tech finds itself facing one of the most experienced lineups it will go up against all season. The Cyclones have a very established rotation of six players for the majority of games with a handful of role players filling in for breathers. All five starters so far are averaging in double digits and as a team they are shooting better than 50% from the field.
So where are there weaknesses?
Free throw shooting is a big one, as Iowa State is only shooting 54% from the line so far this season. Now that we have some depth we cant be afraid to take good fouls. Force them to beat us at the line if necessary.
Depth is another. The players behind the starters are not really tested for the most part. Get the starters in foul trouble early and we might be able to press an advantage. The most one of their non-six man rotation is playing right now is 14 minutes per game but after that is six for the next. They have only played 11 total players this season.
One other area that they are similar to Tech in is that they are turning the ball over at a high rate, averaging 13 turnover per game so far. We have to find a way to turn their turnovers into easy baskets or early trips to the charity stripe.
This is a neutral site game down in Destin, Florida as part of the Emerald Coast Classic, so we also get the benefit of it not being a home game for the Cyclones, as their arena holds a formidable crowd that packs the gym just about every night. This could work against us though as it is the first time many of our Hokies will play outside of Cassell.

The Cyclones are led by Senior forward Georges Niangs, (#31), 6'8, 230 Lbs that is excellent at distributing the ball from the lane with 4.3 APG as well as 4.3 RPG and 15.7 PPG across 30 minutes.

He is joined by Senior forward Jameel McKay (#1) 6'9, 215 Lbs down low, averaging a double double thus far with 13.7 PPG and 12.7 RPG. He is shooting an amazing 64.5% from the field so far this season and should contend for BigXII player of the year this seas

The third Senior is leading scorer, Nazareth Mitrou-Long (#15) 6'4, 208 Lbs shooting guard. He has put up 17 PPG so far this season, along with 2 RPG and 1.3 APG. He is also one of three players we must guard on the perimeter, shooting 43% from outside so far.

Next in the rotation is Junior point guard Monte Morris (#11) 6'2, 170 Lbs, who is their primary distributer at 7.3 APG, while also contributing 13.3 PPG and 3 RPG. He may be the slickest point guard we see this season outside of Grayson Allen at Duke.

The last of the starters for this lineup is Senior forward Abdel Nader, 6'6, 230 lbs. He brings 12.3 PPG and 5.3 RPG. All of the starters are playing at least 28 minutes per game so far, in an offensive strategy that has ISU running a High tempo offense with pick and roll combined with combined with a ton of off ball screens looking to get open shooters and easy layups for bigs.
Junior guard, Matt Thomas (#21) 6'4, 195 lbs serves as the sixth man for this team, allowing for guards to alternate on and off the court to keep legs fresh. He is sort of an anomaly, usually playing more like a wing when he gets into games. So far this season he is putting up 6.3 PPG and a surprising 7.3 RPG. After Thomas, they get about 8 of their 86 points per game from the rest of the bench.
This game is going to require the Hokies to play disciplined basketball, focusing on converting turnovers and limiting their own. It will be critical that they shoot at least 70% from the free throw line as it could make the difference in a game like this. I would expect Buzz to play a rotation of only seven or eight players unless the team gets into early foul trouble. There is not the luxury in this game to get guys like Pierce and Hudson in for much playing time if they aren't performing. Size wise we match up well against this team so we shouldn't be dominated like we may have been in years past unless we take bad fouls and key players like Leday and Blackshear head to the bench early.
Do not be surprised if Iowa State decides to run quite a bit of high pressure defense, to include full court press, half-court traps and isolation of our young point guards to try to create turnovers and give themselves a comfortable margin. Buzz will need to be careful where he employs those same tactics as this is an experienced squad that know each other's tendencies when needing help and could quickly dissolve press defense into easy buckets if the team does not rotate back quickly. In the half court, the Cyclones will likely switch into a 2-3 zone defense, high pressure up top and a triangle around the basket with their bigs. I expect them to defend the lane hard, basically daring Tech to beat them from outside.
Could Tech pull this one off? Sure, but will they? I think its unlikely that with our inexperienced personnel that we will pull out a victory here, even at a neutral location. Tech probably falls in this one, 72-66 and will likely face an Illinois team that gets upset by UAB in their first game of this tournament. The Illini have a couple of key injuries that are hampering their season so far so UAB could pull an upset there.

If we keep within 6 points of Iowa State tonight I'd be thrilled. I'd take that in a heartbeat.
Same here. Good athletes on both sides, but too much experience vs. too much inexperience. I'm guessing about 85-71 in a great learning experience for our new Hokies. Give this same match up a year from now and its a different story.
Gonna be DVRing this one and hopefully I can catch a radio station that's playing it. I'm driving to Charlottesville this evening for the UVA game and I'll be on the road during the entire duration of tonight's game. Ideally we will win both, but I'd happy with a football victory against LOLUVA and a close, well-played hoops game tonight.
Seems as though their big men are athletic/strong, but did I read that correctly that their tallest player is only 6'9? We're gonna need strong performances Hamilton and Blackshear in order to pull the upset off.
They do have a 6'10 Junior Center but he has rarely played in their first three games. There are two 6'9 guys on the roster as well. The two that are not starters in this three man group have a total of 12 minutes played in three games, scoring 2 points and 3 rebounds between them.
Excited to watch. Thx for the preview!!!
I'll be there tonight, pulling for the upset.
any way to watch this game over a computer? I don't get cbs sports.

You're gonna want to have adblock on
I've been fighting through ads like crazy on firstrow and vipbox. Streams aren't cooperating at all if I have AdBlocker running. Very frustrating but at least you can hear the stream, I guess?
VipBox Link (careful what ads you click)
Try this.

If Buzz pulls this off, this would be a program-changing win
I want Buzz's shirt.
Poor ball handling by our guards leading to turnovers and easy transition buckets and then a failure to collapse to the basket allowing way to much penetration. Hamilton with some highlights. Devin has to develop a consistent shot or he is a hindrance offensively that isnt overcome by his ball handling.
A combination of their excellent three-point shooting, atrocious defense in the paint, and turnovers are killing us.
We are not challenging them at the three point line. They are getting 1-2 full seconds to take an easy shot.
It was a 4 point game 10 minutes in, but it has quickly turned into a shoot around for ISU. It seems that the pretty solid defense we had going for the first 10 minutes has imploded.
Wide open shooters on defense, sound familiar? It was the exact same thing last year. Wide open shooters. Every game. Only difference is we now have no shooters. Not even a threat to shoot. 30 points at halftime.
Good first half. We just need to play a little bit better in a few areas, particularly offense and defense, and we'll be right back in this.
I think you forgot to end that with /s
Absolutely. Just need to make baskets.
We are getting some better movement 2nd half.
16 pt game. Just keep fighting guys!
These have to be the most obnoxious casters I've ever had to listen to.
Leday came close to getting another double-double. It's too bad no one else is doing much, because he's been a huge surprise
Allen..huge disappointment so far.
Agreed. It seems likes he tries to do too much.
Was coming on here to say the same thing. He just really hasn't looked good at all on either end of the floor. A lot of people probably thought the productivity of him and LeDay would be reversed with Allen being the key cog when they came in.
This was a step up for him. We got three decent ball handlers... hopefully they'll help one another get better during the year. Got a feeling Allen is still knocking off some rust. But perhaps I'm being stupidly optimistic.
Welp. One good thing, rumors of LeDay's fading into obscurity against superior competition may have been exaggerated. This game proves just how far away we are from being a serious tournament contender. I'll still be happy with 5-6 conference wins and a shot at the NIT this year.
If we play defense in ACC play as bad as we did tonight, we'll be lucky to top last years win total.
What was shocking was how badly we reacted to screens on defense. Seemed to shore it up towards the end but it was ugly for a long time.
We need to fix the defense soon otherwise we're going get gutted in ACC play.
While we're at it, we need to learn to make free throws and 3-pointers.
Like playing the good teams early in season. Nothing like getting shown up to motivate a young team.
We're going to get alot better. May be a rough year in the ACC, but there is alot to like. Will it jell with a few guys separating themselves?
Observations from season so far:
1-Justin Robinson will eventually be a great PG
2-Justin Bibbs needs to be more assertive and take leadership of this team
3- LeDay is the real thing. May not be a 20-10 guy but a good player
4- Where is the Seth Allen we thought we were getting?
5- Jalen Hudson, please come out of your shell and be the player we know you can be
6- We will get better and better as season goes along
The more I watch Seth play the more he makes me think he is related to Jeff Allen
A few observations from the live game:
In person, it looked like they couldn't buy a free throw or a 3-pointer. It also looked like the defense altered between being pretty good and non-existent.
If they had made their 3-pointers and their free throws, this would have been a close game.
Iowa State fans represented. They had a good number of fans there, mostly retired folks who likely winter in Destin. There were a lot fewer VT fans. I'd say less than 100. That said, it was good to see some VT fans there. I really hope VT basketball achieves some level of success, and starts to build a real basketball fan base. I have to admit, I took some family members, and didn't really have a lot of gear for them to wear, since most of mine is football jerseys...
You hate to just say Terrible but that about sums this game up. We couldn't defend the perimeter, allowing ISU to shoot 13-21 from behind the arc. We couldn't shoot from there either, going 3-15. We couldn't hit our free throws, with a season low 48% going 12-25. We couldn't capitalize when we dominated the offensive glass with 15 rebounds. The worst stat though is that we let them pass with no challenge. They had 20 assists in the game, average game would be about 10. We allowed wide open shots all game and it killed us.
OK, that's bad, but I wouldn't say "terrible".
I'd say "there is lots of room for improvement".
sorry, wrong thread.
