Virginia State University named Justin Harper as interim football coach on Wednesday, replacing Byron Thweatt, who resigned to accept a position as linebackers coach at James Madison University.
Does this count for Beamer's tree? Glad to see this.

SPELL CHECK YO
Love Justin Harper, glad to see him doing well as a coach.
Hokies and Ravens...But I hope they give him a full-time head coach gig, not juster the interim tag.
A head coach before Bud. Who would have guessed?
to be fair, head coach at VSU is a lower-tier job than a position coach at an FCS program.
Absolutely. I just got a chuckle when the thought ran through my mind of a guy who played a game for VT in the 2008 calendar year now being a head coach.
Am I a bad Hokie for not knowing who Justin Harper is?
Also, didn't know there was a Virginia State University.
Part of the Eddie Royal, Josh Morgan, David Clowney crew at receiver. Tall, lanky deep threat. Caught a few weirdly identical post routes for touchdowns in 2007. Caught a cool one-hander in the corner of the EZ falling down from Glennon.
Gotcha. 2007 is probably the issue.. 2008 was my freshman year. I remember Royal, Clowney, and Glennon, but haven't heard of Morgan or Harper.
Royal, Harper, Hyman, and Morgan all graduated after the 2007 season. Clowney graduated after 2006. So that would make sense with your freshman year being 2008.
Dude could also hoop it up. I reffed a game that he and Kam and Tyrod were in and Harper threw down an alley-oop from Kam one handed from about the top of the backboard. My whistle would have been on the ground if it wasn't on a string around my neck. Also thought I was going to have to call an ambulance in a different game when I saw a kid preparing to take a charge from Duane Brown 1 on 1 on a outlet pass. Kid moved out of the way when his life flashed before his eyes.
THIS IS THE REASON I COME TO TKP.
Thank you, Homebrew, thank you more than anything
You are more than welcome. I swear half the football team was on intramural basketball teams. I had to call a travel on backup center Rashad Ferbee when he was trailing a breakaway and got a pass dropped off for him but needed about six baby steps to slow down enough to shoot it. He was pretty mad about it, but his teammates were laughing him out of the gym. My proudest moment was giving Chris Tucker a technical for slamming the ball after I whistled him for a foul. I was secretly hoping he would have kept mouthing off so I could have given him an MLB ump style ejection. Josh Morgan was also damn good on the hardwood. I stayed after my games were over to watch a couple of his games.
If I recall, Harper had a breakout game in 2004 against GT that lead to a crazy, come from behind win at GT on a Thursday night. My wife went to bed midway through the 3rd qr and I woke her up sometime at 11 when we scored our last TD.

Looks like damn near every WR got in on the action in the last half of that game.
Adonis Alexander looks like the second coming of Minor
I was at that game. It was an awesome comeback. I remember Randall throwing a crazy two point conversion. We were going nuts!
Freshman year 2004 was a fun season, we had zero expectations, almost beat #1 USC, beat top ten WVU, stormed the field, got in a fight with an old dude and a cane in a WVU sweater, made it to the sugar bowl, acc title, and every game was great, comebacks, close games, offense pulling out tricks. That season started a hell of a run.
That was my senior year, crazy crazy times. Went too every game, Sugar Bowl included. Man... I.miss that shit
Offensive pass interference...ugh
This seems rather odd to me, considering he's only about 2 years removed from the Ravens practice squad, meaning he has minimal coaching experience. However, he got a chance to see how some great coaches (Beamer, Harbaugh) operated, and how some great organizations (VT, Ravens) are run, so maybe they'll think some of those experiences for Justin will translate to success.
How many staff members left to go to JMU? How many were left to become interim head coach?
Yeah, his only job may be to watch the fax machine for two weeks while they seek a replacement. Let's get excited when he's running spring practice.
Edit: interim head coach is still head coach and comes with the responsibility, I know; I'm just saying let's see if it sticks.
Honestly. I heard him talk. It was some radio show. I can't remember what it was. But I was blown away. He was talking about how great Beamer was and what he would tell kids in the locker room before the UNC game and I think he said two sentences and I, driving in my car would have stormed Normandy. I don't remember exactly what it was but the whole segment I came out thinking he's going to be a really solid coach and a guy kids would love playing for.
